La banda sueca de metal sinfónico Kardinal Sin lanzará su nuevo álbum 'S.A.L.I.G.I.A' a través de Massacre Records. Made in Metal habla con el baterista Mikael Asp, para conocer algunos detalles de este nuevo disco.

MiM: 'S.A.L.I.G.I.A' (Massacre Records, 2023) es un disco con un sonido sinfónico sorprendente, envolvente e impactante. Espectaculares coros con pegadizos riffs de guitarra. Los temas son interpretados con una increíble carga dramática. ¿De qué trata la letra de las canciones del álbum? ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco?

KS: El álbum se llama SALIGIA, que es el latín de Cardinal Sins, también conocido como The Seven Deadly Sins. Cada letra de SALIGIA representa uno de los pecados. ¡Siete letras, siete pecados!: Superbia. Acedia, Luxuria, Invidia, Gula, Ira y Avaritia

Todo el álbum trata sobre el apocalipsis que enfrenta el mundo debido a la devastación ambiental y la guerra en general. Cómo nosotros, los seres humanos, por la forma en que elegimos vivir en esta tierra, ha empujado los límites de lo que está dentro de la razón. Cómo los políticos se esfuerzan por ser los mejores, por el sufrimiento de los demás.

MiM: ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de grabación y producción musical de este nuevo álbum? ¿Crees que es superior al disco anterior?

KS: Trabajamos en este álbum durante más de dos años, en gran parte debido a la pandemia, y el proceso de grabación es bastante similar al de Victorious.

Grabamos todo nosotros mismos con la ayuda de nuestro técnico Michael Waerner, quien también nos ayuda mientras salimos en vivo. La mezcla estuvo a cargo de Fredrik Folkare en Chrome Studios en Estocolmo. Tenemos una manera de hacer esto que nos queda muy bien y supongo que trabajaremos de la misma manera con el tercer álbum.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de la banda como productores de su propio disco? ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

KS: Como dije anteriormente, lo hacemos nosotros mismos en nuestros propios estudios. De esta manera tenemos control sobre el proceso y también manteniendo los costos lo más bajo posible.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de la composición de la música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen en la banda?

KS: Bueno, la experiencia total que escuchas en "SALIGIA" es el trabajo de todos los miembros de Kardinal Sin. Por lo general, comienza con que Thomas o yo tenemos una idea para una canción que creamos en nuestros propios estudios en casa. Luego lo llevamos al ensayo y aquí es donde todos ponen su mente y esfuerzo para hacer la canción lo mejor posible. Siempre nos esforzamos por tocar e interpretar las canciones con la mentalidad de que la canción está por encima de las interpretaciones individuales.

MiM: El sonido de la banda navega entre el Power Metal y el Heavy Metal. ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias? ¿Cómo tratas de incluir elementos personales al crear música?

KS: Thomas y yo escuchamos todo tipo de música, desde canciones populares suecas hasta hard rock y metal. Es difícil dejar de lado influencias específicas... Nos gustan las melodías, las armonías y los estribillos pegadizos

MiM: Kardinal Sin es claramente una banda con futuro por delante. La profesionalidad y el enfoque de la banda están más que latentes. ¿Dónde te ves en 5 años?

KS: ¡Oh, gracias hombre! ¡Espero que tengas razón! Esa es una pregunta que normalmente te hacen en una entrevista de trabajo. Pero creo que todavía grabamos álbumes y escribimos música con la que sentimos que tenemos una conexión. Tengo algunas ideas para los próximos álbumes que tal vez llevarán a Kardinal Sin a un viaje diferente, todavía metal, por supuesto, pero con más consideración. 

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este disco? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?

KS: El álbum se lanza el 10 de marzo y estamos buscando festivales para tocar en primavera y verano. Tenemos muchas ganas de salir y tocar las nuevas canciones junto con los viejos favoritos.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Swedish Symphonic Metal band Kardinal Sin will release their new album 'S.A.L.I.G.I.A' under Massacre Records. Made in Metal talks to the drummer Mikael Asp, to find out everything about this album.

MiM: “S.A.L.I.G.I.A” (Massacre Records, 2023) is an album with a surprising, enveloping, and impressive symphonic sound. Spectacular choirs with catchy guitar riffs. The themes are interpreted with an incredible dramatic charge. What are the lyrics of the songs on the album about? What can you tell me about this record?

KS: The album is called SALIGIA which is Latin for the Cardinal Sins aka The seven deadly sins. Each letter in SALIGIA represents one of the sins. Seven letters….seven sins! : Superbia. Acedia, Luxuria, Invidia, Gula, Ira, and Avaritia

The whole album is about the apocalypse the world is facing due to environmental devastation and war in general.  How we, human beings, by the way, we chose to live on this earth, have pushed the limits of what is within reason. How the politicians strive to be the better ones through the suffering of others.

MiM: How has the recording and music production process of this new album been? Do you think it is superior to the previous album? 

KS: We worked on this album for over two years, much because of the pandemic, and the process of the recording is quite the same as for Victorious. 

We record everything ourselves with help from our technician Michael Waerner who also helps us out as we go live. The mixing was done by Fredrik Folkare at Chrome Studios in Stockholm. We have a way to do this that fits us very well and I guess we will work the same way with the third album.

MiM: How was the experience of the band as producers of their own album? How did the idea come about?

KS: As I said above, we do it ourselves in our own studios. This way we have control over the process and also keep the costs as low as possible. 

MiM: How is the creative process of the composition of the music, is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones that compose in the band?

KS: Well, the total experience you hear on SALIGIA is the work of all the members of Kardinal Sin. It usually starts with that I or Thomas has an idea to a song we created in our own studios at home. Then we take it to rehearsal and here is where everybody puts their mind and effort in to make the song as good as possible.  We always strive to play and perform the songs with the mindset that the song is above individual performances.

MiM: The band's sound navigates between Power Metal and Heavy Metal. What are your main influences? How do you try to include personal elements when creating music?

KS: Me and Thomas listen to all kinds of music, from Swedish folksongs to hard rock and metal. It’s hard to put down any specific influences… We are all about melodies, harmonies, and catchy choruses.

MiM: Kardinal Sin is clearly a band with a future ahead. The band's professionalism and focus are more than latent. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

KS: Oh thanks, man! I hope you are right! That’s a question you usually get in a work interview. But I believe we still record albums and write music that we feel we have a connection to. I have some ideas for the next albums that maybe will take Kardinal Sin on a different journey, still the metal of course, but with more thoughtfulness.   

MiM: ¿What plans do you have to promote this album?

KS:  The album is released on the 10th of March and we are looking for festivals for the spring and summer to play at. We are extremely hungry to get out there and play the new songs together with the old favorites.
