"2022 será el año de Umbilicus".
Vernon Blake es músico de bandas como Anarchus (guitar), Umbilicus (bajo) y Napalm Death (bajo en directo). Raúl Cardona repasa su carrera con estas bandas y planes futuros
MiM - ¡Hola Vernon! ¿Cómo estás? Gracias por aceptar hablar con Made in Metal España.
VB - Hola Raúl, estoy muy bien. Es un placer hablar contigo.
MiM - Vernon, cuéntame cómo funciona Anarchus con dos formaciones, cómo surgió la idea y qué beneficios trae a la banda.
VB - Bueno, conozco a Pancho y a la banda desde 1989 cuando lancé su primer ep "Final Fall of the Gods". Los traje a Tampa en 1990 para tocar en un show en celebración del lanzamiento de su ep. El espectáculo fue un gran éxito con Assuck y Paineater como apoyo. No pretendo hacer historia ni nada por el estilo, pero fue la primera vez que no hubo bandas de metal, punk o hardcore en cartel de Tampa, simplemente puro grindcore.
En 2004, Pancho tenía un show reservado en Juárez, MX y necesitaba un guitarrista, así que me lo pidió. Sin ensayos, nada, ¡directo al escenario y a trabajar! Esa noche estuvimos hablando y Pancho mencionó que quería hacer shows en los EE. UU., pero la formación actual tendría problemas para obtener las visas adecuadas y tendría dificultades para cruzar la frontera. Tengo un amigo llamado Mike Petrak que tocó la batería en el álbum de Amon (ex-Deicide, Hoffman Bros), así que sugerí que formáramos una versión gringa con otro buen amigo mío, Bob Babcock de Exhumed, en el bajo. Tocamos en algunos shows en los EE.UU., Canadá e incluso recibimos una invitación para tocar en el festival Obscene Extreme en la República Checa en el verano de 2017.
MiM - Desde hace algunos años, los fanáticos del Grindcore han estado esperando nuevo material de la banda. ¿Cuándo se lanzará nuevo material?
VB - Este es el departamento de Pancho. La formación estadounidense ha grabado un par de canciones pero nunca las ha lanzado.
MiM - Shane Embury ha comentado que sois grandes amigos. ¿Cuando lo conociste?
VB - Tuve la suerte de ser buen amigo de Scott Burns de los Morrisound Studios y me dijo que esta banda británica estaba por llegar, deberías conocerlos. Lo hice y nos llevamos bien de inmediato. Pasamos el rato y fumamos hierba durante toda la sesión. Esto fue durante la grabación del álbum “Harmony Corruption”. Entonces, he sido un buen amigo de la banda desde entonces.
MiM - ¿Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de tocar en vivo con Napalm Death?
VB - Surrealista en realidad. Nosotros (Napalm Death) estabámos en México para Obscene Extreme. En la siguiente gira por EE.UU., el guitarrista Mitch estaba trabajando en la reunión de su antigua banda Righteous Pigs y tenía un espectáculo reservado para el Maryland Metal Fest, por lo que Shane me pidió que tocara el bajo y él tocaría la guitarra para un espectáculo en Reina, Canadá. Estaba más que nervioso ya que también estábamos de gira con mis amigos cercanos Cannibal Corpse, tuve muchos ojos sobre mí esa noche, ja,ja. Supongo que lo hice bien. En 2019, Shane tuvo un problema con la renovación de su visa para viajar a los EE.UU., por lo que Barney me preguntó si podía reemplazarlo durante toda la gira. Tenía dos semanas para prepararme y mi mamá acababa de fallecer, así que fue un tiempo de locura para mi. La gira fue increíble con nuestros queridos amigos de Municipal Waste, con quienes hemos estado de gira antes. La mayor parte de los conciertos agotaron las entradas, y es una experiencia que nunca olvidaré.MiM - Umbilicus es un proyecto del que todos los medios están hablando. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? A veces se cree que los gustos musicales de los músicos de Death Metal y Grindcore son los de las bandas de géneros extremos. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?
VB - Bueno, la idea comenzó en 2000 con Jack Owen (Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Adrift) en la guitarra y Paul y yo escuchábamos mucho hard rock de principios de los 70, particularmente 1971 parece ser un año mágico para la música en general. Muchas grandes bandas como Grand Funk Railroad, Trapeze, May Blitz y Lucifer's Hammer.
Estábamos en Tornillo, Texas (Sonic Ranch) mientras Cannibal Corpse grababa su álbum, así que en el tiempo de inactividad, Jack, Paul y yo tocábamos algunos riffs de hard rock y surgió la idea de formar una banda. Después de veinte años, Paul y yo tuvimos la idea de resucitar el mismo proyecto, así que contactamos a Jack para ver si estaba interesado. No lo estaba, así que trabajé en una productora local con un tipo genial, Taylor Nordberg, que es un guitarrista fenomenal. Otro amigo sugirió que deberíamos preguntarle a Taylor, así lo hicimos y el resto es historia. Escribimos todas las canciones nuevas, pero necesitábamos un vocalista asesino para unirlo todo, por así decirlo. Entró Brian Stephenson de Canadá (L.O.R.E.)
MiM - ¿Cuándo debería ser el lanzamiento del álbum Umbilicus? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se llevó a cabo? ¿Quién fue su productor? ¿Cuál será el nombre del álbum?
VB - Tenemos diez canciones grabadas profesionalmente en Smoke & Mirrors Studio en Spring Hill, Florida (The Absense, Inhuman Condition, etc.) Es básicamente una producción propia con la inmensa ayuda de Jeremy (The Ansense, Venom Inc.) que grabó la batería para nosotros. No hay fecha establecida para la salida del disco y aún no tiene título, pero todo esto pronto se completará y lanzaremos un regalo al mundo con rock duro real y honesto.
MiM - ¿Cómo fue el proceso de escribir la música? ¿Es un proceso colectivo o solo le toca a uno de los músicos?
VB: Taylor escribió la mayor parte de las canciones con aportes de Paul y yo, y escribí una pista que Taylor ayudó a modificar, pero es un esfuerzo de colaboración.
MiM - ¿Cómo has vivido el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?
VB - Oh Dios, ¡no me hagas empezar! (risas). Diré que soy lo suficientemente afortunado de vivir en un estado donde el gobernador parece usar el pensamiento crítico y el sentido común, así que no lo hemos pasado tan mal como mis hermanos y hermanas en California y Nueva York.
MiM - ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos este año con Umbilicus o alguna de las bandas en las que estáis activos?
VB - Algunos planes que no tengo la libertad de divulgar en este momento, ¡pero "observa este espacio" ya que 2022 será el año de Umbilicus! ¡Próximamente habrá muchas cosas divertidas!
MiM - Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Vernon Blake play in bands like Anarchus (guitar), Umbilicus (bass) y Napalm Death (bass on stage). Raúl Cardona talks to him about his career with these bands and future plans.
MiM - Hi Vernon! How are you? Thank you for agreeing to speak with Made in Metal, Spain.
VB - Hola Raul, I'm doing great. It is a pleasure to speak with you.
MiM - Vernon, Tell me how Anarchus works with two lineups, how did the idea come about and what benefits does it bring to the band?
VB - Well, I have known Pancho and the band since 1989 when I released their first ep "Final Fall of the Gods". I brought them to Tampa in 1990 to play a show in celebration of their ep release. The show was a great success with Assuck and Paineater in support. I'm not claiming to be historical or anything but the show was the first time no metal, no punk/hardcore bands on the bill in Tampa, simply pure grindcore.
In 2004, Pancho had a show booked in Juarez, MX, and needed a guitarist so he asked me. No rehearsal nothing, straight to the stage and grind! That night we were talking and Pancho mentioned wanting to do shows in the US but the current line-up would have trouble obtaining the proper visas and would have difficulty crossing the border. I have a friend named Mike Petrak who played drums on the Amon (ex-Deicide, Hoffman Bros) album, so I suggested we could form a gringo version with another good friend of mine Bob Babcock from Exhumed on bass guitar. We've played a few shows in the US, Canada and we even got an invite to play Obscene Extreme festival in Czech Republic in the summer of 2017.
MiM - For some years now, Grindcore fans have been waiting for new material from the band. When will new material be released?
VB - This is Pancho's department. The US line-up has recorded a couple of songs but has never released them.
MiM - Shane Embury has commented that you are great friends. When did you meet him?
VB - I was fortunate to be good friends with Scott Burns of Morrisound Studios and he told me this British band is coming in, you should meet them. I did and we hit it off immediately. We hung out and puffed weed throughout the entire session. This was during the recording of “Harmony Corruption” album. So, I've been good friends with the band since.
MiM - Tell me about the experience of playing live with Napalm Death?
VB - Surreal actually. We (Napalm Death) were in Mexico for Obscene Extreme. On the following US tour, guitarist Mitch was in the midst of doing a reunion of his old band Righteous Pigs and had a show booked for the Maryland Metal Fest, so Shane asked me to play bass and he'd play guitar for a show in Regina, Canada. I was beyond nervous as we were also touring with my close friends Cannibal Corpse so many eyes upon me that night ha, ha. I guess I did ok. In 2019, Shane had an issue with renewing his visa for travel to the US so Barney asked if I could fill in for the entire tour. I had two weeks to prep and my Mom had just passed away so it was a crazy time for me. The tour was amazing with dear friends Municipal Waste, who we've toured with before. Most of the tour was Sold-Out and it's an experience I'll never forget. MiM - Umbilicus is a project that all the media are talking about. How did the idea come about? It is sometimes believed that the musical tastes of Death Metal and Grindcore musicians are those of extreme genre bands. What can you tell me about it?
VB - Well, the idea started in 2000 with Jack Owen (Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Adrift) on guitar, and Paul and I would listen to a lot of early 70´s hard rock, particularly 1971 seems to be a magical year for music in general. Lots of great bands like Grand Funk Railroad, Trapeze, May Blitz, and Lucifer's Hammer.
We were in Tornillo, Texas (Sonic Ranch) while Cannibal Corpse recorded their album, so in the downtime, Jack, Paul, and I would jam a few hard rock riffs and the idea came about we should form a band. Forward 20 years, Paul and I had the idea of resurrecting the same project so we contacted Jack to see if he was interested. He was not, so I worked at a production company locally with a cool dude, Taylor Nordberg, who is a phenomenal guitarist, so it was suggested by another friend we should ask Taylor, so we did and the rest is history. We wrote all new songs but we needed a killer vocalist to tie it all together, so to speak. Enter Brian Stephenson from Canada (L.O.R.E.)
MiM - When should the Umbilicus album release be? In which recording studio was it carried out? Who was your producer? What will be the name of the album?
VB - We have ten songs professionally recorded at Smoke & Mirrors Studio in Spring Hill, Florida (The Absense, Inhuman Condition, etc.) It's basically self-produced with immense help from Jeremy (The Ansense, Venom Inc.) who captured the drums for us. There’s no date set for the release and there’s no name as of yet, but all of this will soon be completed and we shall release a gift to the world with real, honest hard rock.
MiM - How was the process of writing the music? Is it a collective process or does it only fall to one of the musicians?
VB - The bulk of the tunes were written by Taylor with input from Paul and me and I wrote one track that Taylor helped tweak, but it's a collaborative effort.
MiM - How have you experienced the lockdown and the pandemic so far?
VB - Oh jeez, don't get me started. Jaja! I will say, I'm fortunate enough to live in a state where the governor seems to use critical thinking and common sense, so I haven't had it as bad as my brothers and sisters in California and New York.
MiM - Tour project or concerts this year with Umbilicus or any of the bands in which you are active?
VB - A few developments I'm not at liberty to divulge at the moment, but "watch this space" as 2022 will be the year of the Umbilicus! Lots of fun stuff coming soon!
