"Nos SENTIMOS como una banda real"
El tecladista Morten Sandager ha tenido una carrera ascendente. después de haber terminado con Mercenary, entro en Pretty Maids y actualmente forma parte, además, de la banda de Ronnie Atkins y de At the Movies. ¡Disfruta de la entrevista!

MiM - Hola, mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con Morten Sandager, tecladista de Ronnie Atkins y At The Movies. ¡Hola, Morten! ¿Cómo estás? Gracias por aceptar chatear con Made in Metal. Para empezar, haciendo un poco de historia y echando la vista atrás, cuéntame ¿cuáles fueron tus primeros pasos en la música? ¿Y por qué te decidiste por el teclado?
MS - Hola Raúl, ¡estoy genial gracias! Espero que lo estés pasando muy bien también en Made in Metal, y gracias por tenerme aquí por un breve momento. Originalmente soy un baterista, lo sigo siendo, y en realidad me eduqué como baterista en el Conservatorio de Música, por lo que es una especie de doble personalidad.
Como regla principal: la batería casi siempre ha estado en conexión con la música rock/pop y los teclados siempre han estado en el metal/thrash, etc. Así que es una constelación de Bella/Bestia. Además, mi mundo de batería solo ha sido a “nivel local”, mientras, como sabéis, los teclados me han llevado por todo el mundo. ¡A veces las cosas resultan divertidas…!
Casi he tocado el piano tanto como la batería, pero mi primer interés real en las teclas de metal (y la grabación) fue en 1994 después de descubrir Dream Theater. Me pidieron que hiciera los teclados en una grabación de demostración para una banda llamada "Mene Tekel" - La demostración se llamaba "Claiming Godhood" y fue una verdadera revelación para mí...
Más tarde, en 1997, me involucré con Behind The Curtain, un metal muy progresivo (firmado con Ken Golden en The Laser's Edge/Sensory en los EE. UU.). Luego vino Mercenary durante un largo período y finalmente la transición a Pretty Maids.
Puedes decir que una banda fue la razón por la que me involucré con la siguiente y así sucesivamente. Después de Pretty Maids, el cambio a Ronnie Atkins fue natural y también At the Movies y otros proyectos en ebullición en este momento. También comencé a componer para películas... lo que también ha sido un sueño de toda mi vida.
MiM - Comencemos hablando de trabajar en las filas de Pretty Maids. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Cómo fue trabajar con la banda? ¿Cómo es tu relación actual con los miembros de la banda?
MS - Recuerdo muy bien el primer ensayo en 2006... ¡Era jodidamente alto! Era exactamente como se debe sentir tocar metal... Podía sentirlo hasta los huesos. ¡Muy genial! Lo disfruté mucho.
Hay tantos recuerdos geniales y divertidos con Pretty Maids, que no puedo comenzar a contar uno, pero casi me muero de risa tantas veces. También creé algo de mi mejor música con esa banda. Por supuesto, no nos vemos mucho ahora, también debido a la pandemia, pero aún vemos y hablamos con Ronnie a menudo. Muchos de nosotros nos reunimos recientemente para inaugurar una exposición en la ciudad natal de Pretty Maids, Horsens; en el museo organizan una exposición de Pretty Maids hasta después del verano.
MiM - Fuiste parte de la banda Mercenary desde 2002 junto con tu hermano Mikkel. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Por qué decidiste junto con tu hermano dejar la banda? ¿Qué álbum te sigue gustando de la época en que estabas en Mercenary?
MS - El tiempo con Mercenary fue la primera experiencia "real" de una banda profesional de grabación/gira para mí. Aprendí muchas cosas sobre grabar, hacer giras, hablar con la gente en ese período, y supongo que me preparó para el siguiente paso. Un sentimiento de "familia" muy cercano era el de Mercenary, y pudimos hacer una gira con algunas bandas geniales como Evergrey, The Haunted, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, King Diamond, etc. En realidad, fue después de abrir para King Diamond que su técnico de sonido " Nakke” le dio mi nombre y número a Ken Hammer. También hizo el sonido FOH para Pretty Maids.
¡Pero Mercenary se separó por diferentes objetivos! La mitad de la banda quería ir más rápido y más thrash y la otra mitad quería más melodía/sinfonía. Era lo correcto en ese momento, y en Mercenary pude pulir mi estilo de teclado y desarrollar mi estilo y habilidades de escritura de melodías que ha seguido desde entonces. Me encantan todos los álbumes que hicimos juntos, ya que cada uno representa diferentes momentos/estados de ánimo/cosas personales, ¡pero supongo que mi álbum favorito sería “The Hours That Remain”!
MiM - El año pasado formaste parte del álbum en solitario de Ronnie Atkins titulado “One Shot”. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del disco?
MS – Bueno, primero, este fue el que grabó después del descanso de Pretty Maids y su diagnóstico, aparte de la aparición como invitado en “We Don’t Need Another Hero” con At The Movies. Así que, naturalmente, ¡hubo muchas emociones en este álbum! Eligió trabajar con At The Movies como músico de acompañamiento para el álbum y, por supuesto, estoy muy feliz de que me quisiera en él como tecladista/pianista. La grabación se hizo prácticamente como muchas otras cosas durante el encierro: batería y voz grabadas en los estudios de Jacob Hansen. El resto se grabó por separado en casa y luego se envió a Chris Laney para mezclar. Luego, finalmente envió a Jacob nuevamente para hacer los toques finales. ¡Ronnie y yo hicimos un video el fin de semana pasado para el próximo sencillo que saldrá en un par de semanas!
MiM - At the Movies. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear este proyecto?
MS - Esa fue totalmente idea de Chris Laney... Ese tipo siempre está en movimiento y haciendo 100 cosas al mismo tiempo, así que cuando estábamos encerrados, se estaba volviendo loco NO haciendo nada, solo sentado y viendo películas en casa. Entonces, tuvo la increíble idea de hacer versiones de rock/metal de todas las grandes canciones de los 80 que tanto amamos. Se puso en contacto con Allan Sorensen y conmigo y nos preguntó si queríamos participar, luego rápidamente reunió al resto de la pandilla. En realidad, estábamos destinados a cambiar los miembros de la banda en cada canción, solo con nosotros como su núcleo, pero después de la primera canción nos dimos cuenta de que ya teníamos la mejor banda posible y la bola de nieve comenzó a rodar...
MiM - ¿At the Movies es un proyecto efímero o se está consolidando como banda?
MS - Bueno, definitivamente nos SENTIMOS como una banda real, aunque nunca hemos estado en la misma habitación los siete al mismo tiempo todavía. Creo que va a ser una pesadilla logística reunir a Speed y Pontus Norgren en un escenario jaja... pero QUEREMOS salir y tocar con él y SÍ tuvimos algunas ofertas de festivales, ¡así que veamos qué nos depara el futuro! Ahora también tenemos un sello discográfico y un manager para ayudarnos ;-)
MiM - Ya han lanzado dos excelentes volúmenes de bandas sonoras de películas de los años 80 y 90. Ahora bien, ¿cuál sería el próximo disco a grabar?
MS - Ya estamos trabajando en algo, ¡pero creo que es mejor no desvelar nada! :-)
MiM – “The Soundtrack of your Life Vol.1” con éxitos de películas de los 80 suena increíble. ¿Quién fue su productor? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación?
MS- ¡Muchas gracias! - Es Chris Laney quien hace la mezcla, lo cual hace MUY bien, ¡estoy de acuerdo! Todo se graba en nuestros estudios separados y se envía a Chris, y luego él lo junta todo. El flujo de trabajo es este:
Chris envía una demostración a Allan, Pontus Egberg y a mí. Reemplazamos la batería y el bajo del demo, agregamos el teclado y se lo enviamos a Chris. Luego lo envía a Pontus Norgren para solos y guitarras adicionales. Luego se lo envía a los cantantes, ¡y finalmente lo mezcla todo!
¡Imagina ese proceso CADA semana durante 12 semanas seguidas + Video! ERA un trabajo de tiempo completo durante el encierro ja, ja!
El dogma de At The Movies es este:
1: La canción DEBE estar en una película (primer disco en películas de los 80 – segundo disco en películas de los 90)
2: Mantenemos la forma y clave de la canción original
MiM - ¿Quiénes son los músicos que crees que te han influenciado en tu carrera?
MS - Al principio: Toto, Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, ABBA
Más tarde: ¡QUEEN! Dream Theater, Symphony X
No puedo nombrar a todos aquí, pero yo era un niño de los años 80, por lo que, por supuesto, había 1000 estrellas del pop/rock en mi walkman todo el tiempo, incluidas Madonna, Erasure, Michael Jackson, Rick Astley, etc. claro que la banda sonora de “Top Gun” jajaja!
MiM - ¿Cómo fue grabar en medio de la pandemia y el confinamiento?
MS - Como escribí antes, fue muy agradable tener algo por lo que levantarse todos los días. Tenía un cronograma apretado para que sucediera todas las semanas, así que me encantó el proceso. (Tuvimos que ralentizar el proceso de la segunda temporada, por lo que los lanzamientos fueron cada dos semanas, porque la vida cotidiana estaba regresando y no teníamos tiempo para que sucediera todas las semanas)
MiM - ¿Qué bandas me recomendarías escuchar?
MS - ¡Esa es una pregunta muy difícil! Si debo recomendar algo danés que me ha influenciado, debo decir el álbum de la banda "Carpark North", "Grateful" de 2008 - ¡Uno de los mejores álbumes daneses de todos los tiempos!
MiM - ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos este año?
MS - Eso sigue siendo un secreto por ahora jeje...
MiM - Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

The keyboard player Morten Sandagerhas had a brillian carrer. After finishing the Mercenary period, he gets in Pretty Maids and at this moment he is part of Ronnie Atkins Band and At the Movies. Enjoy the interview!
MiM - Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with Morten Sandager, keyboardist for Ronnie Atkins and At The Movies. Hi Morten! How are you? Thank you for agreeing to chat with Made in Metal. To start by doing a bit of history and looking back, tell me what your first steps in music were? And why did you decide on the keyboard?
MS - Hi Raúl, I’m great thanks! Hope you’re doing great also at Made in Metal, and thanks for having me here for a brief moment. I’m originally a drummer, I still am, and actually educated as a drummer from the Music Conservatory, so it’s kind of a split personality. As a main rule: Drums have almost always been in connection with rock/pop music and keyboards have always been in metal/thrash etc…So a Beauty/Beast constellation. In addition, my drum-world has only been on a “local level”, where, as you know, keyboards have taken me all around the world. Sometimes things work out funny…!
I’ve almost played the piano as long as drums, but my first real interest in metal-keys (and recording) was back in 1994 after discovering Dream Theater. I was asked to do keyboards on a demo-recording for a band called “Mene Tekel” - Demo was called “Claiming Godhood” and was a real eye-opener for me… Later in 1997, I got involved with Behind The Curtain - very prog metal (signed with Ken Golden at The Laser’s Edge/Sensory in the USA) Then along came Mercenary for a long period, and then finally the transition to Pretty Maids.
You can say that one band was the reason for me getting involved with the next and so on. After Pretty Maids - the shift to Ronnie Atkins solo was natural and also At the Movies and other projects boiling right now! I just started scoring for movies also…which has been a lifelong dream for me as well.
MiM - Let's start by talking about working in the ranks of Pretty Maids. What memories do you have of those times? How was working with the band? How is your current relationship with the members of the band?
MS - I remember the very first rehearsal in 2006 very well… It was So Dawn Loud! It was exactly how it should feel to play metal…I could feel it to the bones. Very cool! Enjoyed it very much.
There are so many great and fun memories with Pretty Maids, that I can’t begin to tell one, but I nearly died laughing so many times. Also created some of my best music ever with that band. Of course, we don’t see much of each other now, also because of the pandemic, but still, see and talk to Ronnie often. Many of us were gathered recently opening an exhibition at Pretty Maids hometown Horsens - at the museum, they run a Pretty Maids exhibition until after summer.
MiM - You were part of the Mercenary band from 2002 along with your brother Mikkel. What memories do you have of those times? Why did you decide together with your brother to leave the band? What album do you still like from the period you were in the band?
MS - The time with Mercenary was the first “real” experience of a professional recording/touring band for me. I’ve learned so many things about recording, touring, talking to people in that period, and it kind of prepared me for the next step I guess. A very close “family” feeling I to Mercenary, and we got to tour with some great bands like Evergrey, The Haunted, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, King Diamond, and so on… It was actually after opening for King Diamond that his sound-guy “Nakke” gave my name and number to Ken Hammer. He also made the FOH sound for Pretty Maids.
But Mercenary split because of different goals! Half the band wanted to go faster and more thrash and the other half wanted more melody/symphonic. It was the right thing to do at that moment, and in Mercenary I got to polish my keyboard style and develop my melody-writing style and skills that have followed ever since.
I love all the albums we did together, as they each represent different times/moods/personal stuff, but I guess my favorite album would be “The Hours That Remain”!
MiM - Last year you were part of the Ronnie Atkins solo album entitled “One Shot”. What can you tell me about it? How was the process of recording and musical production of the album?
MS – Well, first, this was the first he recorded after the Pretty Maids break and his diagnosis, apart from the guest appearance on “We Don’t Need Another Hero” with At The Movies.
So naturally, there were many emotions coming out on this album! He chose to work with At The Movies as the backing band for the album, and I am of course very happy that he wanted me on it as a keyboard/piano player. The recording was pretty much done as so much else during the lockdown: Drums and Vocals recorded at Jacob Hansen Studios. The rest was recorded separately at home and then sent to Chris Laney to mix. Then finally sent to Jacob again to do the final touches. Ronnie and I actually just did some video last weekend for the next single coming out in a couple of weeks!
MiM - At The Movies. How did the idea of creating this project come about?
MS - That was totally Chris Laney´s idea… That guy is always on the move and doing 100 things at the same time, so when we were locked down, he was going crazy NOT doing anything, just sitting and watching movies at home. So, he got the amazing idea of doing rock/metal covers of all the great 80s songs we all love so much. He got in touch with Allan and me and asked if we wanted in on it - then he quickly gathered the rest of the gang. Actually, we were meant to change band members on every song, just with us as their core, but after the first song, we realized, that we already had the best band possible and the snowball started rolling…
MiM - Is At the Movies an ephemeral project or it’s consolidating as a band?
MS - Well - We definitely FEEL like a real band - even though we’ve never been in the same room all seven of us at the same time yet. I think it’s going to be a logistic nightmare to get both Speed and Pontus Norgren together on a stage haha… but we WANT to go out and play with it and we DID have some offers from festivals, so let’s see what the future brings! Now we also got a record label and a manager to help us out ;-)
MiM - They have already released two excellent soundtrack volumes of movies from the 80s and 90s. Now, what would be the next album to record?
MS - We’re already working on something, but I think it´s best not to reveal anything! :-)
MiM - The Soundtrack of Your Life - Vol.1 Album with 80's movie hits sounds amazing. Who was its producer? How was the recording process?
MS - Thanks a lot! - It’s Chris Laney who does the mix, which he does REALLY well I agree! Everything is recorded at our separate studios and sent to Chris, and then he puts it all together. The working flow is this:
Chris sends a demo to Allan, Pontus Egberg, and me. We replace the demo drums and bass and add keyboards and send it back to Chris. He then sends to Pontus Norgren for solos and additional guitars. Then sends it to the singers - and finally mixes it all!
Just imagine that process EVERY week for 12 weeks straight + Video! It WAS a full-time job during the lockdown ha, ha!
The Dogma of At The Movies is this:
1: The song MUST be in a movie (s1 80s movie - s2 90s movie)
2: We keep the form and key of the original song
MiM - Who are the musicians that you think have influenced you in your career?
MS - Early on: Toto, Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, ABBA
Later on: QUEEN! Dream Theater, Symphony X,
I can’t name it all here, but I was totally a child of the 80s, so of course, there were 1000 pop/rock stars in my walkman all the time including Madonna, Erasure, Michael Jackson, Rick Astley, and so on…AND of course the “Top Gun” soundtrack hahaha!
MiM - How was recording in the midst of the pandemic and confinement?
MS - As I wrote before, it was very nice to have actually something to get up for every day. It was a tight schedule to make it happen every week, so I loved the process. (We did have to slow down the process of season two2 - so the releases were every two weeks instead - because everyday life was returning, and we didn’t have time to make it happen every week)
MiM - What bands would you recommend me to listen to?
MS - That’s a real hard question! If I should recommend anything Danish that has influenced me, I must say the band “Carpark North”, album: “Grateful” from 2008 - One of the best Danish albums ever!
MiM - Tour project or concerts this year?
MS - That’s still a secret for now hehe…
