Call of Charon 3 by Sebastian Hansen

English Version

Patrick: Hola, Raúl, soy Patrick de Call of Charon.

Call of Charon 3 by Sebastian Hansen

After joining forces with Mystic Production, Massacre Records has finally revealed its upcoming release schedule, starting with the highly anticipated new studio album by the German Death Metal powerhouse Call of Charon. Their new album 'Tales of Tragedy' is set to be released on August 1st. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to converse with the band.

MiM: Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona, and it is a pleasure to talk to you.

Patrick: Hi Raúl, this is Patrick from Call of Charon. I’m the vocalist and I’m glad to have the opportunity to answer your questions. This is actually the first time we’re doing an interview for a Spanish magazine, so i’m really excited!

MiM: “Tales of Tragedy” (Massacre Records, 2025) features a rough, dark, and heavy sound, with cutting guitars and cavernous vocals from the underworld, while still having exquisite melodic passages. Excellent!! What can you tell me about this album? Who was responsible for the production? What was the recording and production process like?

CALL OF CHARON coverTales Of Tragedy Patrick: It’s definitely a heavier sound compared to our previous records. We always keep an eye on production quality and strive to deliver a strong final product, and it turned out great. We hired our long time producer Phil Kaase from the Mixing Mine to handle the recordings and Stephan Hawkes for mix and mastering. Recording with Phil is always challenging—he knows ’s how to get the best out of us, and occasionally this is really painful and exhausting, but meanwhile we get used to it. It is already the third record in a row with him handling the recordings.

But it was the first time that we worked with Stephan and he really did an excellent job. The production process was actually smooth and very focused. We had a highly productive time working together. Our goal was to achieve the best possible result, and Stephan made us feel like we were just as important to him as any of the other bands he’s worked with. We’re truly happy to have him on board.

MiM: “Tales of Tragedy” is an album where the melodic passages are very well thought out and placed as part of each theme, making it quite interesting and appealing to reach larger audiences. Is that so? What is your criterion?

Patrick: Yes, you’re absolutely right: We do try to embed those details into our songs. But honestly, I never expected that to come up in an interview, and I really appreciate it. It shows that you’re paying close attention to details and every aspect of the music. I can assure you, it’s not about trying to appeal to a broader audience. It’s simply because we want to give our songs more depth and weight. We spend a lot of time refining them in the studio to make them sound bigger and more impactful.

MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning you already had a clear idea of what sound the band would have?

Patrick: When it comes to the band’s evolution, we originally started out as a metalcore band. But without clean vocals and always leaned more toward the heavier side of the genre. Over the years, our sound gradually shifted into deathcore, incorporating more death metal influences along the way, as well as going through several line-up changes. Today, I’d describe us as a deathcore band with a wide range of additional influences. When it comes to Tales of Tragedy, our main goal was to combine the strongest elements from our previous releases. On our last EP, we worked with Tue Madsen and for our last full-length, we collaborated with Zack Ohren. Both productions had some strong aspects! So this time, we aimed to take the best of both worlds and push everything to the next level. I believe Stephan Hawkes did a fantastic job and delivered the best possible sound for a Call of Charon record.

MiM: What are your main influences when composing new material?

Patrick: That’s an excellent question. I think everyone in the band has different influences. When it comes to the lyrics and vocals, I can say that I listen to a lot of music. I, personally, enjoy a wide range of genres. For example, I’m also into rap music, and I believe there’s a lot to learn from artists outside the metal scene. I try to hold myself to a high standard when it comes to lyrics — in terms of themes, messages, and rhyme schemes. I always aim to write the best lyrics I possibly can. This is also a reason why making a Call of Charon record took pretty long.

MiM: The voice on this album is rough and strong. It contains anger and rage. It's excellent! How do you do it? Where does all that rage come from?

Patrick: Haha, that made me laugh. I think everyone has something that brings out the worst in them — something that pushes and drags you beyond your limits. When it comes to my lyrics, they’re either based on personal experiences or stories that catch my attention. And when it’s about personal topics, there’s obviously a lot of emotion involved. Sometimes there’s a lot of anger, especially when I’m dealing with darker or negative themes. But even when I write about things I see in the media or in documentaries, if something really moves me — if it really hits me — I can dive into it very quickly.

Even when I am a very calm guy, I guess you could say I carry a lot of anger, a lot of inner rage. And making music is a healthy way to let it out — a way to release that pressure and let off steam.

MiM: Any tour or concert plans in the coming months?

Patrick: Yes, we will play some more festivals and a lot of club shows this year. Hopefully, we’ll be able to go on tour again next year — but as of now, there are no concrete plans for 2026.

I think once we’ve released the record and played the shows in August and September, we’ll start focusing more on what’s ahead. But up to this point, nothing has been officially scheduled yet.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share some words with your fans and our readers.

Patrick: I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you and Made in Metal for the chance to do this interview. We’ve never really had the opportunity to connect with the Spanish metal scene, so this is really cool. If you’re into (modern) death metal just give us a listen. I hope you will enjoy Tales of Tragedy.

Thanks for your time,

Patrick.
