La banda de metal progresivo Xeno, con sede en Middelburg, Países Bajos, lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Reconstruction' el 16 de noviembre en Art Gates Records. Made in Metal habla con la banda al completo para conocer más detalles de este disco.

MiM: “Reconstruction” (Art Gates Records, 2022) tiene un sonido impresionante. Pasajes armónicos y melódicos, pasajes progresivos magistralmente ejecutados por tres guitarristas. El ritmo creado por el bajo y la batería es excelente. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco? ¿de qué se trata?

X: Durante la pandemia, como muchas otras bandas, tuvimos algunos problemas para motivarnos. Sin shows en vivo, sin festivales, y nuestro nuevo álbum 'Sojourn' recién lanzado, pero sin shows para promocionarlo, nos sentimos un poco desanimados. Sin embargo, no queríamos quedarnos sentados esperando un cambio o darnos por vencidos, sino que queríamos seguir avanzando. Pero había este sentimiento persistente en el fondo de nuestras mentes que nos hizo mirar hacia atrás por alguna razón: llámelo nostalgia, o tal vez alguna depresión coronaria, pero comenzamos a sumergirnos en nuestro pasado colectivo. Había buenas canciones en 'Atlas Construct', y cuanto más nos sumergíamos en ellas, más sentíamos que queríamos rehacer estas canciones y darles el honor que se merecen; mejor producción, composición de nuevas canciones con el conjunto de habilidades recién adquiridas que tenemos como banda ahora, y pulir estas canciones y darles un brillo encantador. “Atlas Construct” fue el comienzo del viaje de Xeno, y sin estas raíces no estaríamos donde estamos hoy. La "reconstrucción" se trata de una especie de catarsis, aceptar su pasado, respetarlo, pero también (para los miembros más nuevos) comprender de dónde venimos para seguir adelante. Nosotros, como banda, buscamos el cierre, el honor y la aceptación espiritual de nuestro pasado para poder avanzar como colectivo. Para emprender un nuevo viaje, debes dejar tu casa en orden y feliz, si eso tiene sentido. Por lo tanto, el EP trata sobre la creación y la destrucción, la armonía y el equilibrio del universo, ya sea en tu mente o en la gran escala del universo.

MiM: En "Pillars" el sonido es oscuro y pesado, muy cercano a las bandas de Death Metal. También se escucha una Orquesta Sinfónica de fondo. ¿Es tan? ¿Cómo lo ves? ¿Qué me puedes decir acerca de esto?

X: Con “Pillars” queríamos crear una atmósfera más oscura y agresiva. Mientras que "Columns" trata sobre la fuerza de la creación, "Pillars" trata sobre la fuerza de la destrucción y el caos. Es por eso que esta canción está más en el territorio del Death Metal. Pero, después de la destrucción, tienes espacio para la nueva creación: esa es la parte en la que entra la guitarra acústica, que luego se convierte en la parte de la orquesta sinfónica. Estos pasajes orquestales son un símbolo o una analogía del concepto de creación: por eso hay tantas partes sinfónicas en “Columns”. Ambas canciones están conectadas de esta manera, pero también están conectadas, por ejemplo, con riffs pesados/caóticos. Véalo como una especie de Ying y Yang: ambos lados deben contener pequeños fragmentos del lado opuesto para funcionar.

MiM: "Reconstrucción" representa el ciclo de pasado, presente y futuro, creación y perdición. La banda reescribe canciones de su primer álbum "Atlas Construct" con su sonido actual. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

X: De hecho, comenzó como una idea deshonesta, si recordamos correctamente, una noche particularmente borracha. Empezó como una broma: ¡¡¡Deberíamos volver a escribir "Atlas Construct!!!! Pero, cuanto más pensábamos en ello, más la idea empezaba a volverse seria y real. Pero no queríamos rehacer todas las canciones, ya que también queríamos tener espacio para escribir música nueva o concentrarnos en nuestro show en vivo en ese momento. Como resultado, en lugar de reescribir todo, elegimos tres de nuestras canciones favoritas de ese álbum y las agrupamos en este EP. Como dijimos en la primera pregunta, también queríamos traer canciones a la gloria de “Atlas Construct” que nunca tuvieron, y al hacerlo, buscamos un cierre “metafísico” y permiso para avanzar desde esta era.

MiM: En relación a la presentación del disco "Reconstruction" en vivo. ¿Cómo dirías que es un concierto de Xeno?

X: Nos enorgullecemos de estar preparados para shows en vivo, y este show en particular no fue diferente. Habíamos pasado meses planeando setlists, luces, practicando y pensando en este show. Nuestro ingeniero de sonido, Stefan (¡puedo obtener un aplauso!), es una parte tan importante de la banda como los músicos. ¿Qué es un show en vivo de Xeno? Enérgico, bien pensado, dinámico, muy ajustado y bien equilibrado. Intentamos crear una nueva lista de canciones para cada espectáculo: ¿qué tipo de público habrá allí?, ¿con quién tocamos?, ¿cuál es el sistema de sonido?, ¿qué tamaño tiene el lugar? Según estas preguntas, optamos por un set de death metal dinámico, progresivo o más sencillo. Pero durante el show de lanzamiento del EP tocamos casi todas nuestras canciones, lo que resultó en un set de 1,5 horas. Después quedamos destrozados, pero la energía de la multitud nos mantuvo en marcha. 

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

X: Tenemos algunos conciertos planeados para el próximo año y estamos trabajando muy duro para inscribir nuestro nombre en festivales en BeNeLux. Se acerca un gran anuncio, pero no podemos decir más sobre este tema... ¡Qué misterioso, eh! Pero será enorme para nosotros. Mientras tanto, estamos poniendo nuestra energía en escribir música nueva y promocionar nuestra banda tanto en el mundo en línea como fuera de línea.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Progressive Metal band Xeno, based in Middelburg, The Netherlands, released their new album "Reconstruction" on November 16 on Art Gates Records. Made in Metal talks with the band to find out everything about this album. 

MiM: “Reconstruction” (Art Gates Records, 2022) has an impressive sound. Harmonic and melodic passages, progressive passages masterfully executed by three guitarists. The rhythm created by the bass and the drums is excellent. What can you tell me about this record? what's it about? 

X: During the pandemic, as many other bands did, we had some trouble motivating ourselves. We felt a little down on our luck with no live shows, no festivals, and our new album ‘Sojourn’ just brought out, but no shows to promote it. However, we did not want to sit around waiting for change or give up but felt like we wanted to keep moving forward. But there was this nagging feeling in the back of our minds which kept us looking backward for some reason: call it nostalgia, or perhaps some corona depression, but we started to dive into our collective past. There were good songs on ‘Atlas Construct’, and the more we dived into them, the more we felt that we wanted to redo these songs and give them the honor they deserve; better production, new songwriting with the newly acquired set of skills we have as a band now, and polish these songs up and give them a lovely shine. “Atlas Construct” was the start of the Xeno journey, and without these roots, we would not be where we are today. “Reconstruction” is about a catharsis of sorts, coming to terms with your past, respecting it, but also (for newer members) understanding where we come from in order to move forward. We, as a band, sought closure, honor, and spiritual acceptance from our past in order to move forward as a collective. In order to embark on a new journey, you must leave your house in order and happy, if that makes sense. The EP is therefore about creation and destruction, the harmony and balance of the universe, be it in your mind or on the grand scale of the universe.

MiM: In "Pillars" the sound is dark and heavy, very close to Death Metal bands. A Symphony Orchestra is also heard in the background. Is it so? How do you see it? What can you tell me about this? 

X: With “Pillars” we wanted to create a darker, aggressive atmosphere. Whereas “Columns” is about the force of creation, “Pillars” is about the force of destruction and chaos. This is why this song is more in the Death Metal territory of things. But, after destruction, you have room for a new creation: that’s the part when the acoustic guitar comes in, which then evolves into the symphonic orchestra part. These orchestral passages are a symbol or analogy for the concept of creation: that’s why there are so many symphony parts in “Columns”. Both songs are connected in this manner but are also connected with, for example, heavy/chaotic riffing. See it as a sort of Yin and Yang: both sides need to contain little bits of the opposing side to work.   

MiM: "Reconstruction" represents the cycle of past, present, and future, creation and doom. The band rewrites songs from their first album "Atlas Construct" with their current sound. How did the idea come about? 

X: It actually started as a rogue idea, if we remember correctly, one particularly drunken night. It began as a joke: wE ShOuLd rErWrItE AtLaS cOnStRuCt!!! But, the more we thought about it, the more the idea started to become serious and real. But we didn’t want to redo all songs, as we also wanted to have room to write new music or focus on our live show at the time. As a result, instead of rewriting the full thing, we chose three of our favorite songs from that album and bundled them into this EP. As we said in the first question, we also wanted to bring songs on “Atlas Construct” glory they never had, and in doing so, seeking ‘metaphysical’ closure and permission to move forward from this era. 

MiM: In relation to presenting the album "Reconstruction" live. How would you say it's a Xeno concert? 

X: We pride ourselves in being prepared for live shows, and this particular show was no different. We had spent months planning setlists, and lights, practicing, and thinking about this show. Our sound engineer, Stefan (can I get a round of applause!), is as much a part of the band as the musicians. What is a Xeno live show? Energetic, well thought out, dynamic, very tight, and well-balanced. We try to come up with a new setlist for every show: what kind of crowd will be there, who are we playing with, what is the sound system, and what size is the venue? Based on these questions we either go for a dynamic, proggy, or more straightforward death metal set. But during the EP release show, we played almost all of our songs, which resulted in a set of 1,5 hours. We were shattered afterward, but the energy in the crowd kept us going.   

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? 

X: We have a few concerts planned next year, and we are working very hard to get our name down on festivals in the BeNeLux. There is a big announcement coming up, but we cannot say more about this subject…So mysterious eh! But it will be huge for us. In the meantime, we’re putting our energy toward writing new music and promoting our band in both the online and offline world.
