Las leyendas alemanas del Thrash Metal Sodom, que formarán parte de la reunión en vivo de Big Teutonic 4, han anunciado el lanzamiento del EP “1982”, que se lanzará el 10 de noviembre a través de Steamhammer/SPV. Made in Metal habla con Tom Angelripper, líder, fundador, bajista y vocalista de la banda, para saber todo sobre este nuevo álbum.
MiM: “1982” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2023) es un excelente regalo de la banda para todos los fans del Thrash Metal. El texto trata sobre nuestros inicios. Fue una revolución. Queríamos ser odiados. Estábamos en contra de nuestros profesores, formadores y padres que no comprendían. Pero no nos dejamos disuadir de nuestro camino. No entendían lo que estábamos haciendo y no recibimos ningún apoyo de su parte. En ese momento queríamos demostrar que éramos diferentes y no compatibles con el sistema. La música en sí está escrita en un estilo típico de los 80 y encarna el espíritu de los viejos tiempos.
MiM: ¿Qué recuerdos te vienen a la mente de aquellos años en los que decidiste formar la banda?
TA: Después de que salió el primer álbum de Venom, tenía claro que yo mismo tocaría el bajo. Sin Venom, mi vida probablemente habría sido completamente diferente y la escena del metal tampoco sería la misma. Tank también siempre me ha fascinado. Me gustaban estos tríos con actitudes punk. MiM: A pesar de haber grabado todas estas canciones de la primera etapa de Sodom, el sonido no perdió su esencia. Sonido áspero, rápido, ochentero. Puro Thrash Metal!! ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
TA: Grabamos todas las canciones en nuestra sala de ensayo. Hace poco montamos un pequeño estudio allí. Nuestro baterista, Toni, conoce muy bien la tecnología y lo grabó todo. Toni también produjo nuestro último álbum de estudio. Pero grabamos todo lo posible en forma analógica. Así que, de la forma clásica, con micrófonos delante de los altavoces y en la batería, creo que suena más auténtico que con cualquier plug-in digital o amplificador moderno como Kemper. Siempre queremos sonar como somos y cómo suenan los instrumentos individuales en la sala de ensayo.
MiM: La canción “1982 (Remix)” es sin duda un reconocimiento a la rebelión del joven Tom en aquellos años. ¿Es eso así? ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?TA: Era importante para nosotros que el single se lanzara nuevamente en versión vinilo. Para ello, volvimos a mezclar la canción y agregamos la canción “Equinox” como extra. La versión de 1982 en la caja suena diferente, por supuesto. Pero pienso que el remix es mejor y más poderoso. La canción recuerda a los viejos tiempos. El texto trata sobre nuestros inicios. Fue una revolución. Queríamos ser odiados. Estábamos en contra de nuestros profesores, formadores y padres que no comprendían. En ese momento queríamos demostrar que éramos diferentes y no compatibles con el sistema.
MiM: Debe haber sido muy difícil para el joven Tom durante esos años escolares, cuando la gran mayoría de los niños solo escuchaban música New Wave. ¿Qué me puedes decir?
TA: Sí, es cierto. En la escuela vocacional, yo era el único en la clase que escuchaba metal. Acaba de salir el “Ace of Spades” de Motörhead. Todos mis colegas opinaron que era terrible. La mayoría de la gente escuchó la Nueva Ola y la “Ola Alemana”. A mi mejor amigo de la escuela le encantaba escuchar Adam and the Ants. Eso me pareció terrible. En aquel entonces, ser fanático del metal era algo especial y estábamos muy orgullosos de ello.
MiM: En los primeros días de noviembre, Sodom estará en el Hell and Heaven Open Air Fest en México. Tom, se dice que el mejor público de metal del mundo es el latino. ¿Qué opinas? ¿Cuál es tu criterio?
TA: Los fans latinoamericanos son los mejores y siempre están extremadamente entusiasmados. Solo existe allí. Siempre tienen hambre de esta música y el ambiente es gigantesco. Cualquier banda que haya tocado alguna vez en Sudamérica o Centroamérica puede confirmarlo. Los fans ven el concierto y lo celebran con una fiesta atmosférica y ruidosa. Siempre estamos contentos cuando volvemos allí.
MiM: Excelente diseño de portada. ¿De quién estaba a cargo? Esta vez, la figura icónica de la banda no aparece en portada. ¿Es eso así? ¿Qué me puedes decir?
TA: El nombre del artista es Sebastian, un amigo de la banda. La portada está basada en nuestro primer demo, “Witching Metal”. En aquel entonces, en 1982, Knarrenheinz aún no había nacido. Apareció por primera vez en “Persecution Mania” en 1987. A partir de entonces, a menudo apareció en nuestras obras de arte.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este EP? ¿Hay conciertos o giras programadas este año?
TA: No hay planes especiales para eso. Estamos ansiosos por volver a hacerlo y actualmente estamos escribiendo canciones para el nuevo álbum. Pero siguen llegando solicitudes de conciertos. (Para que no sea aburrido para nosotros)

German Thrash Metal Legends Sodom who will be part of the Big Teutonic 4 live reunion, have announced the release of the EP “1982”, which will be released on November 10th via Steamhammer/SPV. Made in Metal talks with Tom Angelripper, leader, founder, bassist, and vocalist of the band, to find out everything about this new album.
MiM: "1982" (Steamhammer/SPV, 2023) is an excellent gift from the band to all Thrash Metal fans. Heavy, rough, and fast sound, with cutting riff guitars to penetrate everyone's soul. Tom, what can you tell me about this EP?TA: The song 1982 is reminiscent of the old days. The text is about our beginnings. It was a revolution. We wanted to be hated. We were against our teachers, trainers, and uncomprehending parents. But we didn't let ourselves be dissuaded from our path. They had no understanding of what we were doing, and we received no support from them. At the time, we wanted to show that we were different and not system-compatible. The music itself is written in a typical 80's style and embodies the spirit of the good old days.
MiM: What memories come to mind from those years when you decided to form the band?
TA: After the first Venom album came out, it was clear to me that I would pick up the bass myself. Without Venom, my life would probably have been entirely different, and the metal scene wouldn't be the same either. Tank has always fascinated me too. I liked these trio bands with punk attitudes. MiM: Despite having recorded all these songs from the first stage of Sodom, the sound did not lose its essence. Rough, fast, eighties sound. Pure Thrash Metal!! What was the recording and production process like?
TA: We recorded all the songs in our rehearsal room. We set up a small studio there recently. Our drummer, Toni, is very familiar with the technology and recorded everything. Toni also produced our last studio album. But we recorded as much as possible in analog form. So in the classic way, with microphones in front of the speakers and on the drums, I think it sounds more authentic than with any digital plug-ins or modern amplifiers like Kemper. We always want to sound like we are and how the individual instruments sound in the rehearsal room.
MiM: The song "1982 (Remix)" is undoubtedly a shout-out to the rebellion of young Tom in those years. Is that so? What can you tell me about it?TA: It was important for us that the single be released again as a vinyl version. For this purpose, we mixed the song again and added the song "Equinox" as a bonus. The 1982 version in the box sounds different, of course. But I think the remix is better and more powerful. The song is reminiscent of the old days. The text is about our beginnings. MiM: It must have been very difficult for young Tom during those school years, when the vast majority of boys only listened to New Wave music. What can you tell me?
TA: Yes, that's right. At vocational school, I was the only one in the class who listened to metal. Motörhead's Ace of Spades just came out. My colleagues all thought it was terrible. Most people heard New Wave and “German Wave”. My best friend at school loved listening to Adam and the Ants. I found that terrible. Back then, it was something special to be a metal fan, and we were very proud of it.
MiM: In the first days of November, Sodom will be at the Hell and Heaven Open Air Fest in Mexico. Tom, it is said that the best metal audience in the world is Latin. What do you think? What is your criterion?
TA: The Latin American fans are the best and always extremely enthusiastic. It only exists there. They are always hungry for this music, and the atmosphere is gigantic. Every band that has ever played in South or Central America can confirm this. The fans watch the concert and celebrate with an atmospheric and loud party. We are always pleased when we return there.
MiM: Excellent cover design. Who was he in charge of? This time, the iconic figure of the band does not appear on the cover. Is that so? What can you tell me?
TA: The artist's name is Sebastian, a friend of the band. The cover is based on our first demo, “Witching Metal.” Back then, in 1982, Knarrenheinz had not yet been born. It first appeared at Persecution Mania in 1987. From then on, he often graced our artwork.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this EP? Are there concerts or tours scheduled this year?
TA: There are no special plans for that. We're looking forward to it again and are currently writing songs for the new album. But concert requests keep coming in. (So it won't be boring with us)
