El poderoso trío de rock sueco Liar Thief Bandit lanzó su álbum 'Diamonds' el 16 de septiembre a través del sello The Sign Records. Made in Metal habla con Mike, guitarra, voz y compositor principal para descubrir todo sobre este nuevo álbum.
MiM: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda?
LTB: La banda fue fundada a fines de 2014 por mí, tenía algunas canciones escritas y quería comenzar una banda de rock con letras sinceras y un fuerte enfoque en las melodías. Esta es la banda en la que siempre quise estar. Comenzamos como la mayoría, escribiendo y grabando canciones, encontrando nuestro camino, comenzando a tocar en vivo, y desde allí progresamos y nos convertimos en lo que somos hoy.
MiM: 'Diamonds' (The Sign Records, 2022) es un excelente álbum. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este nuevo trabajo?
LB: ¡Gracias! Estamos muy contentos con el resultado. Líricamente, 'Diamonds' despega donde termina 'Deadlights' (The Sign Records, 2021). El tema a lo largo de 'Deadlights' fue los cambios en la vida y cómo lidiar con ellos. En “Diamonds”, el tema continúa, pero con un enfoque ligeramente diferente, las nuevas canciones son más sobre lo que sucede después de que se realizan los cambios y cómo nutrir la positividad que surge de cambiar las cosas para mejor.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material?
LTB: Escribo las canciones más o menos de principio a fin por mi cuenta, tanto musical como líricamente. Normalmente dejo abierto el final de una nueva canción. Se lo presento a Niklas y William y lo revisamos, hacemos cambios si es necesario y, por último, decidimos cómo termina la canción juntos. De esta manera, todos participan y los otros chicos ponen su propio estilo en la canción para que sea un esfuerzo de la banda, algo que todos podamos aprobar.
MiM: En algunas canciones, siento una fuerte influencia de bandas como Volbeat. ¿Cuáles son vuestras principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?
LTB: Nuestras influencias van desde el rock de los 70 y el garage rock de los 90 hasta el rock moderno de los 2000. Bandas como Kiss, Thin Lizzy, The Hellacopters, The Hives y Foo Fighters han influido mucho en nuestro sonido. Nunca hemos sido ni seremos influenciados por Volbeat.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. ¿Dónde tuvo lugar la grabación del disco?
LTB: ¡Nos alegra saber que te sientes así! Grabamos el álbum en Tilt Recording Studios en Strömstad, en la costa oeste de Suecia, durante el verano de 2021. Max Dahlby, que dirige el estudio, hizo un gran trabajo de ingeniería y se aseguró de que obtuviéramos el sonido que queríamos. Nuestro baterista William hizo la mezcla y Jonas Siöström en Tambourine Studios en Malmö, Suecia, hizo la masterización. Jonas también dominó 'Deadlights' y estamos muy contentos de trabajar con él.
MiM: ¿Cómo describirías un show en vivo de Liar Thief Bandit?
LTB: Liar Thief Bandit es enérgico, entretenido e íntimo. Vemos a nuestros seguidores como nuestros amigos. A pesar de que somos nosotros los que estamos en el escenario, siempre vemos a la audiencia como iguales. Estamos juntos en esto, la banda somos tan amantes de la música como cualquiera que vaya a un concierto y el resultado de esta mentalidad es un espectáculo práctico en el que todos en la sala se sienten bienvenidos.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando lanzas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es dar vueltas. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
LTB: Estamos en una gira europea la semana después del lanzamiento, justo ahora, que nos lleva a Alemania, Suiza, Bélgica y Dinamarca. También nos dirigimos a nuestra primera gira por España en noviembre, ¡pronto se revelará más información al respecto!
MiM: ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como The Sign Records a una banda como Liar Thief Bandit para consolidarse en la escena?
LTB: The Sign Records son cruciales para hacer llegar la palabra de Liar Thief Bandit a la escena. Antes de firmar con ellos, teníamos un bastión local y algunas giras europeas en nuestro haber que causaron algunas turbulencias breves. Pero con el lanzamiento de nuestro primer lanzamiento en The Sign Records, 'Deadlights', todo por lo que habíamos trabajado, combinado con su forma de poner a las bandas en el mapa del rock'n'roll, marcó una gran diferencia y, de repente, teníamos mucho más con lo que trabajar. The powerful Swedish rock trio Liar Thief Bandit released their album 'Diamonds' on September 16 under The Sign Records. Made in Metal talks with Mike, guitar, vocal, and main songwriter to find out everything about this new album.
MiM: How did the idea of creating the band come about?
LTB: The band was founded in late 2014 by me, I had some songs written and wanted to start a rock band with heartfelt lyrics and heavy focus on melodies. This is the band I always wanted to be in. We started like most bands, writing and recording songs, finding our way, started playing live shows, and from there we progressed and became what we are today.
MiM: “Diamonds” (The Sign Records, 2022) is an excellent album. What can you tell me about this album?
LTB: Thank you! We are very happy with the result. Lyrically, 'Diamonds' takes off where 'Deadlights' (The Sign Records, 2021) ends. The theme throughout “Deadlights” was the changes in life and how to deal with them. On “Diamonds” the theme continues but with a slightly different approach, the new songs are more about what happens after the changes are made and how to nourish the positivity that comes from changing things for the better.
MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material?
LTB: I write the songs more or less from start to finish on my own, both musically and lyrically. I usually leave the end of a new song open. I present it to Niklas and William and we go through it, make changes if needed, and lastly, we decide how the song ends together. This way everyone participates and the other guys put their own style on the song to make it a band effort, something we all can sign off on.
MiM: In some songs, I feel a strong influence from bands like Volbeat. What are your main influences when composing new material?
LTB: Our influences range from 70s rock and 90s garage rock to modern rock of the 2000s. Bands like Kiss, Thin Lizzy, The Hellacopters, The Hives, and Foo Fighters have affected our sound a lot. We have never been and will never be influenced by Volbeat.
MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. Where did the recording of the album take place?
LTB: We’re happy to hear you feel that way! We recorded the album at Tilt Recording Studios in Strömstad on the west coast of Sweden during the summer of 2021. Max Dahlby who runs the studio did a great job engineering and making sure we got the sound we wanted. Our drummer William did the mixing and Jonas Siöström at Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden did the mastering. Jonas mastered “Deadlights” as well and we are very happy to work with him.
MiM: How would you describe a Liar Thief Bandit live show?
LTB: A Liar Thief Bandit live show is energetic, entertaining, and intimate. We see our supporters as our friends. Even though we’re the ones up on stage, we always view the audience as equals. We’re in this together, the band is as much music lovers as anyone going to a concert and the result of this mindset is a hands-on show where everyone in the room feels welcome.
MiM: Normally, when you release a new album, the normal thing afterward is to spin. What plans do you have to promote this album?
LTB: We are on a European tour the week after the release, just right now, which takes us to Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Denmark. We are also heading for our very first tour of Spain in November, more info about this will be revealed soon!
MiM: What can a record label like The Sign Records offer to a band like Liar Thief Bandit to establish themselves in the scene?
LTB: The Sign Records are crucial in getting the word of Liar Thief Bandit out into the scene. Before we signed with them, we had a local stronghold and a few European tours under our belt that had caused some brief turbulence. But with the launch of our first release on The Sign Records, “Deadlights”, all that we had worked for combined with their ways of putting bands on the rock’n’roll map made a huge difference, and all of a sudden, we had a lot more to work with much thanks to them and their way of working with bands they believe in.

LTB: We are so excited to release our brand-new album and finally come to Spain for an extensive tour in November. See you guys on the road!
