"Muchas de nuestras pequeñas canciones extravagantes tienen inspiración de Queen".
Impresionado por la calidad de las canciones de este disco, contactamos a su principal compositor y multi intrumentista Anders Rydholm, para que nos diera detalles de esto que, en otro momento, sería una obra maestra, 'X Marks the Spot'.
MiM - Mi nombre es Tony González. Soy de Made in Metal Spain. Hola Anders. ¿Cómo estás?
Anders Rydholm - Hola Tony. Estoy bien en una Suecia lluviosa. No hay sol en el sur donde vivo.
MiM - He escuchado tu nuevo CD con el nombre de Art of Illusion. Es asombroso y me gusta mucho. ¿Cuánto tiempo llevó el proceso de grabación?
Anders Rydholm - Hemos estado trabajando en este álbum desde 2015, pero las grabaciones reales no han tardado tanto. Ambos trabajamos con muchas otras cosas, así que hemos hecho una canción aquí y allá. Además, sin estrés, ya que queríamos ser felices con todas las canciones.
MiM - Me imagino que grabaste tus partes en tu casa y el resto de los músicos hizo lo mismo.
Anders Rydholm - Tengo un gran estudio en mi casa y la mayor parte del álbum está grabado aqui. Las voces de Lars y los solos de guitarra se hicieron en otros lugares, ya que todos estamos dispersos. MiM - Escribes toda la música y parte de la letra. ¿Lars Säfsund escribió algunas letras o simplemente cantó las canciones?
Anders Rydholm - Lars no ha escrito ninguna letra, pero ha participado en la composición de dos canciones: "Go" y "Race Against Time". Las letras fueron escritas por mí, Arlene Matza-Jackson y Patrik Ahlm. Una gran virtud de Lars es que interpreta muy bien las letras. Realmente canta con emociones, por lo que es fácil pensar que también participó en la escritura de la letra.
MiM - Algo muy interesante para mí es la forma en que se escribe y se canta el coro en las canciones. ¿Cómo te las arreglaste para lograrlo?
Anders Rydholm - Buena pregunta y la respuesta varía. En muchas de las canciones, Lars hizo los arreglos para el coro y comenzó a cantar coros y después de eso doblé sus voces con Per Svensson. También agregué algunas frases y partes adicionales con Per. La razón para agregar la voz de Per es solo para que suene más grande. Las voces de fondo de Lars suenan muy bien por sí mismas, pero al agregar una segunda voz, simplemente suena más grande.
En un par de canciones, hice los arreglos de fondo y Per cantó sus partes primero. Lars luego agregó sus partes. Ambas formas funcionan muy bien, pero realmente quise aportaciones e ideas de Lars. Dado que escribo la música y la melodía, creo que fue una buena idea que Lars cantara primero sus ideas vocales de fondo. Eso agrega algo más y nuevo a todo el arreglo. Si hubiéramos vivido más cerca el uno del otro, estoy seguro de que habríamos trabajado juntos en la formación de los arreglos y durante las grabaciones reales.
MiM – Leí que este Cd es un homenaje a Queen, Giant y Big Money. Sin embargo, en varias canciones escucho algunas influencias de Toto. ¿Me equivoco?
Anders Rydholm - No, no te equivocas en absoluto. Ambos somos grandes fans de Toto, pero creo que la influencia de Toto es menor que en los álbumes de Grand Illusion y Work of Art. Algunas de las primeras canciones que grabamos, como "Run", tienen más "influencias de Toto" que las posteriores como "Let The Games Begin" y "My Loveless Lullaby". Por lo tanto, nos movemos cada vez más en otra dirección y nos alejamos de nuestras influencias Toto.
MiM - Canciones como "Waltz for the movies" y la divertida "A Culinary Detour" me hacen pensar en Queen. ¿Cómo se concibió "A Culinary Detour"?
Anders Rydholm - He escrito muchas de estas pequeñas canciones extravagantes y tienen mucha inspiración de Queen. Lars y yo amamos a Freddie Mercury y su forma de divertirse con la música. Este es nuestro giro y forma de tratar de divertirnos y usar el humor con la música. Una banda sueca llamada Big Money, hizo el mismo tipo de tributos a Queen.
Escribo la música y la letra y luego canto una demo sobre cómo escucho la canción que se canta y verifico con Lars si le gusta la idea o no. No soy un buen cantante, pero trato de cantar con mucha expresión y dinámica, para que Lars entienda mi idea y Lars haga un arreglo vocal realmente genial de mis ideas. Tenemos más canciones como esta con temas como: "The Kings Crown", "Tame the Bull" (comparando las corridas de toros con una mujer enojada), “Time Travel” y muchas más cosas. Ojalá puedas escucharlas algún día.
En “My Culinary Detour” hice todo el arreglo musical y la grabación antes de enviar mi demo a Lars. Toco todos los instrumentos en estas pistas. En “Waltz for the Movies” solo le envié a Lars mi demo vocal y una pista de piano. Después de eso, comencé a hacer los arreglos musicales y lo grabé. Dos días después, obtuve las pistas vocales de Lars y fue solo para importarlas. Nunca escuchó mi arreglo musical antes de hacer lo suyo, pero aun así hizo un arreglo vocal y una grabación perfectos y nuestro esfuerzo conjunto es lo que escuchas en el álbum. No cambié nada. Solo agregué sus pistas vocales e hice una mezcla. Eso es lo que escuchas en el álbum. Ambos usamos mucho color en nuestro arreglo, pero cada nota funcionó muy bien. Dos mentes que piensan igual.
Todas las pistas vocales de "My Culinary Detour" y "Waltz for the Movies" son de Lars. Tanto la voz principal, las voces de fondo y las voces de ópera. Todo es Lars.
MiM - Me gustaría preguntarte sobre más canciones. ¿Por qué elegiste "Wild and Free" como video?
Anders Rydholm - Nos gusta esa canción. Una respuesta simple y, por supuesto, podríamos haber hecho videos para otras canciones. El primer video que publicamos fue para "My Loveless Lullaby", ya que es una canción que creemos que es buena y única. “Wild and Free” es un poco más rockera así que pensamos que era un buen segundo video que mostraba algo diferente de nosotros musicalmente.
MiM - Una de mis canciones favoritas es "Go". Por favor, ¿podrías contarme más sobre esto?
Anders Rydholm - Una de las primeras canciones del proceso de grabación. Escribí la idea básica de la canción y a Lars le gustó, pero quería cambiar la melodía del pre-estribillo, así que escribió una nueva melodía para el pre-estribillo. Un buen amigo mío, Patrik Ahlm, de la banda de los 80 Time Gallery, escribió la letra. Patrik suele hacer mucha autorreflexión en sus letras, así que supongo que esta es su forma de decir que tienes que dejar de pensar y empezar a actuar.
MiM - Me sorprendió cuando leí que tenías a Jay Graydon como invitado en tu CD. El único Jay Graydon que recuerdo es la bestia que ha trabajado con los músicos más importantes de este mundo. ¿Ese hombre es tu invitado en el CD o fue solo una coincidencia?
Anders Rydholm - Sí, es el famoso guitarrista y productor Jay Graydon. Jay toca el solo de la canción "Race Against Time". Es famoso tanto por su estilo de tocar como por su sonido de guitarra, pero en esta canción toca algo completamente diferente a su estilo normal y con un sonido que nunca le había escuchado usar antes. Esa es la marca de un maestro. Saber qué hacer y combinar la reproducción y el sonido perfectamente con la canción.
Jay Graydon es un buen amigo mío y me lo presentó el difunto Sherwood Ball en 2005. El Sr. Graydon también ha tocado en un par de álbumes que he producido en el pasado y también hemos escrito algunas canciones juntos.
MiM - ¿Existe alguna posibilidad de traer este proyecto como banda en directo en el futuro?
Anders Rydholm: No sé qué pasará cuando termine la pandemia, pero nosotros mismos nos vemos más como una banda grabando música que tocando en vivo, ya que solo somos dos personas. Pero nunca debes decir nunca. En Suecia hay muy pocas oportunidades de tocar en vivo hoy en día. Es una pena y espero que cambie en el futuro.
MiM - ¿Hay algo más que le gustaría contarle a su fan españoles?
Anders Rydholm - Espero que todos los fans españoles disfruten de nuestra música y que algún día podamos conocerlos a todos, cuando termine la pandemia. Estaba en España de vacaciones a principios de febrero, cuando estalló la pandemia, y espero poder regresar pronto. Amo España !!!

Impressed by the quality of the songs in this recording, we met its main songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anders Rydholm, to know more details about this Cd, in the past maybe a masterpiece, "X Marks the Spot".
MiM - My name is Tony Gonzalez. I’m from Made in Metal Spain. Hello Anders. How are you?
Anders Rydholm - Hi Tony. I am fine in rainy Sweden. No sun in the southern parts where I live.
MiM - I have listened to your new CD under the monicker Art of Illusion. It is amazing and I like it a lot. How long does it take the recording process?
Anders Rydholm - We have been working on this album since 2015, but the actual recordings have not taken that long. We both work with a lot of other stuff, so we have done a song here and there. Also, no stress, since we wanted to be happy with all the songs.
MiM - I imagine that you recorded your parts in your house and any of the musicians did the same.
Anders Rydholm - I have a big studio in my house and most of the album is recorded in my house. Lars vocals and guitar solos were done at other places since we all are scattered out. Lars lives in Stockholm, 450 kilometers north of me and some of the guests live far away too. Los Angeles and Sarajevo, Bosnia, for example.
MiM - You write all the music and part of the lyrics. Does Lars Säfsund wrote some lyrics or just sang the songs?
Anders Rydholm - Lars hasn’t written any lyrics, but he has been involved in the songwriting on two songs: “Go” and “Race Against Time”. Lyrics were written by myself, Arlene Matza-Jackson, and Patrik Ahlm. A big strength of Lars is that he interprets the lyrics so well. He really sings with emotions, so it’s easy to think that he has been involved in writing the lyrics as well.
MiM - Something very interesting to me is the way the choir is written and sung in the songs. How did you manage to achieve that? (For example, I’m asking because maybe you ask Lars to sing in different voices or it was done by Per Svensson alone)
Anders Rydholm - Good question and It varies. On many of the songs, Lars has done the choir arrangements and started to sing background vocals and I have after that dubbed his vocals with Per Svensson. I also have added some extra phrases and parts with Per. The reason for adding Per’s voice is just to make it sound bigger. Lars's background vocals sound great on their own, but by adding a second voice, it simply sounds bigger.
On a couple of songs, I have made the background arrangements and Per have sung his parts first. Lars has then added his parts after that. Both ways work great, but I really want Lars's input and ideas. Since I write the music and the melody, I think it’s a good idea that Lars sings his background vocal ideas first. That adds something more and new to the whole arrangement. If we would have lived closer to each other, I am sure that we would have worked together on forming the arrangements and during the actual recordings.
MiM - I read the Cd is an homage to Queen, Giant, and Big Money. However, in several songs, I listen to some Toto influences. Am I wrong?
Anders Rydholm - No, you are not wrong at all. We both are big Toto fans but I think the Toto influence is less than on both the Grand Illusion and Work of Art albums. Some of the early songs we recorded, like “Run”, has more “Toto-influences” than the later ones like “Let The Games Begin” and “My Loveless Lullaby”. Therefore, we are moving more and more in another direction and away from our Toto influences.
MiM - Songs like “Waltz for the movies” and the funny “A culinary detour” makes me think of Queen. How “A culinary detour” was conceived?
Anders Rydholm - I have written many of these small quirky songs, and they have a lot of Inspiration from Queen. Lars and I love Freddie Mercury and his way of having fun with music. This is our twist and way of trying to have fun and use humor with music. A Swedish band named Big Money did the same kind of tributes to Queen.
I write the music and lyrics and then I sing a demo on how I hear the song being sung and check with Lars if he likes the idea or not. I am not a good singer but I try to sing with lots of expression and dynamics so that Lars understands my idea and Lars then does a really great vocal arrangement of my ideas. We have more songs like this with themes like: “A king’s coronation”, “Tame the Bull” (comparing bullfighting with an angry woman), "Time Travel" and many more things. Hopefully, you will be able to hear them someday.
On “My Culinary Detour” I did the whole music arrangement and recording before I sent my demo to Lars. I play all the instruments on these tracks. On “Waltz for the Movies” I only sent Lars my demo vocal and a piano track. After that, I started to do the music arrangement and recorded that. Two days later, I got the vocal tracks from Lars and it was just to import them. He never heard my music arrangement before he did his thing, but still made a perfect vocal arrangement and recording and our joints effort is what you hear on the album. I didn’t change anything. Just imported his vocal tracks and did a mix. That’s what you hear on the album. We both used a lot of color in our arrangement, but every note worked together great. Two minds thinking alike.
All vocal tracks on “My Culinary Detour” and “Waltz for the Movies”, is Lars. Both the lead vocal, the background vocals, and the opera voices. All is Lars.
MiM - I would like to ask you about more songs. Why did you choose “Wild and Free” as a video?
Anders Rydholm - We like that song. A simple answer and we could of course have done videos for other songs. The first video we released was for “My Loveless Lullaby” since that’s a song that we think is both good and unique. “Wild and Free” is a little bit more straight-up rock so we thought that was a good second video that showed something different of us musically.
MiM - One of my favorite songs is “Go”. Please, could you tell me more about it?
Anders Rydholm - One of the earlier songs in the recording process. I wrote the basic idea for the song and Lars liked it, but wanted to change the melody of the pre-chorus, so he wrote a new melody for the pre-chorus. A good friend of mine, Patrik Ahlm, from the 80’s band Time Gallery, wrote the lyrics. Patrik usually does a lot of self-reflection in his lyrics, so I guess that this is his way of saying that you need to stop thinking and start to act.
MiM - I was surprised when I read you had Jay Graydon as a guest in your CD. The only Jay Graydon I remember is the beast who has worked with the biggest musicians in this world. Is that man your guest in the CD or it was just a coincidence?
Anders Rydholm - Yes, it’s the famous guitar player and producer Jay Graydon. Jay plays the solo on the song “Race Against Time”. He is famous for both his playing style and his guitar sound, but in this song, he plays something completely different from his normal style and with a sound I have never heard him use before. That’s the mark of a master. To know what to do and to match both playing and sound perfectly to the song.
Jay Graydon is a good friend of mine that and I was introduced to him by the late Sherwood Ball, in 2005. Mr. Graydon also has played on a couple of albums I have produced in the past and we have also written some songs together.
MiM - Is there any possibility to bring this project as a live band in the future?
Anders Rydholm - I don’t know what happens when the pandemic is over, but we ourselves more see ourselves as a band recording music than playing live, since we only consist of two people. But you should never say never. In Sweden, there are very few opportunities to play live nowadays. That’s a pity and I hope that it will change in the future.
MiM - Is there anything else you would like to tell your Spanish fan?
Anders Rydholm - I hope that all Spanish fans will enjoy our music and that we someday will be able to meet you all when the pandemic is over. I was in Spain on holiday in the beginning of February, when the pandemic broke out, and I hope that I soon will be able to come back again. Love Spain!!!
