Greg Hart, guitarrista y productor de la banda, responde a las preguntas de Tony González sobre su nuevo disco 'Atlantis' y el sonido personal de Cats in Space.

MiM - Hola amigo. Es Tony Gonzalez de Made in Metal. Sigo a la banda desde el principio y hemos reseñado todos vuestros álbumes en nuestro sitio web. Déjenme confesarles que no esperaba nada diferente con 'Atlantis' pero hay más que en el pasado. ¿Hasta dónde crees que llegarás en el futuro?

CiS - Con CATS no conocemos límites, siempre que sigamos explorando todos los sonidos fabulosos de los 70 y sintamos que tenemos algo que decir. ¡Continuaremos el mayor tiempo posible! El nuevo álbum muestra mucho más nuestro lado "rock en vivo" ...

MiM - Siempre he visto tu música como una mezcla entre Electric Light Orchestra y Queen. ¿Me equivoco? Quizás haya más.

CiS - ¡Aceptamos esas comparaciones, gracias! Y sí, estoy enormemente influenciado por Queen, especialmente porque escribieron canciones tan variadas y tan "embriagadoras", ese es el sonido al que siempre quise apuntar, enormes armonías, gran producción y voces emotivas.

MiM - El proceso de grabación tomó nueve meses como las viejas bandas clásicas y el resultado es como las viejas bandas clásicas, pero dime, ¿cómo pudiste hacerlo? Estabas en el estudio probando diferentes ideas o alguno de ustedes se estaba tomando el tiempo que el confinamiento nos dio para crear 'Atlantis'.

CiS - Pasamos mucho tiempo grabando, ya que las canciones son complejas. Las ideas iniciales para las canciones pueden surgir razonablemente rápido, pero en el estudio es donde comienza la diversión y, como productor, tengo un "resultado final" muy claro que nuestro objetivo es lograr a cualquier costo ... ¡lo cual se vuelve costoso!

MiM - ¿Hay un concepto, una historia detrás de 'Atlantis' como estaba detrás de 'Daytrip to Narnia'? ¿Cuáles son las principales diferencias entre ellos?

CiS - ¡Siempre digo que depende del oyente construir la imagen para que pueda tomar sus propias decisiones y fantasear ¡tal vez! Aunque siempre hay cosas ocultas en nuestras grabaciones, ¡tenlo por seguro!

MiM - Permítanme confesarles que estaba un poco triste cuando descubrí que Paul Manzi dejó la banda, pero ahora escuchando a Damien Edwards creo que encontraron un buen reemplazo. ¿Dónde encontraste a Damien? ¿Participó en el proceso de escritura?

CiS - Damien es increíble, contribuirá al próximo álbum, estoy seguro, y también terminó un par de letras para Atlantis; tiene bastante talento.

MiM - Otro músico interesante es Mike Moran y su orquesta. ¿Cómo va a gestionar la banda las partes orquestales en una gira futura?

CiS - ¡Nuestro teclista Andy Stewart es un maravilloso músico con múltiples talentos y su destreza con el teclado es impresionante! ¡Él lo resolverá! ¡Ya lo veras!

MiM - Me gustaría preguntarte sobre algunas canciones. "Dive" y "Spaceshift Superstar" son realmente fuertes, la mejor manera de comenzar un CD. ¿Escogisteis como primeras pistas por su fuerza o hubo otra razón?

CiS - Esas canciones fueron escritas para esa posición exacta - Siempre planifico el álbum desde el principio para saber exactamente qué canciones necesitaremos y adónde ir. Es como un rompecabezas.

MiM - ¿Hay alguna canción que aparentemente sea simple pero no lo es? Estoy hablando de "Sunday best" que veo como una mezcla entre "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" y la era del Paradise Theatre de Styx. Cómo se concibió esta canción.

CiS - Buena decisión ... Sí, es una melodía genial y una letra maravillosa de Steevi Bacon, y fue un número típico de CATS divertido en el que simplemente hacemos que todo sea soleado y brillante. El solo tomó años, ya que es una verdadera vibra de "Brian May", ¡y estoy satisfecho con el resultado que obtuve de alrededor de 30 Les Paul! Además, ¿alguien ha escuchado un indicio de "Carol Bayer Sager"? ¡El silbato está justo después de su golpe! MiM - En este momento, muchas bandas están escribiendo canciones llamadas “Revolution”. En su propio caso personal, ¿qué tipo de revolución está pidiendo?

CiS - Conseguir un gobierno en algún lugar que diga la verdad y deje de eludir un montón de tonterías ... y realmente ayude a la gente. Vivo en la esperanza.

MiM - “Listen to the Radio” es una canción alegre donde el coro es hermoso. ¿Cómo trabajas las líneas corales? ¿Es una grabación multicapa o todos ustedes cantan?

CiS - Las voces están superpuestas por Damien, yo, Jeff Brown y Mick Wilson, por supuesto, y todos cantamos múltiples armonías muchas veces y las mezclamos, las cosas muy altas las hago normalmente yo, aunque Damien canta más alto que yo ...

MiM - "I Fell Out Of Love With Rock 'n Roll" es una canción de estilo crooner. El estilo vocal me recuerda a George Michael y el final es como "Hey Jude" cincuenta años después. ¿Quizás mi idea estaba completamente equivocada y la banda toca la canción pensando en algo muy diferente?

CiS - Quería escribir nuestro "Hey Jude", pero un himno para CATS, y es personal para mí, así que posiblemente sea mi canción favorita que haya escrito.

MiM - Al escuchar su música, es fácil descubrir que todos ustedes son músicos con un conocimiento extraordinario en música, no solo teoría sino también historia. Cuando escucho “Marionettes” pensé en “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” de City Boy mezclada con la banda sonora de Tim Burton. Creo que me he atrevido demasiado a decirte esto y estás aburrido de leerme, jaja. Por favor, ten paciencia y cuéntame más sobre esta peculiar canción.

CiS - ¡Lo has pillado! City Boy es una gran influencia para nosotros, y el genio extraño de Tim Burton es algo que siempre está cerca de lo que hacemos, su maravillosa música cinematográfica ENORME que es de lo que se trata CATS y cada álbum que hacemos siempre es épico. Esta vez, "Marionettes" era la canción, y era muy grandiosa y con un estilo de "partitura de película", tardó años en terminar y la producción de los sonidos requirió mucha experimentación. Teníamos pianos grabados en un armario, cucharas de metal golpeando las cuerdas de un piano de cola, viejos sintetizadores de la década de 1970 ... sonidos locos y, por supuesto, las increíbles cantantes de "The Australian Pink Floyd" que suenan increíbles ... ¡Maravilloso!

MiM - Algo que me encanta mucho es cuando la banda toca con influencias del pop de los setenta como en "Magic Lovin’ Feelin ’". Esto me hace pensar que sois una banda para adultos. ¿Qué público esperas habitualmente en tus conciertos?

CiS - Nuestra audiencia es universal ... desde niños hasta abuelos, ya que a todos les encanta una melodía, además de que nos divertimos mucho en el escenario, por lo que es entretenido, que al final del día es todo lo que deseamos ser, querida.

MiM - He leído que estás planeando una gira en 2021 fuera de Inglaterra. Sé que han tocado en Alemania, pero no sé si ya estuviste aquí en España. ¿Hay alguna posibilidad de venir aquí para hacer una gira?

CiS - Queremos ir a todas partes, así que, si la gente nos quiere en su país, vendremos si hay un promotor dispuesto a traernos.

MiM - Si hay algo que te gustaría decirles a tus fans españoles, este es tu momento.

CiS - Espero poder verte pronto y gracias por tu apoyo ... ¡Si hay suficientes fans en España, vendremos! MANTÉNGASE SEGUROS Y RECUERDEN ... ¡TODOS QUIEREN SER UN GATO!

MiM - Sé que hay momentos difíciles para la música, pero intenta resistir y mantener a la banda en vivo porque necesitamos tu música y tu felicidad. Mis mejores deseos y esperamos que 2021 sea mejor para la banda y para todos nosotros.

“With CATS we know no limits. We will go on for as long as possible!”

Greg Hart, guitar player and producer of the band, answer the questions made by Tony Gonzalez about their new CD, 'Atlantis' and the personal sound of Cats in Space.

MiM - Hello friend. It’s Tony Gonzalez from Made in Metal. I follow the band since the very beginning and we reviewed all your albums in our website. Let me confess you that I didn´t expect anything different with “Atlantis” but there is more than in the past. How far do you think you will go in the future?

CiS - With CATS we know no limits, as long as we keep exploring all the fab sounds from the 70s and we feel we have something to say we will go on for as long as possible! The new album shows our ‘live rock’ side a lot more.

MiM - I have always seen your music as a mix between Electric Light Orchestra and Queen. Am I wrong? Maybe there is more.

CiS - We will take those comparisons thanks! , and yes I am hugely influenced by Queen especially as they wrote songs so varied and so’ intoxicating’, that’s the sound I was always wanting to aim for, huge harmonies, huge production, and emotive vocals.

MiM - The recording process took nine months like the old classic bands and the result is as the old classic bands but tell me, how could you make it? You were in the studio testing different ideas or any of you were taking the time the lockdown gives us to create “Atlantis”.

CiS - We spend a long time recording, as the songs are complex. The initial ideas for the songs can come reasonably quickly, but in the studio is where the fun starts and as a producer, I have a very clear ‘end result’ that we aim to achieve at any cost… which does get expensive!

MiM - Is there a concept, a story behind 'Atlantis' as it was behind 'Daytrip to Narnia' ? What are the main differences between them?

CiS - I always say it’s up to the listener to build the picture so they can make their own minds up and fantasize maybe! There’s always hidden stuff in our records tho for sure.

MiM - Let me confess you that I was a little sad when I discover Paul Manzi left the bad but now, listening to Damien Edwards I think you find a good replacement. Where did you find Damien? Did he participate in the writing process?

CiS - Damien is amazing, he will be contributing to the next album I am sure, and he finished a couple of lyrics off for Atlantis too- he’s quite some talent.

MiM - Another interesting musician is Mike Moran and his orchestra. How is the band going to manage the orchestral parts in a future tour?

CiS - Our keyboard player Andy Stewart is a wonderful multi-talented player and his keyboard prowess is stunning! He will work it out! Ha!

MiM - I would like to ask you about some songs. “Dive” and “Spaceshift Superstar” are really strong, the best way to start a CD. Did you choose as the first tracks because of their force or there was another reason?

CiS - Those songs were written for that exact position- I always plan the album from the start so I know exactly what songs we will need and where to go. It’s like a puzzle.

MiM - Is there a song that apparently is simple but it isn’t. I´m talking about “Sunday best” that I see as a mix between “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon” and Styx’s Paradise Theatre era. How this song was conceived.

CiS - Good call.. Yes it’s a cracking tune and wonderful lyric from Steevi Bacon, and it was a fun typical CATS number where we just make everything sunny and bright. The solo took ages as it’s a real ‘Brian May’ vibe, and I am pleased with the result I got there from around 30 Les Pauls! In addition, does anyone hear a hint of ‘Carol Bayer Sager’? The whistle is right off her hit! Editor's Note - Carol Bayer Sager is a songwriter who has worked for more than 30 famous singers like Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Christopher Cross, Fran Sinatra, and many more)

MiM - At this moment, many bands are writing songs called “Revolution”. In your own personal case, what kind of revolution are you calling for?

CiS - To get a government somewhere that will just tell the truth and stop skirting around a load of bullshit….and actually help the people. I live in hope.

MiM - “Listen to the Radio” is a happy song where the choir is beautiful. How do you work the choral lines? It is a multi-layer recording or all of you sing?

CiS - The vocals are layered by Damien, Myself, Jeff Brown and Mick Wilson of course, and we all sing multi harmonies many times and blend them together, the very high stuff is normally me, tho Damien sings higher than me…

MiM - “I Fell Out Of Love With Rock ‘n Roll” is a crooner style song. The vocal style reminds me George Michael and the end is like “Hey Jude” fifty years later. Maybe my idea was completely wrong and the band plays the song thinking on something very different?

CiS - I wanted to write our ‘Hey Jude’, but an anthem for CATS, and it is personal to me so it's possibly my favorite song I have ever written.

MiM - Listening your music, is easy to discover that all of you are musicians with an extraordinary knowledge in music, not only theory but history too. When I listen to “Marionettes” I thought on “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” by City Boy mix with some Tim Burton soundtrack. I think that I’m too dared to tell you this and you are bored of reading me, haha. Please, be patient and tell me more about this peculiar song.

CiS - You have it in one! City Boy is a big influence on us, and Tim Burton's weird genius is something that is always nearby to what we do, its wonderful HUGE cinematic music which is what CATS is all about and every album we always do an epic. This time “Marionettes” was the song, and it was very grandiose and ‘film score’ kind of style- it took ages to finish and the production of the sounds took a lot of experimenting. We had pianos recorded in a cupboard, metal spoons hitting grand piano strings, old 1970s synths...crazy sounds- and of course the amazing girls singers from ‘The Australian Pink Floyd’ who sound incredible.. Wonderful!

MiM - Something that I love a lot is when the band plays with some seventies pop influences like in “Magic Lovin’ Feelin’” This makes me think that you are a band for adult people. What kind of audience do you usually wait in your concerts?

CiS - Our audience is universal.. kids to grandparents, as they all love a melody, plus we are good fun onstage so its entertaining, which at the end of the day is all we wish to be- entertaining my dear!

MiM - I have read that you are planning a tour in 2021 out of England. I know you played in Germany but I don´t know if you already were here in Spain. Is there any possibility to come here for a tour?

CiS - We want to come everywhere, so if people want us in their country we will come if there’s a promoter willing to bring us over!

MiM - If there is something you would like to say to your Spanish fans, this is your moment.

CiS - Hope we can see you soon and thanks for your support… if there’s enough fans in Spain we will come! STAY SAFE AND REMEMBER.. EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A CAT!
