"Todavía hay tantas cosas musicales por descubrir, tantos límites técnicos que superar. Y todavía tengo tantas ideas..."
Ralf Hubert, bajista y mente pensante detrás de Mekong Delta es entrevistado por Tony González para hablar de su nuevo disco, 'Tales of a Future Past'.
MiM - Cada vez que tomo un álbum de Mekong Delta en mis manos no puedo dejar de pensar en cómo nació esta extraordinaria banda, ¿pensaste cuando estabas grabando tu primer CD que más de 30 años después la banda seguirá viva y saludable?
Ralf Hubert - No, por supuesto que no, especialmente porque la historia de Mekong Delta realmente comenzó después que Jorg Michael me tocó la demo de "Fight Fire With Fire" y solo dije de mal humor "Yo puedo hacerlo mejor", y respondió "¡Bueno, entonces hazlo!" Las estructuras básicas de la canción que toqué para él 2 semanas después lo impresionaron tanto que pidió más material y compuse el primer álbum. Nunca pensé que esto se convertiría en un tema tan importante en las revistas. Pero una cosa me quedó clara después del primer álbum: si esto continuara, cada nuevo álbum debería ir un paso más allá... y así estamos en este punto, aquí haciendo una entrevista para el nuevo álbum, que sigue a este sencillo regla.
MiM: Los fans deben saber que esta no es una banda de seguir a diario, incluso cada dos años, pero esta vez tomó cuatro años lanzar un nuevo CD. ¿Por qué?
Ralf Hubert - Sí, claro, fue bastante tiempo, aproximadamente cuatro años en total. La cuestión es que todos los títulos de Mekong los escribí completamente antes de enviarlos a los otros miembros. La idea de un álbum surge principalmente cuando tengo varios riffs con poca anticipación, que encajan tonalmente. Eso no significa que los elementos sean necesariamente una canción, solo que corresponden. Si después de 2 a 4 semanas todavía me gusta, empiezo a expandir los temas existentes. La creación de estas composiciones base es el primer paso, que suma aproximadamente un año. Si el andamiaje que surge en el proceso todavía es lo suficientemente bueno para mí, empiezo a resolver la estructura de la canción final. Eso también lleva tiempo, generalmente un año. Solo cuando eso se hace, los músicos obtienen los títulos y comienza el último paso: afinar y prepararse para la grabación. Este último paso tomó alrededor de 2 años, porque los arreglos orquestales son bastante complejos esta vez.
MiM - En la reseña que escribimos sobre "Tales of a Future Past", el escritor dijo que mientras Ralf Hubert esté vivo, existe la posibilidad de escuchar un nuevo disco. Pero realmente, ¿consideras tocar y grabar música hasta el último día de tu vida?
Ralf Hubert - ¿Por qué no? Todavía hay tantas cosas musicales por descubrir, tantos límites técnicos que superar. Y todavía tengo tantas ideas ...
MiM - La promoción dice que con este CD la banda creó una construcción compleja que recuerda a las óperas clásicas. ¿Cómo puede un fan común entender esta idea?
Ralf Hubert - Para decirlo de una manera amigable, un promotor no necesariamente debe tener conocimiento en música y un músico (especialmente yo) seguramente no lee todo lo que un promotor parece ver en una composición. Dos mundos opuestos chocan .....
MiM - ¿Podríamos considerar las canciones "Landscape" 1,2,3 y 4 "como una canción dividida en partes, en" movimientos "como en una ópera clásica o son canciones diferentes con solo una ligera conexión entre ellas?
Ralf Hubert - No, los "Landscape (s)" dividen el álbum en tres segmentos, que incluyen composiciones con un caracter o estilo similar. Entonces, si lo deseas, puedes llamarlos Intermezzi o Madrigales como se los llamó anteriormente, como los interludios en una ópera. Pero los títulos tienen (puede ver "When all Hope is Gone" como parte de ellos) un fondo más profundo. He estado trabajando durante años para transcribir la novela de Joseph Konrad "Heart of Darkness" y convertirla en una pieza musical. Este intento regularmente me lleva al borde de la locura. Todos los títulos de "Landscape" son en realidad estudios preliminares de una posible implementación musical del tema de la novela. Entonces, los títulos son importantes para mí, porque en mi opinión, esta es la única forma correcta de crear una buena versión musical de la novela de Konrad.
MiM - Es una idea loca mía o podemos encontrar algunas influencias de la guitarra española en "Landscape 4 - Pleasant Ground". ¿Algún tipo de estilo flamenco?
Ralf Hubert - Tienes razón, "Paisaje 4" es originalmente una composición de Isaac Albeniz - "Sevilla" de su "Suite Española". Con la idea,adaptar esta canción para el grupo ha sido como estar embarazado por una eternidad, especialmente porque "Sevilla" pertenece a mis favoritos de todos los tiempos en la guitarra clásica y la he tocado desde mi juventud. Si no recuerdo mal, ya había un arreglo listo para el grupo en el momento en que grabamos el álbum "Wanderer ...", pero eso no encajaba debido a los interludios. Porque en "Tales ..." los títulos instrumentales dividieron el álbum, así que me gustó el título como conclusión, en la antigua tradición del Mekong de adaptaciones clásicas, muy bien.
MiM - "A Colony of Liar Men" es una de las piezas que el sello discográfico ha lanzado como single. ¿Tú también estás a cargo de la letra, Ralf? En ese caso, ¿cuál es el significado detrás de "esta colonia"?
Ralf Hubert - En primer lugar, lo que sigue ahora solo refleja mi opinión, en cuestiones políticas, no puedo hablar por todo el grupo, cada uno de nosotros tiene su propia opinión.
Sí, estoy a cargo de la letra de esta canción y trata sobre el intento permanente de la llamada política para enseñar a la gente cómo pensar y cómo comportarse. Estoy tan harto de escuchar y ver a estos idiotas que nunca trabajaron realmente en su vida pero piensan que lo saben todo y mejor.
En la lucha por la prerrogativa de la interpretación política, la gente se enfrenta ahora a un aluvión de todos los diferentes grupos de interés, y sus mentiras pesan tanto que las vigas se doblan ("... Eurasia nunca estuvo en guerra con Oceanía ...", si sabes a lo que me refiero ;)). Sobre todo, los medios de comunicación, los megáfonos de los justos, que han olvidado por mucho tiempo que su trabajo es informar los hechos de manera neutral y no hacer que las opiniones sean comunes y luego venderlas como artículos (a menos que se hayan marcado de esa manera). Y no se deja de intentar influenciar a las masas. Todo lo que aparece en la narración al final de "Colony of Liar Men" - "Framing", "Overtone Window", etc.
Estoy bastante seguro de que las personas tienen el cerebro suficiente como para formar su propia opinión si solo los hechos son reportados. Para empeorar las cosas, nuestra sociedad se rompe en partes cada vez más pequeñas y nadie escucha al otro. Las discusiones controvertidas tal como las conozco dentro de nuestro grupo, donde se intercambian argumentos y dónde cambiar una posición si los hechos presentados son lógicos y más coherentes que los suyos, ya no parecen posibles allí.
MiM - Otra canción interesante es "Mindeater" y podemos reconocer que estas canciones son parte de una idea única. ¿Es eso correcto?
Ralf Hubert: ¡Tienes razón! desde el punto de vista lírico, ambas canciones tratan con la manipulación, pero hay una gran diferencia en el lado de la composición. "Mindeater" y también "The Hollow Men" están más elaborados para un grupo de metal y los instrumentos no se usan de la forma en que se hizo en "Colony of Liar Men". La guitarra y el bajo se usan más en un estilo clásico de grupo de metal / thrash.
MiM - Me sorprendió escuchar el trabajo de Alex Landenburgn en la batería. Cuando escribes las canciones, ¿también escribes las partes de la batería? Creo que el talento de Alex se explota aquí como nunca antes.
Ralf Hubert - No, para todas las composiciones solo defino los riffs y el orden. Y esos no están en discusión. Para la batería, solo especifico el compás y compongo una estructura básica para que Alex sepa cómo imagino que es. La elaboración y la disposición final de la batería provienen de Alex. Nunca interferiría con los solos de Peters, siempre me impresionan, y Martin siempre me envía tantas ideas vocales que ni siquiera sé qué tomar, porque todas son fantásticas.
MiM: Tal vez sea porque es difícil ver a Mekong Delta de gira por España, pero creemos que la banda no hace giras largas. ¿Es eso correcto? ¿Tenías planes para una gira este año que se rompieron debido al virus?
Ralf Hubert - Básicamente, siempre nos gustan los shows en vivo. El problema es más bien coordinar a todos los países desde los cuales tenemos solicitudes para un recorrido. Los espectáculos individuales son, excepto los grandes festivales, para nosotros siempre un problema logístico extremo, todos los músicos tienen que tener tiempo.
Con respecto a los festivales, generalmente lo sabes un año antes, pero en un solo espectáculo que tendrá lugar cuatro meses después, esto es imposible de coordinar. Lo "gracioso" es que esta vez varios espectáculos en Europa por primera vez se habían coordinado de esa manera, todos tendrían lugar dentro de un mes como lo solicité y no se extenderían durante medio año. Bueno, este pequeño fragmento de ADN ahora ha cambiado nuestros planes en vivo. Veremos si podemos organizar esto una vez más para 2021. Por el momento, realmente no lo sé.
MiM: ¿Hay algo que le gustaría decir a sus fanáticos españoles?
Ralf Hubert - Sí, como parte de Mekong Delta me gustaría agradecer a todos los fanáticos que apoyan a nosotros a lo largo de los años. Gracias, sin ti este grupo no sería nada.

There are still so many musical things to discover, so many technical boundaries to exceed. And I still have so many ideas ….
MiM - Every time I take a Mekong Delta album in my hands I can't stop thinking about how this extraordinary band was born, ¿did you think when you were recording your first CD that more than 30 years later the band will be still alive and healthy?
Ralf Hubert - No of course not, especially as the Mekong story actually started after Jorg Michael played the demo of "Fight Fire With Fire" to me and I only said out of a mood "One can do that better" where he answered, "Well then, do it!" The basic song structures I played to him 2 weeks later impressed him so deeply that he asked for more material and I composed the 1st album. Never thought that this would become such a topic in magazines. But one thing was clear to me after the 1st album: If this would be continued, every new album must go a step further ... and so we are at this point here, doing an interview for the new album what still follows this simple rule.
MiM - The fans must know that this is not a band to follow on a daily basis, even every two years but this time it took four years to release a new CD. Why?
Ralf Hubert - Yes, right, it was quite a long time, about four years in total. The thing is, that all Mekong titles are written by me completely before I send them to the other members. An Album idea mostly arises when I have several riffs at short notice, which fit together tonally. That doesn't mean that the elements are necessarily a song, only that they correspond. If after 2 – 4 weeks I still like this, I start to expand the existing topics. Creating these base compositions is the first step, which adds up to about a year. If the scaffolding that arises in the process still is good enough in my eyes, I start working out the final song structure. That also takes time, usually a year. Only when that is done, the fellow musicians get the titles and the last step begins - fine-tuning and preparing for recording. This last step took about 2 years, 'cause the orchestral arrangements are quite complex this time.
MiM - In the review, we have written about “Tales of a Future Past” the writer said that as long as Ralf Hubert is alive, there is a chance to listen to a new record. But really, do you consider playing and recording music until the last day of your life?
Ralf Hubert - Why not? There are still so many musical things to discover, so many technical boundaries to exceed. And I still have so many ideas …..
MiM - The promo said that with this CD the band created a complex construction that is reminiscent of classic operas. How can a regular fan understand this idea?
Ralf Hubert - To say it in a friendly way, a promoter must not necessarily have knowledge in music and a musician especially me) surely do not read everything that a promoter seems to see in a composition. Two worlds collide .....
MiM - Could we consider the songs “Landscape” 1,2,3 and 4" as a song divided into parts, in “movements” like in a classical opera or they are different songs with just a slight connection between them?
Ralf Hubert - No, the "Landscape (s)" divide the album into 3 segments, which include compositions with a similar character or style. So if you want, you can call them intermezzo or madrigal as they have been called earlier, like the interludes in an opera.
But the titles have indeed (you can see "When all Hope is Gone" as part of them) a deeper background. I've been working for years to transcribe Joseph Konrad's novel "Heart of Darkness" into a piece of music. This attempt regularly brings me to the brink of madness. All "Landscape" titles are actually preliminary studies of a possible musical implementation of the novella theme. So the titles are important to me because, in my opinion, this is the only right way to create a good music version of Konrad's novella.
MiM - It is just a crazy idea of mine or we can find little Spanish guitar influences in “Landscape 4 - Pleasant Ground". Some kind of flamenco playing style?
Ralf Hubert - You are right, "Landscape 4" is originally a composition by Isaac Albeniz - "Sevilla" from his "Suite Español". The idea of adapting this song for the group has been pregnant for an eternity, especially since "Sevilla" belongs to my all-time favorites on Classical guitar and has been played by me since my youth. If I remember correctly, there was already a ready arrangement for the group at the time we recorded the album "Wanderer ..." but that did not fit because of the interludes. Because on “Tales ...” the instrumental titles split the album, so it was I like the title as a conclusion - in the old Mekong tradition of classical adaptations - very well.
MiM - "A Colony of Liar Men" is one of the pieces that the record label has released as a single. Are you in charge of the lyrics too, Ralf? In that case, what is the meaning behind “this colony”?
Ralf Hubert - First of all, what follows now only reflects my opinion, in politically questions I cannot speak for the entire group, every one of us has his own opinion.
Yep, I am in charge of the lyrics of this song and they deal with the permanent try of so-called politics to school the people how to think and how to behave. I am so fed up to hear and see these idiots who never really worked in their life but think that they know everything better.
In the struggle for the prerogative of political interpretation, people are now facing a barrage by everyone possible interest groups, and those lie that the beams bend ("... Eurasia was never at war with Oceania .." if you know what I mean ;) ). Above all, the media, the megaphones of the self-righteous, which have long forgotten that their job is to report facts neutrally and not to make any opinions common and then sell them as articles (unless they have been marked that way). And no attempt is left out to influence the masses. Everything that is listed in the narrative at the end of the "Colony of Liar Men" -"Framing", "Overtone Window", etc.. I am pretty sure that the people have brains enough to form their own opinion if only facts would be reported. To make matters even worse, our society is shattered into smaller and smaller parts and no one listens to the other. Controversial discussions as I know them from within our group, where arguments are exchanged and where to change your position if the facts presented are logical are more coherent than your own, no longer seem possible there.
MiM - Another interesting song is "Mindeater" and we can recognize that these songs are as part of a unique idea. Is that correct?
Ralf Hubert - You are right from a lyrical point of view, both songs deal with manipulation, but there is a big difference in the composing side. "Mindeater" and also "The Hollow Men" are more worked out for a metal group and the instruments aren´t using in the way it has been done in "Colony of Liar Men". Guitar and bass are used more in a classical metal/thrash group style.
MiM - My mind was blown listening to the work of Alex Landenburgn on drums. When you write the songs, you write the drums parts too? I think that the talent of Alex is exploited here as never before.
Ralf Hubert - No, for all compositions I only define the riffs and the order. And those are not up for discussion. For the drums, I only specify the time signature and compose a basic structure so that Alex knows how I imagine it to be. The elaboration and the final arrangement of the drums come from Alex. I would never interfere with Peter's solos, they always blow me away, and Martin always sends me so many vocal ideas that I don't even know what to take, because they're all fantastic.
MiM - Maybe it’s because it’s difficult to see Mekong Delta touring to Spain but we think the band doesn´t do long tours. Is that correct? Did you have plans for a tour this year that were broken due to the virus?
Ralf Hubert - Basically, we always like live shows. The problem is rather to coordinate the whole countries from which we have requests for a tour. Individual shows are – except big festivals - for us always an extreme logistical problem, all musicians first have to have time.
Concerning festivals, you usually know this a year before, but at a single show which shall take place 4 months later, this is impossible to coordinate. The "funny" thing is that this time several shows in Europe for the first time actually had been coordinated that way, that all of them took place within a month as I requested and not scattered over half a year. Well, this little piece of DNA has now changed our live plans. We will see whether we can organize this one more time for 2021. At the moment I really don't know.
MiM - Is there anything you would like to say to your Spanish fans.
Ralf Hubert - Yes, as part of Mekong Delta I would like to thank all fans supporting us over the years. Thanx, without you every group would be nothing.
