“Flowers of Death” es el cuarto álbum de estudio del trío de fumetas psiquiátricos Humulus, con sede en Bérgamo, Italia, que se lanzó en septiembre en vinilo y digital. H: Humulus Lupulus es el nombre botánico del lúpulo, el ingrediente de la cerveza. Nos encanta la cerveza y en el pasado también elaboramos una Black IPA artesanal en colaboración con Elav Brewery. Humulus encaja perfectamente.
MiM: “Flowers of Death” (Go Down Records, 2023) es un trabajo que viene con la contrapartida de presentar una nueva formación. ¿Es eso así? ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto? ¿De qué trata el álbum?
H: El nuevo LP es el primero con Thomas Mascheroni en guitarra y voz. Se unió a la banda hace un año y nuestro LP anterior se lanzó en febrero de 2020. Inmediatamente, comenzamos a trabajar en material nuevo porque necesitábamos salir pronto con algo nuevo para tocar y empezar a divertirnos de nuevo. Así que no es un álbum conceptual y no nos inspiramos en algo en particular. Simplemente, empezamos a jugar mucho juntos para entender si había buen humor entre nosotros. Más de ocho canciones y muchas otras ideas salieron más rápido de lo que esperábamos, y lo que para nosotros fue lo mejor al final fue grabado, y aquí estamos con “Flowers Of Death”.
MiM: “Flowers Of Death” presenta a Thomas Mascheroni en nueva voz y guitarra. La conexión de Mascheroni con la misma sección rítmica funcionó a la perfección para meternos en esa neblina multicolor, llevando expresiones como la propia canción principal y ese sentimiento un poco más retro que prevalece en el riff de guitarra, como “Shimmer Haze”. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción del álbum?
H: Hicimos muchas cosas que nunca habíamos hecho antes para los discos anteriores. En primer lugar, Stefan Koglek de Color Haze nos ayudó como productores durante la parte de composición. Cuando llegamos al estudio grabamos batería y bajo sin guitarra. Y después guitarras y voces. Estamos acostumbrados a tocar juntos en vivo y también en el estudio, así que fue realmente diferente pero definitivamente mejor para el sonido.
MiM: Conocemos la devoción de la banda por las sesiones improvisadas. ¿Es esto algo que guardarás como sello en todos tus materiales de grabación?
H: Sí, pero ahora más que nunca. Creemos que el pegamento que mantiene sólida a la banda tiene un tipo de confianza entre cada miembro que podemos mantener funcional solo a través de sesiones improvisadas e improvisación. Obviamente, después trabajamos profundamente en composición y producción, pero todo salió bien sin interferencias.
MiM: Este álbum cuenta con músicos invitados. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
H: Para nosotros, una de las cosas más importantes para una banda en la fase de composición es tener a alguien externo que dé consejos u opiniones sobre el nuevo material. Decidimos por primera vez hacer esto profesionalmente y le pedimos a Stefan de Color Haze que nos siguiera en la parte de composición del disco. Y espontáneamente decidimos pedirle que nos acompañara en la guitarra para tocar una canción. No es la primera vez que un invitado se une a nosotros para una canción (Boris de Monkey3 tocó el solo de guitarra en nuestra canción “Anachronaut” en nuestro LP “Reverfully Heading Into Nowhere”). Pero es la primera vez que alguien sigue nuestro trabajo de composición.
MiM: Cuando vas a componer material nuevo, ¿cuáles son las influencias más directas?
H: Definitivamente, la música que escuchamos en ese momento y también la idea de hacer algo diferente a lo que hacíamos antes sin salirnos completamente del “estilo Humulus”
MiM: Normalmente, cuando lanzas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es salir de gira. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
H: Ya hemos realizado algunos conciertos en Italia y Alemania, y está previsto un viaje más grande para la primavera de 2024.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.
H: Estamos contentos con este disco; Después de más de 10 años de existencia y de muchos problemas, ahora nos sentimos nuevamente como una verdadera banda a la que le encanta hacer canciones y conciertos y divertirse con la gente. “Flowers of Death”, is the fourth studio album by Bergamo, Italy-based psych stoner trio Humulus which was released in September on vinyl and digital. The CD version of the album will arrive on November 10 via Go Down Records. Made in Metal talks to the band to find out everything about this release.MiM: According to Wikipedia, Humulus means: a small genus of plants in the family Cannabaceae, native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Does this have anything to do with the name of the band? What is the concept behind the band name?
H: Humulus Lupulus is the botanical name of hops, the beer ingredient. We love beer, and we also brewed one craft Black IPA in collaboration with Elav Brewery in the past. Humulus fits perfectly.
MiM: "Flowers of Death" (Go Down Records, 2023) is a work that comes with the counterpart of presenting a new lineup. Is that so? What can you tell me about it? What is the album about?
H: The new LP is the first with Thomas Mascheroni on guitar and voice. He joined the band one year ago, and our previous LP was released in February 2020. We immediately started to work on new material because we needed to be out soon with something new to play gigs and start having fun again. So it's not a concept album, and we were not inspired by something in particular. We simply started to play together a lot to understand whether there was a good mood between us. More than eight songs and many other ideas came out faster than we expected, and what for us was the best at the end was recorded, and so here we are with "Flowers Of Death".
MiM: "Flowers Of Death" features Thomas Mascheroni on new vocals and guitar. The Mascheroni connection to the same rhythm section worked perfectly to get us into that multicolored haze, carrying expressions like the main song itself and that slightly more retro feel prevailing in the guitar riff, such as “Shimmer Haze”. How was the recording and production process for the album?
H: We did many things that we had never done before for the previous records. Firstly, Stefan Koglek from Color Haze helped us as producers during the composing part. When we arrived in the studio, we recorded drums and bass without guitar. And after guitars and voices. We're used to playing live together and also in the studio, so it was really different but definitely better for the sound.
MiM: We know the band's devotion to jam sessions. Is this something that you will keep as a stamp on all your recording materials?
H: Yes, but now more than ever. We think that the glue that keeps the band solid has a kind of confidence between each member that we can keep functional only through jam sessions and improvisation. Obviously, thereafter, we deeply worked on composition and production, but all came
from jamming.
MiM: This album features guest musicians. How did the idea come about?
H: For us, one of the most important things for a band in the composing phase is to have someone outside give tips or opinions about the new material. We decided for the first time to do this professionally, asking Stefan from Colour Haze to follow us in the composing part of the record. And spontaneously, we decided to ask him to join us on guitar for one song. It's not the first time that a guest joined us for one song (Boris from Monkey3 played the guitar solo for our song "Anachronaut" on our LP "Reverently Heading Into Nowhere"). But it's the first time that someone has followed our composition work.
MiM: When you are going to compose new material, what are the most direct influences?
H: Definitely, the music we listen to at that moment and also the idea to doing something different from what we did before without going completely out of “Humulus style”
MiM: Normally, when you release a new album, the normal thing to do afterward is to tour. What plans do you have to promote this album?
H: We have already done some gigs in Italy and Germany, and a bigger ride is planned for spring 2024.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
H: We are pleased about this record; after more than 10 years of being around and many troubles, we feel now again like a real band who loves to do songs and concerts and have fun with people. Our goal is to communicate this to our new and old fans with this new LP and live during concerts.
