MiM - Hola, mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con la banda de Rock and Roll, Glam Slam Boogie Woogie The Midnight Devils.
Sam Spade - Hola Raúl. Es un placer conocerte. Gracias por contactarnos y programar esta entrevista.
MiM - ¡Hola chicos! ¿Cómo estás? Gracias por aceptar chatear con Made in Metal.
Sam Spade - Estamos muy bien. Acabamos de regresar a casa de unos cuantos espectáculos salvajes en el medio oeste de los Estados Unidos. Estábamos apoyando a nuestros hermanos en Enuff Znuff en Chicago, IL. Aquí en los Estados Unidos, en nuestra área, hace un frío increíble y, mientras escribo esto, empieza a nevar. Tienes que tener un par bien grandes para salir con este clima y hacer shows, pero no lo haríamos de otra manera.
MiM - Para que a través de la entrevista los lectores puedan conocer a la banda, me gustaría que me contaras cómo fueron tus inicios. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar The Midnight Devils?
Sam Spade - The Midnight Devils en realidad comenzó en 2016 con Chris 'Sniper' Hineline y yo. Estábamos tocando en una banda tributo al estilo de los 80 y nos estábamos frustrando con la falta de espectáculos y de dirección. Decidimos salir como un grupo acústico nosotros dos y tocar en bares de pueblos pequeños del Medio Oeste de los Estados Unidos. Tomamos el nombre Midnight Devils de un álbum que habíamos lanzado con la otra banda y simplemente agregamos "The" al principio como The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Misfits. Fue muy trabajoso tocar en un bar ruidoso con solo dos muchachos y dos guitarras acústicas. Sin embargo, lo hicimos muy bien con el cabello, el maquillaje y la actitud general de fiesta. Algunas personas lo entendieron, pero otras nos odiaron desde el momento en que entramos por la puerta. Sabíamos que estábamos en algo especial.
Eventualmente conseguimos un baterista y comenzamos a hacer shows eléctricos completos. Hicimos nuestra propia gira para el festival Rocklahoma y el baterista de ese momento nos abandonó cuatro días después de la gira. Poco sabíamos que nuestras vidas cambiarían tan dramáticamente al día siguiente. Llamamos a Jimmy Mess en Chicago y estuvo dispuesto a terminar el resto de la gira. Conduje hasta Chicago y lo recogí y se aprendió las canciones en la camioneta, en el camino de regreso para unirse a la gira. Fue brillante y nos llevamos como una especie de banda de gitanos de mala calidad. De camino a casa, Jimmy decidió que quería mantener esta buena sensación, así que seguimos haciendo espectáculos.
Durante el primer año todavía tocábamos en bares pequeños y Jimmy nos dio la idea de desecharlo todo y dar el salto a giras más extensas por las costas. En 2018, lanzamos nuestro álbum debut “Something Bigger” e hicimos cuatro giras de punk rock DIY por todo Estados Unidos. Funcionó y gracias a Jimmy nunca miramos hacia atrás.
MiM - Sois una banda con una energía formidable en el escenario. Dime ¿cómo es un concierto de la banda? Cuando están tocando, ¿qué ofrecen al público?
Sam Spade - Sí, absolutamente, somos como esta bomba atómica cubierta de brillo rosa neón y manchada de lápiz labial que cae del cielo cuando llegamos al escenario. Para ser honesto, no es algo que nos propusimos hacer o algo de lo que incluso hablamos. Nos alimentamos de la energía que desprende la multitud que tenemos delante. El nivel de emoción siempre está por las nubes cuando subimos al escenario y tan pronto tocamos la primera nota, es simplemente la liberación más grande que alguien haya sentido. Traemos la energía porque así es como la música nos hace sentir. Puedes ver cómo la gente se queda boquiabierta cuando salimos al escenario. ¡O lo aman o lo odian!, pero es mejor que creas que saben que les espera un viaje increíble durante la próxima hora. Es un enorme empujón de energía positiva que aplasta a cualquiera que se interponga en su camino. Traemos el calor, la multitud responde y se vuelve loca, lo que nos hace jugar aún más fuerte, lo pegamos, lo dejamos y lo guardamos mojado.
MiM - ¿Cómo defines el sonido de la banda y cuáles son tus principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?
Sam Spade - Nos llamamos a nosotros mismos una banda de fiesta glam rock n roll. La gente siempre pregunta: "¿Qué significa eso?" Es difícil de definir porque no somos una banda de hair metal de los 80. Somos diferentes a pesar de que crecimos amando ese estilo de bandas. Personalmente, crecí con Kiss, Alice Cooper y Elvis. Sniper, nuestro guitarrista trae este virtuosismo de guitarra al estilo de Eddie Van Halen mezclado con la composición de canciones de Pete Townsend. Jimmy Mess ofrece este latido del corazón de Ramones en la batería que es implacable. Lo bueno es que no nos clasificamos en ninguna categoría y eso nos da la oportunidad de poder tocar con cualquier banda en cualquier lugar y simplemente encaja. Tocamos este emocionante estilo de música rock and roll de fiesta que combina grandes coros para cantar y ganchos masivos basados en guitarra. Es actitud, energía, sexualidad y valentía en su máxima expresión. Se ve muy bien y suena aún mejor. Estoy muy orgullosa de estar en una banda que tiene las pelotas para salir al escenario con lápiz labial y vestidos. No hay nadie más haciéndolo como nosotros.
MiM – Han estado tocando de costa a costa en varios escenarios a lo largo de los Estados Unidos. ¿Alguna experiencia que me puedas contar? ¿Algún concierto memorable que nunca olvidarás?
Sam Spade - Hemos realizado muchos espectáculos en todo el país, desde fiestas de lucha libre en parques de patinaje en Nueva Orleans hasta centros de artes escénicas donde abrimos para Yngwie Malmsteen en Florida. Somos perros callejeros y eso es realmente lo que nos impulsa a seguir esforzándonos. Siempre decimos que el modelo fue escrito por las bandas que nos precedieron. Saca un disco y toca en cada ciudad que puedas, difundiendo las buenas nuevas en el camino. Solo en 2021 tocamos en el M3 Preparty en Baltimore, Maryland, apoyamos a Yngwie en Florida y en Detroit, hicimos una gira por Texas con Pretty Boy Floyd y viajamos por el sur con nuestros hermanos en Enuff Znuff. La guinda del pastel fue recibir la invitación para tocar en el mundialmente famoso Whiskey A Go-Go en Hollywood, California. Estar en ese escenario donde tocaron todos nuestros héroes fue alucinante y surrealista. Como un niño de 16 años, siempre sueñas con llegar a Los Ángeles, pero en realidad hacerlo y ver tu nombre en la marquesina de Sunset Strip es simplemente increíble.
Sin embargo, los tres nunca estamos satisfechos y siento absolutamente que hay mucho más por lograr. No se trata de apoderarse de los Estados Unidos sino de conquistar el mundo entero.
MiM - El álbum debut de la banda titulado “Something Bigger” (2018) ha recibido excelentes críticas por parte de la prensa especializada y público en general. ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del álbum?
Sam Spade – “Something Bigger” fue una experiencia de aprendizaje increíble para nosotros. No teníamos idea de cómo lanzar nuestro propio álbum de forma independiente, así que todo fue de prueba y error hasta que lo hicimos. Grabamos este álbum en un estudio casero en Omaha, Nebraska con nuestro buen amigo y productor Greg Turner. Este fue el momento en que pusimos todas las fichas sobre la mesa y nos lanzamos.
Me gusta este disco por el simple hecho de que “Something Bigger” es donde empezó todo para nosotros. Hay cosas en ese álbum que me gustan y cosas que desearía que pudiéramos regresar y cambiar, pero en ese momento y lugar, era todo lo que necesitábamos para ponernos en camino de gira por el país. Se necesita mucho para hacer un álbum, desde la composición, la grabación, el arte, la producción, los videos y la promoción. Es una locura, pero todavía recuerdo cada detalle y lo emocionados que estábamos todos haciendo este álbum. Hicimos todo nosotros mismos y vendimos una buena cantidad de discos sin un sello discográfico ni ayuda externa. Estoy muy orgulloso de eso. Desde el momento en que salió “Something Bigger”, hemos aprendido mucho y tenemos un lote completamente nuevo de canciones listas para ser lanzadas al mundo.
MiM - ¿Cómo ha sido la pandemia y el confinamiento en estos dos últimos años?
Sam Spade - El virus COVID y la pandemia han sido extremadamente frustrantes para nosotros, como para todos los demás en el mundo. A principios de 2020, conseguimos la gira de nuestros sueños como teloneros de The Quireboys durante un mes por Estados Unidos. Hicimos dos semanas de espectáculos como teloneros de nuestros héroes y todo se detuvo en Nueva Orleans el 15 de marzo. Todos fueron enviados a casa y nadie sabía cuál iba a ser el futuro del rock and roll.
Estábamos muy deprimidos como la mayoría de los músicos y artistas porque las giras son nuestra vida. Nos tomamos el tiempo libre para escribir las canciones de nuestro próximo álbum. A principios de 2021, contratamos a Chip Znuff para que produjera nuestro segundo lanzamiento en su estudio de Chicago y obtuvimos un monstruo. MiM - ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?
Sam Spade - Estoy encantado de decir que estamos casi listos para lanzar este nuevo álbum. Las canciones han sido mezcladas y masterizadas por el electrizante Chris Steinmetz en Stonecutter Studios en Chicago y son la crema de la crema. En este momento, estamos terminando la carátula y estamos a punto de filmar el video del primer sencillo. Nuestro plan es lanzar el álbum justo antes de una gran gira para que reciba el impulso y el calor que se merece. Supongo que un lanzamiento de primavera de 2022 entrará en la temporada de gira de verano.
Todo está todavía tan en el aire con COVID que no queremos gastar nuestra carga demasiado pronto y volver a una situación de cierre. La paciencia ha sido el nombre del juego. Hemos estrenado algunas de nuestras nuevas canciones en nuestro set en vivo y nuestros fanáticos se han quedado boquiabiertos, así que sabemos que estamos en el camino correcto. Espere un álbum completo, un single en vinilo, CD, casetes y acceso digital en todas las plataformas. No habrá roca sin remover.
MiM - ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos este año?
Sam Spade - Estamos trabajando muy duro en este momento para tratar de romper y unirnos a esas giras más grandes. Chuck en Artist Worldwide y Tim en Pavement Music han estado subiendo el listón para nosotros en nuestro juego de gira y no podemos agradecerles lo suficiente. Hay una gran gira planeada para abril y mayo. Estamos trabajando para llenar nuestro calendario de verano con algunas fechas de festivales gigantes. Sam Spade - Hey Raul. It’s a pleasure meeting you. Thank you for reaching out and setting up this interview.
MiM - Hi guys! How are you? Thank you for agreeing to chat with Made in Metal.
Sam Spade - We are doing great. We just got back home from a wild few shows through the midwest United States. We were out supporting our brothers in Enuff Znuff in Chicago, IL. Here in the States in our area, it’s insanely cold and as I type this the snow is coming down. You’ve got to have some big ones to go out in this weather and do shows but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
MiM - So that through the interview readers can get to know the band, I would like you to tell me how were your beginnings. What memories do you have of those times? How did the idea of forming the band come about?
Sam Spade - The Midnight Devils actually started in 2016 with Chris ‘Sniper’ Hineline and myself. We were playing in an 80’s style tribute band and we were getting frustrated with the lack of shows and lack of direction. We decided to go out as a two-man acoustic group and play small-town bars around the Midwest United States. We took the name Midnight Devils from an album we had released with the other band and just added “The” to the beginning like The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Misfits. It was a lot of hard work playing in a loud bar with only two guys and two acoustic guitars. We did it up really big though with the hair, makeup, and overall party attitude. Some people got it but others hated us from the moment we walked in the door. We knew we were on to something special. Eventually, we got a drummer and started booking full electric shows. We booked our own tour to the Rocklahoma festival and the drummer at the time walked out on us four days into the tour. Little did we know our lives would change so dramatically the next day. We called up Jimmy Mess in Chicago and he was all in to finish the rest of the tour. I drove out to Chicago and picked him up and he learned the songs in the van on the way back down to join the tour. It was brilliant and we got along like some sort of sleazy gypsy gang. On the way home, Jimmy decided he wanted to keep this good feeling going so we kept booking shows. For the first year, we were still playing small bars and Jimmy hit us with the idea of scrapping it all and making a jump to more extensive touring to the coasts. In 2018, we released our debut album "Something Bigger", and did four DIY punk rock tours all over the United States. It worked and thanks to Jimmy we’ve never looked back.
MiM - You are a band with formidable energy on stage. Tell me how a concert of the band is? When they are playing, what do they offer to the public?
Sam Spade - Yes absolutely, we are like this neon pink glitter-covered lipstick-smeared atom bomb falling from the sky when we hit the stage. To be honest, though it’s not something we set out to do or something that we even talk about. We feed off the energy that the crowd in front of us is giving off. The excitement level is always through the roof as we take the stage and as soon as we hit that first note, it’s just the biggest release anyone’s ever felt. We bring the energy because that’s the way the music makes us feel. You can see people’s jaws drop when we walk out on stage. They either love it or hate it but you had better believe they know they are in for one hell of a ride for the next hour. It’s a huge positive energy push that rolls over anyone in its way. We bring the heat, the crowd responds and goes crazy, which makes us play even harder, we hit it and quit it and put it away wet.
MiM - How do you define the sound of the band and what are your main influences when composing new material?
Sam Spade - We call ourselves a glam rock n roll party band. People always ask, “What does that mean?” It’s hard to define because we aren’t an 80’s hair band. We are different even though we grew up loving that style of bands. Personally, I grew up on KISS, Alice Cooper, and Elvis. Sniper, our guitar player brings this shredding Eddie Van Halen style guitar virtuosity mixed with Pete Townsend songwriting. Jimmy Mess delivers this Ramones heartbeat on the drums that’s just relentless. The cool thing is we don’t lump ourselves into any category and that gives us the opportunity to be able to play with any band in any venue and it just fits. We play this exciting style of party rock n roll music that mixes huge sing-a-long choruses and massive guitar-based hooks. It’s attitude, energy, sexuality, and bravado at its finest. It looks really good and sounds even better. I’m so proud to be in a band that has the balls to walk out on stage wearing lipstick and dresses. There isn’t anyone else doing it like we are.
MiM - You have toured, playing from Coast to Coast on various stages throughout the US. Any experience you could tell me about? Some memorable concert that you will never forget?
Sam Spade - We have done so many shows all over the country, from death-match wrestling skate park parties in New Orleans to performing arts centers opening for Yngwie Malmsteen in Florida. We are road dogs and that’s really what drives us to keep pushing ourselves. Ever since Jimmy presented the idea to drop it all and hit the road we have seen the hard work pay off and the light keeps getting brighter. I think we all got into this as a way to get out of our cities and travel the world. We always say the blueprint was written by the bands that came before us. Put out a record and play in every city you possibly can, spreading the good word along the way. In 2021 alone we played at the M3 Preparty in Baltimore, Maryland, supported Yngwie in Florida, and in Detroit, we toured through Texas with Pretty Boy Floyd and traveled through the south with our brothers in Enuff Znuff. The icing on the cake was getting the invite to play the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood, California. Standing on that stage where all of our heroes played was mind-blowing and surreal. As a 16-year-old kid, you always dream of making it to LA but actually doing it and seeing your name on the marquee on the Sunset Strip is just unbelievable. The three of us are never satisfied though and I absolutely feel like there’s so much more to accomplish. It’s not about taking over the United States but about conquering the entire world.
MiM - The band's debut album entitled "Something Bigger" (2018) has received excellent reviews from the specialized press and the general public. In which recording studio did it take place? How was the process of recording and musical production of the album?
Sam Spade - "Something Bigger" was an incredible learning experience for us. We had no idea how to independently release our own album so everything was trial and error along the way. We recorded this album in a home studio in Omaha, Nebraska with our good friend and producer Greg Turner. This was the moment we laid all the chips on the table and just went for it. I like this record for the simple fact that "Something Bigger" is where it all started for us. There are things on that album I like and things I wish we could go back and change but at that time and place, it was everything we needed to get our asses on the road touring the country. There is so much that goes into doing an album, from the songwriting, the recording, the artwork, the production, the videos, and the promotion. It’s insane but I still remember every single detail and how excited we all were making this album. We did everything ourselves and sold a good amount of albums without a record label or any outside help. I’m proud as hell of that. Since the time Something Bigger came out, we have learned so much and have a completely new batch of songs ready to be released to the world.
MiM - How have the pandemic and confinement been in these last two years?
Sam Spade - The COVID virus and pandemic have been extremely frustrating for us much like everyone else in the world. In early 2020, we landed our dream tour opening for The Quireboys for a month across the United States. We did two weeks’ worth of shows opening for our heroes and everything came to a screeching halt in New Orleans on March 15th. Everyone was sent home and nobody knew what the future of rock n roll was going to be. We were very down like most musicians and artists because touring is our life. We took the downtime to write the songs for our upcoming album. In early 2021, we enlisted Chip Znuff to produce our sophomore release at his studio in Chicago and we came out with a monster. We started working with Chuck at Artist Worldwide booking shows and he helped us land a deal with Pavement Music. Therefore, over quarantine, we wrote and recorded a new album, signed our first record deal, and eventually broke free and did some of the biggest shows of our lives. That’s the beauty of rock n roll, you go from these crushing lows to the highest of highs in a matter of a few months. Now we are back on track and things are very exciting again. Tours are coming back and everyone is chomping at the bit to get this new album. The suspense is killing me ha, ha.
MiM - When will fans be able to hear new material from the band?
Sam Spade - I am thrilled to say that we are almost ready to release this new album. The songs have been mixed and mastered by the electrifying Chris Steinmetz at Stonecutter Studios in Chicago and they are the absolute cream of the crop. Right now, we are finishing up the artwork and about to shoot the video for the first single. Our plan is to release the album right before a big tour so it gets the push and the heat it deserves. I’m guessing a spring 2022 release going into the summer tour season. Everything is still so up in the air with COVID that we don’t want to blow our load too soon and go back into a shutdown situation. Patience has been the name of the game. We want to get everything right so we can just blow the roof off when the time is right. We have debuted a few of our new songs in our live set and our fans have just been floored so we know we are on the right track. Expect a full album, a vinyl single, CD’s, cassettes, and digital access across all platforms. There will be no rock unturned.
MiM - Tour project or concerts this year?
Sam Spade - We are working very hard right now to try and break out and join those bigger tours. Chuck at Artist Worldwide and Tim at Pavement Music have been raising the bar for us on our tour game and we can’t thank them enough. There is a big tour planned for April and May. We are working on filling up our summer schedule with a few giant festival dates. There is another return to LA and The Whisky a Go-Go being planned out. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the European tour finally is able to happen this year with Enuff Znuff. We have some huge stuff planned but we also have that punk rock side that lets us play at any greasy dive bar, house show, or basement party anywhere at any time. Nothing is off-limits and that’s the way we intend to keep it.
MiM - Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
Sam Spade - I am very excited for the future of The Midnight Devils and I can’t thank our fans, friends, and family enough for all the love and support they’ve shown us over the last few years. We started this thing ourselves in a basement in Nebraska with just a few ideas and we’ve been able to see both oceans and both borders of the United States. We don’t take any of this for granted and we know we couldn’t do any of this without all those people in our corners backing us from day one. We couldn’t do any of this without help from you Raul, so thank you so much for keeping Rock N Roll alive. This is just the start for The Midnight Devils and I truly feel like the sky is the limit. There is a demand for our style of glam slam party rock n roll and we are hell-bent on filling that hole over and over again.
