"A partir del álbum 'Chemical Invasion', hicimos letras muy serias".
Tony González conversa con Andreas Geremia, “Guerre”, el cantante de Tankard. Su nueva recopilación, el boxset, "For A Thousand Beers" entró en las listas oficiales de álbumes alemanes en la entrada más alta de la carrera de Tankard hasta el momento, el nuevo álbum está en camino, y es momento de hablar sobre la banda, el pasado y el presente.
MiM: Hola Andreas, ¿cómo estás?
TK: Estoy bien. Muchas gracias. Estamos recién terminando con las grabaciones de nuestro nuevo disco. Y sí, el próximo fin de semana tenemos que revisar todas las voces y luego, con suerte, los micrófonos comenzarán y el álbum saldrá en septiembre. Volvemos al entretenimiento. Y sí, estamos deseando celebrar este año nuestro cuarenta cumpleaños.
MiM: Sí, pero no me digas esto. Déjame decirte que estamos aquí porque vi que, en este mes, la banda lanzó un nuevo box set llamado "For A Thousand Beers". Y ahora me dices que estás grabando un nuevo CD. Dime, ¿tienes el nombre del CD o aún no?
TK: Se llama "Pavlov’s Dog". Y la caja es lo primero que destaca este año celebrando el cuarenta cumpleaños. Y son todos los álbumes de 1986 a 1995 con un DVD, con dos shows, dos conciertos de audio y un buen libro con la caja de vinilo. Así que es el primer paso para celebrar nuestro cuarto cumpleaños este año.
MiM: Sí, vi la caja y cuando la vi por primera vez, sentí que estabas vendiendo una caja de cerveza con los CD y el DVD.
TK: (LOL) No hay cerveza adentro. Lo siento.
MiM: No hay problema, tu música es mejor que la cerveza.
TK: Muchas gracias.
MiM: Estoy bromeando, pero ahora por favor dime porque no entiendo cuál es la relación entre el perro de Pavlov y la cerveza.
TK: Sí, es como cuando la oscuridad se está diluyendo. No puedo decirte mucho sobre eso. Solo puedo decirte el título y que habrá una buena mezcla de cosas serias y divertidas. Una canción se llama "Lockdown forever" y es debido a Corona. Tal vez tengamos que quedarnos en casa por el resto de nuestras vidas y no tenemos nada más que hacer que escuchar todos nuestros discos de heavy metal desde la mañana hasta la noche. Así que esta es más una letra divertida, tratamos de hacer una buena mezcla de cosas divertidas y serias, como siempre.
MiM: Está bien, tal vez me equivoque, pero por lo que recuerdo, el perro de Pavlov es la teoría de que le das comida a un perro y haces sonar la campana y después de una semana o dos, solo haces sonar la campana y el perro viene por el comida, y no hay comida. Y ahora estaba pensando porque creo que realmente eres un bromista, y creo que tal vez el Perro de Pavlov está buscando cerveza y haces sonar la campana algo totalmente loco. Esperaremos a septiembre
TK: Sí, en primer lugar, tengo que entender la letra. (LOL) Entonces podemos hablar de ello.
MiM: Gerre, ¿todavía amas la cerveza? ¿Tienes alguna favorito?
TK: Mi cerveza favorita es la cerveza que bebemos en el backstage porque es gratis (jajaja).
MiM: Entonces pensé que después de 40 años, muchos fabricantes de cerveza estarían buscando a la banda para promocionar la cerveza.
TK: No, solo hay una cervecería española que le saca el pulso a la banda. La cerveza Tecate. Pero las grandes compañías no están interesadas en una banda como Tankard. Hay una gran teoría sobre eso, pero la cuestión es que, Tankard, que de alguna manera, a menudo se reduce a esto de la cerveza. Quiero decir, está bien, creamos nuestro tipo de imagen con la segunda demo llamada "Alcoholic Metal" y álbumes como "The Morning After" y "Chemical Invasion" y cosas así. Pero la música siempre fue seria y, a partir del álbum "Chemical invasion", también teníamos letras muy serias, pero creamos este tipo de imagen. Queríamos deshacernos de esta imagen a mediados de los 90, pero no fue así. Decaímos como banda y lo sentimos un poco porque nadie creía en nosotros. Hoy en día, hacemos muchas bromas sobre nuestro propio tipo de imagen.
MiM: Sí, y ¿podemos encontrar exactamente en "For A Thousand Beers"?
TK: Todas esas piezas que hicimos con Noise Records y el mini LP y dos cosas de audio. Hay un DVD con dos conciertos de audio. De la gira “Ugly, Fat and Live”, una grabación en vivo desde la mesa de mezclas, y luego tenemos el DVD oficial “Open All Night” y luego tenemos un DVD pirata de Eindhoven en 1987. Tengo muchos casetes viejos de VHS y una noche fui a ver a Frank, nuestro bajista. Él también está desde el principio en la banda. Tiene una vieja grabadora de video y vimos muchas cosas y lo pasamos bien y luego elegimos este concierto en Eindhoven. Fue el primer espectáculo de Tankard fuera de Alemania. TK: Sí, en el primer álbum y luego en el segundo, hicimos una versión de la canción "Alcohol" de Gangrene.
MiM: Sí. Así que ahora, después de todo este año, ¿cómo puedes definir tu propia banda, una banda de thrash o no?
TK: Sí, por supuesto, nosotros seguimos siendo una banda de thrash, por supuesto, tenemos algunas influencias del metal tradicional, pero creo que Tankard es una banda de thrash estelar y estamos muy felices y orgullosos de estar aquí después de 40 años. Todavía estoy aquí después de 40 años.
MiM: La última vez que vi a la banda fue en Leyendas del Rock aquí en España. Creo que tu relación con la gente que organiza Leyendas del Rock es muy amistosa porque recuerdo que hubo un momento en el concierto, tal vez no lo recuerdes, pero aquí en España todas las revistas hablaron de eso, de que Marco Rubio subío al escenario y bailaste con él. ¿Te acuerdas?
TK: Sí, puedo recordar. Eso fue muy divertido. Si.
MiM: E incluso cuando siempre estás cantando y hablando sobre alcohol y cerveza, estando en el escenario, no estás borracho en absoluto. Así que dime, ¿cuál es la posición de la banda en relación con esto?
TK: Quiero decir, todavía nos gusta beber cerveza, por supuesto, pero no queremos emborracharnos en el escenario porque tenemos que tocar nuestro show y nos encanta tocar ese tipo de música. Y si bebemos un poco más allá del escenario, está bien. Pero no vamos totalmente borrachos al escenario. Eso no tiene ningún sentido porque como te dije antes, la música es seria y siempre fue seria.
MiM: Sí, eso es algo que realmente aprecio. Y creo que el público lo agradece porque no voy a mencionar a nadie, pero a veces he visto un concierto y el cantante está borracho y algunas personas en la audiencia dicen: "¡Ay, qué gracioso!", como una broma. “Estaba tan borracho”. Pero Gerre, yo pago mi dinero. No pago dinero para ver a un músico borracho, pago dinero para disfrutar del espectáculo.
TK: Así es. 100 por ciento. Estoy de acuerdo.
MiM: Incluso cuando la banda tiene diecisiete discos hasta ahora y cuarenta años, todavía tienes otro trabajo. ¿En qué estás trabajando ahora?
TK: Todos tenemos trabajos regulares, soy trabajador social y trabajo con personas adictas a las drogas.
MiM: ¿Cómo puedes lidiar con tu rutina diaria y eso?
TK: Por supuesto, pasamos mucho de nuestro tiempo libre en las actividades de la banda, poniendo todo nuestro esfuerzo y tocando muchos shows los fines de semana. Sí, funciona. Por supuesto, si lo hiciéramos 100 por ciento profesional, podríamos tocar más shows. No los últimos tres años por culpa de este maldito Corona, pero somos totalmente independientes y podemos hacer lo que queramos. No tenemos que vivir de la música. Hay un lado bueno y un lado malo. El lado malo es que no podemos tocar todas las ofertas que recibimos. El lado bueno es que hacemos lo que queremos y somos totalmente independientes.
MiM: He visto a la banda, como te dije antes. Recuerdo que siempre estás feliz en el escenario. ¿Es fácil después de casi 40 años aprovechar las vacaciones para hacer giras por el mundo?
TK: Sí, nos tomamos todas las vacaciones para tocar. Por el momento, los últimos dos años, tocamos menos debido al Corona. Solo hicimos cinco shows el año pasado. En 2020 solo tres shows. Muchos espectáculos fueron pospuestos y cancelados. Así que esperamos que tal vez en la temporada de festivales de mayo / junio este año habrá algunos espectáculos. Mejorará, con suerte.
MiM: Si esta situación finalmente sucede y puedes salir y tocar de nuevo, ¿tocarás la música que está incluida en "For A Thousand Beers" y haras una lista con todas las canciones, o vas a mantener tu lista establecida?
TK: Sí, siempre cambiamos un poco nuestra lista de temas. Queremos tocar canciones de todos nuestros álbumes, por lo que no hay una lista de canciones especial para promocionar esta caja porque, de todos modos, tocamos muchas canciones de esa caja. Siempre tratamos de hacer buenas mezclas, pero cuando tienes tantos álbumes, es difícil elegir las canciones, por lo que siempre hay grandes discusiones en la banda sobre qué canciones tocamos y cuáles no.
MiM: ¿Y hay algunas canciones que siempre están en el set list?
TK: Sí. “Empty Tankard” es la canción que creo que tocamos desde el primer show. Tienen que estar "Chemical Invasion", "The Morning After" y "Zombie Attack". Así que realmente no podemos sacar estas canciones de la lista. No creo que funcione. No es fácil elegir las mejores canciones.
MiM: ¿Tienes algún concierto programado?
TK: Sí, tenemos algunos festivales en Alemania, y creo que ocurre lo mismo en España. No lo tengo en mente exactamente, porque de momento todo es totalmente confuso con los conciertos: posponer, cancelar. Espero que en abril podamos verlo mejor. ¿Qué va a pasar y qué no?
MiM: Afortunadamente, todos los músicos de Tankard tienen otro trabajo. Los músicos lo están pasando muy mal con esta situacion.
TK: Tiempos realmente difíciles, especialmente bandas tan pequeñas o tan grandes como Tankard que viven de la música. Tienen tiempos muy, muy difíciles.
MiM: Gerre, te diré que conocí a Tankard con 'Chemical Invasion' porque llegó un LP a Cuba, no sé exactamente cómo. Y a partir de este momento tu banda es seguida por los headbangers que allá en Cuba siguen tu banda. Tal vez nunca lo sepas, pero tus primeros CD y LPs fueron realmente muy bien recibidos.
TK: Genial, es bueno escuchar eso, vi en YouTube un show de Rolling Stones tocado en Cuba hace un par de años. Fue un gran festival, y sé que hay fanáticos del heavy metal en todo el mundo, y realmente nos encantaría tocar en Cuba algún día, eso sería realmente increíble.
MiM: Vamos a terminar la entrevista. Si quieres decirle algo a la afición española, a la afición cubana. ¿Este es tu momento?
TK: Sí, antes que nada, nos gustaría agradecer a los fanáticos de todo el mundo por su apoyo en los últimos 40 años sin los fans no somos nada y volveremos seguro, seguro a España, por supuesto. Y ojalá algún día a Cuba. Y lo más importante en este momento es mantenerse saludable. Y, por supuesto, mantente sediento y lo más importante, mantente pesado.

Tony Gonzalez talks to Andreas Geremia,”Guerre”, the Tankard singer. Its new compilation, "For A Thousand Beers" Boxset gets in the Official German Album Charts in the highest Chart Entry of Tankard career so far, s new album is on its way, and it’s the moment to talk about the band, the past, and the present.
MiM: Hello Andreas, How are you?
TK: I'm fine. Thanks a lot. We start just finishing with recordings for our new album. And yeah, so next weekend we got to check out all the vocals and then hopefully the mics will start and the album will be out in September. Repeat on entertainment. And yeah, we are really looking forward this year celebrating our forty birthday.
MiM: Yes, but don't tell me this. Let me tell you that we are here because I saw that in this month, the band were released new box set called for a thousand beers. And now you're telling me that you are recording a new CD. Tell me, do you have the name of the CD or not yet?
TK: It's called Pavlov's dog. And the box set is the first highlight this year celebrating the forty birthday. And it's all albums from 1986 to 1995 with a DVD, with two shows, two audio concerts and the good book with the vinyl box. So the first step is to celebrate our fourth birthday this year.
MiM: Yes, I saw the box set and when I saw it for the first time, I felt like you were selling a box of beer with the CDs and the DVD.
TK: (LOL) Now it's no beer inside. I'm sorry.
MiM: No problem, your music is better than the beer.
TK: Thank you very much.
MiM: I'm joking, but now please tell me because I don't understand what is the relation between Pavlov’s dog and the beer?
TK: Yeah, it's like when the dark it's melting something. I can’t tell you so much about that. I just can tell you the title and there will be a good mixture of serious and funny stuff. One song is called “Lockdown forever”. And that's because of Corona. Maybe we have to stay at home for the rest of our lives that we have nothing else to do than listen to all our heavy metal records from the morning until the evening. So this is more a funny lyric. And so we try to do a good mixture of funny and very serious stuff, as always.
MiM: OK, maybe I'm wrong, but as long as I remember, Pavlov’s Dog is this theory that you give food to a dog and sound the bell and after a week or two, just sound the bell and the dog comes for the food, and there is no food. And now I was thinking because I think that you are really a Joker, and I think that maybe the Pavlov’s Dog is looking for beer or drinks and you sound the bell but is totally crazy. We will wait until September
TK: Yeah, First of all, I have to understand the lyrics. (LOL) Then we can talk about it.
MiM: Gerre, do you still love the beer? Do you have a favorite one?
TK: My favorite beer is the beer we got it backstage because it's for free, (LOL).
MiM: So I thought that after 40 years, a lot of beer manufacturers are looking for a band to promote the beer.
TK: No, there's only one little Spanish brewery that they put out the pulse of the band. Some Tecate beer. But the big companies are not interested in the band like Tankard. That's a big theory about that, but the thing was, Tankard, it's somehow often just reduce on this beer thing. I mean, OK, we created our kind of image with the second demo called “Alcoholic Metal” and albums like “The Morning After” and “Chemical Invasion” and stuff like that. But the music always was serious and beginning from “Chemical invasion” album, we really had also very serious lyrics on it. So yeah, but we created this kind of image. We wanted to get rid of this image in the middle of the 90s, but it didn't. It failed it a little bit and we felt a little bit because nobody believed in us. Nowadays, we make a lot of jokes about our own kind of image.
MiM: Yes, and can we find exactly on “For a thousand beers?
TK: All that pieces we made with Noise Records and the mini-LP and two audio things. There is one DVD with two audio concerts on it. It's “Fat, Ugly and Life album. a live recording from the soundboard, and then we have the official "Open all Night" DVD, and then we have a bootleg DVD from Eindhoven in 1987. I have a lot of old VHS cassettes here. One evening I went to Frank, our bass player. He's also from the beginning here. He has the old video recorder and we watched a lot of stuff and had a good time and then we choose this show in Eindhoven. It was the first show of Tankard outside from Germany. And yeah, it's really bootleg, but it's very funny.
MiM: This box will like me a lot because, for example, my favorite Tankard song is “Alcohol”. And I remember that basically the band is always considered in the group of the thrash metal German bands. But for example, “Alcohol” is pure punk.
TK: Yes, on the first album and then on the second album, we covered the Gangrene song “Alcohol”.
MiM: Yes. So now, after all this year, how can you define your own band, a thrash band or not?
TK: Yes, of course, we are still a thrash band, of course, we have some traditional metal influences, but I think Tankard is a stellar thrash band and we are really happy and proud to be here after 40 years. Still to be here after 40 years.
MiM: The last time I saw the band was at Leyendas del Rock here in Spain. I think that your relationship with the people who organized Leyendas del Rock is very friendly because I remember that there was a moment in the concert, maybe you don't remember, but here in Spain, all the magazines speak about this, that Marco Rubio gets in the stage and you dance with him. Do you remember?
TK: Yeah, I can remember. That was very funny. Yeah.
MiM: And even when you are always singing and speaking about alcohol and beer when you are on the stage, you are not drunk at all. So tell me, what is the position of the band related to this?
TK: I mean, we still like to drink beer, of course, but we don't want to go drunk on stage because we have to play our show and we love to play that kind of music. And if we drink some beyond the stage, it's OK. But we don't go totally drunk on stage. That doesn't make any sense because as I told you before, the music is serious and was always serious.
MiM: Yes, that is something that I really appreciate. And I think that the audience will appreciate it because I´m not going to mention anyone but sometimes I have seen a concert and the singer is drunk and some people in the audience say, “Oh, is funny!”, like a joke. “He was so drunk”. But Gerre, I pay my money. I don't pay the money to see a drunk musician. I pay money to enjoy the show.
TK: That's right. 100 percent. I agree.
MiM: Even when the band has seventeen records until now and 40 years, you still get another job. What are you working on now?
TK: We all have regular jobs, I'm a social worker and I work together with drug-addicted people.
MiM: How can you deal with your daily routine and about?
TK: Of course, we spend a lot of our free time in activities of the band all putting all our holy day and stuff like that playing a lot shows at the weekend. Yeah, it works. Of course, if we would do it 100 percent professionally, we would be able to play more shows. Not the last three years because of this fucking Corona, but we are totally independent, we can do what we want. We don't have to live from the music. There is a good side and a bad side. The bad side is we are not able to play all the offers we get. The good side is we do what we want and we are totally independent.
MiM: I have seen the band, as I told you before. I remember that you are always happy on the stage. Is easy after almost 40 years to take your holidays to do tours around the world?
TK: Yeah, we take all our holidays to play. At the moment, last two years, we played very little because of Corona. Last year's five shows in the year. In 2020 three shows only. A lot of shows were postponed and were canceled. So we hope maybe May / June Festival season and this year there will be some shows take place. It will get better, hopefully.
MiM: If this situation finally happens and you can go out and play shows again, are you going to take the music that is included in “Four thousand beers” and get a setlist with all songs, or are you going to maintain your setlist?
TK: Yeah, we always change a little bit our setlist. We want to play songs from all our albums so there is no special setlist to promote this box because we played a lot of songs off that box anyway. We always try to do good mixes but when you have so many albums out, it's difficult to choose the songs, so they are always big discussions in the band about which songs we play and which songs do not.
MiM: And are some songs that are always on the setlist?
TK: Yeah. “Empty Tankard is the song I think we played from the very first show. We played it ever. It has to be “Chemical invasion”, “Morning after”, and “Zombie attack”. So we are really not able to kick out these songs out of the setlist. I don't think it would work. So yeah, but it's not. It's not easy to choose the best songs.
MiM: Do you have some concerts scheduled?
TK: Yes, we have some festivals in Germany, and I think there is the very same thing in Spain. I don't have it in my mind exactly, because at the moment everything is totally confusing with the concerts: postponing, canceling. I hope in April may we have a better look on it. What's going to happen and what not?
MiM: Fortunately, all the Tankard musicians have another job. The musicians were having really hard times with these situations.
TK: Really hard time, especially bands as small or as big as Tankard, and they live from the music. They have really, really hard times.
MiM: Gerre, I will tell you this I met Tankard with 'Chemical Invasion' because an LP arrived in Cuba. I don't know exactly how. And from this moment, your band is followed by the headbangers there in Cuba follow your band. Maybe you never know but your first CD’s and Lps were really very well received.
TK: Great, that's nice to hear, so I saw on YouTube for Show Rolling Stones played in Cuba a couple of years ago. It was a great festival, and I know heavy metal fans are worldwide, and we really would love to play in Cuba one day, that would be really awesome.
MiM: We are going to finish the interview. If you want to say something to the Spanish fans, the Cuban fans. This is your moment?
TK: Yes, first of all, we would like to thank the fans worldwide for their support in the last 40 years without the fans take would nothing and we will come back for sure, for sure to Spain, of course. And hopefully one day to Cuba. And the most important thing at the moment is to stay healthy. And, of course, stay thirsty and the most important thing, stay heavy.
