La banda alemana de metal progresivo Ivanhoe ha anunciado el lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum, 'Healed By The Sun', y cuenta con los nuevos miembros Chris Lorey (guitarras) y el baterista Mathias Biehl. “Healed By The Sun” se lanzará como CD, Digipak, Ltd. Vinilo LP y formato digital el 10 de mayo a través de Massacre Records. Made in Metal habla con el guitarrista Chris Lorey para saber todo sobre este nuevo álbum.

MiM: Cuatro años sin sacar un nuevo disco y ahora nos sorprenden con este excelente disco. ¿Cómo fue volver al estudio de grabación? ¿Crees que las dos nuevas incorporaciones a la formación de la banda aportaron más frescura y oxígeno a la banda?

CL: Bueno, gracias. Bueno, ya que soy uno de los chicos nuevos, espero haber traído algo de frescura y oxígeno a la banda. Después de unirnos a la banda, comenzamos de inmediato con el proceso de composición del nuevo álbum. Dado que “Blood and Gold” salió justo antes de COVID-19, no había posibilidad de hacer una gira con el álbum, así que nos sentamos juntos y discutimos cómo podría sonar un nuevo álbum y cómo queríamos que fuera. Básicamente, usamos el tiempo que no podíamos tocar para un intenso proceso de composición, y fue genial grabar el álbum. Lo grabamos en parte en el “Ivanhoe Studio” y aquí en mi estudio “The Cave”, y le entregamos el proceso de mezcla a manos externas a Andy Horn.

MiM: “Healed By The Sun” (Massacre Records, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido excelente!! Todas las canciones te hacen viajar entre melodías, guitarras con base de bajo y batería con ritmos complejos. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

CL: Bueno, gracias por las amables palabras sobre la producción. Creo que es justo decir que tanto Giovanni como yo somos perfeccionistas y nos desafiamos bastante tanto en la interpretación de grabación de todos los miembros como en el sonido que queríamos lograr. Como sabíamos que la mezcla ya no estaría completamente en nuestras manos, nos concentramos mucho en el sonido que ya estaba dentro del proceso de grabación, por lo que no hubo ningún intento de “podemos arreglarlo en la mezcla”. Comencé a grabar las guitarras básicamente en la preproducción y los demos que nos habíamos enviado entre todos, y luego la batería tocó en mi guitarra, lo cual es bastante inusual. Giovanni clavó el bajo en las guitarras y la batería, y luego vinieron los teclados junto con las voces. Y todo esto funcionó en paralelo, así que no fue que grabáramos las guitarras completas, y luego la batería completa y demás, sino que todo el proceso funcionó en paralelo. En lo que respecta a las canciones en sí, queríamos romper con el legado completo de ocho álbumes de la banda y ser conscientes del camino y el ADN de Ivanhoe. Y especialmente para mí, como uno de los nuevos, esto hizo que el proceso de composición del álbum fuera increíblemente emocionante.

MiM: “One Ticket To Paradise” es una canción muy bien elaborada, musical y líricamente, tiene una letra que nos invita a reflexionar sobre el mundo en el que vivimos. ¿Es así? ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?

CL: “One Ticket To Paradise”  trata líricamente sobre el aumento del abuso de drogas. Es un tema oscuro y triste, ya que especialmente los niños pequeños encontraron su camino hacia las drogas durante los encierros de COVID-19. Lo emocionante es que la canción en sí suena más feliz de lo que realmente es la letra. Y creo que esto es válido para todo el álbum: escribimos sobre temas serios que están en nuestra mente y que necesitamos digerir de alguna manera. Al mismo tiempo, escribimos música desde el corazón y con amor. El título del álbum refleja muy bien este conflicto en mi opinión.

MiM: La portada del álbum es impresionante. ¿Quién fue el responsable del diseño? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás de este diseño?

CL: La portada del álbum fue diseñada por nuestro ex baterista, Micha Krebes. Le gusta mucho la IA y tuvo la idea de hacer la portada basada en la IA. Vino con algunos borradores a nuestra sala de ensayo y quedamos impresionados con los diseños. Realmente me encanta la portada, especialmente en vinilo, donde todos los detalles se ven mucho mejor. Con todos los confinamientos por el COVID-19, las guerras en Israel y Ucrania, la gente necesita esconderse en algún lugar y su libertad y expresión se ven perturbadas. La portada y el título del álbum también significan un vínculo para salir al sol y tener algún tipo de curación en un día soleado al aire libre.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de componer música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo hay uno o quizás dos que componen en la banda?

CL: Es diferente. Creo que “Healed by the Sun”, la canción principal, fue un proceso muy colaborativo dentro de toda la banda, lo mismo fue “Broken Illusions”, que en realidad es una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum. En general, sin embargo, diría que Giovanni y yo fuimos los principales compositores del álbum y en algunos casos nos desafiamos bastante hasta que acordamos mutuamente que la canción estaba terminada.

MiM: Este álbum cuenta con varios invitados. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

CL: La mayoría de los músicos invitados vinieron para el bonus track, “A la espera del día del juicio”. Giovanni tuvo la idea de volver a grabar esta canción en la formación original de la banda, y con la única excepción del ex cantante, Scott Anderson, se logró. German Progressive Metal band Ivanhoe have announced the release of their new album, “Healed By The Sun”, and features new band members Chris Lorey (guitars) and drummer Mathias Biehl. “Healed By The Sun” will be released as a CD, Digipak, Ltd. Vinyl LP and digital format on May 10 via Massacre Records. Made in Metal talks to the guitar player Chris Lorey to find out everything about this new album.

MiM: Four years without releasing a new album and now they surprise us with this excellent album. What was it like going back to the recording studio? Do you think that the two new additions to the band's lineup brought more freshness and oxygen to the band?

CL: Well, thank you first. Well, since I am one of the new guys, I hope I brought some freshness and oxygen to the band. After we joined the band, we started very much right away with the writing process of the new album. Since “Blood and Gold” came out right before COVID-19, there was no chance to tour with the album, so we sat together and discussed what a new album could sound like and what we wanted it to be like. We basically used the time we couldn’t play for an intense writing process, and it was great to record the album. We recorded it partly in the “Ivanhoe Studio” and here in my studio “The Cave”, and we gave the mixing process to external hands to Andy Horn.

MiM: "Healed By The Sun" (Massacre Records, 2024) is an album with an excellent sound!! All the songs make you travel between melodies, guitars with a base of bass and drums with complex beats. What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like?

CL: Well, thank you for the friendly words on the production. I think it’s fair to say that both Giovanni and I are perfectionists, and we challenged each other quite a bit on both the recording performance of all members, and the sound we wanted to achieve. Since we knew the mixing would be not fully in our hands anymore, we focused a lot on the sound already within the recording process, so there was no “we can fix it in the mix” attempt. I started recording the guitars basically on the preproduction and demos that we had sent back-and-forth between all of us, and then the drums played on my guitar, which is quite unusual. Giovanni nailed the bass on guitars and drums, and the keyboards came afterward together with vocals. And this whole thing worked in parallel, so it was not that we recorded the complete guitars, and then the complete Drums and so on, but the whole process was working in parallel. When it comes to the songs themselves, we wanted to break a bow on the complete heritage of eight albums of the band and be aware of the path and the DNA of Ivanhoe. And especially for me as one of the new guys, this made the writing process of the album incredibly exciting.

MiM: “One Ticket To Paradise” is a very well-crafted song musically, and lyrically, it has lyrics that invite us to reflect on the world we live in. Is that so? What can you tell me about this topic?

CL: "One ticket to Paradise" is lyrically about increasing drug abuse. It’s a dark and sad topic since especially young kids found their way towards drugs within the COVID-19 lockdowns. The exciting thing is that the song itself sounds actually happier than the lyrics really are. And I think this is valid for the complete album: we write about serious topics that are in our mind, and that we need to digest in some sort. At the same time, we write music from our heart, and with love. The album title reflects this conflict very good in my opinion.

MiM: The album cover is impressive. Who was responsible for the design? What is the concept behind this design?

CL: The album cover was designed by our former drummer, Micha Krebes. He’s very much into AI and had the idea to do the cover AI based. He came with some drafts to our rehearsal room, and we were just blown away by the designs. I really love the front cover, especially on vinyl, where all the details are so much better to see. With all the COVID-19 lockdowns, the wars in Israel and Ukraine, people need to hide somewhere and are disturbed in their freedom and expression. The cover and the album title also mean a link to going out there into the Sun and having some sort of healing on a sunny day outside.

MiM: What is the creative process of composing music like, is it a collective process, or is there only one or maybe two who compose in the band?

CL: It is different. I think “Healed by the Sun”, the title track, was a very collaborative process within the complete band, the same was “Broken illusions”, which is actually one of my favorite tracks on the album. In general, however, I would say that Giovanni and I were the main writers of the album and in some cases we challenged each other quite a bit until we mutually agreed the song was finished.

MiM: This album features several guests. How did the idea come about?

CL: Most of the guest musicians came in for the bonus track, “Awaiting judgement day”. Giovanni had the idea to re-record this song in the original lineup of the band, and with the one exception of the former singer, Scott Anderson, it was achieved. So most of the guests on the album have either been part of the band in the 80s or are close friends to the band who had an idea to contribute to the album.

MiM: They are a band that has been formed for many years, with albums and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

CL: I think that the band showed a considerable variety over the years, and I think I can say that as the new guy who learned songs from 8 albums to play. There are different phases the band went through, and some albums are more approachable and happier, while others are extremely complex and dark. I think it’s part of the DNA of Ivanhoe that with every album, we bring something that wasn’t there on the last album.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled this year?

CL: Right now, we are in the middle of the promotion of the album with all the interviews and corresponding topics. But of course, we burn to present this album live as soon as possible. We cannot say yet, if we can do a complete tour or hop on another tour, or we will just play countless single concerts or festivals. We have to see what is possible, but I can tell you from the band that we are ready to rock wherever, whenever.
