Si cantar en chino es una barrera para alguien, ¡que así sea!
Su música solo puede clasificarse como Metal Progresivo. Son de China y lanzan su álbum debut 'One' el 6 de mayo a través del prestigioso sello Inside Out Music. Made in Metal habla un poco con los músicos para conocer un poco más de este disco.
MiM: ¡Hola chicos! ¿Cómo estás? Mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con la banda. Para aquellos que no conocen la banda y pueden descubrirla a través de la entrevista, me gustaría que comentaran sobre los inicios. ¿Cuándo surgieron y cómo surgió la idea?
OU: ¡Hola Raúl, encantado de conocerte! Jing, Chris y Anthony se conocen desde hace muchos años tocando juntos en Beijing con muchos tipos diferentes de bandas, desde jazz hasta fusión, rock, etc. Tenemos influencias muy diferentes. Lynn nos fue presentada por un amigo en común. La idea detrás de la banda era crear algo desde el corazón y el resultado estaba más allá de nuestra imaginación.
MiM: ¿Cuáles fueron los principales problemas al principio? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda y qué significa OU?OU: Los principales problemas fueron grabar todo, fue un álbum muy desafiante desde el punto de vista de la interpretación, pero todo surgió de manera muy orgánica. El nombre OU es muy especial, se hará cada vez más claro lo que significa con el paso del tiempo.
MiM: One (Inside Out Music, 2022) cuenta con una espectacular y sorprendente producción musical. Es un disco donde la banda ha conseguido un sello distintivo, único, sin duda. Con influencias de géneros como Avant Garde, Krautrock y Space Rock. Es una mezcla entre Pink Floyd, Radio Head, Bjorn e Isao Tomita. ¿Quién fue su productor?
OU: ¡Gracias! La producción es realmente especial y rompe muchos moldes (por ejemplo, ¡sin compresión en la caja!). Todo lo grabamos nosotros, excepto la batería, que se grabó en dos estudios aquí en Bejing: 55 tec y China Music House. El disco fue mezclado por un viejo amigo y colega Chris Badami en Portrait Recording Studios en NJ y fue producido por Anthony Vanacore y Chris Badami.
MiM: ¿Por qué la idea de cantar en chino? ¿Crees que puede ser una barrera para llegar al público anglosajón?
OU: ¡Somos una banda china, por lo que las voces en chino fueron una elección obvia! Si es una barrera para alguien, ¡que así sea! Por supuesto, esperamos que la gente pueda mantener una mente abierta.
MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción musical del disco en medio de la pandemia y el confinamiento?
OU: Afortunadamente no tuvo demasiado efecto excepto por un par de meses de retraso en el medio.
MiM: ¿Tuviste muy claro el sonido que querías lograr?
OU: Sí y no, había una idea general, pero era más un sentimiento y menos una idea clara del sonido en sí.
MIM: Cuando se trata de escribir material nuevo, ¿cuáles son tus principales influencias?
OU: ¡Hay demasiados para enumerarlos! Algunas de nuestras cabezas: Devin Townsend, The Gathering (Anneke), Bjork, Yoko Kanno (famoso compositor de anime japonés), Steve Reich, Rush, Miles Davis, Dream Theater, muchos, muchos, muchos más.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? Conciertos o giras programadas en este año?
OU: ¡Planeamos hacer una gira y seguir haciendo nuevos álbumes! Esperamos que podamos empezar a hacer giras antes de que pase mucho tiempo.

If singing in Chinese is a barrier to anyone, then so be it!
OU is an open band and its music can be only classified as Progressive Metal. They are from China and releases their debut album 'One' on May 6 via the prestigious label Inside Out Music. Made in Metal talks slightly with the band to know a little more about this album.
MiM: Hello guys! How are you? My name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with the band. For those who don´t know the band and can discover it through the interview, I would like you to comment on the beginnings of the band? When did they arise and how did the idea come about?
OU: Hello Raúl, nice to meet you! Jing, Chris, and Anthony have known each other for many years playing together in Beijing with many different kinds of bands ranging from jazz to fusion to rock, etc. We have very different influences. Lynn was introduced to us by a mutual friend. The idea behind the band was to create something from the heart and the result was beyond our imaginations.
MiM: What were the main problems at the beginning? What is the concept behind the band name and what does OU mean?
OU: The main problems were just getting everything recorded, it was a very challenging album to make from a performance standpoint, but everything came about very organically. The name OU is very special, it will become more and more clear what it means as time goes by.
MiM: One (Inside Out Music, 2022) has a spectacular, surprising musical production. It is an album where the band has achieved a distinctive stamp, unique, undoubtedly. With influences from genres such as Avant-Garde, Krautrock, and Space Rock. It's a mix between Pink Floyd, Radio Head, Bjorn, and Isao Tomita. Who was its producer?OU: Thank you! The production is special indeed and breaks a lot of conventions (for example no compression on the snare drum!) Everything was recorded ourselves except for the drums which were recorded at two studios here in Bejing: 55 tec and China Music House. The record was mixed by long-time friend and colleague Chris Badami at Portrait Recording Studios in NJ and was produced by Anthony Vanacore and Chris Badami.
MiM: Why the idea of singing in Chinese? Do you think it could be a barrier to reach the Anglo-Saxon public?
OU: We are a Chinese band, so the vocals being sung in Chinese were an obvious choice! If it’s a barrier to anyone, then so be it! Of course, we hope people can keep an open mind.
MiM: How was the musical production process of the album in the midst of the pandemic and confinement?
OU: Thankfully it didn’t have too much of an effect except for a couple of months delay in the middle.
MiM: Were you very clear about the sound you wanted to achieve?
OU: Yes and no, there was a general idea, but it was more of a feeling and less of a clear idea of the sound itself.
MIM: When it comes to writing new material, what are your main influences?
OU: There are too many to list! Some off the top of our heads: Devin Townsend, The Gathering (Anneke), Bjork, Yoko Kanno (famous Japanese anime composer), Steve Reich, Rush, Miles Davis, Dream Theater, many many many many more
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled in this year?
OU: We plan to tour and keep making new albums! We hope we can start touring before too long.
