"Tratamos de centrarnos en cosas nuevas que nos impulsen tanto como grupo como individuos"
King Buffalo es un trío estadounidense de rock psicodélico que lanzó su nuevo álbum, "Regenerator", el 2 de septiembre bajo Stickman Records. Made in Metal habla con la banda para saber todo sobre este disco.
MiM: "Regenerator" (Stickman Records, 2022) es el último álbum de la banda que forma parte de una especie de trilogía. Cuéntame, ¿cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cuál es el concepto de esta trilogía?
KB: Cuando llegó la pandemia y todos nuestros planes de gira para 2020 se suspendieron, comenzamos a improvisar en un intento de mantenernos ocupados. Después de un par de semanas, nos dimos cuenta de que teníamos varias horas de ideas que nos entusiasmaban. Empezamos a agrupar las cosas en lo que pensamos que serían registros únicos y cohesivos. Terminamos con lo que eventualmente se convirtió en los tres álbumes, y nos pusimos a trabajar en la producción y grabación. En cuanto al concepto, normalmente no me gusta ser específico sobre los significados de las canciones o discos. Tiendo a dejar que los oyentes decidan por sí mismos y se relacionen con las cosas de la manera que mejor resuene con ellos. Hay una especie de arco suelto que se transmite a través de los tres discos, pero no diría que deben escucharse secuencialmente para poder seguir.
MiM: "Regenerator" tiene un sonido increíble. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar?
KB: Lo grabamos nosotros mismos en nuestro espacio habitual de ensayo/estudio en el que hemos grabado casi todos los discos de King Buffalo. En cuanto al estilo de producción, traté de ir por un poco más del tipo de "banda en una habitación" de sonido, en lugar del sonido más pulido y producido de TBOR (The Burden of Restlessness).
MiM: "Hours" es una canción que cuando la escuchas siento que se destaca de la estética del álbum. ¿Cómo lo ves?
KB: Creo que podrías tener razón. Hicimos un pequeño esfuerzo para que este álbum fuera un poco más diverso desde el punto de vista sonoro que los discos anteriores.
MiM: En este disco siento una fuerte influencia de bandas del movimiento Krautrock alemán. A la hora de componer nuevo material, ¿cuáles son vuestras principales influencias?
KB: Honestamente, cuando estamos en un ciclo de escritura trato de evitar escuchar influencias externas. Dicho esto, he sido un gran fanático del Krautrock durante muchos años, así que estoy seguro de que esas influencias se han colado.
MiM: Si tuvieras que juzgar críticamente la trayectoria de la banda, ¿qué les dirías a nuestros lectores?
KB: Me gustaría pensar que hemos crecido bastante desde nuestros inicios, y espero que siga avanzando.
MiM: ¿Podemos dar por hecho el sonido de la banda o, por el contrario, son una banda inquieta a la que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?
KB: Con cada álbum tratamos de centrarnos en cosas nuevas que nos impulsen tanto como grupo como a nivel individual. Por supuesto, siempre habrá elementos que se mantengan algo consistentes, ya que son solo una parte de cómo tocamos y nos acercamos a la música. Nunca queremos hacer el mismo disco dos veces y, con suerte, continuaremos encontrando nuevos sonidos con los que tocar.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo en la banda al momento de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un disco? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
KB: La gran mayoría de nuestras canciones comienzan como jam sessions. A partir de ahí, llevo las grabaciones preliminares a casa y comenzaré a cortar, mover cosas y compartirlas con los muchachos. A medida que empezamos a establecer la estructura de una canción, empiezo a agregar algunas melodías vocales ásperas, generalmente con una o dos líneas de letra. A partir de ahí, Scott comenzará a intervenir con más ideas líricas. Es un proceso bastante colaborativo y democrático hasta la finalización final de la letra.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?
KB: Tenemos un resto ocupado de 2022 con un montón de fechas de giras por EE. UU., y estamos finalizando los planes para 2023 muy pronto.

King Buffalo is an American Psychedelic Rock trio, that released its new album, "Regenerator" on September the 2nd under Stickman Records. Made in Metal talks with the band to find out everything about this album.
MiM: Regenerator (Stickman Records, 2022) is the last album of the band that is part of a kind of trilogy. Tell me about it, how did the idea come about? What is the concept of this trilogy?
KB: When the pandemic hit and all our touring plans for 2020 were put on hiatus we started jamming in an attempt to stay busy. After a couple weeks, we realized we were sitting on several hours of ideas that we were excited about. We began grouping things into what we thought would be unique and cohesive records. We ended up with what eventually became the 3 albums, and we got to work producing and recording. As far as the concept goes, I typically don’t like to get specific about the meanings of songs or records. I tend to like to let listeners decide for themselves, and relate to things in whatever way resonates best with them. There is a loose sort of arc that carries through all three records, but I wouldn’t say that they need to be listened to sequentially in order to follow along.
MiM: "Regenerator" has an amazing sound. How were the recording and production process? In which recording studio did it take place?
KB: We recorded it ourselves in our usual rehearsal/studio space that we’ve recorded just about every King Buffalo record in. As far as the production style, I tried to go for a little more of a “band in a room” type of sound, instead of the more polished and produced sound of TBOR (The Burden of Restlessness).
MiM: "Hours" is a song that when you listen to it I feel that it stands out from the aesthetics of the album. How do you see it?
KB: We made a little bit of an effort to have this album be a little more sonically diverse than previous records.
MiM: In this album, I feel a strong influence of bands from the German Krautrock movement. When it comes to composing new material, what are your main influences?
KB: Honestly, when we’re in a writing cycle, I try to avoid listening to outside influences. With that said, I have been a huge fan of Krautrock for many years so I’m sure those influences have crept in.
MiM: If you were to judge the trajectory of the band critically, what would you say to our readers?
KB: I’m not sure I understand the question. I’d like to think that we’ve grown quite a bit since our inception, and I hope that continues moving forward.
MiM: Could we take the sound of the band for granted or, on the contrary, are they a restless band that likes to innovate and open up new proposals?
KB: With each album, we try to focus on new things that push us both as a group and as individual players. There will of course always be elements that remain somewhat consistent as they’re just sort of a part of how we play and approach music. We never want to make the same record twice and will hopefully continue to find new sounds to play with.
MiM: How is the creative process in the band at the moment of composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall to one or two people?
KB: The vast majority of our songs start as jam sessions. From there I will take the rough recordings home and start cutting things up, moving stuff around and sharing it with the guys. As we settle in on the structure of a song I’ll start adding some rough vocal melodies, usually with a line or two of lyrics. From there Scott will start chiming in with more lyric ideas. It's a fairly collaborative and democratic process up until the very final completion of the lyrics.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album? Concerts or tours scheduled this year?
KB: We have a busy rest of 2022 with a bunch of US tour dates, and we’re finalizing plans for 2023 very soon.
