La banda estadounidense de Sludge Rock con sede en Chicago, These Beasts, lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Cares, Wills, Wants' el 21 de abril a través de Magnetic Eye Records. MiM: ¿Cuáles fueron los inicios de la banda? ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda y cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?
Chris: Keith (baterista) y yo habíamos sido amigos durante años antes de que empezáramos la banda. Charlábamos sobre música todo el tiempo y siempre decíamos que deberíamos formar una banda. Más tarde, mi última banda se separó y me mudé al espacio de ensayo de Keith hace unos siete años. Luego, cuando comenzamos a tocar, Todd se mudó a Chicago y lo convencí de que dejara su retiro y se uniera a la banda. El nombre surgió porque pensé que era divertido nombrarnos algo realmente arrogante cuando somos personas bastante humildes en lo que respecta a nuestras habilidades musicales.
MiM: “Cares, Wills, Wants” (Magnetic Eye Records, 2023) presenta un sonido sucio, áspero y arenoso. Cercano al Garage, Rock Psicodélico y Noise con una base Grunge media. ¿Cómo lo ves?
Chris: Sí, a todos nos gusta todo tipo de música y bandas. Así que es bastante fácil que todas esas influencias se abran paso en nuestra composición.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
Chris: Todos tenemos nuestras manos en el proceso de escritura. Empezamos improvisando ideas que uno de nosotros pueda aportar y siempre estamos grabando nuestras prácticas. Luego, cuando encontramos algo que sentimos, comenzamos a desarrollar esa idea y seguimos mostrándola en nuestro espacio de práctica hasta que lleguemos a donde queremos estar.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. A. ¿De quién era el cargo? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
Chris: El álbum fue grabado y producido por Sanford Parker. También ha hecho toneladas de otras grandes bandas. Realmente parece entender nuestra banda y el sonido que buscamos y sabe cómo llevarnos allí. Grabamos la mayor parte del álbum en Electrical Audio (el estudio de Steve Albini) y luego lo terminamos en el estudio de Sanford, Hypercube.
MiM: En casi todo el disco escucho claras influencias de Noise. ¿Cómo lo ves?
Chris: Sí, a todos nos gusta mucho el noise rock de los 90. Es en lo que crecimos. Mucho del catálogo de Amphetamine Reptile y cosas por el estilo. Jesus Lizard, Unsane, Helmet, bandas así.

MiM: Normalmente, cuando sacas un disco nuevo, lo normal después es darle vueltas. ¿Qué planes tenéis para promocionar este disco?
Chris: Estamos en conversaciones para hacer algunas giras para este álbum. Acabamos de tener un show de lanzamiento de discos para el álbum que fue genial y tuvo una gran participación y respuesta de todos.

Chicago-based American Sludge Rock band These Beasts will be releasing their new album "Cares, Wills, Wants" on April 21st on Magnetic Eye Records. Made in Metal talks with the singer and guitar player, Chris Roo, to find out everything about this album and the history of the band.
MiM: What were the beginnings of the band? How did the idea of creating the band come about and what is the concept behind the name of the band?
Chris: Keith (drummer) and I had been friends for years before we started the band. We would chat about bands all the time and always said we should start a band. Then my last band broke up and I moved into Keith’s rehearsal space about seven years ago. Then around the time we started jamming, Todd moved to Chicago and I talked him out of retirement and into joining the band. The name came about from me thinking it was funny to name ourselves something really arrogant when we are pretty humble people when it comes to our musical skills.
MiM: “Cares, Wills, Wants” (Magnetic Eye Records, 2023) features a dirty, rough, and gritty sound. Close to Garage, Psychedelic Rock, and Noise with a medium Grunge base. Is it so? How do you see it?
Chris: Yeah, we are all into all kinds of music and bands. So it’s pretty easy for all of those influences to make their way into our songwriting.
MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall on one or two people?
Chris: We all have our hands in the writing process. We start by jamming on ideas that one of us might bring in and we are always recording our practices. Then when we find something we are feeling, we start building on that idea and just keep demoing it in our practice space until we get it to where we want to be.
MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. A. Whose position was it? In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?
Chris: The album was recorded and produced by Sanford Parker. He has done tons of other great bands as well. He really seems to get our band and the sound we are going for and knows how to get us there. We tracked most of the album at Electrical Audio (Steve Albini’s studio) and then finished it at Sanford’s studio, Hypercube.
MiM: In almost the entire album, I hear clear influences from Noise. How do you see him?
Chris: Yeah, we are all into a lot of the 90’s noise rock. It’s what we grew up on. A lot of the Amphetamine Reptile catalog and things like that. Jesus Lizard, Unsane, Helmet, and bands like that.
MiM: How would you describe These Beasts' live show?
Chris: Beer soaked! Hahaha! Seriously, though, we just try to put all of our energy and effort to make it the best show that we can. Whether there are five people there or hundreds. We just want everyone to leave our show a new fan.
MiM: Normally when you put out a new record, the normal thing to do afterward is to spin it. What plans do you have to promote this record?
Chris: We are in talks about doing some touring for this album. We just had a record release show for the album that was a blast and had a great turnout and response from everyone.

Chris: I just want to thank everyone for listening and supporting us! We put a lot of ourselves into this new album, I hope that it resonates with everyone that is listening, and we hope to one day hang out and play shows in whatever part of the world everyone is in.
