"Sonamos mucho más diversos que solo una banda glam/sleaze"

La banda francesa de Sleaze Rock BlackRain lanzará su nuevo álbum titulado "Untamed" bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV. Made in Metal, charlas con Swan Hellion, guitarrista y cantante, para conocer todo sobre este disco y la historia de la banda.

MiM: Bueno, para empezar, me gustaría que explicaras a los lectores ¿cuál es el concepto musical y estético que existe detrás de la banda?

SH: Comenzamos a tocar en BlackRain hace unos quince años, justo después de la escuela secundaria, éramos grandes fanáticos de los primeros álbumes de Metallica, especialmente "Kill'em all", pero resultó que lo que realmente disfrutábamos tocar en el escenario era esto. música heavy/glam de los 80, nos enamoramos de la apariencia/actitud y el paquete de estilo de vida del rock 'n' roll, por lo que la banda se ha inspirado mucho en toda esta escena de los 80, hoy en día, sonamos mucho más diversos que solo una banda glam/sleaze como les gusta llamarla, nuestra inspiración es bastante amplia musicalmente, lo que significa que nos inspiramos en muchos tipos diferentes de rock y metal, visualmente, todavía nos importa mucho la apariencia, la actitud y los conciertos, nosotros Creo que todo es parte del espectáculo, no solo la música.

MiM: ¡Más de quince años de carrera! Cuanta energía a pesar de todos estos años. Cuéntame, ¿cómo lo ves?

SH: Da miedo pensar que ya ha pasado tanto tiempo jaja... desarrollamos esta amistad única a través de los años y hoy estamos mucho más "con los pies en la tierra" de lo que solíamos ser cuando éramos más jóvenes, la pasión sigue siendo la misma, pero sabemos cómo es el negocio de la música hoy en día y ya no soñamos con el loco estilo de vida de los 80, sabemos que esos años están muertos y pasados, es muy difícil ganarse la vida decentemente con la música, por lo que nuestro enfoque es un poco diferente ahora. Simplemente hacemos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para poder grabar y tocar conciertos de una buena manera, la música es nuestra prioridad cuando lanzamos álbumes, etc., pero también tenemos trabajos diarios y una familia de la que cuidar... funciona bien como está, evolucionamos constantemente, progresamos y hacemos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para llevar a la banda al siguiente nivel.

MiM: ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Qué tan difícil ha sido para la banda ingresar al mundo de la industria musical?

SH: Bueno, en realidad estuvo bastante bien entrar en la pequeña industria de la música, al menos en Francia, siempre hemos sido los únicos tocando ese tipo de música allí, más o menos, y éramos tan salvajes y locos antes. Entonces que pase lo que pase, supongo que era difícil que la gente nos ignorara incluso si no les caíamos bien jajaja… De todos modos, aunque éramos fiesteros, también éramos muy serios con la música y nunca nos perdíamos un ensayo, Pasamos mucho tiempo trabajando en la banda y supongo que valió la pena bastante rápido, teníamos contratos discográficos y giras, hicimos lo nuestro con lo poco que teníamos. Sin embargo, ha sido muy difícil darle a BlackRain un nombre fuera de Francia, y todavía estamos luchando con eso, esperamos que las cosas mejoren con nuestro nuevo álbum “Untamed”.

MiM: “Untamed” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2022) es un disco que en mi opinión es deudor de lo mejor del sonido Hard Rock de la época dorada del Sunset Strip de los 80. Con un sonido fresco y actual, suena cien por cien Blackrain. ¿Cómo te sientes acerca de este nuevo álbum y cuál crees que es la razón de su sonido fresco?

SH: ¡Gracias por decir esto, es un gran cumplido! Creo que tienes razón, con “Untamed” todavía puedes escuchar claramente nuestras influencias de los 80 pero hay mucho más, todos somos muy abiertos de mente y nuestra inspiración proviene de una amplia gama de diferentes tipos de música. Esta vez no nos limitamos a seleccionar solo las pistas que sonaban típicamente de los 80, decidimos mantener más libertad en el proceso de escritura y dejar que la inspiración fuera donde quisiera, estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado y Asumo que la buena producción del álbum juega un papel importante en el hecho de que consideremos a “Untamed” como nuestro mejor lanzamiento hasta el momento.

MiM: ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?

SH: Realmente no sé qué respuesta dar, lo que me importa son las melodías, a partir de eso, trato de hacer que la letra coincida con la atmósfera de la canción, por lo que tal vez haya muchas variaciones con respecto a la agresividad en este álbum intento que todo sea lo más coherente posible, la música, las letras, la melodía... no tratamos de sonar así o asá, simplemente empezamos a componer y nunca sabemos a dónde nos lleva.

MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?

SH: Hannes Braun, cantante de Kissin´ Dynamite hizo la mezcla/masterización, el resto, como casi todo el mundo hoy en día, ha sido grabado en casa, principalmente en el estudio de mi casa, a excepción de la batería, todavía tenemos que hacer eso como antes en un entorno real de estudio. Hannes hizo un gran trabajo y estamos muy agradecidos, la banda realmente alcanzó un nivel completamente nuevo con esta producción.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de escribir música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen en la banda?

SH: Por lo general, mi parte del trabajo es compongo todo, disfruto mucho haciendo esto, a veces, los otros chicos me envían ideas o solicitudes, luego, si puedo, uso sus cosas también, pero principalmente soy yo.

MiM: Me encanta la portada del álbum. ¿Con quién estáis trabajando la imagen de los discos?

SH: Sí, la obra de arte es bastante impresionante en mi opinión, trabajamos nuevamente con Megan Mushi, quien también hizo la portada de nuestro álbum anterior, planeamos usar siempre sus servicios y tener esos esqueletos en las portadas de cada álbum en diferentes lugares o contextos. , un poco como Eddie en Iron Maiden.

MiM: ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como Steamhammer/SPV a una banda como Blackrain para consolidarse en la escena?

SH: En nuestro caso, el sello está haciendo un gran trabajo con respecto a la promoción de cada álbum, es probablemente la razón por la que estoy respondiendo sus preguntas en este momento y, sobre todo, nos beneficiamos de su red en YouTube, por ejemplo, esto nos permite llegar a más audiencia de la que podríamos si estuviéramos trabajando solos. Una vez más, la industria de la música no se parece en nada a lo que solía ser, así que supongo que el papel de un sello discográfico hoy en día es bastante reducido en comparación con lo que era en los años 80/90, por ejemplo.

MiM: Normalmente, cuando lanzas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es dar vueltas. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

SH: No soy yo quien lidia con esto en la banda, así que realmente no puedo contarte sobre esos planes, solo sé que estamos lidiando con muchos conciertos que tendrán lugar en 2023.

French Sleaze Rock band Blackrain will release their new album titled "Untamed" under the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label. Made in Metal, talks with Swan Hellion, guitar player, and singer, to learn everything about this album and the band's history.

MiM: Well, to begin with, I would like you to explain to the readers what is the musical and aesthetic concept that exists behind the band

SH: We started playin´ in BlackRain for about fifteen years now, right after High school, we were big fans of Metallica’s first albums, especially “Kill´em all” but it turned out that what we really enjoyed playin´ on stage was this heavy/glam music from the '80s, we fell for the look/attitude and rock ´n´ roll lifestyle package, so the band has been greatly inspired by all this 80´s scene, today, we sound much more diverse than only a glam/sleaze band as they like to call it, our inspiration is quite wide musically, meaning we get inspiration from many different kinds of rock and metal, visually, we still care a lot about the look, the attitude, and the concerts, we think it’s all part of the show, not only music.

MiM: More than fifteen years of career! How much energy despite all these years? Tell me about it, how do you see it?

SH:  It’s scary to think it’s been already so long haha.. we developed this unique friendship through the years and today we’re much more “down to earth” than what we used to be when we were younger, the passion is still the same but we know what the music business is like today and we’re not dreaming about the insane 80´s lifestyle anymore, we know those years are dead and gone, it’s very hard to make a decent living out of music so our approach is a bit different now. We just do our best to be able to record and play concerts in a good way, Music is our priority when we release albums and so on but we also have daily jobs and family to take care of… it works just fine as it is, we constantly evolve, make progress and do our best to get the band to the next level.

MiM: How were those beginnings? How difficult has it been for the band to enter the world of the music industry?

SH: Well, it was actually quite okay to get into the small music industry, in France at least, we’ve always been the only ones playing that kind of music down there, more or less, and we were so wild and crazy back then that no matter what, I guess it was difficult for people to ignore us even if they didn´t like us lol… Anyway, even though we were party animals, we were also very serious about the music and would never miss a rehearsal, we spent a lot of time working on the band and I guess it paid off quite fast, we had record deals and tours, we did our thing with the little we had. Tho, it’s been very tough to give BlackRain a name out of France, and we’re still struggling with that, we hope things get better with our new album “Untamed”.

MiM: “Untamed” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2022) is an album that in my opinion is indebted to the best of the Hard Rock sound of the golden era of the Sunset Strip of the '80s. With a fresh, contemporary sound, it sounds one hundred percent Blackrain. How do you feel about this new album and what do you think is the reason for its fresh sound? 

SH: Thanks for sayin´ this, it’s a big compliment! I believe you’re right, with “Untamed” you can still hear clearly our influences from the 80´s but there’s so much more to it, we’re all very open-minded and our inspiration comes from a wide range of different types of music. This time we didn’t limit ourselves only to selecting the tracks that sounded typically 80´s, we decided to keep more freedom in the writing process and to just let the inspiration go wherever it would, I’m delighted with the result and I assume the good production of the album plays a big role in the fact that we consider “Untamed” as our best release yet.

MiM: What are your main influences when composing new material?

SH: I don´t know what answer to give really, what matters to me is the melodies, from that, I try to make the lyrics match with the atmosphere of the song, which is why maybe there are a lot of variations regarding the aggressivity on this album, I try to make everything as coherent as possible, Music, Lyrics, melody… we don’t try to sound like this or that, we just start composing and we never know where it leads us.

MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?

SH: Hannes Braun,  singer in Kissin´ Dynamite did the mix/mastering, the rest, like almost everybody today has been recorded at home, mostly in my home studio, except for the drums, we still need to do those like before in a real studio. Hannes did a crazy good job and we’re so thankful, the band really reached a whole new level with this prod.

MiM: How is the creative process of writing music, is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones who compose in the band?

SH:  It’s usually my part of the job to compose everything, I enjoy doing this a lot, sometimes, the other guys send me ideas or requests, then if I can, I use their stuff as well, but mainly it’s me.

MiM: I love the album cover artwork. With whom are you working on the image of the discs?

SH: Yes, the artwork is pretty awesome in my opinion, we worked again with Megan Mushi, who did our previous album cover as well, we plan to always use his services, and have those skeletons on every album cover in different places or contexts, a little bit like Eddie in Iron Maiden.

MiM: What can a record label like Steamhammer/SPV offer a band like Blackrain to establish themselves in the scene?

SH: In our case, the label is doing a great job regarding the promotion of each album, it’s probably the reason why I’m answering your questions right now and most of all, we benefit from their network on YouTube, for example, this allows us to reach more audience than we could if we were working by ourselves. Once again, the music industry is nothing like it used to be so I guess the role of a record label nowadays is quite reduced compared to what it was in the 80/90´S for example.

MiM: Normally when you release a new album, the normal thing afterward is to spin. What plans do you have to promote this album?

SH: I am not the one dealing with this in the band so I can’t really tell you about those plans, I only know we’re dealing with many concerts that will take place in 2023.
