"Una de las grandes experiencias fue trabajar junto a la Orquesta Filarmónica de Barcelona"
El polifacético, virtuoso y multiinstrumentista Victor Smolski lanzará su nuevo álbum "Guitar Force" el próximo 3 de febrero bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Massacre Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con Víctor para saber todo sobre este disco.
MiM: Haciendo un poco de historia, ¿cómo recuerdas tu paso por la banda de rock Pesniary y en Mind Odyssey?
VS: Era muy joven cuando comencé a tocar en la banda Pesniary. Esta fue una de las bandas más grandes de la Unión Soviética y yo tenía 16 años cuando hicimos giras con grandes espectáculos. A veces eran uno o dos espectáculos por día en el estadio. Entonces, esta fue una experiencia perfecta para aprender a tocar en vivo y en estudio. 1997 comencé mi propia banda Inspector y viajé por Europa. A principios de los noventa hice muchos shows en Alemania y decidí quedarme allí. Después de muchos trabajos de estudio en Alemania, encontré la banda Mind Odyssey y trabajamos juntos durante cinco años. Lancé con Mind Odyssey excelentes CD como "Nailed to the shade" y "Signs", donde hice muchos experimentos. Hicimos giras por todo el mundo y uno de los mejores recuerdos fue la gira junto con Savatage.
MiM: ¿Cuánto crees que te ha influido el trabajo de tu padre Dmitry Smolski y cuánto de él hay en ti hoy?
VS: Mi padre ha sido mi mentor musical. He aprendido mucho de él. Siempre me llevaba a los ensayos, cuando preparaba algunos espectáculos de filarmónica y ópera. Por lo tanto, vi el desarrollo de sus ideas en casa hasta el resultado final con la orquesta de abrazos. Aprendí de él composición y arreglo. Escuchamos y hablamos sobre muchos estilos de música, clásica, jazz, rock y me abrió los ojos para muchas cosas. Su manera de enseñarme trato de seguir con mi hijo.
MiM: ¡¡“Guitar Force” (Massacre Records, 2023) tiene un sonido increíble!! Heavy Metal sinfónico, capaz de envolverte, hacerte soñar y llevarte a un hermoso viaje a través de la música. ¿Cómo fue volver al estudio para producir y grabar este álbum después de su último álbum “Majesty & Passion - J.S. Bach” (2004)?VS: "Guitar Force" fue el primer CD, que mezclé completamente solo. Desde corona cambié mi escuela de guitarra a lecciones en línea y creé mi propio estudio. Tuve suficiente tiempo para trabajar sin ninguna presión. Me gusta mucho el resultado y creo que es uno de los mejores sonidos que he producido con mis CDs. "Guitar Force" es realmente lo mejor de mis ideas y forma de tocar. Puedes encontrar cosas técnicas y trituradoras, pero también melodías hermosas y muy dinámicas. Después de tantos años componiendo para diferentes cantantes como el CD “All stars” de Nuclear Blast, trabajando con cantantes como Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Tobias Sammet (Avantasia), Andi Deris (Helloween), Tarja, etc., componiendo canciones para Rage y Almanac donde cambié muchos cantantes, tengo muchas ganas de volver a hacer un CD instrumental.
MiM: En este disco fuiste el productor y grabador. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
VS: Grabé mis guitarras y mezclé todo el CD en Unity Music School Studio en Hamm/Westf. en Alemania. No tengo ninguna presión para hacer canciones que se ajusten a las plataformas de transmisión y que no duren más de dos minutos y medio para adaptarse a las listas de reproducción de radio. La música instrumental no es un negocio comercial. Componer este tipo de música se puede comparar con escribir un libro. Tienes que tomarte el tiempo mientras escuchas para comprender el sentimiento y disfrutar de un estado de ánimo diferente. Uso muchas guitarras diferentes como sitar, acústica y traté de encontrar muchos sonidos diferentes para mis guitarras.
MiM: La canción "Guitar Force" es un viaje por el Heavy Metal con un sonido moderno, donde en ocasiones el sonido acústico con música Sinfónica hace de esta canción una obra maestra. ¿Cuénteme sobre la experiencia de trabajar con la Orquesta Filarmónica de Barcelona?
VS: En este CD mezclé metal con mundo clásico. Una de las grandes experiencias fue trabajar junto a la Orquesta Filarmónica de Barcelona y el fantástico pianista Enric García, que me ayudó con la grabación en los Estudios Medusa de Barcelona. Grandes músicos clásicos que entienden la pasión del rock en mis canciones. Encontré la orquesta hace mucho tiempo e hicimos una gira por Europa como “Lingua Mortis Orchestra”.
MiM: ¿Cómo se te ocurrió la idea de grabar la canción "Unity" con tu antiguo compañero de banda de Rage, Peter "Peavy" Wagner?
VS: “Unity” es una de las canciones más populares que he compuesto. Hago muchos talleres donde sigo tocando esta canción y cambié algunas cosas. Quiero tener una nueva versión en CD.
MiM: Este disco tiene varios invitados de lujo. ¿Cuéntame cómo surgió la idea y la experiencia de trabajar con ellos?
VS: Me gusta tocar con diferentes músicos. Grabar mis cosas o ser invitado con grandes músicos siempre me da nuevas inspiraciones. He conocido a muchos músicos fantásticos en mi carrera musical, hice talleres con chicos como Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert, Shawn Lane, etc. Además, en la última gira por Europa con Almanac invité a muchos invitados a disfrutar del escenario con nosotros. Estos fueron excelentes dos meses con aprox. espectáculo de cuarenta s sin parar como invitado especial de Lordi.
MiM: ¿Qué representa para ti Johann Sebastian Bach y cuánto crees que te ha influido la música compuesta por él?
VS: Escucho y toco mucha música clásica, pero Bach encaja mejor para hacer arreglos modernos. Ritmo recto, bonitas melodías y bellas armonías. He aprendido mucho de Johann Sebastian sobre sonorización y modulación.
MiM: Fuiste parte de Rage con la alineación compuesta por Peter "Peavy" Wagner y Mike Terrana. ¿Cómo recuerdas esa época?
VS: Hice Rage durante 15 años, componiendo la mayor cantidad de canciones durante este tiempo, produciendo y organizando espectáculos antes de fundar mi banda Almanac en 2015. Fue un gran momento, especialmente al principio, cuando empezamos en 1999. con la alineación de Peavy y Mike. Trabajamos muy duro, ensayamos todos los días y éramos una formación fuerte y una banda en vivo realmente genial.
MiM: Victor con este álbum has llevado tus habilidades con la guitarra a un nuevo nivel. Después de esto, ¿cuál sería el siguiente nivel al que Víctor nos invitaría a pasar?
VS: Todavía tengo muchas ideas de lo que quiero hacer y trato de mantenerme creativo. Compongo nuevas canciones para mi banda, termino de grabar cosas para el nuevo CD de la banda Voodoo Gods, donde mezclo guitarras locas con Death Metal y orquesta. Para este año ya tengo algunos trabajos de estudio geniales y trato de tener tiempo para apoyar a mis estudiantes de la escuela en línea en todo el mundo. Incluso si la industria de la música no está pasando por su mejor momento en este momento, creo que mucha gente todavía está interesada en alguna producción de calidad.
MiM: Si tuvieras que juzgar críticamente tu carrera como músico, ¿qué les dirías a nuestros lectores?
VS: En mi vida como músico nunca hice ningún compromiso y realmente solo hice lo que me gusta y siempre doy lo mejor de mí. Creo que esta es la razón por la que después de casi cuarenta años de mi carrera musical, todavía disfruto lo que hago.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?
VS: Planeé el lanzamiento de “Guitar Force” como mi regalo de cumpleaños el 1 de febrero, la fecha de lanzamiento es el 3 de febrero y el 4 de febrero haré una gran fiesta/espectáculo en vivo con muchos invitados. El próximo mes planeé un par de shows en Alemania y presentaré mi CD en NAMM Show en América y Guitar Summit en Alemania. Además, planeo hacer algunos festivales de verano y algunas actividades de promoción en mis redes sociales y en mi canal de YouTube.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.
VS: Cuando estoy de gira, siempre trato de reunirme con mis fans en el lugar de merchandising, hago muchos talleres donde conozco a mis alumnos y durante las lecciones en línea tengo mucho contacto con fans de todo el mundo. Realmente aprecio el apoyo y el interés de la gente por mi música. Gracias a todos y disfruten escuchando el CD “Guitar Force”.

The versatile, virtuoso, and multi-instrumentalist Victor Smolski will release his new album "Guitar Force" on February 3rd under the prestigious record label Massacre Records. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with Victor to find out everything about this album.
MiM: Making a bit of history, how do you remember your time in the rock band Pesniary and in Mind Odyssey?
VS:I was very young when I started playing in the band Pesniary. This was one of the biggest bands in the Soviet Union and I was 16 years old when we toured big shows. Sometimes it was one or two shows per day in the stadium. So, this was a perfect experience for me to learn how to perform live and in the studio. 1997 I started my own band Inspector and traveled through Europe. At the beginning of the nineties, I did a lot of shows in Germany and decided to stay there. After many studio jobs in Germany, I found the band Mind Odyssey and we worked together for five years. I released with Mind Odyssey great CDs like “Nailed to the shade” and “Signs” where I did a lot of experiments. We toured worldwide and one of the great memories was touring together with Savatage.
MiM: How much do you think the work of your father Dmitry Smolski has influenced you and how much of him is there in you today?
VS: My father has been my musical mentor. I´ve learned a lot from him. He always took me to rehearsal, when he prepared some shows in philharmonic and opera. So, I saw the development of his ideas at home till end results of the huge orchestra. I learned from his composing and arrangement. We listened and talked about many styles of music, classical, jazz, and rock and he has opened my eyes to many things. His way to teach me I try to continue with my son.
MiM: “Guitar Force” (Massacre Records, 2023) has an amazing sound!! Symphonic Heavy Metal, is capable of enveloping you, making your dream, and taking you on a beautiful journey through music. What was it like to go back to the studio to produce and record this album after your last album “Majesty & Passion - J.S. Bach” (2004)?
VS: "Guitar Force" was the first CD, which I mixed completely by myself. Since corona, I moved my guitar school to online lessons and created my own studio. I had enough time to work without any pressure. I like it very much the result and I think it´s one of the best sounds I´ve ever produced with my CDs. "Guitar Force" is really the best of my ideas and playing. You can find shredding, and technical stuff, but also very dynamic, beautiful melodies. After so many years composing for different singers like the “All stars” CD from Nuclear Blast working with singers like Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Tobias Sammet (Avantasia), Andi Deris (Helloween), Tarja, and so on, composing songs for Rage and Almanac where I changed a lot of singers, I really want to do an instrumental CD again.
MiM: On this record, you were the producer and recorder. How was the recording and production process?
VS: I recorded my guitars and mixed the whole CD at Unity Music School Studio in Hamm/Westf. in Germany. I don´t have any pressure to do songs that fit streaming platforms and not longer than two and a half minutes to fit into radio playlists. Instrumental music is not a commercial business. Composing this kind of music can compare to writing a book. You have to take time while listening to understand the feeling and enjoy the different moods. I use a lot of different guitars like sitar, and acoustic, and tried to find a lot of different sounds for my guitars.
MiM: The song "Guitar Force" is a journey through Heavy Metal with a modern sound, where on occasions the acoustic sound with Symphonic music makes this song a masterpiece. Please tell me about the experience of working with the Barcelona Philharmonic Orchestra.
VS: On this CD I mixed metal with the classic world. One of the great experiences was working with the Barcelona Philharmonic Orchestra and the fantastic piano player Enric Garcia, who helped me with recording in Medusa Studios in Barcelona. A great classical musician who understands rock passion in my songs. I found the orchestra a long ago and we did Europe Tour as “Lingua Mortis Orchestra”.
MiM: How did you get the idea to record the “Unity” track with your old Rage bandmate Peter "Peavy" Wagner?VS: “Unity” is one of the most popular tracks I´ve composed. I do a lot of workshops where I keep playing this song and changed some things. I want to have a new version on CD.
MiM: This album has several luxury guests. Tell me how the idea came about and the experience of working with them.
VS: I like to play with different musicians. Recording my stuff or being a guest with great musicians always gives me new inspiration. I´ve met a lot of fantastic musicians in my musical career and did workshops with guys like Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert, Shawn Lane, etc. Also, on the last Europe Tour with Almanac, I invited a lot of guests to enjoy the stage with us. These were great two months with approx. Forty shows nonstop as a special guest from Lordi.
MiM: What does Johann Sebastian Bach represent for you and how much do you think the music composed by him has influenced you?
VS: I listen to and play a lot of classic music, but Bach best fits the modern arrangement. Straight groove, nice melodies, and beautiful harmonies. I´ve learned a lot from Johann Sebastian about voicing and modulation.
MiM: You were part of Rage with the lineup consisting of Peter "Peavy" Wagner and Mike Terrana. How do you remember that time?
VS: I did Rage for 15 years, composing the most songs during this time, producing and organizing shows before I founded my band Almanac in 2015. This was a great time, especially in the beginning, when we started in 1999 with Peavy and Mike's lineup. We worked really hard, rehearsed every day, and were a strong lineup and a really kicking-ass live band.
MiM: Victor with this album you have taken your guitar skills to a new level. After this, what would be the next level that Victor would invite us to go to?
VS: I still have many ideas about what I want to do and I try to stay creative. I compose new songs for my band and finish recording stuff for a new CD from the band Voodoo Gods, where I mix crazy guitar playing with Death Metal and orchestra. For this year I already have some cool studio jobs and I try to have time to support my online school students worldwide. Even if the music industry has not had the best time at the moment, I believe that a lot of people are still interested in some quality production.
MiM: If you were to critically judge your career as a musician, what would you say to our readers?
VS: In my life as a musician I never did any compromises and truly did only what I like and always give my best. I think this is the reason after nearly forty years of my musical career, I still enjoy what I´m doing.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Are concerts or tours scheduled this year?
VS: I planned the release from “Guitar Force” as my birthday present on the 1st of February, release date is the 3rd of February, and 4th of February I do a big party/live show with a lot of guests. Next month I planned a couple of shows in Germany and I´ll present my CD at NAMM Show in America and Guitar Summit in Germany. Also, I plan to do some summer festivals and some promotional activities on my social media and YouTube channel.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
VS: When I´m on tour, I always try to meet my fans in merchandising places, do many workshops where I meet my pupils, and during online lessons I have a lot of contact with fans worldwide.
