"Siempre tratamos de escribir la música que queríamos tocar en vivo".
Entrevistamos a Michel Langevin, batería y miembro fundador de Voivod, quien nos habla del nuevo CD "Synchro Anarchy" y parte de la historia de la banda su pasado, presente y futuro.
MiM - Michel, soy Tony Gonzalez de Made in Metal, España, pero nací en Cuba. Al comienzo de esta entrevista quiero decirte esto porque tal vez sepas, tal vez no, que en Cuba, recuerdo cuando era joven que CD's como "Killing Technology" y "Dimension Hatross" eran muy apreciados y muchos músicos estudian la música porque desde el primer disco, la banda era diferente. ¡Sabes que la banda es diferente!
Voivod - Oh, sí. No sabía que éramos populares en Cuba. Eso es increíble.
MiM - Sí, he sido fan desde hace unos 30 años, y este es el momento en el que quiero comenzar una entrevista porque este año, la banda celebra 40 años de creación. ¿Cómo te sientes con la celebración?
Voivod - Bueno, este año y el próximo, esos dos años serán muy importantes para nosotros. Quiero decir, consideramos que el 40 aniversario es en enero del próximo año 2023 porque ellos se unieron a la banda en 1983 y en enero. El año que viene vamos a celebrar el 40 aniversario, pero este año tenemos mucho que hacer con el nuevo disco, la película de Philip Alcazar, y además, he estado trabajando en las reediciones de “Nothing Face” y “Angel Dust” en vinilo y también una caja del material de Noise en vinilo. Así que si pudiéramos salir de gira, todo sería perfecto.
MiM - Estás de acuerdo, Michael. Quizá el año que viene tengamos más tiempo para celebrar porque este año viene como el pasado, muy mal.
Voivod - Sí, lo sé. Al menos el próximo año, vamos a publicar un libro sobre Voivod. Y también, vamos a intentar lanzar algún tipo de Greatest Hits. Ya veremos. En este momento teníamos planeada una gira mundial a partir de febrero con el lanzamiento del álbum. La gira europea, ya se pospuso para el otoño. Esperamos que la gira norteamericana de este verano suceda y crucemos los dedos.
MiM- Sí. ¿Cómo vas a llamar al CD “Greatest hits”?
Voivod - No, tal vez no. No, encontraré algo.
MiM - Sí, por favor, por favor encuentra algo, porque no puedo imaginar "Grandes éxitos de Voivod".
Voivod - (ríe) No, sería más como “Voivod to the death” o “Voivod and own gang forever” o cualquier cosa, ya sabes, relacionada con esto.
MiM - Sí, pero antes, el próximo cd saldrá el próximo mes. Si. “Synchro Anarchy”. Entonces, hay algunos casos en los que los periodistas preguntan, ¿cuál es la diferencia entre este disco y los lanzamientos anteriores? Pero teniendo en cuenta la música de Voivod siempre ha sido diferente, no sé si esta es una buena pregunta. ¿Qué opinas del nuevo disco?
Voivod - Bueno, en realidad, "The Wake" fue muy bien recibido, así que pusimos algo de presión sobre nuestros hombros. Realmente queríamos que el nuevo álbum fuera tan bueno, si no mejor, que "The Wake". Trabajamos muy, muy duro, pero era difícil ensayar por el confinamiento. MiM - “The Wake” entró en las listas de éxitos de Alemania, Suiza, Bélgica y USA y me gustaría preguntarte, ¿crees que este éxito añadió más presión para completar la nueva grabación? Déjame confesarte que pensé que dirías que no. Porque, Voivod no es la banda que tiene un “grandes éxitos” o un single. Ahora los tiempos están cambiando. ¿Qué piensas al respecto?
Voivod - Siempre tratamos de escribir la música que queríamos tocar en vivo, por lo que realmente no consideramos lo que está pasando en el “mainstream”. Hacemos música de Voivod, básicamente, y a veces nos ha jugado en contra. Cuando hicimos "Angel Rat" y "The Outer Limits", el grunge era tan grande, que estos álbumes fueron ignorados a principios de los 90, pero ahora la gente que gusta de Voivod adora estos álbumes. Es una indicación de que realmente deberías hacer lo tuyo y encontrar tu propia firma. Ni siquiera tratamos de hacer que la música sea reconocible como Voivod, simplemente la escribimos, la grabamos y la sacamos, con la esperanza de que a la gente le guste. Ahora saltamos a una especie de fusión metal, casi jazz, thrash metal.
Creo que el hecho de que "The Wake" haya sido tan bien recibido es una indicación de que vamos por el camino correcto. La gente que escuchó el disco me ha dicho que es una buena continuación de “The Wake”, pero nosotros no lo pensamos así. Simplemente escribimos estas canciones, básicamente, y parte de ellas las hicimos mientras compartimos el distanciamiento social debido al confinamiento. Tuvimos que compartir archivos en línea y todo ese proceso fue un poco lento porque se ralentizó por la pandemia. Encontramos una fórmula para hacerlo realidad. Supongo que vamos a seguir así y comenzar a escribir material nuevo muy pronto. Espero que a la gente le guste. Hasta el momento, los dos primeros sencillos, a la gente le parece que es la dirección correcta.
MiM - Si a la gente le gusta Voivod, a la gente le gustará “Sinchro Anarchy”, estoy completamente seguro porque he escuchado el CD y lo disfruto mucho. Quisiera preguntarte sobre este disco. Leí que para algunos álbumes creas el concepto y me gustaría preguntarte si hay un concepto detrás de "Synchro Anarchy".
Voivod - No, no. Quiero decir, traté algunos conceptos en los años 80 y para el álbum “Phobos”, pero en estos días, es principalmente Snake quien escribe las letras. Le damos y colaboramos con ideas, pero él es el que está siendo influenciado por lo que está pasando en este momento en este planeta y expresa sus emociones y puntos de vista. A pesar de que el álbum no hable de eso directamente, definitivamente está influenciado por lo que está pasando en este momento. Solíamos tratar de predecir lo que sucedería dentro de 30 años, pero ahora es realmente difícil. Creo que las letras del nuevo disco están más ancladas en el presente, que ya es bastante ciencia ficción. Dado que Snake también tuvo que hacer gran parte del trabajo de forma aislada, puedo sentir la alienación y el aislamiento en el nuevo álbum. Sigue siendo un material distópico.
MiM - Ahora que me dices esto, creo que tal vez puedo sentirlo, pero teniendo en cuenta que no es la primera vez que la banda en 40 años crea una atmósfera de aislamiento, alienación y mundo distópico, pensé que eso era parte de la historia de la banda. Esta es la razón por la que les pregunto, ¿cuál es la gran diferencia en términos de grabación o estado de ánimo en este álbum? Comparando con el anterior.
Voivod - Bueno, la principal diferencia fue que tuvimos que escribir todo en casa durante mucho tiempo. Estábamos compartiendo archivos y tuve que programar la batería en mi computadora para las demos. Realmente aproveché la oportunidad para programar ritmos hechos, como ritmos punk como Killing Joke, con los sonidos y el tiempo del ritmo y también ritmos extraños al revés y todo eso. Mientras escribíamos el álbum, tan pronto como nos lo permitieron, comenzamos a hacer programas en línea en los que regresamos a "Dimension Hatross" y "Nothing Face" y creo que podría haber influido en la escritura de esto también porque tuvimos que aprender estos álbumes de nuevo, y fue mucho trabajo.
También en junio del año pasado, cuando por fin empezamos a grabar, por todas las circunstancias, no estábamos preparados al cien por cien y tuvimos que entregar los masters a finales de septiembre. Éramos como hacer todo a la vez, escribir, grabar, mezclar todo. Mientras hacíamos eso, tocábamos en festivales en la provincia de Quebec el fin de semana, así que fue un verano muy intenso. Esa fue una pequeña diferencia en la que no tuvimos muchos ensayos antes de entrar al estudio. Fuimos al estudio y realmente tuvimos que apresurar todo porque estábamos tratando de juntar fragmentos de canciones. Fue un proceso completamente diferente, pero aprendimos mucho y será muy útil para el próximo álbum. Creo que la fórmula que encontramos para avanzar nos permitirá sacar discos más rápido.
MiM - Entonces trataste de acercarte y sacar la parte más positiva del encierro.
Voivod - Sí, definitivamente. Somos afortunados de poder usar la tecnología para hacerlo en estos días, y no solo por la demostración en el álbum, sino también por el hecho de que pudimos hacer lo que llamamos Hypercube Sessions. Los espectáculos en línea realmente ayudaron, y si no podemos hacer una gira de nuevo por un tiempo debido a la situación o lo que sea, podemos volver a hacer espectáculos en línea donde podemos volver a visitar "Outer Limits" o el nuevo álbum. Este año es el 30 aniversario de “Killing Technology”, por lo que podríamos tocar este álbum. Ya veremos.
MiM - Los miembros de la banda, ¿siguen viviendo en Quebec?
Voivod - Sí, todos vivimos en la provincia de Quebec. Soy el único que vive en Montreal en este momento. Pero todo el mundo está bastante cerca fuera de la isla.

Durante la pandemia, comencé una tienda en línea (www.awayartpress.com) para que mis publicaciones de arte estén disponibles, por lo que estoy muy ocupado como autónomo, lo cual es genial porque muchos de mis amigos tuvieron que separarse de sus bandas o buscar otra línea de trabajo, etc. Tengo mucha suerte porque durante un tiempom en los 90, Voivod tuvo un perfil muy bajo y tenía miedo de convertirme en un artista olvidado. Pero es al revés ahora, Voivod está ganando popularidad, por lo que actualmente tengo más demanda que nunca como artista gráfico, así que al menos puedo confiar en eso, estoy seguro, por el resto de mi vida.
MiM - Cuando escucho la música de Voivod, siempre pensé que eran como una familia porque la música es muy complicada. Solo una persona que conoce a la otra persona con la que está tocando puede hacer esto. Así que me imagino en un escenario más grande en el que tal vez estés en el medio. El bajista está a 20 metros ahí y luego, ¿cómo pueden parar al mismo tiempo, otra vez empezar de nuevo y hacer todos los cambios? Creo que en este momento sois como una familia. Dime, ¿adoptaste a Francis Barron, el productor, como parte de la familia?
Voivod - Oh, sí, definitivamente es parte del equipo y también está trabajando con nosotros para encontrar el sonido perfecto para Voivod. Es un tio metalero y ha sido muy fan de Voivod desde siempre. Era parte de la pandilla con Rocky y Chewy. Estamos trabajando con él para afinar nuestro sonido y desde “Post Society” hasta “Synchro Anarchy” hay una gran diferencia. Leemos todo bien y él también está comprando muchos equipos para que esto suceda. Seguimos haciendo las Hypercube Sessions en su estudio. Definitivamente es parte de la familia seguro.MiM - Voivod es como parte de ti porque creo que, si estas casado, quizás pases más tiempo con Voivod que con tu pareja.
Voivod – (risas) He dedicado treinta y nueve años de mi vida trabajando diariamente en ello, sin mencionar que creé el personaje en los años 70 porque quería hacer cómics. He estado conectado a él desde siempre, y creo que nunca terminará. Ha sido una verdadera montaña rusa en la que a veces la gente me decía que estaba loco por seguir adelante, pero al final, no voy a perder la velocidad en la que ahora somos una banda realmente respetada.
MiM - Cuando estabas lanzando obras maestras como "Killing Technology" o "Dimension Hatross", ¿te imaginaste la situación global actual? ¿El caos, la anarquía, la destrucción, la tecnología asesina?
Voivod - Bueno, es una mezcla de todo. Estar asombrado por lo rápido que sucedió. Ahora tenemos una inteligencia artificial mezclada con armamento de alta tecnología y todo eso, es realmente aterrador. Por supuesto, el escenario de la guerra nuclear está de vuelta en primera línea y la gente está tratando de evadir lentamente este mundo con mundos virtuales. En aquel entonces una segunda vida, ahora el metaverso y, por supuesto, la pandemia y el desastre ambiental y todo eso. El cambio climático, personalmente lo vi venir, pero estaba pensando que tal vez para 2050. Está ahora mismo a un ritmo acelerado y debe ser realmente aterrador para los jóvenes. Quiero decir, si no podemos predecir lo que sucederá dentro de 20 o 25 años, imagínate para las nuevas generaciones. No me sorprende que intenten vivir en un mundo virtual en lugar del real de alguna manera.
MiM - Teniendo en cuenta lo que me dijiste al principio de la entrevista, quizás este año no veamos a Voivod en Europa, quizás el año que viene.
Voivod - En este punto, la gira de primavera en Europa se ha pospuesto para el otoño. Si las cosas se calman un poco y las personas comenzamos a hacerlo de nuevo, es posible que te veamos por allá en este otoño.

"We always try to write the music that we wanted to play live"
Michel Langevin drums and a former member of Voivod, talk to us about their new CD "Synchro Anarchy" a part of the band history
MiM - Michel, I’m Tony Gonzalez from Made in Metal, Spain But I was born in Cuba. At the beginning of this interview I want to tell you this because maybe you know, maybe don’t, that in Cuba, I remember when I was young that Cd’s as “Killing Technology” and “Dimension Hatross” were really appreciated and a lot of musicians study the music because, since the first cd, the band was different. You know that the band is different!
Voivod - Oh, yes. I didn't know we were popular in Cuba. That's amazing.
MiM - Yes, I have been a fan since maybe 30 years ago or so, and this is the moment when I want to start an interview is because this year, the band celebrates 40 years of creation. How do you feel about the celebration?
Voivod - Well, this year and next year, those two years will be really important for us. I mean, we consider the 40th anniversary to be January of next year in 2023 because they joined the band in 1983 and January. We are going to celebrate next year for the 40th anniversary, but this year we have a lot going on with the new album, the movie by Philip Alcazar, and also, I've been working on the reissues of “Nothing Face” and "Angel Dust” on vinyl and also a box set of the Noise material on vinyl as well. So yeah, if only we can go on tour, everything would be perfect.
MiM - You agree, Michael. Maybe next year we have more time to celebrate because this year is coming like the past, very bad.
Voivod - Yes, I know. At least next year, we're going to have a book out about Voivod. And also, we're going to try to release some sort of Greatest Hits. We'll see. Right now we had a world tour planned to start in February with the album released. The European tour, it's already been postponed to the fall. We hope that the North American tour this summer will happen and fingers crossed.
MiM - Yes. What are you going to call the cd “Greatest hits”?
Voivod - No, maybe not. No, I will find something.
MiM - Yes, please, please find something, because I can't imagine “Voivod greatest hits”?
Voivod - No, it would be more like “Voivod to the death” or “Voivod and own gang forever” or anything, you know, like related to whatever.
MiM - Yes, but first, the next cd is coming next month. Yes. “Synchro anarchy”. So there are some cases when the journalists ask, what is the difference between this cd and the previous releases? But taking into account the music of Voivod has been always different, I don't know if this is a good question. What do you think about the new cd?
Voivod - Well, actually, “The Wake” was really well received, so we had put some pressure on our shoulders. We really wanted the new album to be as good, if not better than “The Wake”. We worked really, really hard, but it was difficult to rehearse because of confinement. When we went into the studio in June of last year, we were not 100 percent prepared. We were writing as we were recording and the lyrics were not finished. It was very extreme. I think that we are aiming for a sound very good and I think we are reaching it now. It sounds really good and everybody sounds good and you can hear everything. So far, the first two singles, “Planet Eaters” and “Paranormalium”, have been really well received. Hopefully, people will like the album.
MiM - “The Wake” got in the charts in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and the USA and I would like to ask you, do you think that this success added more pressure to complete the new recording? Let me confess to you that I thought that you will say no because Voivod is not the band that has the greatest hit or a single. Now the times are changing. What do you think about it?
Voivod - We always try to write the music that we wanted to play live, so we don't really consider what's going on in the mainstream. We do Voivod music, basically, and sometimes it has played against us. When we did “Angel Rat” and “The Outer Limits”, grunge was so big and they were kind of these albums were sort of ignored in the early 90s, but now people into Voivod worship these albums. It's an indication that you should really do your own thing and find your own signature. We don't even try to make the music recognizable as Voivod, but we just write it and record it and put it out, hoping that people will like it. Now we jumped into some sort of fusion metal, almost jazz, thrash metal.
I think the fact that “The Wake” was so well received is an indication that we are heading in the right path in a way. I've been told by people who heard the album that it's a good continuation of “The Wake”, but we didn't think it that way. We just wrote these songs, basically, and part of it was done while socially distancing sharing because of the confinement. We had to share files online and all that process was a bit slow because it was slowed down by the pandemic. We found a formula to make it happen. I guess, to keep going this way and start writing new material pretty soon. I'm hoping that people will like it. So far, in the first two singles, people seem really like the direction.
MiM - If the people like Voivod, the people will like “Synchro Anarchy”, I’m completely sure because I have listened to the cd and I enjoy it a lot. I would like to ask you about this cd. I read that for some albums, you create the concept and I would like to ask you if there is a concept behind “Synchro anarchy”.
Voivod - No, no. I mean, I treated some concepts in the 80s and for the album “Phobos”, but these days, it's mainly Snake writing the lyrics. We do ideas at him and we collaborate with ideas, but he's the one being influenced by what's going on right now on this planet and expressing his emotions and point of view. It's even though it doesn't do the album doesn't talk about it directly, it's definitely influenced by what's going on right now. We used to try to predict what was going to happen 30 years down the road, but now it's really difficult. I think that the lyrics of the new album are more anchored in the present, which is already science fiction enough. Since Snake had to do a lot of the work in isolation as well, I can feel the alienation and isolation on the new album. It's still dystopian material.
MiM - Now that you tell me this, I think that maybe I can feel it, but taking into account that is not the first time that the band in 40 years create an atmosphere of isolation, alienation, and a dystopian world, I thought that was part of the story of the band. This is the reason why I ask you, what are there big differences in terms of recording or mood in this album? Compared with the previous.
Voivod - Well, the main difference was that we had to write it well while at home for a long while. We were sharing files and I have to program the drums on my computer for the demos. I really took the opportunity to program beats done as punk beats like Killing Joke, with the sounds and the floor time and also strange backward beats and all that. While writing the album as soon as we were allowed to, we started doing online shows where we would revisit “Dimension Hatross” and “Nothing Face” and I think that it might have influenced the writing of this as well because we have to sort of learning these albums again, and it was a lot of work. Also in June of last year, when we finally started recording, because of all the circumstances, we were not 100 percent prepared and we had to deliver it to the masters at the end of September.
We were like doing everything all at once, writing, recording, mixing everything. It was while we were doing that, we were playing festivals in the province of Quebec on the weekend, so it was a very intense summer. That was a bit of a difference where we didn't have many rehearsals before going into the studio. We went into the studio and had to really rush everything because we were trying to stick together snippets of songs. It was a completely different process, but we learned a lot and it's going to be very helpful for the next album. I think that the formula that we found to move forward will allow us to release albums quicker.
MiM - So you try to approach and make the most positive part of the lockdown.
Voivod - Yes, definitely. We are lucky that we can use the technology to do so these days, and so not only for the demo in the album but also the fact that we were able to do what we called the Hypercube Sessions. The online shows really helped, and if we can't tour again for a while because of the only current or whatever we will go back to maybe doing online shows where we can revisit “Outer Limits” or the new album. This year is the 30th anniversary of “Killing technology”, so we might play this album. We'll see.
MiM - The members of the band, are still living in Quebec?
Voivod - Yes, we are all living in the province of Quebec. I'm the only one living in Montreal right now. But everybody is fairly close outside the island.
MiM - Tell me, because I am almost sure, but maybe not, that are you the only member who was in the band since the very beginning?
Voivod - Yes. Well, we consider Voivod to have been formed on January 7th, 1983, and then and I was there all the way through ever since.
MiM - I think that Voivod really fits all that you want as a musician after 40 years?
Voivod - Well, we're very lucky that we have a loyal following, people that buy the CD’s and come to the shows year after year, we have old friends and new friends, but we don't take it for granted, that's why we keep working and working and trying to release more material every year as possible. I'm on my end, I'm lucky because I'm a graphic artist and I can also whenever I'm not recording or touring or doing articles on Voivod I can do art on my own at home for other bands or a commissioned ink work or anything.
During the pandemic started an online store (www.awayartpress.com ) to make my art publications available, so I'm very busy as an independent artist, which is great because many of my friends had to split their band or find another line of work or so on. I'm very lucky because for a while in the 90s, Voivod had a very low profile and I was afraid I would become like a forgotten artist. But it's the other way around where Voivod is gaining in popularity, so I'm even more in demand these days as a graphic artist than ever, so at least I can rely on that, I'm sure for the remaining of my life.
MiM - When I listen to the music of Voivod, I always thought that you were like a family because the music is so complicated. Only a person who knows the other person who is playing can do this. So imagine, I imagine in a bigger stage where maybe you are in the middle. The bass player is 20 meters there and then, how can you stop at the same time, start again and do all the changes? I think that at this moment you are like a family. Tell me, did you adopt Francis Barron, the producer, as part of the family?
Voivod - Oh, yeah, he's definitely part of the team and that is working with us as well to find the perfect, Voivod sound. He is a metal guy and he's been a very Voivod fan forever. He was part of the gang with Rocky and Chewy. We are working with him on fine-tuning our sound and from “Post Society” to “Synchro Anarchy” there's a big difference. We read all good and he's buying a lot of gear to make it happen as well. We are still doing the Hypercube Sessions at his studio. It's definitely part of the family for sure.MiM - Voivod is like part of you because I think that if you are merry, maybe you have more time with Voivod than with your couple.
Voivod – (laughs) I have dedicated thirty-nine years all of my life to whatever working daily on it, not to mention that I created the character in the 70s because I wanted to do comics books. I've been connected to it forever, and I just think that it will never end. It's been a real rollercoaster ride where at times people were telling me that I was crazy to keep going, but in the end, I'm not giving up speed off where now we are really respected band.
MiM - When you were releasing masterpieces like “Killing Technology” or “Dimension Hatross”, did you imagine the global situation nowadays? The chaos, the anarchy, the destruction, the killing technology?
Voivod - Well, it's a mixture of all. Being amazed by how quickly it happened. Now we have artificial intelligence mixed with high-tech weaponry and all that, so it's really scary. Of course, the nuclear war scenario is back to the front line and people are slowly trying to evade this world with virtual worlds. Back then, second life, now the metaverse, and of course, the pandemic and the environmental disaster and all of that. Climate change is so it's just that I personally did see it coming, but I was thinking maybe, maybe in the range of 2050, very quickly. It's right now at an accelerating pace and must be really scary for young people. I mean, if we can't predict what's going to happen 20 or 25 years down the road, imagine for at least the newer generations. I'm not surprised that they would try to live in a virtual world instead of the real one in a way.
MiM - Taking into account what you told me at the beginning of the interview, maybe this year we won't see Voivod in Europe, maybe next year.
Voivod - At this point, the spring tour in Europe has been postponed to the fall. If things die down a little and we people start doing again, we might see you in a venue this fall.
