"Podría escribir un libro de tres tomos con todas las bandas en las que he trabajado"
Henning Basse es uno de los vocalistas más importantes dentro del power metal. Conocido por sus trabajos en Metallium, Firewind, Gamma Ray, Sons of Seasons, MaYan, Legions of the Night, Goditha y Orpheus Blade, entre muchos otros. Aquí repasamos parte de su carrera.

MiM - ¡¡Hola Henning !! ¿Cómo estás? Para comenzar esta conversación, me gustaría saber ¿cómo te iniciaste en el mundo de la música?
HB - ¡Hola Raúl, encantado de "conocerte"! ¡Estoy vivo! y esforzándome mucho, así que todo está bien. Bueno, todo empezó en el coro de una iglesia cuando tenía seis años. No estaba tan convencido, digamos, de la idea de juntarme con un grupo de niños para cantar en una iglesia: era un chico muy tímido, pero de alguna manera me vi obligado a hacerlo. Llegó al punto en que lo disfruté cada vez más. Más tarde sucedió que me uní a mi primera banda real a los trece años, hice mis primeros shows y todo continuó.
MiM - ¿Mirando bien hacia atrás en tu carrera, hablamos de esos inicios de cuando eras parte de bandas como Metallium, Firewind y Sons of Seasons? ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esos años? ¿Qué enseñanzas han sido las que consideras que te han ayudado en la actualidad como músico consagrado?
HB - Jajaja podría escribir un libro de tres tomos con todas las bandas o proyectos en los que he estado involucrado, hasta gente como LMO o Uli Jon Roth..etc! En general soy muy “rico”, estoy lleno de experiencias en mi alma ... agradecido por todos esos años de giras, grabaciones, tratar con variadas personas, situaciones, etc. Todos esos años obviamente me convirtieron en la persona que realmente soy y llegar a conocer cosas y ser creativo, viajar por el mundo varias veces, hacer amigos, construir una red de amistades con agradables músicos, es todo lo que siempre he pedido.
Metalium está y estará en mis venas. Sons of Seasons fue una forma muy interesante y creativa de descubrir más sobre mí como compositor y cantante, nunca dejarás de aprender.
MiM - Con Firewind grabaste el álbum “Immortals” (Century Media, 2017). ¿Qué me puedes contar de este disco? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó? ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Gus G y cuál es su relación actual con él?
HB - Sí, gran álbum, me pareció muy natural todo el proceso. Las voces fueron producidas por Dennis Ward en su propio estudio, yo hice el resto de las voces (coros, agregados, etc) en mi propio estudio. Estuve de gira nuevamente con Gus en 2015 con su banda en solitario por toda Europa durante cuatro semanas y sentimos que deberíamos traer de vuelta a Firewind con toda su fuerza para escribir un álbum matador.
Mientras tanto, escribiendo las primeras canciones, Gus sintió que sería genial hacer un álbum conceptual. Siempre es difícil superar tus álbumes anteriores o canciones antiguas ... pero los fanáticos de todo el mundo estaban esperando otro “Immortals” de inmediato y yo estaba orgulloso de mi trabajo también del hecho de que se remonta conmigo y con Gus. En 2007 reemplacé a su antiguo cantante en una gira mundial. Nos hicimos buenos amigos y desde entonces es una buena amistad, así que sí, todavía estamos en contacto y nos reímos en nuestras charlas. A veces, tengo que ser honesto, a veces extraño a esta banda ya que fue una energía increíble subir al escenario.
MiM - Con Metallium grabaste y tuviste una carrera impresionante. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto? ¿Qué álbum te sigue gustando de la extensa discografía de la banda? ¿Crees que puede haber una activación de la banda en un futuro no muy lejano?
HB - Metalium fue hacia arriba con el primer álbum de inmediato, un gran éxito, ya que tuvimos un gran apoyo y un gran equipo a nuestro alrededor. Todo fue muy rápido. Me gusta el capítulo uno, el número dos y el cuatro. El cuatro, porque regresamos a otro tipo o sabor, si se quiere, de nuestra composición, soy muy selectivo cuando se trata de BUENAS canciones. Se trata de las canciones y también de una buena producción. Lars me azotó para crear líneas vocales más altas para que pudiéramos subir el listón un poco más, jajaja.
Debido a la trágica muerte de Lars este año, que fue realmente doloroso ... consumiendo mucho poder, hablando por mí mismo, pero los cuatro (MICHAEL EHRE, CHRIS CAFFERY, MATTHIAS LANGE) decidimos grabar un homenaje, una dedicatoria para Lars, para que las personas de todo el mundo apoyaran nuestra pérdida y compartieran nuestro dolor por esta situación tan triste y trágica. Queríamos dar una dedicación digna a la familia y a todos los amigos. Puede encontrar "Never Surrender" en todos los canales como Spotify o YouTube.
Este agujero es difícil de reemplazar ya que Lars tenía su sonido y tipo de interpretación únicos, además de que en realidad él era Metalium, por así decirlo, manejaba todo tipo de cosas alrededor de Metalium.
MiM - ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de tocar en vivo con Gamma Ray? ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Kai Hansen?
HB - Conozco a Kai desde que tenía diecinueve o veinte años y realicé diferentes ensayos y pruebas con diferentes bandas en el mismo edificio donde ensayaba Gamma Ray. Yo era un chico joven que buscaba una banda, ya sabes. Me invitó un día a una especie de improvisación o ensayo en sus habitaciones, y como conocía a esa banda, me sentí muy bien al unirme a ellos ese día. Nos hicimos amigos.
Años más tarde grabé coros en sus álbumes y ayudé en la gira con mi voz y fui quien les presentó a Henio Richter (más tarde se unió a Gamma Ray) Simplemente creo que es una banda de power metal perfecta y lo están haciendo muy bien, los amo y son divertidos como el infierno.
MiM - Estuviste alrededor de seis años en la banda de metal sinfónico Sons of Seasons. ¿Cómo fue tu inclusión en la banda? ¿Cómo conociste a Oliver Palotai?
HB - Conocí a Oliver en 2007 en Japón durante una gira. Me preguntó si estaría interesado en cantar algunas demos de su propio material. Es un compositor único y muy inspirador y sentí de inmediato que debería intentarlo. Viniendo del power metal o digamos heavy metal con voces agudas, me ha mostrado otro camino para trabajar de manera diferente con mi voz. Sons of Seasons se planeó como una banda, no como un proyecto paralelo o algo, supongo. En general, se veía bien, pero las prioridades han cambiado y todos estábamos metidos en otras cosas, así que decidí irme, pero hasta el día de hoy todavía nos estamos conectando y sentimos que deberíamos hacer otro disco un buen día.
MiM - El último sello discográfico de la banda MaYan es Dhyana (2018). ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación del álbum? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó?
HB - Joost van den Broek fue el productor y se grabó en los Países Bajos en su hermoso estudio. Por lo tanto, me uní a ellos en ese lugar en Holanda para encajar las voces.
MiM - ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de componer música, es un proceso colectivo, o son solo uno o quizás dos los que componen la banda?
HB - Puede ser realmente variado y diferente en algunos proyectos o bandas. Escribo la canción completa y empiezo a expresar mis melodías, luego escribo la letra sobre eso, o alguien ya la ha terminado, o podemos recopilar partes de la canción mediante el intercambio de archivos, y construyes, creas una canción: pero en lo que a mí respecta, la voz siempre me llega al final, es interesante ver cómo cuando creo una frase o melodía (en pseudo inglés primero) la canción está creciendo y qué tan intensa se vuelve cuando escuchas los resultados. Sobre todo, el proceso interno es muy satisfactorio.
MiM - Han pasado tres años desde que salió el último disco de la banda. ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de MaYan?
HB - Para ser honesto, no es mi decisión. Todo el mundo está involucrado en muchas otras cosas en este momento. Siempre estoy interesado en esto porque somos amigos y amo a esta banda. Es muy interesante para mí ser un artista que siempre quiso desarrollar su estilo al crear música y cantar, definitivamente, es un gran campo de juego donde hacer un gran arte.
MiM - ¿Qué bandas de la escena metal internacional me recomiendas escuchar?
HB - Tarea difícil para mí. ¡¿No estoy realmente actualizado estos días?! Me decantaría por todos los clásicos como Maiden Metallica, etc. Supongo que soy un poco de la vieja escuela porque todavía no uso cosas como Spotify.
Siempre me apego a la música que no es de metal cuando quiero disfrutar de la música, me refiero a mis canciones o álbumes favoritos personales (rara vez escucho álbumes, preparo canciones individuales, pero no me malinterpreten, escucho metal, pero no todo el tiempo).
MiM - ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias como cantante?
HB - Freddy Mercury, Axl Rose, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford (Metal o Rock)
MiM - ¿Cómo ha vivido el cierre y la pandemia hasta ahora?
HB - Esta es una pregunta dura y exigente, así que digo: ¡como un mierda!
MiM - ¿Cuándo podemos volver a verte de gira?
HB- Bueno, esperemos a ver cómo será el mundo lo antes posible. Extraño mucho mi antigua vida siendo un artista de gira.
MiM - Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.
HB - ¡Los amo y extraño! Los aficionados españoles eran muy apasionados y dedicados a mi música. En estos países latinos del sur se podría decir que el metal o la música rock en general es como una religión. Gracias por su apoyo sin fin a lo largo de los años.

HB - ¡Gracias! Y soy feliz en esta comunidad, ya sea de power sinfónico o lo que sea. Para mí, lo más importante del mundo se llama: ¡METAL!
Interview with Henning Basse.
Henning Basse is one of the most important vocalists in power metal. He is known for his works on Metallium, Firewind, Gamma Ray, Sons of Seasons, MaYan, Legions of the Night, Goditha, and Orpheus Blade, among many others. Here we review part of his career.
With this interview, a new member enters our staff: the journalist Raúl Cardona.
MiM - Hi Henning !! How are you? To begin this conversation, I would like to know how did you start in the world of music?
HB - Hi Raul pleased to “meet” you! I am alive and trying hard so all in all good. Oh well, it all started in a church choir when I was six years old. I wasn`t so let’s say convinced about the idea of getting together with a bunch of kids to sing in a church: very shy guy I was but somehow I got forced to do it. It came to the point where I enjoyed it more and more. Later on, it happened I´d joined my first real band at the age of 13, first shows, and so on.
MiM - Looking well back in your career and we talk about those beginnings of when you were part of bands like Metallium, Firewind, and Sons of Seasons? What memories do you have of those years? What teachings have been those that you consider has helped you in the present as a consecrated musician?
HB - Hahaha I could fulfill a whole book like three pieces of all bands or projects I was involved even the phrases with LMO or Uli Jon Roth..etc! Overall I am very “rich”, packed with experiences in my soul... thankful for all those years regarding touring, recording, dealing with people, situations, etc. All those years made me the person I truly am obviously and get to know stuff and being creative, traveling the world several times, making friends, building a network with kind musicians, it’s all I have ever asked for.
Metalium was and is in my veins. Sons of Seasons was a very interesting and creative side way to find out more about me as a songwriter and singer, you`ll never stop learning.
MiM - With Firewind, you recorded the album "Immortals" (Century Media, 2017). What can you tell me about this album? How was the recording process? In which recording studio was it carried out? How was working with Gus G and what is your current relationship with him?
HB - Yea great album it felt natural to do it. Vocals were produced by Dennis Ward in his own Studio, I did the rest of the vocals (choirs, adds, etc ) in my own studio. I was touring again with Gus back in 2015 with his solo band all over Europe throughout four weeks and we felt we should bring back Firewind on full force to write a killer album.
Meanwhile writing the first songs Gus felt it would be great to do a concept album. It’s always hard to top your previous albums or old songs...but the fans worldwide were digging immortals right away and I was proud of my work also the fact it goes way back with me and Gus back in 2007 I’d replaced their old singer on a whole world tour as a replacement singer. We became good friends since ever. It’s a good friendship, so yes, we`re still in contact and laughing out in our chats. Sometimes, I have to be honest I do miss this band sometimes as it was incredible energy going on stage.
MiM - With Metallium you recorded and had an impressive career. What can you tell me about it? Which album do you still like from the band's extensive discography? Do you think there may be an activation of the band in the not-too-distant future?
HB - Metalium was upfront with the first album right away a great success as we had great support and a great team around us. It all went real quick. I do like chapters one, two, and four. Four just because we`d returned to another type or flavor if you will of our songwriting, I am very selective when it comes to GOOD songs. It’s all about the songs and a good production also. Lars whipped me to create higher vocal lines so we could raise the bar a bit higher hahaha.
Due to the tragic death of Lars this year which was really painful.. consuming a lot of power speaking for myself, but the four of us ( MICHAEL EHRE, CHRIS CAFFERY, MATTHIAS LANGE ) decided to record an Homage a dedication for Lars so the people worldwide support our loss and share our grief with this very sad and tragic situation. We wanted to give a dignified dedication to the family and all friends. You can find “Never Surrender” on all channels like Spotify or YouTube.
This hole is hard to replace as Lars had his unique sound and kind of playing, plus he actually was Metalium so to speak he managed all kinds of stuff around Metalium.
MiM - How was the experience of playing live with Gamma Ray? What was it like working with Kai Hansen? How did the idea come about?
HB - I know Kai since I was nineteen or twenty years old and I had different rehearsals like tryouts with different bands in the same rehearsal building as Gamma Ray. I was this young guy looking for a band you know. He invited me one day to a kind of jam or rehearsal in his rooms, and as I was aware of that band it felt great to join them on that day. We became friends.
Years later I’d recorded choirs on their albums and I helped out on tour with my vocals also I was the one who introduced Henio Richter to them (later he joined Gamma Ray) I simply think it’s a perfect power metal band and they doing great, I love them and they are funny as hell.
MiM - You were around six years in the Symphonic Metal band Sons of Seasons. How was your inclusion in the band? How did you meet Oliver Palotai?
HB - I´d met Oliver in 2007 in Japan during touring he asked me if I would be interested to sing a few demos coming from his own stuff. He is a very unique songwriter and very inspiring and I felt right away I should give it a try. Coming from power metal or let’s say heavy metal high-pitched vocals it has shown me another path to work differently with my voice. Sons of Seasons were planned as a band, not a side project or something I suppose. All in all, it looked good but priorities have changed and everyone was included in other stuff so I decided to leave, but to this day we´re still connecting with each other and feels like we should do another record one fine day.
MiM - The last record label of the band MaYan is Dhyana (2018). How was the process of recording the album? In which recording studio was it carried out?
HB - Joost van den Broek was the producer and it was recorded in the Netherlands in his beautiful studio. Therefore, I joined them on-site in Holland to fit the vocals.
MiM - How is the creative process of composing music, is it a collective process, or is it just one or maybe two that make up the band?
HB - Can be really various and different on some projects or bands I’ll get the full song and I start to phrase my melodies then I write the lyrics on that or somebody has already finished words, or you might collect song parts via file sharing and you build, create a song: but as far as I concern vocals always comes at last to me it’s interesting of how when I create a phrase or melody (pseudo-English first) the song is growing and how intense it grows when you hear the results. Most of all the process within is very satisfying.
MiM - It's been three years since the band's last record came out. When will fans be able to hear new material from MaYan?
HB - To be honest, it’s not my call. Everyone is involved in many other things right now. I am always interested in this as we are friends and I do love this band. Is very interesting for me being an artist who always wanted to develop his style in creating music and singing it’s definitely a great playground for making great art.
MiM - What bands from the international metal scene do you recommend me to listen to?
HB - Hard task to me. I am not really updated these days?! I would go for all the classics like Maiden Metallica, etc. I guess I am a bit old school as I don’t use stuff like Spotify yet.
I always stick to nonmetal music when I want to enjoy music but sometimes my personal favorite songs or albums, (albums are rare to listen to I prepare single songs, but don’t get me wrong I do listen to metal but not all the time.)
MiM - What are your main influences as a singer?
HB - Freddy Mercury, Axl Rose, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford (Metal or Rock)
MiM - How have you experienced the lockdown and the pandemic so far?
HB - This is a tough and demanding question so I say: like FUCK!
MiM - When can we see you again on tour?
HB - Well, let’s hope how the world will look like asap. I miss my old life being a touring artist very very much.
MiM - Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
HB - I Love you and miss you! Spanish fans were very very hotblooded and dedicated to my music. In these south, Latin countries you could say metal or overall rock music is like a religion. Thank you for your never-ending support over the years.

HB - ¡Gracias! And I am happy in this community whether it’s symphonic power or whatsoever. To me, the most important thing in the world it’s called: METAL!
