Las leyendas griegas del Heavy/Power Metal Firewind, lideradas por el talentoso guitarrista Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne, Arch Enemy, Dream Evil), lanzaron su álbum en vivo titulado 'Still Raging - 20th Anniversary Show'. El lanzamiento, compuesto por un Blu-ray y dos CD, vio la luz el 1 de septiembre a través de AFM Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal converse con Gus G. para conocer todos los detalles de este lanzamiento.

MiM: Gus, sostener una banda durante 20 años en el difícil mundo de la industria musical es difícil. ¿Cómo lo has conseguido? ¿Cuál crees que es el secreto?

GG: No estoy seguro de que haya un secreto. Siempre he hecho lo mío, tal vez sea eso. Soy una persona muy persistente, así que supongo que necesitas un par de cosas como mantenerte motivado, fijarte metas para el futuro y mucha paciencia y perseverancia.

MiM: En todos estos años es inevitable que una banda tenga buenos y malos momentos. ¿Cuáles que recuerdas han sido para ti?

GG: Sólo me quedo con las cosas buenas al final del día. Realmente no me detengo en los momentos difíciles que pasamos, son obstáculos en un momento determinado y los superamos y salimos adelante.

MiM: En Firewind ha habido diferentes cambios de formación en todos estos años. Músicos como Henning Basse, Mark Cross, Michael Ehré entre otros. ¿Por qué se han ido y cómo es tu relación con ellos actualmente?

GG: Generalmente los cambios ocurren cuando algunas personas quieren hacer otras cosas o hay algún tipo de desacuerdo dentro de la banda. Como mencionaste a estos tres, Michael tuvo una oferta para unirse a Gamma Ray y, por supuesto, le dimos nuestra bendición, ya que claramente era una buena oportunidad para él. En lo que respecta a Mark y Henning, simplemente no funcionó por varias y diferentes razones que no voy a detallar aquí, porque no tiene sentido. Ambos son músicos increíbles. Todavía hablo con Henning de vez en cuando y vi que recientemente hizo una reunión de Metalium, lo cual es genial para él.

MiM: ¿Cómo recuerdas esos inicios de la banda?

GG: Bueno, Firewind tenía una puerta giratoria de miembros; básicamente comenzamos como una banda de intercambio de archivos mp3. Y varios amigos me ayudaron a hacer mis demos y, finalmente, los primeros álbumes. Era bastante poco ortodoxo tener una banda como esta hace veinte años, hoy en día es normal con la tecnología. Los primeros años fueron más temerarios y muy puros, todavía estaba descubriendo cómo hacer muchas cosas. Cuando empezamos no éramos realmente una gran banda en vivo, hasta que empezamos a hacer giras sin parar, pero los primeros años fueron divertidos.

MiM: “Still Raging - 20th Anniversary Show” (AFM Records, 2023) es un regalo para todos los fans de la banda y al mismo tiempo es una celebración para los músicos. Sonido sorprendente, fuerza y energía caracterizan este directo. ¿Cómo recuerdas estos conciertos? ¿Cómo fue el proceso para elegir la lista de canciones, clásicos y temas imprescindibles que todos los fans de la banda disfrutaron y disfrutarán el día del lanzamiento?

GG: ¡Gracias! Estos espectáculos fueron para nosotros un punto culminante y, por supuesto, un pequeño hito. Regresar a nuestra patria veinte años después y especialmente después de dos años de encierros, fue un momento increíble y creo que algo emocionante para todos. Elegir las canciones fue difícil: queríamos tocar lo mejor, por supuesto, pero también queríamos tocar canciones del álbum homónimo que salió durante la pandemia y no tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer una gira adecuada.

MiM: Los dos últimos álbumes de la banda fueron “Immortals” (2017) y “Firewind” (2020), ¿qué nos puedes contar sobre ellos?

GG: Personalmente creo que estos son dos de los mejores álbumes de la carrera de la banda desde la era de “Premonition”. “Immortals” fue un muy buen álbum de regreso después de una pausa de cinco años en la grabación. Teníamos un concepto fuerte, basado en la historia griega antigua y creo que a los fans les encantó entonces, como les encanta ahora. Canciones como “Oda a Leónidas” se han convertido en elementos básicos de los shows en vivo de la banda. Creo que lo mismo ocurre con el álbum “Firewind”. Sé que mucha gente casi se dio por vencida con nosotros después de dos cambios consecutivos en la alineación, pero logramos un jonrón con Herbie a bordo. Logramos mantenernos fuertes, unidos y canciones como “Rising Fire” solidificaron la reputación de la banda y llevaron la antorcha hacia nuestro nuevo futuro.

MiM: ¿Cuándo podrán los fans de la banda escuchar material nuevo?

GG: El nuevo álbum está listo y se lanzará a principios de 2024. Así que tengan paciencia un par de meses más.

MiM: En este álbum en vivo se nota mucho lo bien que Herbie Langhans está en la voz, se nota que estás en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo crees que logra mantener esa fuerza en su voz a pesar de los años? ¿Cómo lo conociste y cómo surgió la idea de unirte a la banda?

GG: Herbie es un gran cantante y líder. Realmente vive para esto y su historia es interesante. Es un gran ejemplo de un hombre que hizo música como algo secundario durante 20 años y cuando tenía 40 años tomó la decisión de dejar su trabajo diario y dedicarse a la música a tiempo completo, ¡y lo logró! No conozco a mucha gente que tenga las pelotas de hacer tal cambio. Realmente me gusta su forma de pensar, aporta mucha positividad a la banda, los fans lo aman y ¡nos llevamos muy bien!

MiM: Sabemos que Ozzy Osbourne está pasando por un mal momento en lo que a salud se refiere, ya que hace aproximadamente un mes tuvo que cancelar su aparición en el festival Power Trip y ser reemplazado por Judas Priest por no estar cien por ciento recuperado. ¿Te has comunicado con él?

GG: No, hace tiempo que no estoy en contacto con él. Realmente deseo que se sienta mejor pronto y sólo quiero que vuelva a tocar en shows, si eso es lo que quiere hacer. Porque realmente Ozzy no tiene nada que demostrarle a nadie, él es nuestro padre del Metal.

MiM: Tenéis una banda con varios años de formación con discos y muchos conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?

GG: Creo que Firewind es una banda que apuesta por lanzamientos de álbumes de calidad en todos los sentidos. No creo que alguna vez hayamos sacado un mal álbum. Claro, algunos son mejores que otros. Pero siempre hemos mantenido un cierto nivel. Y somos una banda de gira, siempre hemos tenido la reputación de ser una banda asesina en vivo. En esta nueva década hay una nueva generación de bandas que dependen en gran medida de trucos y cosplay, pero estoy orgulloso y agradecido de que todavía podamos estar aquí y publicar álbumes de calidad que aún resuenan entre los fans.

MiM: Una vez que el álbum esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿qué planes tienes para promocionarlo?

GG: Estamos planeando una nueva gira para 2024, ¡las fechas se anunciarán pronto! Y sí, tocaremos en España después de este álbum en vivo, ¡preparaos para los nuevos singles de nuestro próximo lanzamiento de estudio que debería salir la próxima primavera!

Greek Heavy/Power Metal Legends Firewind, fronted by the talented guitarist Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne, Arch Enemy, Dream Evil), will release their next live album titled "Still Raging - 20th Anniversary Show". The release, consisting of a Blu-ray and two CDs, will be available on September 1 through the prestigious AFM Records label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to interview Gus G. to find out all the details of this release.

MiM: Gus, sustaining a band for 20 years in the very difficult world of the music industry is complicated. How have you achieved it? What do you think is the secret?

GG: I’m not sure that there is a secret. I’ve always done my thing, maybe that’s it. I’m a very persistent person, so I guess you need a couple of things like staying motivated, setting goals for the future, and a lot of patience and persistence.

MiM: In all these years it is inevitable that a band has good and bad moments. Which ones that you remember have been for you?

GG: I only keep the good things at the end of the day. I don’t really dwell on the hard times we went through, they’re obstacles at a particular time and we overcome them and move forward. 

MiM: In Firewind there have been different lineup changes in all these years. Musicians like Henning Basse, Mark Cross, and Michael Ehré among others. Why have they left and how is your relationship with them currently?

GG: Usually changes happen when some people want to do other things, or there is some sort of disagreement within the band. Since you mentioned these three – Michael had an offer to join Gamma Ray and of course, we gave him our blessing as that was clearly a good opportunity for him. In regards to Mark & Henning, it just wasn’t working out for several different reasons which I’m not going to detail here, cause it’s no point. They’re both amazing musicians. I still talk to Henning every now and then and I saw he’s recently doing a Metalium reunion which is cool for him.

MiM: How do you remember those beginnings of the band? 

GG: Well, Firewind had a revolving door of members – basically we started as an mp3 file-exchanging band. And several friends would help me do my demos and eventually the first few albums. It was quite unorthodox to have a band like this twenty years ago, nowadays it’s normal with technology. The early years were more reckless and very pure, I was still discovering how to do a lot of things. When we started out we weren’t really a great live band until we started touring non-stop, but the early years were fun.

MiM: “Still Raging - 20th Anniversary Show” (AFM Records, 2023) is a gift for all the fans of the band, and at the same time it is a celebration for the musicians. Surprising sound, strength, and energy characterize this life. How do you remember these concerts? How was the process to choose the list of songs, classics, and essential songs that all the fans of the band enjoyed and will enjoy on the day of the release?

GG: Thanks! These shows were a highlight for us and of course a small milestone. Returning to our homeland twenty years later, especially after two years of lockdowns, was an amazing moment and I think something exciting for everyone. Choosing the songs was tough – we wanted to play a best of course, but we also wanted to play songs from the self-titled album which came out during the pandemic and we didn’t have a chance to properly tour for. 

MiM: The last two albums of the band were “Immortals” (2017) and “Firewind” (2020), what can you tell us about them?

GG: I personally think these are two of the best albums of the band’s career since the “Premonition” era. “Immortals” was a very good comeback album after a five-year recording hiatus. We had a strong concept, based on ancient Greek history and I think the fans loved it then, as they do now. Songs like “Ode to Leonidas” have become staples for the band’s live shows. I think the same goes for “Firewind” album. I know a lot of people almost gave up on us after two consecutive lineup changes, but we hit a home run w/ Herbie on board. We managed to stay strong and united, and songs like “Rising Fire” solidified the band’s reputation and carried the torch into our new future.

MiM: When will the band's fans be able to hear new material?

GG: The new album is ready and will be released in early 2024. So, please be patient for a couple of more months. 

MiM: On this live album it is very noticeable how well Herbie Langhans is on vocals, it shows that you are in excellent condition. How do you think he manages to maintain that strength in his voice despite the years? How did you meet him and how did the idea of joining the band come about?

GG: Herbie is a great singer and frontman. He really lives for this and his story is interesting. He’s a great example of a man who did music as a side thing for 20 years and in his 40s he made the decision to quit his day job and do music full time and he succeeded at it! I don’t know many people who have the balls to make such a change. I really like his mindset, he brings a lot of positivity to the band, the fans love him and we get along excellent!

MiM: We know that Ozzy Osbourne is going through a bad time as far as health is concerned, since about a month ago he had to cancel his appearance at the Power Trip festival and be replaced by Judas Priest for not being one hundred percent recovered. Have you communicated with him?

GG: No I haven’t been in touch with him for a while. I really hope he feels better soon and I only want him to play shows again if that’s what he wants to do. Cause really Ozzy has got nothing to prove to anyone, he’s our Metal father. 

MiM: You have a band with several years of training with records and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?

GG: I think Firewind is a band that stands for quality album releases all the way. I don’t think we’ve ever put out a bad album. Sure, some are better than others. But we’ve always maintained a certain level. And we’re a touring band, we’ve always had a reputation for being a killer live band. In this new decade, there’s a new generation of bands that rely heavily on gimmicks and cosplay, but I’m proud and grateful that we can still stand here and put out quality albums that still resonate with fans. 

MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what plans do you have to promote it? 

GG: We’re planning a new tour for 2024, dates will be announced soon! And yes, we will play in Spain after this live album, Be prepared for new singles from our next studio release which should come out next Spring!
