When BURNING WITCHES takes the stage, the world trembles beneath their firestorm of heavy metal power. On their sixth studio album, Inquisition, out August 22 via the prestigious Napalm Records label, the Swiss powerhouse returns with a darker, more thunderous brew, diving headfirst into themes of medieval persecution, religious oppression, and the unbreakable spirit of resistance. "Inquisition" delivers tight production and a relentless onslaught of blazing riffs, crushing drums, and vocal sorcery, driven by producers Damir Eskic (Destruction) and V.O. Pulver (Little Creek Studio, Pro-Pain, Destruction), shaped by the songwriting of founding guitarist Romana Kalkuhl. With pounding drums, Latin chants, and eerie guitar melodies, the opening "Sanguini Hominum" sets a harrowing mood for medieval madness. Made in Metal had an excellent opportunity to chat with the band to learn all about this new release.
MiM: Looking back, what were those early days like when you were just getting started in the complicated world of music? What memories do you have of those times?
RK: Nice to talk to you! When we start, we and I just want to play some shows and record albums. We didn't have any idea that everything would go so long and we would travel the whole world and people everywhere would sing our songs. This is just remarkable!! The beginning was also nice but hard because of dealing with members that play with us in this time. I was always struggling with ideas and trying to represent what I represent as well now!! But later everything changes positively. I'm thankful for where we are now, and I don't just take it easy. But anyway, the beginning was anyway pleasant and full of emotions.
MiM: "Inquisition" (Napalm Records, 2025) is an album with epic guitar sounds and vocals that envelop you and draw you into a story of persecution and a witch hunt in medieval times. What can you tell me about this album? In which studio was it recorded?
RK: We always record at the same place, Little Creek Studio in Switzerland. It's wonderful to work there.
MiM: What was it like working with producer Damir Eskic and V.O. Pulver?
RK: We have also worked since the first DEMO with these guys. It's like a family, and we love to work with them. It's just outstanding. We talk, we discuss, we fight; it's like a real family, and the result you can always hear…
MiM: Laura Guldemond's voice comes from the depths of her soul. It transports us. What was the process of recording her voice like?
RK: We work on Laura every time and build up her voice for this specific witches sound.
MiM: Musically speaking, what would you say are the differences and similarities between "The Dark Tower" and “Inquisition”?
RK: Hmm… Maybe it's too early for me to compare. Both albums have a deep dark theme that we love to write about. I think I will keep this direction, because it is also fun, and we learn about the past…
MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between the songs. Is "Inquisition" a concept album? Does the inspiration for the lyrical composition of the band's songs come from the band's collective imagination, or do you also draw on specific literature?
RK: Most ideas come from me and Damir, who is working every day for Burning Witches. We collect ideas and themes for the future and and and. We still have ideas for the plans. But I also talk to girls, and we check together if a theme really fits and whether we want to do it or not. "Inquisition" is not a conceptual album, but there is a line between most of the songs.
MiM: On a musical level, when it comes to creating the music, what are your references?
RK: I just play and try to compose cool and good riffs, and I also watch that it fits with Burning Witches.
MiM: What is the creative process of composing music like? Is it a collective process, or are there only one or maybe two members of the band who compose?
RK: The biggest part I do is to feel the riffs. I always go with Lala to the rehearsal room and practice with her a little and see if the riff is working. This time also Courtney was involved, and I'm proud of her and all her work!!

MiM: You are a band that has been around for several years, with albums and many concerts under your belt. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work over these years?
RK: I just enjoy every moment, and we love our band! It's like a dream. And we still record and also sell! I mean, so many people buy our albums; this is just amazing. We love all our albums; they are just remarkable.
MiM: You are a band that has been around for several years, with albums and many concerts under your belt. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work over these years?
RK: I think we have our style, and we love it!! And yes, I will keep this style. A little left or right, but in general we are what we are.
MiM: Once the album is available to all the band's fans, what plans do you have for promoting it? Any tours or concerts in the coming months?
RK: In 2026 we will tour the whole world again, and I'm just excited and happy about everything that comes.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
RK: Thank you all so much, and just buy our records and listen to them LOUD. See you on the road.
