"Ondfodt pertenece al black metal de los 90"

La banda finlandesa de Black Metal Ondfødt, lanzó su nuevo álbum "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" el 26 de mayo bajo el sello Black Lion Records. Made in Metal habla con el guitarrista y cantante Owe Inborr para saber todo sobre este disco y la historia de la banda. Al final de la versión en inglés, puedes escuchar el disco completo.
MiM: ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar la banda? ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?
OF: La idea comenzó alrededor de 2012 cuando comencé a aprender a tocar los instrumentos un poco mejor y siempre he sido un gran fanático de la música rock y metal. Llamado "Ondfodt" significa "Evil Born" o "Born Evil" en inglés y proviene de un sueco muy antiguo. Mi amigo Mikael Kåll y yo estábamos metidos en el Black n' Roll y el Black Metal en general y decidimos formar la banda hace casi exactamente 10 años. 7 de abril de 2013 para ser precisos. Ya tenía el nombre, sabía que algún día formaría una banda de black metal llamada "Ondfodt". Actualmente, soy el único miembro original de la banda. Hoy en día tenemos miembros muy talentosos en la banda que son apasionados por esta música y estamos listos para tocar en vivo y hacer una gira con el nuevo disco si alguien está interesado en contratarnos.
MiM: "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" (Black Lion Records, 2023) es un álbum rápido, oscuro y agresivo. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?OF: Tengo mi propio estudio "Wolfthrone Studios" que comencé el mismo año que la banda. Así que siempre he sido el que escribió y produjo, grabó y mezcló/masterizó todo el material que ha lanzado Ondfodt. Básicamente escribí "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" durante la primavera y el verano de 2022 y, en medio del proceso, Tommi Tuhkala se unió a la banda como baterista permanente y escribió cómo se grabaría la batería para todo el álbum. Justo antes de comenzar a grabar el nuevo disco, tuvimos un ensayo con la banda para entrenar a nuestro entonces bajista invitado para la banda, durante ese proceso nos dimos cuenta de que él (Joel Notkonen) encajaba muy bien con la banda y que es un músico increíble y bajista, así que se unió a la banda y escribió todas las pistas de bajo para todo el disco y grabó su parte junto con las sesiones de batería. El instrumento principal de Joel es la guitarra y actualmente es el guitarrista principal de la banda y Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns (Finntroll & ...And Oceans) es el bajista invitado de la banda cuando tocamos en vivo.
Después de que terminamos la batería y el bajo, grabé mi guitarra y la de Dario y luego agregué las voces. Cuando todo esto estuvo hecho, el invitado del álbum Jacob Björnfot grabó sus solos de guitarra y Mathias Lillmåns su voz para la canción "Where Death Roams".
En esa canción, toda la banda cantó más de 120 pistas de voces corales para lograr una atmósfera lo más grande y épica posible.
Cuando terminé todo esto, mezclé el álbum durante un mes y, en la etapa final, Tommi y Joel se unieron al estudio para hacer los detalles finales antes de que masterizara el álbum y enviara las pistas a nuestro sello "Black Lion Records".
MiM: Al ser una banda de Black Metal, es una sorpresa escuchar un álbum con una gama de sonidos muy diversa. La producción es exquisita. ¿Cómo lo ves?
OF: Gracias por las bonitas palabras. Ondfodt pertenece al black metal de los 90 y siempre nos han gustado los sonidos de batería extremadamente grandes y los sonidos vocales de otro mundo. Me he desarrollado mucho como mezclador de sonido, ya que durante estos 10 años he mezclado más de 60 discos y he trabajado como técnico de directo durante muchos años. Así que he ganado una buena experiencia para producir un álbum tan bien producido, pero todavía tengo un poco de suciedad en las esquinas para no quitarle la crudeza a la imagen del sonido. Puedo hacer que suene más o menos como lo escuché en mi cabeza incluso antes de que empezáramos a grabar.
MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿"Det Österbottniska Mörkret" es un álbum conceptual?
OF: Puede que no quiera llamarlo un álbum conceptual, pero definitivamente pasamos mucho tiempo trabajando en cómo comienzan y terminan las canciones para hacer que el álbum fluya lo mejor posible. Queríamos que el álbum en su conjunto se sintiera como un viaje a través de todo lo que ofrecemos en este álbum en lugar de canción tras canción. Nuestro baterista Tommi, que también es muy bueno haciendo música de terror atmosférica, ayudó a hacer todo el ambiente entre las canciones y la canción de introducción. En la última canción del disco, traje algunos micrófonos y salí y grabé el piano y luego agregué las cuerdas y los sintetizadores en el estudio.
MiM: Excelente diseño de portada. ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del diseño en sí?
OF: René Thuys es un artista muy talentoso. Hizo tanto el álbum "Norden" como el arte de este nuevo disco. Las letras tienen mucho que ver con viejas leyendas y viejas historias que nuestros antepasados han contado durante generaciones sobre Ostrobotnia, de donde venimos. Tuvimos quemas de brujas aquí donde vivo y cultos religiosos y otras cosas malas. El álbum tiene un lado muy oscuro, casi un poco aterrador teniendo en cuenta que contiene muchas verdades aunque ugh muchas de las historias son parcialmente inventadas. Los espíritus malignos de los que hemos oído hablar durante varias generaciones que viven aquí, nunca se sabe dónde comenzaron los rumores, son inventados o se basan en algún tipo de verdad.
De todos modos, creo que René creó una imagen y un sentimiento que refleja exactamente de qué se trata el álbum.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas en este nuevo año?
OF: Hemos practicado extensamente con la banda y estamos más listos que nunca para tocar en vivo. Estamos a la espera de que aparezca el interés entre los que reservan bandas para tocar en vivo, porque estamos listos para empezar a tocar y promocionar el nuevo disco. Festivales, giras, estamos abiertos a todo.

Finnish Black Metal band Ondfødt, released their new album "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" on May 26 under the Black Lion Records label. Made in Metal talks with the guitar and vocalist Owe Inborr to find out everything about this album and the history of the band
MiM: How did the idea of forming the band come about? How were those beginnings? What is the concept behind the name of the band?
OF: The idea started sometime around 2012 when I had started to learn to play the instruments a little better and I have always been a big fan of rock and metal music. Named "Ondfodt" means "Evil Born" or "Born Evil" in English and comes from very old-fashioned Swedish. Me and my friend Mikael Kåll were both into Black n' Roll and Black Metal in general and we decided to start the band almost exactly 10 years ago. April 7th, 2013 to be precise. I already had the name, I knew that one day I will start a black metal band called "Ondfodt". Currently, I am the only original member of the band. Nowadays we have very talented members of the band who are passionate about this music and we are ready to play live and tour with the new record if anyone is interested in booking us.
MiM: "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" (Black Lion Records, 2023) is a fast, dark, and aggressive album. What can you tell me about this record? How was the recording and production process? Who was in charge of the production?OF: I have my own studio "Wolfthrone Studios" which I started the same year as the band. So I have always been the one who wrote and produced, recorded and mixed/mastered all the material that Ondfodt has released. "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" I basically wrote throughout the spring and summer of 2022 and in the middle of the process Tommi Tuhkala joined the band as the permanent drummer and he wrote how the drums would be recorded for the whole album. Just before we started recording the new record we had a rehearsal with the band to train our then guest bassist for the band, during that process we realized that he (Joel Notkonen) fit in very well with the band and he is an incredible musician and bass player so he joined the band and wrote all the bass tracks for the entire record and recorded his part in conjunction with the drum sessions. Joel's main instrument is the guitar and is nowadays the lead guitarist in the band and Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns (Finntroll & ...And Oceans) is the band's guest bass player when we perform live.
After we finished the drums and bass I recorded mine and Dario's guitars and after that, I added the vocals. When all this was done, the guest for the album Jacob Björnfot recorded his guitar solos and Mathias Lillmåns his vocals for the song "Where Death Roams". In that song, the whole band belted in over 120 tracks of choral vocals to get as big and epic an atmosphere as possible.
When all this was done I mixed the album for a month and at the final stage Tommi and Joel joined the studio to do the final details before I then mastered the album and sent the tracks to our label "Black Lion Records".
MiM: Being a Black Metal band it is a surprise to hear an album with a very diverse range of sounds. The production is exquisite. How do you see it?
OF: Thanks for the nice words. Ondfodt belongs in 90s black metal and we have always been into extremely big drum sounds and otherworldly vocal sounds. I have developed a lot as a sound mixer, as during these 10 years I have mixed over 60 albums and worked as a live technician for many years. So I have gained good experience to produce such a well-produced album but still have a little dirt in the corners so as not to take away the rawness of the sound image. I can make it sound more or less like I heard it in my head before we even started recording.
MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. "Det Österbottniska Mörkret" is a concept album?
OF: I might not want to call it a concept album, but we definitely spent a lot of time working on how the songs start and end to make the album flow together as smoothly as possible. We wanted the album as a whole to feel like a journey through everything we offer in this album instead of song after song. Our drummer Tommi who is also very good at making atmospheric horror music helped to do all the ambience between the songs and the intro song. In the last song on the record, I brought some microphones and I went off and recorded the piano and then I added the strings and synths in the studio.
MiM: Excellent cover design. What is the concept behind the design itself?
OF: René Thuys is a very talented artist. He did both the album "Norden" and the artwork for this new record. The lyrics are very much about old legends and old stories that our ancestors have told for generations about Ostrobothnia, where we come from. We had witch burnings here where I live and religious cults and other evil things. The album has a very dark side, almost a little scary considering that it contains many truths even though many of the stories are partly made up. The evil spirits we have heard about for several generations that live here, you never know where the rumors started, are they made up or are they based on some kind of truth.
Anyway, I think René created an image and feeling that reflects exactly what the album is about.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?
OF: We have practiced extensively with the band and are more ready than ever to play live. We are waiting for the interest to appear among those who book bands to play live because we are ready to start playing and promoting the new album. Festivals, tours, we are open to everything.

OF: Thanks to everyone who has followed us and helped us over the years. We hope that we will get to play for you eventually. As the band turns 10 years old, we have prepared a gift for those of you who have followed us since the beginning.
