English Version

Estáis On Fire.

Jensen: ¡Muchas gracias!

¡Buenos tiempos! jaja.

¿Tenéis planes de gira europea? ¿Vendréis a España?

English Version

Hello, I wanted to congratulate you on 'I Am Legion', a great album that you have published, sounds great. Less than a year has passed since your previous LP 'In His Infernal Majesty’s Service'. You are on fire.

Jensen: Thank you very much! Yes, it certainly feels like we are having a great creative period within the band. Most bands enjoy their biggest creative and productive period when they first start out, just like we did ourselves, but not many bands can claim a second such creative and productive period within their career. We will try to keep Witchery from having a third such period since we are focused and letting this second period end haha.

You have left the bar high. Do not you feel a little pressed for this new album?

No, you know, we have collectively within the band released many albums by now, so we don’t worry too much about a good/great album being just done to being lucky. Its happened a few times that we have put out great albums so we know we are able to pull it off again. On a personal level I have sometimes feared that “the riffs have stopped coming, Im finished” etc, but this just goes to show that there are always more riffs to write. It never ends. Just make sure you are passionate about what you are doing (regardless of what that is) and the end result will be great.

How has the process of conception of the album gone?

Just like with all other Witchery albums: I write everything but we always rehearse everything and decide together what is good and what is not so good. If something isnt liked within the band I will write something new for that part. So, that’s how it goes. I write and they others give feedback and help me filter my ideas.

Which track was harder to complete and why?

WitcheryIamLegionI don’t know if there was such a track on this album. We usually tend to start out with me having 5-6 ideas for songs when we begin rehearsing for an album, so there is a lot of writing that happens simultaneously. If we hit an obstacle in one song we usually skip over and start with the next one. That obstacle will stay in the back of our minds tho, and when its time to focus on it again there are always solutions that have grown unconsciously. This way we never lose momentum and obstacles don’t feel like such a road block to us.

And the recording? To what extent was it different from previous records?

It is the second album we have done with Danne Bergstrand so the studio itself and the people working there were familiar to us. We always record live and this was of course also the case with I Am Legion.

Once again have gone back to work with Daniel Bergstrand.

Danne is great at getting the best out of the bands that he records. He is also the same age as me so he and I share the same references when talking about sounds and productions. He is also great at understanding what the band is looking for, but still making it sound fresh and new. For example, a band usually references their vision of the production to another band’s sound or album. Danne is great in this perspective as he manages to achieve the band’s wishes but without copying the production the “original” production. He creates something new for the band.

I find the sound so organic you have achieved. Did you have it clear from the beginning or was Daniel proposed?

It was a request from me that we would sound like a real band. I mentioned that I loved the drum sound on Van Halen’s 1984 album and Danne really delivered on this part. Yet, as I mentioned in my previous answer, he managed to make something new with it. He molded the whole production around how he thought Witchery’s drums should sound like (according to my requests) and came up with a unique “Bergstrand + Witchery” sound.

How would you define this new album?

I think we took a few steps towards a dirtier sound production-wise on IHIMS and I think we have continued on that path with IAL. I think it is a reaction to most modern metal productions being so squeaky clean, tight and non-dangerous sounding. I want metal to sound intimidating and passionate. Not as if the band spent most of their time in the studio trying to be as lifelessly tight as possible. If its meant to be as tight as possible, then tightness can be measured. If something can be measured then it is an athletic achievement, not an artistic one. I don’t think any of the great painters throughout history made great art by staying “within the lines” with their brushes (a thing you could measure). They made great art by breaking over the lines.

It is a very varied album. I love songs like: “True North”, “Amun Ra” & “Faustian  Deal”. What can you tell us about them?

I had a great feeling True North already when I wrote it. It is a very simple song, maybe just three riffs in all! But I could just tell that this was going to be something that would sound great live. I started writing A Faustian Deal with Bathory (Under the Sign-era) in mind, but it turned into something a lot more Mercyful Fate as the creative process went on. That is also why Hank Shermann was asked to play the solo on that song. Amun-Ra is bit more punkish than your average Witchery song, but I think that goes to show that we still open to new influences and that the band is still evolving musically.

20 years of career is said soon. What do you keep from those early years and that was lost along the way?

I think we have kept our passion for Witchery music intact. Without it it wouldn’t be the same anymore and we would probably call it a day (i.e. quit the band). Something we’ve lost, but that we are hardly alone with losing after 20 years as a band, is the easy access of the band members. When you are 18-20 years old and start out as a band, people seldom have families etc and you have easy access to everyone. You can rehearse for hours just for fun. As time goes by, people start families as everyone else, and time available for the band diminishes. This is a totally natural development (if you arent on a fulltime musician level and no one has to go to day jobs, of course) but it was a great time being in the band back then. Rehearsals going on until 02 or 03am.. beers, playing Witchery songs or covers.. Good times! haha.

Have you already planned a European tour? Will you come to Spain?

We are very open to touring Europe and of course also Spain. We did a tour very long ago with Moonspell and Kreator through Spain. The two Spanish shows (in Barcelona and Madrid) were absolutely great, and we would love to come back!

Any message passing our readers and fans of Witchery in Spain?

If you are a longtime fan, then thank you so much for sticking with us throughout the years. If you are a new fan, then thank you so much for your newfound support! As I mentioned earlier, we would love to play Spain again. If anyone has connections with any Spanish festivals and/or tours then please get in touch with them and tell them to contact us! The more gigs we get in Spain the better for everyone, right!! Cheers and hope to see you all soon in Spain!
