"Recibimos toneladas de críticas increíbles sobre nuestro álbum"

Raúl Cardona se encuentra con el batería Lars Borup, quien como miembro fundador, nos hace una historia bastante completa sobre la banda de Power Metal, Seven Thorns.
MiM - ¡Hola Lars! ¿Cómo estás?
Lars: Hola Raúl. Estoy muy bien, pero estaría perfecto si no fuera por el Coronavirus, que hace que sea casi imposible salir a tocar.
MiM - Haciendo un poco de historia y mirando hacia atrás. Cuéntame ¿cómo fueron esos inicios cuando en el lejano 1998 decidiste fundar la banda?
Lars: Fue hace mucho tiempo. Era muy difícil encontrar gente interesada en tocar power metal. Busqué y publiqué en revistas y tiendas de música en Copenhague (Internet no era tan amplio en ese entonces) durante casi dos años y cuando no pasó nada, decidí unirme a una banda de hard rock mientras al mismo tiempo seguía buscando gente con la que empezar Seven Thorns.
En 2002 encontré a Jesper “el Monje”. Compartimos la misma visión musical y decidimos continuar la búsqueda de más integrantes juntos. Recibimos más comentarios en ese momento y cuando Mik se presentó para la audición de vocalista sabíamos que teníamos un nuevo compositor y un nuevo cantante en la banda. Con Mik a bordo, el proceso de escribir material nuevo se aceleró ya que llegó con muchas ideas.
Encontramos un teclista que se quedó con nosotros durante un año. En ese momento perdimos nuestro estudio de ensayo y Mik también se tomó un descanso hasta que encontramos más gente para la banda. The Monk y yo continuamos tocando y trabajando juntos para formar un grupo. Durante un período muy corto ensayamos como baterista y guitarrista de Iron Fire, la gran banda danesa de Power Metal en ese momento, pero descubrimos que queríamos construir nuestra propia formación desde el principio.
En 2004, finalmente tuvimos nuestro propio nuevo estudio de ensayo y allí era mucho más fácil hacer audiciones. Tuvimos muchas audiciones y, finalmente, encontramos a Tommy Strauss, que fue el ex guitarrista principal de la banda danesa de speed metal Evil (desde principios de los 80). Se unió al bajo y poco después convencimos a Mik para que volviera a unirse a la banda, y así lo hizo.
En ese momento teníamos suficiente material para un show de 45 minutos. Creo que la primera canción que terminamos juntos fue "Artificial Night", que Mik había escrito y compuesto. Todavía estábamos buscando un teclista y un guitarrista adicional. Muchas audiciones después (los que tocáis en una banda conocéis este proceso y lo tedioso que puede ser) encontramos un segundo guitarrista y un teclista (se conocían). Mirad…!
Por primera vez teníamos la formación completa en su lugar y no pasó mucho tiempo antes de que se hiciera un set y tocamos nuestro primer show en una de las escuelas locales. Fue realmente increíble. Recuerdo que se presentaron 80 personas y también estaba la televisora local (vía rápida a las estrellas (jajaja)). Ahora era el momento de ir a un estudio y grabar algo. El primer sencillo de Seven Thorns iba a ser "Artificial Night" con "Metal Will Show You the Way" como segunda canción. Dato curioso: las dos canciones del sencillo duran exactamente 7:39; sinceramente, no estaba planeado.
MiM - ¿Cómo surgió la idea y por qué la decisión de cambiar el nombre de la banda a 7thorns?
Lars: Después de las grabaciones del sencillo "Artificial Night" en 2005, Mik decidió tomarse un descanso de la banda porque había algunos problemas con algunas personas y necesitaba alejarse del "circo". Entonces, mientras Mik estaba "de vacaciones", reagrupé la banda, pero decidí cambiarle el nombre porque Mik no formaba parte de ella. Así que mi proyecto se llamó '7thorns'. 7thorns grabó un álbum que nunca se lanzó debido a desacuerdos con algunos de los miembros que intentaron secuestrar el proyecto. Fueron expulsados y todo el proyecto se detuvo en 2006.
Después de unas semanas de vacaciones, hablé nuevamente con Mik sobre despertar a Seven Thorns para que volviera a vivir, y lo hicimos. Los Seven Thorns que somos hoy nacieron de las cenizas de desastres pasados... Con un plan mucho más detallado y centrado en cómo conseguir a las personas adecuadas en la banda y cómo seguir adelante. Rápidamente nos pusimos en contacto con Gabriel (nuestro guitarrista actual) a través de un amigo en común. Gabriel era un niño en ese momento, todavía un adolescente, pero con mucho talento y habilidades. Es uno de los guitarristas más subestimados del metal.
Gabriel había asistido a clases de guitarra con otro niño (de la misma edad que él): Christian. Y ahora teníamos los cimientos sobre los que construir. Estos dos magos de la guitarra trabajaron muy bien junto con Mik, y el proceso de escritura avanzó rápidamente. No queríamos esperar a un bajista o un tecladista: el plan era seguir adelante y, si lo necesitábamos, contratar a los músicos que faltaban para tocar en el estudio y en vivo. Todavía pusimos anuncios para las posiciones que faltaban en la banda (todavía era en el momento en que los grupos de Facebook no existían). Un día recibimos una llamada de Nicolai que tocaba el bajo y quería unirse a Seven Thorns. Nicolai es una persona fantástica con una mente tan enferma y retorcida como el resto de nosotros, así que encajaba perfectamente en la banda.
En 2009 Durante la grabación de nuestro primer álbum 'Return to the Past', Gabriel estaba asistiendo a estudios de música en la Universidad de Copenhague. Un día conoció a este tipo, Asger, que amaba Stratovarius y, lo que es más importante, tocaba el piano y el teclado. Fue presentado a la banda y rápidamente fue recibido como el nuevo teclista de Seven Thorns. Estábamos en medio de las grabaciones cuando se unió, por lo que solo toca la mitad de las canciones del álbum. MiM - El álbum debut de la banda titulado “Return to the Past” (Nightmare Records, 2011) tuvo un impacto positivo en los medios especializados y público en general. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre él? ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos?
Lars: Recuerdo que todos estuvimos en el estudio todos los días durante diez horas. Fue una muy buena manera de reunir a la nueva formación (aburrirse diez horas al día juntos durante dos semanas hace que la gente haga cosas divertidas...). Mik había decidido que no cantaría en el álbum; no sentía que pudiera hacer justicia a las canciones, así que contratamos a un cantante sueco (el primero de muchos cantantes suecos con los que hemos trabajado). Erik Blomqvist fue el cantante de la banda sueca Platitude.
Esta banda ya no estaba activa por lo que estaba disponible en el mercado. Lo llevamos a Copenhague después de que se grabaron todos los instrumentos y tuvo tiempo de ensayar todas las canciones. Si no recuerdo mal, hizo todo en dos días: voz principal, coros armónicos, gritos... todo, y también agregó su propio toque a las partes vocales. Es uno de los músicos más talentosos y talentosos con los que he trabajado. Nos dio exactamente lo que estábamos buscando.
Firmamos con el sello estadounidense Nightmare Records (un consejo para otras bandas prometedoras: ¡no hagan eso!). El trato nos costó mucho dinero y no nos pagaron, y muchos discos desaparecieron “misteriosamente”. Lo bueno fue que también firmamos un contrato de promoción con nuestro buen amigo Axel Wiesenauer de Rock N Growl. Recibimos toneladas de críticas increíbles sobre nuestro álbum y abrió la puerta a Red Lion Music, que se convirtió en nuestra agencia de contratación. Nos contrataron para un nuevo festival en el sur de Alemania llamado Winestock Festival. Abrimos el festival y después de nuestro espectáculo, el director del festival se acercó a nosotros y nos dijo que simplemente éramos demasiado buenos para abrir el festival, por lo que quería que fuéramos cabezas de cartel el próximo año. Así lo hicimos... y al año siguiente otra vez. Fantástica manera de tocar en el primer concierto fuera de Dinamarca.Poco después nos contrataron para apoyar a Circle II Circle en su gira europea de verano. Para los primeros shows, Nicolai no pudo acompañarnos, así que contacté a un VIEJO amigo, Mads, con quien toqué en los años 90, y le pregunté si estaba listo para algunos shows con Zak Stevens (sabía que era un gran fanático de Savatage). – mordió el anzuelo. Pero nunca antes había tocado power metal.
Cuatro semanas después estaba listo y nos dirigimos a Alemania para apoyar a Zak Stevens y Circle II Circle. ¡Eso estuvo genial! Queríamos más, mucho más. Entonces, después de eso, hicimos giras y apoyamos a bandas como Lilian Axe, Raven, Artillery, Freedom Call, Wintersun, Seventh Wonder, Blitzkrieg, Primal Fear, Helstar y muchas más. Una cosa de la que estoy muy orgulloso es que tocamos con Oliver-Dawson Saxon. Soy un fan de MEGA Saxon y tenía pósters, álbumes y todo tipo de merchandising de Saxon, así que compartir una sala detrás del escenario con ellos y tocar en el mismo escenario fue jodidamente increíble.
MiM – “Symphony of Shadows” (Mighty Music, 2018) es un viaje épico con pasajes sinfónicos, con un sonido espectacular con cierta influencia del Metal Progresivo. ¿En qué estudio de grabación se llevó a cabo? ¿Quién fue su productor?Lars: Después de haber grabado los dos primeros álbumes en Copenhague, decidimos que queríamos conseguir un sonido más METAL en las canciones. Entonces contactamos a Tue Madsen (Babymetal, Behemoth, Moonspell…) a quien conocí por primera vez en el backstage de Wacken en 2012 después de beber grandes cantidades de Jack Daniels con los chicos de Testament. Así que cinco años más tarde estoy conduciendo a Antfarm Studio en Aarhus, Jutlandia (la parte de Dinamarca que está conectada con Alemania) para grabar el primer sencillo de lo que se convertiría en “Symphony of Shadows”. Me colocaron en la caja de tambores, que era una piscina cubierta vacía. Tue es increíble para trabajar. Es tranquilo y trabaja rápido con la edición (no es que necesitara editar las pistas perfectas que grabé, jajaja, ojalá). Con Tue mezclando y masterizando el álbum obtuvimos el sonido más metalero que estábamos buscando.
MiM - ¿Cómo fue el proceso de escribir la música? ¿Es un proceso colectivo o solo le toca a uno de los músicos?
Lars: Las canciones de “Symphony of Shadows” fueron compuestas por Gabriel y él presenta las ideas en nuestro estudio de ensayo y todos agregamos nuestros toques a las canciones y, al final, la canción es un producto de nuestro aporte combinado.
MiM - Han pasado cuatro años desde el último disco de la banda. ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?
Lars: Estamos trabajando en las dos últimas canciones para el próximo álbum. Ya he grabado la batería para las primeras cinco canciones (de nuevo con Tue Madsen). Lo más probable es que presentemos una de las nuevas canciones en nuestra próxima gira con Serious Black, ¡así que ven y échale un vistazo!
MiM - ¿Cuáles son tus referencias más directas como baterista?
Lars: Creo que los primeros bateristas de los que me hice fan fueron Ingo Schwichtenberg (RIP) de Helloween, Stefan Kaufmann de Accept y Louie Clemente de Testament. Hubo muchos otros, pero estos tres tienen un gran lugar en mi corazón en cuanto a tambores.
MiM - ¿Gira o proyecto de concierto este año?
Lars: ¡Sí! Nos uniremos a Serious Black en su gira en febrero. La gira se ha modificado del plan original, por lo que esta vez solo tocaremos en Alemania. COVID-19… Y estamos, por cuarta vez, en el line-up del festival Rock Das Ding en Balge, Alemania. ¡Gran festival! Estamos planeando muchos más shows, pero como para todas las demás bandas, las restricciones hacen que sea muy difícil organizarlos.
MiM - Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Raúl Cardona meets the drummerLars Borup, who as a founding member, tells us a complete history of his Power Metal band, Seven Thorns.
MiM - Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with Lars Borup, drummer of the Power Metal band Seven Thorns. Hi Lars! How are you?
Lars: Hi Raúl. Happy New Year! I am doing great, but I would be doing perfectly if it wasn’t for corona making it almost impossible to come out and play.
MiM - Doing a bit of history and looking back. Tell me how were those beginnings when in the distant 1998 you decided to found the band?
Lars: It is a long time ago. It was really hard to find people who were interested in playing power metal. I searched and posted in the magazines and music shops in Copenhagen (the internet wasn’t that wide-ranging back then) for almost two years and when nothing happened I decided to join a hard rock band while at the same time continuing to look for people to start Seven Thorns with.
So in 2002, I found Jesper “the Monk”. We shared the same musical vision and we decided to continue the search for more members together. We got more feedback at that point and when Mik showed up for the vocalist audition we knew that we know had a new composer as well as a singer in the band. With Mik on board, the process of writing new material was speeded up as he came up with a lot of ideas.
We found a keyboard player who stayed with us for a year. At that point, we lost our rehearsal studio and Mik also took a break until we found more people for the band. The Monk and I continued to play and work together on getting a band together. We had a very short period when we rehearsed as drummer and guitarist for Iron Fire – the big Danish Power Metal band at the time, but we found that we wanted to build our own band from the start.
In 2004 we finally got our own, new rehearsal studio and it was now much easier to do auditions. We had a lot of auditions and eventually we found Tommy Strauss who was the former lead guitarist of the Danish speed metal band Evil (from early in the 80s). He joined on bass and soon after we convinced Mik to re-join the band – and he did.
At that point, we had material enough for a 45 minutes show. I think that the first song we actually finished together was “Artificial Night” which Mik had written and composed. We were still looking for a keyboard player and an additional guitarist. Many auditions later (those of you who play in a band know this process and how tiresome it can be) we found both a second guitarist and a keyboard player (they knew each other). Behold…!!
For the first time ever we had the full line-up in place and it didn’t take long before a set was made and we played our first show ever on one of the local schools. It was really awesome. I remember that 80 people showed up and the local TV station was there as well (fast track to the stars (hahaha)). Now it was time to go to a studio and record something. The first Seven Thorns single was going to be “Artificial Night” with “Metal Will Show You the Way” as the second song. Fun fact: Both songs on the single are exactly 7:39 long – it wasn’t planned, honestly.
MiM - How did the idea come about and why the decision to change the band's name to 7thorns?
Lars: After the recordings of the “Artificial Night” single in 2005 Mik decided to take a break from the band as there were some issues with some of the people and he needed to get away from “the circus”. So while Mik was “on vacation” I regrouped the band but decided to rename it also as Mik wasn’t part of it. So my project was called ‘7thorns’. 7thorns recorded one album that was never released due to disagreements with some of the members who tried to hijack the project. They were kicked out and the whole project was stopped in 2006.
After a few weeks’ vacations, I talked to Mik again about waking Seven Thorns to live again, and we did. The Seven Thorns we are today was born from the ashes of past disasters… With a much more detailed and focused plan on how to get the right people in the band and how to move forward. We quickly got in contact with Gabriel (our current guitarist) through a common friend. Gabriel was a young boy at that time – still a teenager – but with so much talent and skills. He is one of the most underrated guitarists in metal.
Gabriel had attended guitar lessons with another young boy (same age as himself) – Christian. And now we had the foundation to build on. These two guitar wizards worked really well together with Mik, and the writing process moved forward quickly. We didn’t want to wait for a bass player or a keyboard player – the plan was to move forward and if we needed, hire in the missing musicians to play in the studio and live. We did still put up ads for the missing positions in the band (this was still at the time when Facebook groups didn’t exist). One day we got a call from Nicolai who played bass and he wanted to join Seven Thorns. Nicolai is a fantastic person with a mind as sick and twisted as the rest of us, so he fitted perfectly in the band.
In 2009 during the recording of our first album ‘Return to the Past’ Gabriel was attending music studies at the University of Copenhagen. One day he had met this guy, Asger, who loved Stratovarius, and more important – he played piano/keyboard. He was introduced to the band and was very quickly welcomed as the new Seven Thorns keyboard player. We were in the middle of the recordings when he joined so he is only playing on half of the songs on the album. Keyboards on the other half of the album were played by the marvelous Mikkel Henderson from the Danish band Fate.
We played our first show together in a small venue outside Copenhagen and then as the second show ever for all but me we supported the mighty Jorn at his show in Copenhagen – that was so awesome…
MiM - The band's debut album entitled “Return to the Past” (Nightmare Records, 2011) had a positive impact on the specialized media and the general public. What can you tell me about him? What memories do you have of those times?
Lars: I remember that we all were in the studio every day for ten hours. It was a really good way to bring the new line-up together (being bored for ten hours a day together for two weeks makes people do funny things…). Mik had decided that he wouldn’t sing on the album – he didn’t feel that he could do the songs justice, so we hired a Swedish singer (the first of many Swedish singers we have worked with). Erik Blomqvist was the singer in the Swedish band Platitude.
This band was not active anymore so he was available on the market. We got him to Copenhagen after all the instruments were recorded and he had had time to rehearse all the songs. If I remember it correctly he did everything in two days – lead vocals, harmony vocals, screams… everything – and he added his own touch to the vocal parts as well. He is one of the most talented and gifted musicians I have ever worked with. He gave us exactly what we were looking for.
We signed with the American label Nightmare Records (word of advice to other hopeful bands: Don’t do that!). The deal cost us a lot of money and we did not get paid, and a lot of albums disappeared “mysteriously”. The good thing was that we also signed a promotion deal with our good friend Axel Wiesenauer from Rock N Growl. We got tons of awesome reviews on our album and it opened the door to Red Lion Music, who became our booking agency. They booked us for a new festival in the south of Germany called Winestock Festival. We opened the festival and after our show, the festival manager came to us and told us that we simply were too good to open the festival so he wanted us to headline the next year. So we did… and the year after again. It is a fantastic way to play the first gig ever outside Denmark.Shortly after we were booked to support Circle II Circle on their European summer tour. For the first shows, Nicolai was unable to join us so I contacted an OLD friend, Mads, whom I played with back in the 90s, and asked him if he was up for some shows with Zak Stevens (I knew he was a big Savatage fan) – he took the bait. But he had never played power metal before.
Four weeks later he was ready and we headed for Germany to support Zak Stevens and Circle II Circle. That was cool! We wanted more – much more. So after that, we have toured and supported bands like Lilian Axe, Raven, Artillery, Freedom Call, Wintersun, Seventh Wonder, Blitzkrieg, Primal Fear, Helstar, and many more. One thing that I am really proud of is that we played with Oliver-Dawson Saxon. I am a MEGA Saxon fan and had posters, albums, and all kinds of Saxon merch, so actually sharing a backstage room with them and playing on the same stage was so f**king amazing.
MiM – “Symphony of Shadows” (Mighty Music, 2018) is an epic journey with symphonic passages, with a spectacular sound with a certain influence of Progressive Metal. In which recording studio was it carried out? Who was your producer?Lars: After having recorded the first two albums in Copenhagen we decided that we wanted to get a more METAL sound on the songs. So we contacted Tue Madsen (Babymetal, Behemoth, Moonspell…) whom I met for the first time backstage at Wacken in 2012 after drinking huge amounts of Jack Daniels with the guys from Testament. So five years later I am driving to Antfarm Studio in Aarhus, Jutland (the part of Denmark that is connected with Germany) to record the first single of what would become Symphony of Shadows. I was placed in the drum box which was an empty indoor swimming pool. Tue is amazing to work with. He is calm and works quickly with editing (not that he needed to edit the perfect tracks I recorded - hahaha – I wish). With Tue mixing and mastering the album we got the more metal sound we were looking for.
MiM - How was the process of writing the music? Is it a collective process or does it only fall to one of the musicians?
Lars: The songs on “Symphony of Shadows” were composed by Gabriel and he presents the ideas in our rehearsal studio we all add our touches to the songs and in the end, the song is a product of our combined input.
MiM - It's been four years since the band's last record. When will fans be able to hear new material from the band?
Lars: We are working on the last two songs for the next album. I have recorded the drums for the first five songs already (again with Tue Madsen). We will most likely present one of the new songs on our upcoming tour with Serious Black – so come and check it out!!
MiM - What are your most direct references as a drummer?
Lars: I think the first drummers that I became a fan of were Ingo Schwichtenberg (RIP) from Helloween, Stefan Kaufmann from Accept, and Louie Clemente from Testament. There were many others but these three have a big place in my heart drum-wise.
MiM - Tour or concert project this year?
Lars: Yes! We will be joining Serious Black on their tour in February. The tour has been modified from the original plan so we will only be playing in Germany this time. Covid… And we are, for the 4th time, in the line-up for the Rock Das Ding festival in Balge, Germany. Great festival! We are planning a lot more shows but as for all other bands, the restrictions make it very difficult to arrange.
