El supergrupo brasileño de death metal, The Troops of Doom, con el guitarrista Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz (ex Sepultura) junto al bajista/vocalista Alex Kafer (Enterro, Explicit Hate, ex-Necromancer), el baterista Alexandre Oliveira (Southern Blacklist, Raising Conviction), y el guitarrista Marcelo Vasco (Patria, Mysteriis, y aclamado artista gráfico de la talla de Slayer, Kreator, Machine Head, Soulfly y Hatebreed), se están preparando para el lanzamiento de su próximo y muy esperado disco “Antichrist Reborn”. El álbum debut de la banda será lanzado como CD digipack y cassette el 15 de abril de 2022 y en vinilo a continuación a través de Alma Mater Records, el sello discográfico dirigido por Fernando Ribeiro de Moonspell. Raúl Cardona de Made in Metal conversó con Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz sobre este álbum y los próximos pasos de la banda.

MiM: The Troops of Doom desde su lanzamiento se ha convertido en una banda mediática por la excelente propuesta que han presentado desde un inicio, entonces me gustaría que me cuentes ¿cómo nació la idea de formar la banda?

ToD: Esta idea empieza en 2015 conmigo (Jairo), Alex Kaffer y Marcelo Vasco. Le pedimos a Stian Shaggrath (Dimmu Borgir y Chrome Division) que fuera parte de este proyecto, pero no pudo viajar con nosotros y solo ser parte de un proyecto de estudio. Queríamos hacer una banda de verdad, hacer giras y todo, así que tuvimos que rechazar esta idea. En 2019, la banda Enterro de Alex fue telonera de mi ex banda The Mist en un concierto en Río de Janeiro y él me pidió que tocara una de mis canciones con ellos en un jam, ¡así que tocamos “Bestial Devastation”! El público y yo nos quedamos estupefactos con este cover/jam por la voz de Alex – se parece a Max al comienzo de Sepultura – y después de ese concierto, Alex y yo comenzamos a hablar sobre este proyecto nuevamente. Entonces, al comienzo de los tiempos de pandemia, decidimos unirnos a la banda y grabar algunas de mis ideas.

MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tenían muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

ToD: ¡Sí! Les pedí que se unieran a mí para hacer esta música, les dije que quería continuar con lo que había dejado en el pasado, cuando dejé Sepultura. Todos estuvieron de acuerdo con la idea, ¡les encantó!

MiM: En el EP “The Rise of Heresy”, las dos últimas pistas son precisamente dos canciones de la época en que estabas con Sepultura. ¿Cómo te sentiste grabando estas canciones una vez más y cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cómo es tu relación actual con los miembros o ex miembros (como Max e Igor) de Sepultura?

ToD: Bueno, lo primero que hice cuando decidimos poner a la banda en la pista fue llamar a Max, Iggor y Paulo, contarles mi idea y pedirles su bendición. Después pude volver a grabar algunas de mis canciones con ellos sin cambiar nada, respetando los originales, pero usando los solos que tenemos hoy y la tecnología para que suene mejor que en los 80. Mi relación con ellos es muy respetuosa y les tengo un cariño enorme a todos. Siempre recibí de ellos el mismo respeto y cariño.

MiM: El nuevo disco de la banda “Antichrist Reborn” (Alma Mater, 2022) que estará disponible el 15 de abril, es un disco en el que mantienen la crudeza y velocidad que caracterizan el sonido de los 80. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del disco? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción musical?

ToD: Este es el punto más importante para nosotros y también el desafío más difícil: mantener la misma atmósfera de los años 80 pero utilizando las herramientas y la tecnología del 2000. Creo que lo hicimos con maestría, con la gran ayuda de Peter Tätgren (productor) en el icónico The Abyss Studio y Jonas Kjellgren de Blacklounge Studio.

MiM: Con este sonido tosco la banda marca una diferencia con el sonido habitual de las bandas de Death Metal actuales. Dime, ¿por qué la decisión de mantener este sonido?

ToD: Bueno… Siempre digo que “No queremos traer nada nuevo a nuestros fans. No queremos descubrir la rueda o inventar el fuego” y creo que este es el punto principal: estamos haciendo el mismo sonido y proceso que yo estaba haciendo a mediados de los ochenta. Eso no es una sorpresa. Las otras bandas de death metal eligen otras formas de evolucionar: nos gusta crear música en estos términos, es natural.

MiM: Siento en este disco una gran influencia del sonido y la cadencia al tocar de bandas como Slayer y los primeros discos de Sepultura. ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de esto? ¿Cuáles son vuestras principales influencias a la hora de escribir nuevo material?

ToD: ¡Tienes cien por ciento de razón! Me gusta decir que tengo las mismas influencias hoy que tenía en los años ochenta. Entonces, es natural crear música con la misma atmósfera de esa época. Me encanta Slayer, los primeros Sepultura, Sodom, Kreator, Death, Possessed y Celtic Frost. Lo que estamos haciendo ahora es "Saludar" a las bandas que amamos en los años 80.

MiM: Tanto la portada de este disco como las fotos de la banda tienen la misma estética visual que la de los discos de los ochenta. ¡Excelente! ¿Cuéntame sobre esta idea? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la portada del álbum?

ToD: Bueno, vivimos en diferentes estados de Brasil, esta información es muy importante para comprender nuestro proceso de creación, por lo que debemos tomar fotografías por separado. También creamos, tocamos y grabamos canciones de esta manera, lejos unos de otros. La foto fue tomada uno por uno con diferentes fotógrafos y cada uno en su propia casa. Marcelo Vasco tuvo la tarea de reunir a todos en el mismo lugar. La portada es una evolución de la portada de “Bestial Devastation”, y recuperé a Sergio Oliveira, el artista original que pintó esta primera portada de Sepultura usando la misma paleta de colores del álbum “Bestial Devastation”.

MiM: ¿Qué bandas de la escena brasileña o internacional me recomendarías para escuchar?

ToD: Bueno, no escucho mucho a bandas nuevas, pero puedo recomendar algunas bandas de Brasil que me gustan demasiado: Desalmado, Manger Cadavre, Guro, etc.

MiM: Una vez que el álbum esté disponible para todos los fanáticos de la banda el 15 de abril, ¿cuáles son tus planes para promocionarlo? ¿Cuándo se podrán ver en España?

ToD: Estamos trabajando ahora en esta idea de hacer giras por Europa. Seguro que tocaremos lo antes posible para nuestros fans y amigos europeos. Nuestro sello discográfico Alma Mater es de Portugal (Fernando Ribeiro de Moonspell es el propietario) y quieren que vayamos a Portugal y España lo antes posible... así que... espero verte en la carretera también.

Brazilian death metal supergroup, The Troops of Doom, featuring guitarist Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz (ex-Sepultura) alongside bassist/vocalist Alex Kafer (Enterro, Explicit Hate, ex-Necromancer), drummer Alexandre Oliveira (Southern Blacklist, Raising Conviction), and guitarist Marcelo Vasco (Patria, Mysteriis, and acclaimed graphic artist from the likes of Slayer, Kreator, Machine Head, Soulfly and Hatebreed), are gearing up for the release of their highly anticipated upcoming album “Antichrist Reborn”. The band's debut album will be released as CD digipack and cassette on April 15, 2022 and on vinyl to follow via Alma Mater Records, the record label run by Moonspell's Fernando Ribeiro. Raúl Cardona from Made in Metal spoke with Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz about this album and the band's next steps.

MiM: The Troops of Doom since its release has become a media band due to the excellent proposal that they have presented since the beginning, so I would like you to tell me how the idea of forming the band was born?

ToD: This idea starts in 2015 with me (Jairo), Alex Kaffer, and Marcelo Vasco. We asked Stian Shaggrath (Dimmu Borgir and Chrome Division) to be a part of this Project but he couldn´t get on the road with us and only be part of a studio Project. We wanted to make a real band, make tours and everything, so we had to decline this idea. In 2019 Alex´s band Enterro were the opening act for my ex-band The Mist in a gig in Rio de Janeiro and he asked me to play one of my songs with them in a jam, so we played “Bestial Devastation”! The crowd and I became stupefied with this cover/jam because of Alex´s voice – he looks like Max at the beginning of Sepultura – and after that gig, I and Alex started to talk about this Project again. So, at the beginning of the pandemic times, we decided to join the band and record some of my ideas.

MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have?

ToD: Yes !!! I asked them to join me to do this music – I told them that I wanted to continue what I had stopped in the past when I left Sepultura. So, everybody was ok with the idea, they love it !!!

MiM: On the EP “The Rise of Heresy” the last two tracks are precisely two songs from the time you were with Sepultura. How did you feel recording these songs once again and how did the idea come about? How is your current relationship with members or former members (like Max and Igor) of Sepultura.

ToD: Well, the first thing I did when we decided to put the band on the track was to call Max, Iggor, and Paulo, and tell them my idea and ask’em their blessing. After that I could re-record some of my songs with them without changing anything, respecting the original ones, but using the solos we have today and the technology to make it sounds better than it was back then in the 80s. My relationship with them is very respectful and I have a huge affection for them all. I always received back the same respect and affection from them.

MiM: The new album of the band "Antichrist Reborn" (Alma Mater, 2022) which will be available on April 15, is an album in which they maintain the rawness and speed that characterize the sound of the 80s. What was the process of recording and musical production of the disc? In which recording studio did it take place? Who was in charge of the musical production?

ToD: This is the most important point for us and also the most difficult challenge – maintaining the same atmosphere from the 80s but using the tools and technology from 2000. I believe we did that with mastery, with the great help from Peter Tätgren (producer) from the iconic The Abyss Studio and Jonas Kjellgren from Blacklounge Studio.

MiM: With this rough sound the band makes a difference from the usual sound of current Death Metal bands. Tell me why the decision to keep this sound?

ToD: Well…I always say that “We do not want to bring anything new to our fans. We do not want to discover the wheel or invent the fire” and I think this is the main point of it – We are doing the same sound and process that I was doing in the middle eighties. That is no surprise. The other death metal bands choose other ways to evolutes – we like to create music in these terms, it is natural.

MiM: I feel in this album a great influence of the sound and the cadence when playing of bands like Slayer and the first Sepultura albums. What is your opinion about it? What are your main influences when writing new material?

ToD: You are a hundred percent right! I like to say that I have the same influences today that I had in the eighties. So, it is natural to create music with the same atmosphere from that era. I love Slayer, old Sepultura, Sodom, Kreator, Death, Possessed, and Celtic Frost. What we are doing now, is “Greetings” to the bands we love in the 80s.

MiM: Both the cover of this album and the photos of the band have the same visual aesthetic as that of the eighties albums. Excellent! Tell me about this idea? Who was in charge of the album cover?

ToD: Well, we live in different states in Brazil – this information is very important to understand our process of creation – so we have to take pictures separately one from another. We also create, play, and record songs in this way, far from each other. The photo was taken one by one using different photographers and each one in its own house. Marcelo Vasco had the task to join everybody in the same spot. The cover art is an evolution from the “Bestial Devastation” cover art, and I brought back Sergio Oliveira, the original artist who painted this first Sepultura cover using the same color palette from the “Bestial Devastation” album. 

MiM: What bands from the Brazilian or international scene would you recommend me to listen to?

ToD: Well, I don´t listen too much to new bands, but I can try some bands from Brazil that I like too much: Desalmado, Manger Cadavre, Guro, etc

MiM: Once the album is available to all fans of the band on April 15th, what are your plans to promote it? When can they be seen in Spain?

ToD: We are working now on this idea of touring in Europe. For sure we will be playing as soon as possible for our European fans and friends. Our record label Alma Mater is from Portugal (Fernando Ribeiro from Moonspell is the owner) and they want us to go to Portugal and Spain ASAP…so…hope to see you on the road too.
