Ken Tamplin, es bien conocido por su gran rango vocal y ser un entrenador vocal de renombre mundial. Tamplin obtuvo 4 premios GMA Dove (los 'Gospel Grammy') y ha recibido 12 nominaciones. MiM: Ken, cuéntame sobre tus inicios como cantante, ¿cómo tomaste conciencia de la enorme voz que tienes?

KT: Gracias Raúl, el placer es todo mío. En realidad, no comencé como cantante. Empecé como guitarrista. Pero rápidamente me di cuenta de que era muy difícil depender de los cantantes, así que decidí intentarlo yo mismo. Así que trabajé muy duro con muchos entrenadores vocales conocidos que fueron muy costosos durante muchos años para desarrollar mi voz hasta convertirla en lo que se ha convertido.  MiM: Pocos músicos con carreras impresionantes dedican tiempo a impartir clases. En tu caso, tienes una Academia donde ayudas a muchas personas a lograr su sueño, así como un canal de YouTube seguido por millones de personas, donde les das la oportunidad de cantar temas clásicos de lo mejor del repertorio Pop y Hard Rock. ¿Crees que es una forma que tienes de transmitir tus experiencias a las nuevas generaciones?

KT: Sí, definitivamente siento que puedo tomar toda la información de toda una vida sobre la grabación de 40 discos, junto con más de 25 años de giras, y poner esa información a disposición de las personas que quieran tomarse en serio su canto y su musicalidad.

MiM: ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

KT: Surgió cuando tenía hijos. Me di cuenta de que no quería hacer una gira y dejarlos solos en casa durante meses y meses seguidos. Mi padre me dejó cuando yo tenía doce años, fue uno de los momentos más difíciles de mi vida y lo último que quería hacer era trasladar eso a mis hijos.

Así que construí un estudio de grabación para poder quedarme en casa con ellos mientras hacía música para cine y televisión. Pero también ayudé a muchos miembros de la banda a hacer que su voz fuera muy fuerte mientras estaban de gira y me di cuenta de que se trataba de una habilidad muy especializada. Entonces decidí iniciar un canal de YouTube basado en la enseñanza del canto, lo cual era información muy difícil de conseguir. Esto es válido para el piano, el bajo, la batería o literalmente cualquier disciplina. Así que decidí iniciar un canal de YouTube para abordar las canciones más difíciles de cantar en toda la historia del rock y el pop y demostrar que lo que enseño es legítimo.

MiM: ¿Cuáles serían los pasos a seguir para alguien que esté interesado en recibir clases de canto contigo?

KT: Yo diría que comience con los tutoriales de canto gratuitos en YouTube y vea si nuestras personalidades encajan entre sí. Entonces si te gusta lo que ves en YouTube, que son pequeñas instantáneas y fragmentos de lo que tengo en mi curso de canto, entonces hazte con mi curso de canto. No vayas directamente a la instrucción personal; primero debes dedicar tiempo al curso para familiarizarte con el método que enseño y los diferentes idiomas que uso, de modo que si decides tomar una lección personal conmigo, entonces tendrás una gran ventaja con toda la información por adelantado antes de comenzar.

MiM: Mucha gente hace el curso de canto. Marc Hudson de DragonForce sería un ejemplo perfecto de ello.

KT: ¡Simplemente hizo mi curso de canto y luego audicionó para DragonForce y consiguió el puesto.

MiM: El repertorio de canciones que utilizas en tus clases es de amplio espectro. ¿Cuáles son esas canciones difíciles y complicadas de cantar para Ken Tamplin?

KT: Algunas de las canciones más difíciles de cantar tienen un rango alto distorsionado. Puede ser muy difícil negociar para no cantar demasiado, por lo que es necesario tensar el cuerpo, el pecho, el cuello y la garganta e inhibir la capacidad de lograr claridad y longevidad en el rango vocal.

MiM: Se dice que “She's Gone” de Steelheart es una de las más difíciles. ¿Cuál es tu criterio?

KT: “She's Gone” es definitivamente una canción difícil de cantar, pero no hay duda al respecto; Encuentro que ver una canción de Dio de rango alto o algo que tenga mucho ruido en la voz media superior es mucho más difícil. Al cantar una canción de Steelheart licomo “She's Gone” o “I'll Never Let You Go”, una vez que hayas pasado “Segundo Passagio” y puedas afinar tu camino hacia arriba y usar tu voz principal para confiar en lugar de tratar de levantar el pecho con un sonido que sea alto, descubrirás que puedes interpretar esta canción bastante bien. MiM: Te menciono tres cantantes y ya me cuentas lo que piensas: Dino Jelusick, Ronnie Romero y Johnny Gioeli.

KT: He tenido muchas conversaciones con Dino y literalmente creo que es una de las mejores voces de rock del mundo y tal vez de toda la historia del rock. Es una pena que no se le estén dando las mismas oportunidades que a muchos talentos similares al suyo en los años 70, 80 y principios de los 90. Pero está abriendo camino y está haciendo un gran trabajo en ello y no sólo es un gran cantante sino también un músico fenomenal.

Recientemente tuve una sesión de Skype con Ronnie Romero y también tiene una lista de libros fenomenal. De hecho, le estaba dando a su esposa lecciones de libros con él en línea con nosotros. Y una cosa de la que me di cuenta acerca de Ronnie fue que descubrió cómo usar la compresión global, que es el arte de mantener la garganta abierta, no cantar demasiado y ser capaz de obtener una buena distorsión a un nivel bajo (volumen) para que pueda tener sonidos increíbles, resistencia y alcance. Ken Tamplin, is well known for his great vocal range and a world-renowned vocal coach. Tamplin garnered 4 GMA Dove Awards (the 'Gospel Grammys') and has received 12 nominations. He has his own singing academy, Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, where he teaches distance singing courses, with his YouTube channel with more than 1,000,000 subscribers. MiM: Ken, tell me about your beginnings as a singer, how did you become aware of the enormous voice you have?

KT: Thank you Raúl, the pleasure is all mine. I actually did not start out as a singer. I started out as a guitar player. But I quickly realized it was very difficult to depend on singers, so I decided to give it a try myself. So I worked very hard with many well-known vocal coaches who were very expensive over many years to develop my voice into what it has become. There was no easy road and there were many sacrifices made. But in the end, for me, it was worth it.

MiM: Few musicians with impressive careers spend time teaching classes. In your case, you have an Academy where you help many people achieve their dreams, as well as a YouTube channel followed by millions of people, where you give them the opportunity to sing classic songs from the best of the Pop and Hard Rock repertoire. Do you think that it is a way that you have to transmit your experiences to the new generations? 

KT: Yes, I most definitely feel like I am able to take a lifetime of information of recording 40 records, along with 25+ years of touring, and make that information available to people who want to get serious about their singing and their musicianship.

MiM: How did the idea come about?

KT: It came about when I had kids. I realized I did not want to tour and leave them home alone for months and months at a time. My father left me when I was twelve years old it was one of the most difficult times of my life and the last thing I wanted to do was translate that to my children.

So I built a recording studio so I could stay home with him while doing music for film and television. But I had also helped many band members make their voice is very strong while touring and realized that this was a very specialized ability. So I decided to start a YouTube channel based on teaching singing which was very hard information to come by. Anyone can raise their hand and claim to be a vocal coach but few people can actually claim the kind of experience that I have and as we say at Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, The Proof Is In The Singing! Few vocal coaches that I see sing well and they rarely show any students singing either. This should be a big warning to everybody. Would you go to a guitar teacher who could not physically show you how to play but just told you how to do it? And showed none of his or her students doing it either? This is true for piano, bass, drums, or literally any discipline.

So I decided to start a YouTube channel to take on the most difficult songs to sing in all of rock and pop history to prove that what I teach is legitimate. 

MiM: What would be the steps to follow for someone who is interested in receiving singing classes with you?

KT: I would say start with the free singing tutorials on YouTube and see if our personalities are a fit for each other. Then if you like what you see on YouTube, which are small snapshots and sound bites of what I have in my singing course, then get my singing course. Don't go straight to personal instruction you want to spend time with the course first to familiarize yourself with the method that I teach and the different languages that I use so that if you do decide to take a personal lesson with me then you will have a great advantage with all of the information in advance before we get started.

MiM: Many people do the singing course. Marc Hudson from DragonForce would be a perfect example of that.

KT: He simply did my singing course and then auditioned for DragonForce and got the gig!

MiM: The repertoire of songs that you use in your classes is of a wide spectrum. What are those difficult and complicated songs to sing for Ken Tamplin? 

KT: Some of the most difficult songs to sing our songs they have high-range distorted belting. It can be very difficult to negotiate not over singing so has to at the body chest neck and throat tense up and inhibit the ability for vocal range stamina clarity and longevity.

MiM: Steelheart’s “She's Gone” is said to be one of the most difficult. What are your criteria? 

KT: “She's Gone” is definitely a difficult song to sing there's no doubt about it However; I find that seeing a high-range Dio song or something that has a lot of belting in the upper middle voice is much more difficult. When singing a Steelheart song like “She's Gone” or “I'll Never Let You Go”, once you get past “Segundo Passagio” and you can finesse your way up and use your head voice to rely on rather than trying to pull chest up into a sound that high, you find you can get through this song fairly OK. Whereas when you listen to a lot of the Dio stuff or Ray Gillen, this can be quite a bit more challenging to not over-sing!

MiM: I mention three singers and you tell me what you think: Dino Jelusick, Ronnie Romero, and Johnny Gioeli.

KT: I've had many conversations with Dino and I literally think he's one of the greatest rock voices in the world and maybe in all of rock history. It's a shame that he's not being given the same chance as a lot of talent similar to his in the 70s 80s and early 90s. But he is cutting a path and he's doing a great job at it and he's not only a great singer but a phenomenal musician.

I recently had a Skype session with Ronnie Romero and he is on a phenomenal book list as well. In fact, I was giving his wife book lessons with him online with us. One thing I realized about Ronnie as he has figured out how to use global compression which is the art of keeping your throat open, not singing and being able to get good distortion at a low level (volume) so that he can have incredible stamina and range. Once I brought this to his attention he said that I articulated what he does but wasn't able to explain himself. This is precisely what we teach at Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy for rock vocalists.

I also appreciate Johnny Gioeli's voice as well. We met many years ago while working on the Joey Tafolla album. He is an extremely talented vocalist as well.

MiM: Ken, you are a singing teacher with several years and an impressive career! Looking back, how would you rate your work in all these years?

KT: I am very proud of the work that I've done over the years. Whether it was being a second guitar player in the background vocalist to Rob Rock in my first professional band, to my band Shout, to the stuff I did with Lanny Cordola in Magdallan, to all of my solo records, all of the music I did in film and television, I really feel like I did my best to contribute to the world of art in the rock music scene and I sincerely tried my best to do it with integrity.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

KT: I just want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years. I hope I made music that was inspirational for you and hope to make you a better musician or music enthusiast appreciator. I'm also hoping that the artists I'm working with on my YouTube channel to take their singing to the next level and raise the bar for great singing.
