"Esta pandemia nos ha demostrado lo importante que es ir a conciertos".
Raúl Cardona tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con otra banda de Islandia. Ahora es el momento de Volcanova, una nueva banda Stoner de la tierra del hielo y el fuego que lanzó su nuevo EP, “The Cosmic Bullshit” el pasado mes de febrero.
MiM - Hola, mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con la banda de Stoner Rock, Volcanova. ¡Hola chicos! Es un placer que haya accedido a hablar con Made in Metal, España. Para empezar me gustaría que comentaras cómo surgió la idea de formar la banda.
V - Originalmente, Sam (guitarra/voz) fundó la banda en 2014 como dúo con su amigo, que era un poco más un proyecto de metal post/experimental. Pero la formación y el concepto actuales (Sam, Dagur y Steini) se fundaron a finales de 2017. Todos éramos buenos amigos y nos habíamos conocido a través de la escena musical islandesa, donde tocábamos en diferentes bandas, a menudo en los mismos lugares y en los mismos eventos. . Los tres nos reunimos y en nuestro primer ensayo sentimos que instantáneamente hicimos clic y tocar juntos parecía correcto, escribir juntos fue, y es, emocionante y divertido.
MiM - ¿Cómo ves la escena internacional del Stoner Rock hoy en día y qué bandas recomendarías?
V - ¡La escena internacional del stoner rock siempre está en expansión! No solo por ahí, sino también en Islandia. Hay muchas grandes bandas de stoner rock que escuchamos y que nos influencian como The Sword, Elder, 1000mods, Mars Red Sky, Lowrider, Monolord, Clutch, la banda islandesa Brainpolice, Kyuss (por supuesto), Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats y tantos, muchos más!
MiM - El álbum debut de la banda “Radical Waves” (The Sign Records, 2020) dejó un excelente sabor de boca en todos los amantes del Stoner Rock. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de ese año? ¿Cómo firmaste con The Sign Records? ¿Cómo ha sido la promoción de este Álbum en medio de la pandemia y el confinamiento por el COVID?
V - Empezamos a grabar el disco en verano de 2018 y decidimos que no queríamos precipitarnos. Así que nos tomamos nuestro tiempo para encontrarnos a nosotros mismos, siendo este nuestro primer disco y realmente no teníamos "un objetivo" de cómo queríamos que fuera o sonara. Solo queríamos divertirnos y sentirnos satisfechos con el resultado. ¡Qué éramos! Los recuerdos son geniales, la pasamos bien y, por lo general, todos estaríamos en el estudio, aunque tal vez solo estuviéramos grabando el bajo, por ejemplo, ¡porque no podemos tener suficiente el uno del otro!
Sacar el álbum justo cuando Covid golpeó a la población de este planeta, fue realmente difícil para ser honesto. Sin embargo, tratamos de hacer lo mejor posible. Tocar tantos shows como podamos y vender mercancía y demás. Afortunadamente, después de meses de buscar, finalmente encontramos The Sign Records, ¡fueron tan amables de llevarnos a su familia!
MiM - El EP “Cosmic Bullshit” (The Sign Records, 2022) que saldrá el 25 de febrero tiene excelentes críticas. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto? ¿Cómo te sentiste grabando este EP? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación?
V - Este álbum es definitivamente diferente de “Radical Waves”, pero no demasiado diferente. Es más dinámico en cierto modo, donde mostramos un poco nuestro lado más suave, pero también sacamos a relucir lo más pesado que tenemos. Entramos al estudio bastante confiados, con canciones que algunas escribimos justo después de terminar de grabar “Radical Waves”.
El progreso de grabación fue mucho más corto que con “Radical Waves”. No porque tuviéramos prisa, ¡fue muy divertido! Así que seguimos adelante, haciendo sesiones de grabación más largas y frecuentes que antes. ¡No queríamos perder nuestro mojo! Terminamos de grabarlo en tres o cuatro semanas. Al principio solo queríamos lanzar dos sencillos, pero nuestro sello quería hacer un EP, lo cual fue genial porque teníamos suficiente material. ¡Nos divertimos mucho grabando "Cosmic Bullshit" y no podemos esperar a que todos lo escuchen!
MiM - La energía liberada por este disco es enorme. Seguro que será un gran éxito cuando lo escuchen los fans. Cuéntame sobre el proceso de producción musical. ¿Quién estaba a cargo?
V - Cuando grabamos, escribimos y producimos, nadie está realmente a cargo. Todos trabajamos juntos en cosas, aportamos ideas y probamos cosas. No digo que todas nuestras ideas sean buenas, ¡ni mucho menos! Pero tenemos que probarlos para saber con certeza si funcionan o no. Sam prueba diferentes guitarras, diferentes pedales y diferentes amplificadores hasta que encontramos un sonido con el que estamos satisfechos. A veces pasa lo mismo con las voces. No siempre decidimos de antemano quién cantará una canción que acabamos de escribir, así que todos tratamos de cantar y, a veces, terminamos cantando todos juntos.
MiM - Excelente trabajo en las voces. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de mezclar y grabar?
V - Nuestro querido amigo Helgi Durhuus de Stúdíó Helvíti grabó y mezcló Cosmic Bullshit, también trabajó con nosotros en Radical Waves. ¡Un tipo fantástico con un oído fantástico para la música y una cara fantástica para mirar!
MiM - ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como The Sing Records a una banda como Volcanova para consolidarse en la escena?V - The Sign Records está haciendo grandes cosas para las bandas emergentes. Puede ser bastante difícil ser una banda joven y lanzando un álbum debut. Habíamos estado buscando sellos durante algún tiempo hasta que nos aceptaron, por lo que estamos muy agradecidos, especialmente en tiempos de Covid cuando los sellos estaban teniendo dificultades (comprensiblemente) para firmar nuevas bandas. Lanzamos nuestro primer LP a través de The Sign Records, ¡y no sabemos cómo o cuándo lo hubiéramos lanzado si no fuera por ellos! El sello nos ha ayudado a promocionar nuestra música y nos ha conseguido excelentes entrevistas y reseñas en revistas como Metal Hammer y Classic Rock.
MiM - ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas en este nuevo año?
V - Se suponía que íbamos a ir ahora a fines de febrero, apoyando a nuestros amigos en The Vintage Caravan, pero se pospuso recientemente. Aunque tenemos algunos eventos y espectáculos aquí en Islandia. Vamos a tener una fiesta de lanzamiento del álbum en nuestra tienda de discos favorita llamada Lucky Records. También vamos a tener un espectáculo de lanzamiento en nuestro local/bar de rock local llamado Gaukurinn.
MiM - Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Raul Cardona has the opportunity to talk to another band from Iceland. Now it’s time for Volcanova, a new Stoner band from the land of ice and fire who released their new EP, “The Cosmic Bullshit” last February.
MiM - Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with the Stoner Rock band, Volcanova. Hi guys! It is a pleasure that you have agreed to talk with Made in Metal, Spain. To begin I would like you to comment on how the idea of forming the band came about?
V - Originally, Sam (guitar/vocal) founded the band in 2014 as a duo with his friend, which was a bit more of a post/experimental metal project. But the current lineup and concept (Sam, Dagur and Steini) were founded in late 2017. We were all good friends and had all met each other through the Icelandic music scene where we played in different bands, often at the same venues and same events. The three of us got together and on our first rehearsal as we felt that we instantly clicked and playing together seemed right, writing together was, and is, exciting and fun.
MiM - How do you see the international Stoner Rock scene today and what bands would you recommend?
V - The international stoner rock scene is always expanding! Not just out there, but in Iceland as well. There are many great stoner rock bands that we both listen to and are influenced by like The Sword, Elder, 1000mods, Mars Red Sky, Lowrider, Monolord, Clutch, the Icelandic band Brainpolice, Kyuss (of course), Uncle Acid, and the Deadbeats and so many, many more!
MiM - The debut album of the band “Radical Waves” (The Sign Records, 2020) left an excellent taste in all Stoner Rock lovers. What memories do you have of that year? How did you get signed to The Sign Records? How has the promotion of this Album been in the midst of the pandemic and confinement due to COVID?
V - We started recording the album in the summer of 2018 and we decided that we didn't want to rush anything. So we took our time to find ourselves, this being our first record and we really didn’t have ‘’a goal’’ of how we wanted it to be, or sound. We just wanted to have fun and feel satisfied with the outcome. Which we were! The memories are great, we had a good time, and we would usually all be in the studio even though we were maybe only tracking the bass for example, because we just can’t get enough of each other!
Getting the album out just as Covid hit the population of this planet, was really tough, to be honest. We tried to make the best of it though. Play as many shows as we could and make merchandise and so on. Luckily after months of looking, we finally found The Sign Records which were so nice to take us into their family!
MiM - The EP “Cosmic Bullshit” (The Sign Records, 2022) which will be out on February 25 has excellent reviews. What can you tell me about it? How did you feel about recording this EP? How was the recording process?
V - This album is definitely different from “Radical Waves”, but not too different. It’s more dynamic in a way, where we show our softer side a bit, but also bring out the heaviest we have. We entered the studio quite confident, having songs that some of which we wrote just after finishing recording Radical Waves.
The recording progress was way shorter than with Radical Waves. Not because we were in a rush, it was just so much fun! So we just kept on going, doing longer and more frequent recording sessions than before. We didn’t want to lose our mojo! We finished recording it in three or four weeks. At first, we only wanted to release two singles but our label wanted to do an EP, which was great because we had enough material. We had a lot of fun recording “Cosmic Bullshit” and we can’t wait for everybody to hear!
MiM - The energy released by this disc is enormous. It's sure to be a big hit when heard by fans. Tell me about the music production process? Who was in charge?
V - When we record, write, and produce, no one is really in charge. We all work on things together, pitch in ideas, and try things out. Not saying all of our ideas are good, far from it! But we need to try them out to know for sure if they work or not. Sam tries out different guitars, different pedals, and different amps until we find a sound we are satisfied with. Sometimes the same goes with the vocals. We don’t always decide in advance who will sing a song we just wrote so we just all try singing, and sometimes end up all singing the song together!
MiM - Excellent job on the voices. Who was in charge of mixing and recording?
V - Our dear friend Helgi Durhuus of Stúdíó Helvíti recorded and mixed "Cosmic Bullshit", he also worked with us on "Radical Waves". Fantastic guy with a fantastic ear for music and a fantastic face for looking at!
MiM - What can a record label like The Sing Records offer to a band like Volcanova to establish them on the scene?
V - The Sign Records are doing great things for up-and-coming bands. It can be quite hard being a young band and releasing a debut album. We had been label hunting for some time until they took us in, which we are really grateful for, especially at Covid times when labels were/are having difficulties (understandably) signing in new bands. We released our first LP via The Sign Records, and we don’t know how or when we would have released it if not for them! The label has helped us promote our music and got us some great interviews and reviews in magazines such as Metal Hammer and Classic Rock.
MiM - What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled in this new year?
V - We were supposed to go now at the end of February, supporting our buddies in The Vintage Caravan but it got postponed recently. Although we have some events and shows coming up here in Iceland. We are going to have an album release party at our favorite record store called Lucky Records. We are also going to have a release show at our local rock bar/venue called Gaukurinn.
MiM - Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
V - We just want to thank everybody for the support and thank you for listening to us during these tough times when we can’t come to you and play!
This pandemic has shown us how important it is to go to concerts, support your local scene, buy merchandise, listen to new music and tell your friends about new music! We are all in this together and we can’t wait to get back on the road and blast your faces with music! Our EP “Cosmic Bullshit’’ will be out on February 25th and by all means, give it a listen!
