"La banda nunca se disolvió. Es justo decir que nos quemamos".
MiM - La promoción dijo que veinticinco años después de su álbum debut se convirtió en oro en Canadá; en 2018 volvió Sven Gali. ¿Qué pasa exactamente? ¿Qué tenía en mente para preparar un regreso solo 25 años después?
Sven Gali - El "regreso" no fue algo que planeamos. El tiempo lo es todo, y en el caso de la fabricación / grabación de SG3, todo se alineó a donde tenía que estar para avanzar. Teníamos / continuamos teniendo asuntos pendientes para atender, y este EP es solo el primer paso.
MiM - Su primer CD, Sven Gali fue realmente apreciado y la banda ganó diferentes premios, lanzando "InWire". ¿Por qué la banda se disolvió en su mejor momento?
Sven Gali - La banda nunca se disolvió. Estuvimos en el camino constantemente durante más de una década, es justo decir que nos quemamos. Nunca perdimos contacto y tocamos juntos ocasionalmente. Después del fallecimiento de Dee, necesitábamos tiempo para reflexionar y sanar: era nuestro hermano y fue un momento doloroso para todos. Cada uno de nosotros pasó a las siguientes etapas de nuestras vidas: formar familias, establecer negocios, etc., pero en el fondo siempre supimos que cuando llegara el momento, estaríamos de regreso. Y ahora, es el momento correcto.
MiM: Este nuevo Ep incluye dos canciones de 2018-2019, "Kill the Lies" y "You Won't Break Me", y dos con sonidos más recientes, "Now" y "Hurt". Esto me hace pensar, ¿Tocarás canciones de tus dos CD anteriores en tus futuros conciertos?
Sven Gali - Tocamos material tanto del primer álbum (Sven Gali) como de "Inwire". Elegimos material de esos discos que resuenan con nosotros y nuestros fanáticos. En el futuro agregaremos más material de "Inwire". "Inwire" es un disco del que todos estamos muy orgullosos. Habla y demuestra el crecimiento de Sven Gali como músicos y personas.
MiM - Los retornos de otras bandas están marcados por su continuidad en el estilo musical. La misma música que tocaban en el pasado. Sin embargo, el cambio es claro en Sven Gali, ¿Por qué decidiste escribir música nueva y más moderna?
Sven Gali - Gracias por la pregunta, es muy buena. En la pregunta anterior mencioné el crecimiento musical y personal de Sven Gali a lo largo de los años. Escribimos gran parte del material en el primer disco ocho años antes de que fuera lanzado. El cambio "dramático" del primer registro a "Inwire" es orgánico en el sentido de que crecimos y evolucionamos. Con SG3, el sonido no fue intencional ni artificial: no estábamos tratando de aprovechar el factor nostálgico para vender nuestra música. Hacemos, y siempre hemos hecho lo que queremos cuando queremos. Nuestra música proviene de nuestros corazones y almas en nuestros propios términos.
MiM - Fue interesante que dos de las canciones fueron producidas por David Bendeth, el hombre que firmó la banda para BMG Music Canada en 1991 y produjo el debut homónimo. ¿Estuviste en contacto todo este tiempo?
Sven Gali - David es un amigo cercano y personal y es alguien a quien todos respetamos profundamente como músico, artista de grabación y productor. Nos mantuvimos en contacto a lo largo de los años y nunca hubo una pregunta sobre su producción de material en SG3.
MiM - El otro productor es Jon Howard, ¿por qué lo elegiste?
Sven Gali - En primer lugar, Jon Howard es una persona extremadamente talentosa. Tenía un crédito de escritura en "You Won’t Break Me" y cantaba coros en la pista. Nos llevamos bien y trabajamos muy bien juntos en esa pista. Sentimos que la química y la relación que desarrollamos en "Break Me" trascendería en “Now” and “Hurt”, y eso fue exactamente lo que hizo.
MiM - Tu video más reciente es para la canción "Now". ¿Por qué elegiste esta canción?
Sven Gali - "Now" nos eligió. La canción es Sven Gali en este momento. Es pesada, es melódica, rezuma actitud, y está lleno del vigor y la pasión que impulsó a Sven Gali a elevarse por encima de las otras bandas en los primeros días.
MiM - En "Now", tu cantas como nunca antes. ¿Cómo puede ser posible? ¿Sigue entrenando su voz en nuevas técnicas?
Sven Gali - ¡Gracias por el cumplido! Nunca he dejado de cantar. Trabajar con Jon Howard me ha ayudado a explorar timbres previamente inexplorados en mi voz. Escribo la letra y creo en lo que estoy cantando. Mi voz proviene del corazón, esa es la única técnica en la que me centro.
MiM: Fue realmente un desastre cuando el COVID-19 rompió los planes de gira de la banda. ¿Tenías una estrategia para el futuro? ¿Hay planes para venir a Europa o España?
Sven Gali - Habríamos estado en Europa en este momento si no fuera por el C19. El éxito abrumador de SG3 hace que los promotores y compradores de festivales en Europa y el Reino Unido estén ansiosos por poner a Sven Gali en la cara de las personas.

MiM - The promo said that twenty-five years after their debut album went Gold in Canada; in 2018 Sven Gali came back. What happen exactly? What was in your mind to prepare a comeback just 25 years later?
Sven Gali - The “comeback” was not something we planned. Timing is everything, and in the case of the making / recording of SG3, everything aligned to where it needed to be for us to move forward. We had/continue to have unfinished business to attend to, and this EP is only the first step.
MiM - Your first CD, Sven Gali was really appreciated and the band won different awards, releasing “InWire”. Why the band disbanded in their better moment?
Sven Gali - The band never disbanded. We were on the road constantly for over a decade - it is fair to say we were burnt out. We never lost touch and played the occasional show together. After the passing of Dee we needed time to reflect and heal - he was our brother and it was a painful time for everyone. Each of us moved on to the next stages of our lives - starting families, establishing businesses, etc., but deep inside we always knew that when the time was right, we would be back. And now, the time is right.
MiM - This new Ep includes two songs from 2018-2019, "Kill the Lies" and "You Won't Break Me", and two more recent sounds "Now" and "Hurt". This situation make me think. Will you play songs from your previous two CD’s in your future concerts?
Sven Gali - We play material from both the first album (Sven Gali), and “Inwire”. We choose material from those records that resonate with us and our fans. In the future, we will be adding more material from “Inwire”. “Inwire” is a record we are all very proud of. It speaks to and demonstrates the growth of Sven Gali as musicians, and people.
MiM - Other bands returns are marked by their continuity in musical style. The same music they were playing in the past. However, the change is clear in Sven Gali, because you decided to write new music, and more modern, why?
Sven Gali - Thank you for the question, it is a very good one. In the question above, I mentioned the musical and personal growth of Sven Gali throughout the years. We wrote much of the material on the first record 8 years before it was released. The “dramatic” change from the first record to “Inwire” is organic in that we grew and evolved. With SG3, the sound was not intentional or contrived - we were not trying to leverage the nostalgic factor to sell our music. We do, and always have done what we want when we want. Our music comes from our hearts and souls on our own terms.
MiM - It was interesting that two of the songs were produced by David Bendeth, the man who signed the band to BMG Music Canada in 1991 and produced the self-titled debut. Were you in contact all this time?
Sven Gali - David is a close and personal friend and is someone who we all deeply respect as a musician, a recording artist, and a producer. We stayed in touch throughout the years and there was never a question as to him producing material on SG3.
MiM - The other producer is Jon Howard, why did you choose him.
Sven Gali - First and foremost, Jon Howard is an extremely talented person. He had a writing credit on “You Won’t Break Me” and sang backing vocals on the track. We got along and worked really well together on that track. We felt that the chemistry and relationship we developed on “Break Me” would transcend into “Now” and “Hurt” - and it did just that.
MiM - Your more recent video is for the song “Now”. Why did you choose this song?
Sven Gali - “Now” chose us. The song is Sven Gali at this moment in time. It is heavy, it is melodic, it oozes attitude, and it is full of the vigor and passion that fueled Sven Gali to rise above the other bands in the early days.
MiM - In “Now”, you sing like never before. How could it be possible? Is he still training his voice in new techniques?
Sven Gali - Thank you for the compliment! I have never stopped singing. Working with Jon Howard has helped me explore previously unexplored timbres in my voice. I write the lyrics, and I believe in what I am singing. My voice comes from the heart - that is the only technique I focus on.
MiM - It was really a disaster when the COVID-19 broke the band’s touring plans. Did you have a strategy for the future? Are there plans for coming to Europe or Spain?
Sven Gali - We would have been in Europe right now if it weren’t for C19. The overwhelming success of SG3 has promoters and festival buyers in Europe and the UK very eager to get Sven Gali in people's faces.
MiM – Is there something else you would like to say? This is your moment.
