“Born In Darkness” will be released on October 24th via Art Gates Records. This new album marks a decisive step in Naraka's career, fusing their signature aggression with melodic nuances and a melancholic sensibility that adds depth and contrast to their sound. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to chat with Jean-Philippe Porteux, the guitar player of the band.
MiM: How would you describe the transition from the groove metal of your previous works to the more melodic and melancholic thrust of “Born In Darkness”?
N: Hello Raul, nice to meet you too; it’s a pleasure to talk to you too! The previous release, “In Tenebris,” already had this melodic side but only with orchestrations and keyboard. On this new album, melody comes too from the guitar, but many by the vocals. We would like to present something new to not always do the same album, and the melancholic side is something that will be more present in the following albums as a duality between fast songs and melodic ones.
MiM: What were the main sources of lyrical and instrumental inspiration during the writing of “Born in Darkness”?![]()
N: The source was our crazy world, and we would like to tell you we have the feeling of being born in darkness in the world we live in every day. The title is not only a good metal album name, but the feeling with how the world's evolution is, to always go to the worst, is that we are all in this planet born in darkness.
MiM: What was the experience like working with Logan Mader as a producer, and what did he contribute to the sound?
N: Logan did a remarkable job on the two albums we worked with him on! He worked with many great bands, so working with him is so good! He knows how to make a massive sound on a metal album. Not only that, but he also worked with bands we love, such as Gojira, Dagoba, Devildriver, and Soulfly, so working with him is a great memory.
MiM: What was the most difficult challenge recording in three different studios (Hybreed, Serial Drumer, and At The Gates Ov Hell)?
N: Hybreed Studio is a studio of a friend where we go for the moment for recording vocals, bass, and guitar. Serial Drummer is the studio of the drummer of At the Gates ov Hell. is the studio of the band. From now on, we will do only orchestrations and keyboard, but now, in the next release, we will do all in the same place.
MiM: How did the equipment and facilities at Darth Vader Studio influence the final mix and mastering?
N: We weren’t in Darth Vader's studio in the USA; we worked with Logan by internet. He sent us a mix, and after we told him what needed to change or not, Logan had all the material necessary to do a killer sound.
MiM: Several tracks feature symphonic textures reminiscent of SepticFlesh, along with occasional electro-touches. How did you find the balance to make the two fit together? Without diluting the power of metal?
N: We are great fans of symphonic metal bands like Septicflesh or Cradle of Filth. So it’s in our influences; the risk is to put too much of that, so in our case we choose to not necessarily put orchestrations on all tracks but only on the ones that need it to give more melodic feeling.
MiM: What is the meaning of the title “Born In Darkness,” and how does it connect with the album's narrative?
N: The meaning is as I said, the feeling of being born in darkness as a human living on earth when we see on TV all that appears every day and how the world goes to his loss.
MiM: Are there any recurring themes—loss, rebirth, or internal struggle—that run through several songs?
N: Yes, of course, rebirth, or struggle, goes on. As a band, there is sometimes changes, and a band becomes better with those changes, but it's a struggle to live through all that, so yes, these themes of life and death come often.
MiM: What is the story behind the cover art, and how does it reflect the album's melancholic tone?
N: The cover was done by Andreas Bathory, a painting artist, and he did an impressive job. See that as the representation of hell on earth.
MiM: After supporting Cradle of Filth, Alcest, Nile, and Krisiun, how do you perceive the reception of your new sound on European tours?
N: These tours were wonderful; we played all over Europe, and the feedback from the audience was great. We have their support, and it means so much to us. It means that all the work we've done and continue to do begins to work, and it’s a pleasure to have the support of fans and headliners like Cradle of Filth; it means a lot to us.
MiM: What musical direction do you envision for the next album after this evolutionary step?
N: We begin to work on the third album right now that will be recorded in 2026. The songs we have written for the moment have some more clean vocals and a more melancholic side, but we will keep the power of our sound. The goal will be to find the perfect mix of all of that.
MiM: Jean-Philippe, as founder and lead guitarist, what motivated you to start Naraka in 2019, and how do you see your personal evolution in this album?
N: The music is my passion and my work. In more of Naraka, I give guitar lessons. I am a guitar tech too, so the motivation is the passion, and I started Naraka with the idea to pass steps and to make an evolution of the band. We work hard for that, and at each album we get more, so I will always give the best of me for that.
MiM: The title "Born in Darkness" contains a paradox: being born in darkness. How do you conceive of that intimate space before finding your light?
N: It’s the feeling of being born in a bad place. Of course, there is so many good moments. I think I find my light with my family and friends, people that have my trust; it's my light is this dark.
MiM: What moments in your life do you feel were marked by darkness, and how did they transform into creative strength?
N: I think by the loss of people I love, it’s made me in a situation of hopelessness and in drama, but give strength for after to not see all the things as the others see it.
MiM: What will your promotional strategy be once "Born In Darkness" is released, both on digital platforms and traditional media, and live, to maximize its reach and connect with new and old fans?
N: This album will be out on the label Art Gates Records, and I trust in us to do the best job possible. The first music video came out in July, and the title track and the new music video will be out September 11th for the song “Blazing Sun.” There will be, too, in October, a lyric video for the song “The Reign in Red,” where we got the Septicflesh singer as a guest. The label works on both to make the best release.
MiM: If you had the opportunity to leave a few words for your fans through the media on the day of the release, what message would you like to convey, and how would you like them to experience this new chapter with you?
N: Thanks for supporting us. Thank you so much! Support us by buying our new album, merch, and shows. Supporting your bands is the best way to keep them alive and continue to be alive! And thank you, Raul, for this interview!
