La banda italiana de Folk/Pagan/Power Metal Elvenking, fundada en 1997, lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Reader Of The Runes - Rapture' el 28 de abril a través de AFM Records. MiM: “Reader Of The Runes – Rapture” (AFM Records, 2023) tiene un sonido capaz de envolverte en una historia épica que te invita a ser parte de ella. ¿Qué me podrías decir de este disco?

Damna: Gracias por lo que dices, de hecho, la intención de un narrador es poder involucrar al lector, o en este caso al oyente, en la historia que está tratando de contar, por lo que esto significa que de alguna manera hemos logrado ese objetivo. No ha sido fácil encontrar el equilibrio adecuado entre la letra y la música, pero creo que al final llegamos a cierta armonía entre los dos y tal vez por eso nos sentimos tan conectados con la historia y sus personajes mientras escuchamos. al álbum. Damna: Creo que hemos alcanzado un nuevo nivel si nos fijamos en las composiciones y los arreglos. Tuvimos mucho tiempo para preparar las canciones y las preproducciones de este y el siguiente álbum y creo que tuvimos una buena oportunidad de cuidar cada detalle. Esto no significa que las canciones estén demasiado pensadas, es solo que logramos alcanzar exactamente lo que teníamos en mente. Por lo general, empezamos a tener una idea clara de lo que queremos y luego fallamos parcialmente en encontrar exactamente lo mismo cuando finalmente producimos el álbum. En mi opinión, esta vez incluso superamos nuestras propias expectativas. Así que no diría que este álbum es mejor que sus predecesores, eso es algo que un artista a menudo intenta hacer, para mejorar todo el tiempo. No sé si este es el caso, solo nos preocupamos por hacer buenos álbumes para nosotros y para nuestros fans si es posible y les puedo decir que estamos muy satisfechos con esto.

MiM: Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de trabajar con Scott Atkins (Cradle of Filth, Behemoth).

Damna: A menudo queremos probar diferentes soluciones cuando se trata del sonido y la producción de nuestros álbumes. Somos fans de los productores e ingenieros de sonido, por lo que siempre estamos al pendiente. Con Scott fue genial. Tan pronto como lo contactamos, revisó nuestra discografía para comprender lo que necesitábamos en términos de sonido y producción. Damna: Esta es la segunda parte de la historia, sí. Sabes, siempre nos han fascinado los álbumes conceptuales y las óperas rock de artistas como King Diamond, W.A.S.P., Savatage y otros, y siempre hemos deseado hacer nuestro propio álbum conceptual. Probamos con el álbum "The Scythe" en 2007, pero era más un álbum basado en temas. Justo antes de comenzar las sesiones de composición de lo que se convirtió en “Reader of the Runes – Divination”, Aydan y yo tuvimos esta idea y descubrimos que definitivamente era demasiado gruesa y con capas para caber en un solo álbum, así que decidimos comenzar esta aventura con una trilogía de álbumes. Ocho son los personajes en los que nos centramos y ocho canciones del capítulo “Adivinación” hablan de las visiones que el Lector convoca a cada uno de ellos. En este capítulo “Rapto” veremos el resultado de esas predicciones y el efecto que cada una de ellas tiene sobre los ocho personajes y su vínculo.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo? ¿Es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen la banda?

Damna: Los dos principales compositores de la banda siempre somos Aydan y yo. Así fue también para este álbum, con la excepción de una canción escrita junto con el nuevo guitarrista Headmatt ("The Hanging Tree") y otra escrita con el violinista Lethien, una canción que se lanzará un poco más tarde. Entonces, Aydan y yo generalmente nos reunimos en persona cuando trabajamos en nuevas ideas. Esta vez tuvimos que comenzar por separado, ya que comenzamos durante el período de pandemia cuando hubo un confinamiento y tuvimos toques de queda en las noches y así sucesivamente. Así que básicamente escribimos piezas de canciones por nuestra cuenta. Damna: Diría que trabajamos muy duro durante muchos años y que siempre nos preocupamos por nuestra visión artística. Esto es algo de lo que estoy muy orgulloso. A veces tomamos malas decisiones, pero siempre tomamos cada decisión con la mayor pasión. MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?

Damna: Daremos dos conciertos de lanzamiento en Italia, uno en nuestra ciudad natal y otro en Milán. Luego tenemos algunos shows de verano y finalmente parece que tendremos una gira completa este otoño.  "We have reached a new level if we look at the compositions and the arrangements"

The Italian Folk/Pagan/Power Metal band Elvenking, founded in 1997, will be releasing their new album 'Reader Of The Runes - Rapture' on April 28 under the prestigious AFM Records label. Opportunity for Made in Meta to talk with the singer Davide "Damnagoras" Moras about their new CD.

MiM: 'Reader Of The Runes - Rapture' (AFM Records, 2023) has a sound capable of enveloping you in an epic story where it invites you to be part of it. What could you tell me about this record?

Damna: Thank you for what you say, it is indeed the intention of a storyteller to be able to involve the reader, or in this case the listener, in the story he’s trying to tell, so this means that we have somehow achieved that goal. It hasn’t been easy to find the right balance between the lyrics and the music, but I believe that in the end, we reached a certain harmony between the two and maybe that is why we feel so connected to the story and its characters while listening to the album. We also don’t have to forget that when we started this trilogy of albums we set one big rule, and that was to not come up with a lot of intros, spoken parts, or interludes despite these being concept albums because we wanted them to be musically considered as “regular” albums. So to set the tone for the story was even more difficult.

MiM: Elvenking in his long musical career has had exquisite production work on all his albums. How has the recording and music production process of this new album been?

Damna: I think we have reached a new level if we look at the compositions and the arrangements. We had a lot of time to prepare the songs and the pre-productions of this and the following album and I think that we had a good chance to take care of every single detail. This doesn’t mean that the songs are overthought, it’s just that we succeeded in reaching exactly what we had in our minds. We usually start having a clear idea of what we want and then we partially fail in coming up with the exact same thing when we finally produce the album. In my opinion, this time we even surpassed our own expectations. So I wouldn’t say this album is better than its predecessors, that is something an artist often tries to do – to get better all the time – I don’t know if this is the case, we just care about making good albums for us and for our fans if possible and I can tell you that we are very satisfied with this.

MiM: Tell me about the experience of working with Scott Atkins (Cradle of Filth, Behemoth)

Damna: We often want to try different solutions when it comes to the sound and production of our albums. We are fans of producers and sound engineers, so we are always on the lookout. With Scott it was great. As soon as we contacted him he checked our discography in order to understand what we needed in terms of sound and production. He came here to Italy to record the drums in a studio near where we live and set the guitars and bass sounds. Then he went back home and as soon as we sent him all the recorded tracks he mixed the album and captured the Elvenking sound perfectly. A great experience.

 MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs.

Damna: This is part two of the story, yes. We’ve always been fascinated by concept albums and rock operas from artists like King Diamond, W.A.S.P., Savatage, and others, and we’ve always desired to make our own concept album. We tried with “The Scythe” album back in 2007 but that was more of a theme-driven album. Just before starting the songwriting sessions of what became “Reader of the Runes – Divination”, me and Aydan had this idea and we discovered that it was definitely too thick and layered to actually fit in one album, so we decided to start this venture with a trilogy of albums. In the first part of the story, the mysterious hooded figure called “Reader of the Runes” arrives at the village, and from the inside of his house made from a tree trunk, he performs divinations on the villagers. Eight are the characters on whom we focused and eight songs on the “Divination” chapter talk about the visions that the Reader summons to each of them. In this chapter “Rapture” we will see the outcome of those predictions and the effect that each of them has on the eight characters and on their bond.

MiM: How is the creative process? Is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones that compose in the band?

Damna: The two main songwriters in the band are always Aydan and myself. So it was also for this album, with the exception of one song written together with the new guitar player Headmatt (“The Hanging Tree”) and one written with the violinist Lethien – a song that will be released a bit later. So me and Aydan usually meet in person when working on new ideas. This time we had to start separately since we began during the pandemic period when there was a lockdown and we had curfews in the evenings and so on. So we basically wrote pieces of songs on our own. Then when we finally could start seeing each other again, we started meeting every week and worked on these bits and pieces, then started working again as we used to. This process led us to write all the songs for this album and also the next.

MiM: They are a group with several years of training, with records and tours. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?

Damna: I’d say that we worked hard for many years and always cared about our artistic vision. This is something I’m very proud of. Sometimes we made bad choices, but we always made every choice with the biggest passion. We never bent to volatile rules dictated by business and we never tried to look different from who we really are. This is Elvenking, and I think that our artistic honesty and the love and respect we have for heavy metal always were and still are one of the driving forces of the band.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album? Are concerts or tours scheduled this year?

Damna: We will play two release shows in Italy, one in our hometown and one in Milano. Then we have some summer shows and finally, it seems that we’ll have a full tour this fall. Details are being discussed right now, so basically in a couple of weeks, we should come up with a full announcement. So as usual we’ll do our best to promote the album especially after it’s been so difficult for the previous one due to the pandemic.
