English Version

Si me siento bien, simplemente me dejo llevar.

Jaja

VR c Robin Utbult 595029MiM: El título The Devil's Asylum evoca imágenes poderosas.

Geoff Thorpe

MiM: Geoff, before we get into the nitty-gritty, how are you feeling right now, with a new album ready and a tour on the horizon?vicious rumors the devils asylum 600 2025 6136 01

VR: Hi Raul, thanks for the kind words; it's a pleasure for me to talk to you! I'm really excited about the new album; the reviews and ratings have been wonderful. It's a bit of a return to the classic sound of the band. The 3 singles have over 300,000 views in a short time, so it's all moving the right way. Unfortunately, I had to postpone any touring until next year, probably May, because I broke and badly dislocated my shoulder at the last show in Europe in July. It's a long rehabilitation, but in no way is this the end for me. I'll be doing a worldwide “Devil's Asylum” tour with the guys next year!

MiM: Geoff, you mentioned that the album returns to Vicious Rumors' roots with contemporary influences. Could you elaborate on how that balance is achieved?

VR: To me, the first three songs and singles have the old school VR approach, while songs like “Abusement Park” and “Boring Day in Hell” offer something new for VR. I try not to overthink the albums anymore. If it feels good, I just go with it. Although after playing over 200 shows of the first 4 albums live in the last years. I did have the feeling of bringing more of the classic sound back to the band.

MiM: What was the most difficult challenge during the recording process in four different studios in such a short time?

VR: The most difficult challenge is mainly communication between all parties and staying on the same page! We live in a great time when we can record in 4 studios around the world, and the final result sounds like we're all kicking ass in the same room. We worked with pros in each studio, like Juan Urteaga and Jimmie Evans, so it wasn't as difficult as you might think. We also have a solid chemistry within the band. It's fast, tight, and accurate! Everybody did an outstanding job!

MiM: What was it like integrating Chalice and Denver Cooper into the band? What unique contributions did they bring?

VR: I had all the songs demoed up by the time we got Chalice and Denver; by the time they put their stamp on it, it rose from my demo to album quality! Robin and Larry laid down a thunderous rhythm, and everyone added something special! I demo all the songs as a blueprint but never as a final. I left room for everyone to shine, and they all did!

VR c Robin Utbult 959162MiM: Geoff, you said Chalice has a voice reminiscent of Carl Albert but with its personality. What impressed you most about your audition?

VR: We looked at 14 serious singers around the world. Narrowed that down to a final 4. Then Chalice did something that was totally unexpected and sent a version of “Ship of Fools” a cappella. Not even a PA, just him singing in a room, and we could hear every emotion and tone … it was so good we didn't ask anyone to do that … he did it, he got the job!

MiM: What was the creative spark that ignited this album, and how does it differ from previous Vicious Rumors works?

VR: After the European tour in 2024, it was clear I needed a new singer and guitarist! It had also been 5 years since our last album… the pressure was mounting! The day I fired the last 2 guys. I went to work! I demoed 11 songs. Hired Denver Cooper 10 min after letting the last guy go… it took a little longer to find the singer, but we got lucky, and by August 2024 I have the lineup completely ready to rock. It all happened fast … the fastest since Digital Dictator! It was sheer will and determination to get it done… with a bit of the heavy metal stars aligning! Lol

MiM: The title The Devil's Asylum evokes powerful images. What's the concept or story behind it?

VR: Originally a horror script, The Devil's Asylum is about the messed-up world we live in today… things becoming so bad the whole world is an asylum and we are all the inmates! I just thought it would make a wicked album title as well!

VR c Robin Utbult 826973MiM: What was the writing process like with Jimmie Evans as co-producer, and what did he contribute to the final vision of the album?

VR: Jimmie Evans helps me demo and produce the demos for the albums at his studio, Electric Punishment Studios in Santa Rosa, CA. He also co-wrote “Abusement Park,” “Crack the Sky,” and “Devil's Asylum!” We're longtime friends and have been working together for years!! This year he also played rhythm guitar on the 3 songs we wrote together! He deserves the co-producer credit. Always great to work together! The same with Juan Urteaga; we've done every album with him since 2006, "Warball." It's always a pleasure to work with pros and good friends.

MiM: It's been more than four decades since "Soldiers of the Night." How do you keep your motivation and creative energy alive?

VR: I love the action! I love hearing my guitar loud as hell through a PA system. The main thing is the connection with fans through the power of music. It's generational. It's been a real honor.

MiM: How important is it for you to maintain the “show” element in concerts, beyond the music?

VR: I've always felt the show is significant. It's how you deliver the music. They go hand in hand. It doesn't have to be over the top. It just has to match the power of the songs and flow with the pace of the concert.

VR c Robin Utbult 595029MiM: You mentioned the idea ofturning Vicious Rumors songs into horror films. Is this project still ongoing?

VR: I'd love to see some of my ideas become movies. I'm a big fan of metal music and horror stories; they go so well together!! Not only that, but I'll keep creating, and we'll see what happens!

MiM: What are your plans for touring for the new album, considering the hiatus forced by your shoulder injury?

VR: All touring for The Devil's Asylum will start in mid 2026. I need time for my shoulder to heal correctly the first time . We plan to do the biggest, best tour of the world possible! All starts in 2026!!

MiM: If you could define the legacy you want to leave with Vicious Rumors in a single sentence, what would it be?

VR: Vicious Rumors is a band that always played with passion and intensity, writing killer songs, and they were willing to risk everything to rock the world, and they did it with power and style.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

VR: Thank you for all your support for VR and metal music! Come and celebrate heavy metal with Vicious Rumors, and let's live life to the fullest.

All the best,

Geoff Thorpe
