English Version

Atentamente, Peavy.

German legends Rage will soon release their new album, “A New World Rising,” due out September 26th and available on CD, LP, as a box set, and as a digital download through the prestigious record label Steamhammer/SPV. This is an excellent opportunity to chat with Peter “Peavy” Wagner, the band's frontman, vocalist, and bassist.

MiM: You mention there are no orchestrations this time around. Was this an artistic decision to keep the album more straightforward or part of a strategy for the next effort?

P: As we just had a fully orchestrated album out last year ("Afterlifelines" Disc 2), we felt no hurry to do a follow-up so quickly, as this should be an extra element in our music. Plus, the new songs “happened” pretty spontaneously; we just did what felt natural, so they turned out pretty pure and rough.

rage a new world risingMiM: Peavy, you mention the “creative vortex” you're in. What has changed in the band's internal chemistry to get to this point?

P: Me & Jean. We are a perfect match in songwriting; we push ourselves up with new ideas, and as we have our recording studio, we can record our ideas right away. That's so easy and quick—no need for demos or pre-production…

MiM: The album conveys a clear message: “Think independently and don't believe everything you're told.” What personal or collective experiences inspired this stance?

P: Actually, that's how I've thought for a long time. I inform myself about all kinds of developments from independent sources. Moreover, my personal situation is that I feel absolutely free now to look into the future positively, as I just had a big “cleanup.” Looking back on my life when I wrote the “Soundchaser” book, that felt like “letting go” of all ballast in my mind; now I’m eagerly awaiting new things…

MiM: You've described this album as one of the most diverse of your career. What new or experimental elements did you incorporate without losing the Rage essence?

P: We included new aspects like doomy metalcore riffs, tribal rhythms, punk and sleazy stuff, and some progressive structures but never lost the typical Rage Feeling.

MiM: How do you think music can counteract the destructive mentality and fear you mention?

P: Music and song lyrics cannot be more than inspiring ideas, a hopefully fresh look on things, but that's already an important thing occasionally. When you really get into it, the music joins you through your day, and you start thinking about it…

MiM: What does the word “freedom” mean to you in the context of "Freedom"?

P: We're nothing without freedom and peace; real life is just possible with them.

MiM: “Freedom” is the first single. Why did you consider it the perfect introduction to the album?

P: We listened to the whole album together with the SPV people, and everybody favored it for the first output.

MiM: “Innovation” opens the album with a thrash blast. How did the idea of starting with such energy come about?

P: That's what metal is about; we love starting an album with a bang!

MiM: “Fire In Your Eyes” is a declaration of love to metal fans. What live moments have strengthened that special bond with your audience?

P: It's that energy exchange that happens between the band and the audience; it's the long years of friendship with so many of the fans that keeps me and the band going on. I always know that I wouldn't have had this life without those people, and I'm deeply grateful for it.

MiM: What can you tell us about the tour that will accompany the release?

P: We start in the middle of September with a first leg around here in Europe; there are more tour parts following in the next year. We will announce them soon. We'll have a special Spain week next spring that we're all looking forward to!

MiM: Do you think “A New World Rising” marks the beginning of a new era for Rage?

P: Our new era has already begun, I think. We're a great team, and we want to continue like this as long as we can.

MiM: After more than three decades of career, what continues to motivate you to innovate and not repeat yourself?

P: It's more than four decades, actually. We are still alive and relevant; we learn and develop constantly, so it's just natural to innovate our music.

MiM: How would you describe the evolution of Rage's sound from “Resurrection Day” to “A New World Rising”?

P: In these five years we grew together as a team; I guess you can hear this. These albums work like a trilogy telling about mankind's history from the Neolithic Era to the upcoming future.

MiM: How do you think the album's message speaks to the reality your fans around the world are experiencing today?

P: What we are experiencing today here in Europe is still the downfall of our old and overcome systems, like I described it on “Afterlifelines“. “A new world rising“ is already a view into the future after we have reached the bottom line…

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

P: Thanks to all for being there and sharing the love for this music. We're excited to meet you again soon! Have a good time and enjoy. Yours, Peavy
