MiM: Su identidad incluye compases irregulares (3/4, 4/4, 7/8, 11/8).
¡Sigan fieles, sigan metal!

IV, the long-awaited fourth album by Bulgarian symphonic metal band The AXE Project, will be released on October 31, 2025, by Art Gates Records. With a more guitar-driven sound and a wall of sound in the rhythms combined with rich synthscapes and multi-layered vocals, IV promises to take the listener on a journey that ranges from electro-gothic riffs to rock ballads and progressive metal passages. In this interview, we'll explore the creative process, production, and expectations surrounding this release. Rosen Gerogiev and Georgi Georgiev answered our questions.
Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona, and it's a privilege to speak with you.
MiM: Why did you decide to call this fourth album simply "IV," and what message did you want to convey with that name?
Georgi:As you correctly guessed, there is really a message in the title of the album: if you rotate the cover 180 degrees, the Roman “IV” turns into something else! It was a golden opportunity, and I didn’t want to miss it! The back of the sleeve is designed also to give you a hint that it can be rotated—half of the songs in the tracklist are printed upside-down! What is the message? We will leave this for fans to discover; it’s not that deep but a very modern topic!
Mim: The release coincides with October 31, Halloween. Is there any conceptual or thematic connection between the date and the album's content?
Rosen: Well, the release planning is done by the label, so I guess it’s just a coincidence. The general album theme is sci-fi, but there is one certain track that is specifically horror-inspired, so there’s a small Halloween celebration of sorts! The song is an easy-to-find tribute to one of the best authors in the genre, so I will leave it to the fans to dig it up!
MiM: "IV" is more guitar-driven and features a "wall of sound" in the rhythms. How did this desire to put the guitars front and center come about after previous, more orchestral works?
Rosen: When we started the work on the new songs, we were sure that this album should be different from the others. We wanted to somehow “upgrade” the sound and to improve the production values. It was a challenge to compose guitar riffs suitable for the desired “wall of sound” effect. Partially it was achieved by using 7-string guitars in the recordings, but also the very present drums and bass guitars helped a lot. Layering the keyboards and making the instruments sound as a whole took a lot of effort in the mixing stage, but I think it was worth it!
MiM: Your identity includes irregular time signatures (3/4, 4/4, 7/8, 11/8). How does this rhythmic complexity influence the creative process and the interaction between instruments?
Rosen: Through the years we experimented very often with odd signatures because there’s always a fascination and a strange beauty in that. Creating such music is the heart of so-called progressive metal, and having so many talented band members helped a lot to achieve the goal. IV is a more straightforward album compared to previous ones, but there’s one particular 8-minute composition that shows off what we learned playing this style!
MiM: Is there a piece on "IV" in which you experimented for the first time with a metric pattern or an unusual structure?
Rosen: There are two songs and one instrumental in the album that can qualify for this category—not only unusual structure but also experimenting with a lot of piano parts thanks to our new-old keyboard player Valentin Petrov. The result is interesting and demands more than one listening to figure out what’s going on. There are layers upon layers in background parts to discover! And yes, we have some 4/4 songs too for more relaxed listeners!
MiM: The fusion of male and female vocals, with operatic-style dialogue, is your signature. How does this vocal dynamic contribute to the storytelling and atmosphere of each song?
Georgi: That’s relatively easy! Our songs always tell some story, sometimes fiction, sometimes real. When I write lyrics, I always assign “roles” to the different vocals, as in opera, for example. Then we decide how to perform the parts and record them. Most of the magic happens in the studio, where we sometimes change or fine-tune some vocal lines. In this album we also have 3 guest vocalists, and some parts are especially created with a certain person in mind. I think the result is quite convincing!
MiM: What was it like working at President Studio in Sofia with Biser Veselinov during the recording of guitars, keyboards, and vocals?
Rosen: We love working there! Nowadays you can record everything at home, but occasionally you need advice or technical guidance, and Biser is a well-experienced guy. He is also very patient and ready to satisfy our endless pretensions and organize the mess we always create with hundreds of takes and tracks. The atmosphere in the studio always inspires our creativity, and we always improve our arrangements significantly. We wish to thank Biser for all he did and definitely will work with him again in the future!
MiM: Georgi Georgiev served as producer. What advantages and challenges does it bring to having a founding member take on the production of the album?
Georgi: Well, the producer is the person who pays for everything, right?! Joke aside, when we start a new album, there’s always a need for someone to oversee the whole process, to decide on the song, instruments, and overall sound. All the band members contribute to their instrumental part arrangements and performance, but all of this should be compiled and polished into a final product. There’s always a lot of technical and logistical work we try to share, but the biggest part falls on the producer, and who’s better than the band member who knows what the band wants to achieve?
MiM: What did Vladimir Bochev contribute to the mix at Zero Project Studio, and how did Raúl Abellán influence the final touches of the master at The Mixtery?
Rosen:Valdemar knows our music deeply and is also very aware of our tastes and preferences about mixing and editing. This is the 3rd record we are doing with him behind the console. We are counting on his expertise and decisions about the final mix, which surpassed our expectations by far! Raúl did an extraordinary work with the mastering, giving the tracks the true shine they needed! It’s always a pleasure to work with such professional and talented people!
MiM: To what extent do your Bulgarian roots and medieval-inspired harmonies influence your current compositional approach?
Rosen: Bulgarian folklore and ethnomusic are rich in both rhythmic and sonic aspects and were always part of our lives. "IV" was a transitional experience for me based on changing my beliefs and thus moving us away from medieval themes to more existential philosophy. We crafted a more “space-like” and universal experience with some post-apocalyptic vibes here and there.
MiM: Beyond "IV," what creative or stylistic horizons would you like to explore in the coming years?
Rosen: We asked ourselves the same questions after our previous album, "Future Imperfect" (2020). Right now we are fully focused on promoting IV as well as we can, and thereafter, it’s easy—just take a look at the crazy world we live in, and the inspiration will come! Style-wise, we wish to continue exploring the progressive universe and maybe increase the role of synths and other electronic sounds in our songs!
MiM: What promotional strategies do you have in place to ensure that "IV" reaches the widest possible audience after its release on October 31st?
Georgi: The whole promotion campaign is handled by our label, Art Gates Records, and we trust their professionalism as with previous campaigns. The album will be distributed on all streaming services as well as on physical digipak CDs by the label’s online store. We also plan to handle a small local tour as well as a promo concert on November 15th here in Sofia, Bulgaria.
MiM: Please say a few words to your fans, who have been with you from the beginning and eagerly await this new album.
Georgi & Rosen: Friends, we walked a long road together! Thank you for your support through all these years! This album is for you, and we had a wonderful time during its creation. We hope you will like the songs, and we will be more than happy to see you at our future events! Comment and share; that always helps! Stay true, stay metal!
