"¡Este album es un paseo salvaje! Una montaña rusa de licks de metal de los 80"
La banda de Post Hardcore de Chicago, Dust Biters, lanzó el primer sencillo, “Progeny” de su álbum independiente "Guilt" el 13 de enero. Made in Metal habla con Nick Kinsley, vocalista y guitarrista de la banda, para conocer más detalles de este álbum y la historia de la banda.
MiM: ¿Cuéntanos sobre los inicios de la banda? ¿Dónde y cómo se formó?
Kinsley: ¡Hola! ¡Gracias por tenerme! La banda se formó en la sala de estar del apartamento de Nick Miller (guitarra). Nick y yo tocamos juntos en bandas cuando éramos más jóvenes. Dejé de tocar música durante diez años hasta que Nick Miller se mudó a Chicago y me pidió que tocara. ¡Se suponía que solo serían dos fumetas tocando en un sofá hasta que nos dimos cuenta de que podríamos tener algo realmente genial!
MiM: “Guilt” (Independiente, 2023) es un disco con un sonido sucio, guitarras afiladas y agresivas. Una mezcla entre el punk más bizarro y el post-hardcore más denso. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?
Kinsley: ¡Este álbum es un paseo salvaje! Una montaña rusa de licks de metal de los 80 con una gran actitud punk rock. Las letras son crudas, reales y emocionales. Es mi pasado, mi pasado muy oscuro y desordenado. ¡Alex Lackner nos grabó, mezcló y masterizó! También ayudó a producirlo. Me empujó a lo grande con mi voz.
MiM: Nick tu voz es espectacular! Es como el filo de un cuchillo, afilado y capaz de penetrar el cerebro de los amantes de la banda. Sin duda, es la seña de identidad de la banda. ¿De dónde viene tu formación como vocalista? ¿En qué otras bandas has estado?
Kinsley: ¡Awwww, muchas gracias! Es mi mayor inseguridad en la banda. Toco la guitarra desde que era un niño, pero esta es la primera vez que canto en una banda. Todavía estoy aprendiendo y creciendo todos los días con él. Nunca confié en mi forma de cantar, pero sabía que si íbamos a formar una banda, sería difícil encontrar la voz adecuada. No estoy seguro de si el mío es correcto tampoco, pero funciona. Sin lecciones ¡Mucho YouTube y cantando la banda sonora de Frozen en mi auto con mi hija!
MiM: Dust Biters es una banda con una energía formidable. Dime, ¿cómo es un concierto de banda?
Kinsley: Puede que seamos viejos, ¡pero nos deprimimos! Jajaja. Tenemos toda la energía en el escenario. En el último show que tocamos, desafiné el bajo de Bryan con los saltos punk de mi papá.
MiM: ¿Podríamos definir el sonido de la banda o, por el contrario, son una banda inquieta a la que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?
Kinsley: ¡Nunca queremos limitarnos! Todos venimos de diferentes orígenes. Nuestras nuevas melodías tendrán un poco más de emoción.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?
Kinsley: ¡Sí, nos gustaría todo eso! Ja ja. Solo encontrando el tiempo con trabajos para adultos, dos de nosotros siendo padres.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.
Kinsley: ¡No tengas miedo de escribir desde el corazón! Sí, eso es cursi, pero es verdad. Muchas bandas quieren encajar en este molde, por lo que las limita. Extiende esas alas abstractas y escribe para ti, no para nadie más.
Chicago-based Post Hardcore band Dust Biters released the first single, “Progeny” off their independent album "Guilt" on January 13. Made in Metal talks with Nick Kinsley, vocalist, and guitarist of the band to find out everything about this album and the history of the band.
MiM: Tell us about the beginnings of the band. Where and how was it formed?
Kinsley: Hello! Thank you for having me! The band was formed in the living room of Nick Miller (guitar) apartment. Nick and I played in bands together when we were younger. I stopped playing music for ten years until Nick Miller moved to Chicago and asked me to jam. It was supposed just to be two stoners jamming on a couch until we realized we might have something really rad!
MiM: “Guilt” (Independiente, 2023) is an album with a dirty sound, and sharp and aggressive guitars. A mix between the most bizarre punk and the densest Post Hardcore. What can you tell me about this album?
Kinsley: This album is a wild ride! A roller coaster of 80’s metal licks with a big fuck you punk rock attitude. The lyrics are raw, real, and emotional. It is my past, my very dark and messy past. Alex Lackner recorded us, mixed, and mastered us! He also helped produce it. Pushed me big time with my vocals.
MiM: Nick your voice is spectacular! It is like the edge of a knife, it is sharp and able to penetrate the brain of the lovers of the band. Without a doubt, it is the hallmark of the band. Where does your training as a vocalist come from? What other bands have you been in?
Kinsley: Awwww thank you so much! It’s my biggest insecurity in the band. I’ve been playing guitar since I was a kid, but this is the first time I sang in a band. I’m still learning and growing every day with it. I never trusted my singing but I knew if we were gonna start a band it would be hard to find the right voice. I’m not sure if mine is right either but it works. No lessons. Lots of YouTube and singing the Frozen soundtrack in my car with my daughter!
MiM: Dust Biters is a band with formidable energy. Tell me, what a band concert is like?
Kinsley: We might be old but we get down! Hahaha. We have all the energy on stage. Last show we played I kicked Bryan’s bass out of tune with my dad's punk jumps.
MiM: Could we define the sound of the band or, on the contrary, are they a restless band that likes to innovate and open new proposals?
Kinsley: We never want to limit ourselves! We all come from different backgrounds. Our new tunes will have a bit more emotion to them.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album? Are concerts or tours scheduled this year?
Kinsley: Yes we would like all of that! Haha. Just finding the time with adult jobs, two of us being parents.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
Kinsley: Don’t be afraid to write from the heart! Yeah, that’s cheesy but it’s true. So many bands want to fit this mold so it limits them. Spread those abstract wings and write for you, not for anyone else.
