"Creo que el death metal actualmente está experimentando un renacimiento".
Hoy, 17 de febrero de 2022, sale el nuevo disco de la banda belga de Death Metal radicada en Amberes, Schizophrenia, su nuevo álbum 'Recollection of the Insane' sale hoy 17 de febrero y aprovechamos la fecha para publicar esta entrevista que tuvo nuestro colaborador José Raúl Cardona con el guitarrista Marty Van Kerckhoven.
MiM: Hola, mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con la banda de Death Metal Schizophrenia. ¡Hola tíos! ¿Cómo están? Gracias por aceptar chatear con Made in Metal.
S: ¡Estamos bien, gracias por recibirnos!
MiM: ¿Cuéntanos sobre los inicios de la banda? ¿Dónde y cómo se formó?
S: La banda se formó alrededor de 2017. Romeo y Ricky ya estaban tocando juntos en una banda de thrash metal en ese momento. Cuando decidieron cambiar a un estilo de metal más extremo, pensaron formar una nueva banda bajo el nombre de Schizophrenia. Romeo y yo ya tocábamos desde que teníamos 14 y 17 años, así que nos conocíamos desde hacía bastante tiempo en ese momento. Entonces, cuando decidieron comenzar, me contactaron para que fuera el guitarrista. En ese momento todavía necesitábamos un baterista. Ricky contactó a uno de nuestros buenos amigos Max Mayhem de Evil Invaders y nos presentó a Lorenzo Vissol. ¡No hace falta decir que inmediatamente nos dejó boquiabiertos y consiguió el puesto!
MiM: El Death Metal parece estar pasando por una muy buena etapa en cuanto a calidad y cantidad de bandas y lanzamientos. ¿A qué crees que se debe esto? ¿Qué bandas estás escuchando últimamente?
S: Creo que el death metal actualmente está experimentando un renacimiento. Lo mismo sucedió con el thrash metal hace un par de años. Estas cosas son un poco como las tendencias (que no tienen nada de malo). Si una banda está haciendo algo diferente/genial e inspira a suficientes personas, naturalmente seguirán más. Además, el thrash metal ha dejado de ser el centro de atención en los últimos años, dejando una vacante para que surja otro género. Creo que el death metal actualmente está llenando el vacío que ha dejado el thrash metal de alguna manera. Personalmente, me gusta quedarme con los clásicos (como Death, Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Deicide, etc.), aunque hay un par de bandas más recientes que realmente disfruto como Skeletal Remains y Blood Incantation, por ejemplo.
MiM: En cuanto al disco “Recollections Of The Insane” (Self-Release, 2022), es un excelente disco que ha recibido excelentes críticas por parte de la prensa especializada y público en general. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical? ¿Alguna anécdota que recuerdes?
S: Comenzamos a escribir "Recollections Of The Insane" a fines de 2020. El proceso de escritura fue, a veces, bastante complejo. Cuando estábamos escribiendo “Voices”, teníamos una imagen clara de cómo o qué queríamos que fuera y no queríamos alejarnos mucho de eso. Para “Recollections Of The Insane” queríamos desafiarnos un poco más musicalmente y llevar nuestra creatividad al siguiente nivel. Estábamos mucho más abiertos a la experimentación y la exploración general que nunca.
Algunas de las canciones se escribieron en un par de días, sin embargo, la mayoría tomó semanas o incluso meses para perfeccionarse, algo en lo que todos estuvimos de acuerdo. Como estábamos ansiosos por elevar nuestra música a un nivel superior, contactamos a Francesco Paoli de Fleshgod Apocalypse para que fuera el productor del álbum. Comenzamos a trabajar en las canciones con él en 2021. Fue un placer absoluto trabajar con él y nos ayudó mucho a alcanzar nuestras metas. Lo grabamos en el estudio Project Zero donde previamente habíamos grabado “Voices”. El álbum fue mezclado, masterizado y grabado por Yarne Heylen. Habíamos trabajado con él en el pasado y estábamos muy satisfechos con los resultados, por lo que volver fue una obviedad para nosotros.
MiM: A nivel musical, cuando escribes música. ¿Cuáles son sus referencias?
S: Todos tenemos influencias muy diversas que van desde la música clásica, el jazz, la fusión hasta el heavy metal y, por supuesto, el death metal. Creo que cuando se crea música y se intenta hacer algo único, es esencial escuchar estilos musicales divergentes. Obviamente, las grandes influencias son las bandas clásicas de death metal de la vieja escuela de finales de los 80 y principios de los 90. Nos inspiramos en estas bandas, pero crear nuestro propio toque/sonido y estilo es de fundamental importancia para nosotros.
MiM: ¿Cómo has vivido el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?
S: Esta pandemia ha sido implacable para todo el sector cultural. Casi todos nuestros shows fueron cancelados, incluidos los últimos tres días de nuestra gira debut en marzo. No hacer conciertos ha sido difícil, pero tratamos de tomarlo como una oportunidad y mantenernos resistentes. Estar encerrados nos dio mucho tiempo para escribir y perfeccionar el nuevo álbum, que fue genial.
MiM: ¿Cómo es un concierto de Schizophrenia? Como banda, cuando tocan en vivo, ¿qué ofrecen a los fanáticos y al público en general?
S: Un concierto de Schizophrenia es una locura energética absoluta. Queremos transmitir este estallido de sonido y energía a la multitud, emocionarlos y emocionarnos. Queremos darles una noche para recordar.
MiM: ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos este año?
S: Teníamos planeada una gira de un mes desde finales de febrero hasta finales de marzo junto con Evil Invaders. Desafortunadamente, ha sido cancelado debido a la situación actual de Covid. La cancelación, por supuesto, fue un gran golpe para nosotros, pero seguramente habrá muchas más grandes giras planeadas en el futuro. En abril haremos una mini gira en los Países Bajos una vez más con Evil Invaders y Cryptosis. ¡Finalmente, estaremos tocando en abril además de un par de conciertos individuales!
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.
S: Queremos agradecer a todos nuestros fans por el gran apoyo que hemos recibido hasta ahora. La acogida por parte del público y la prensa de los tres primeros singles (“Cranial Disintegration”, “Sea of Sorrow”, “Inside The Walls Of Madness”) ha sido estupenda hasta el momento. ¡Mantén los ojos bien abiertos porque tenemos muchas más cosas emocionantes por venir! ¡Esperamos verlos a todos pronto en algún lugar del camino!

"I think death metal is currently undergoing a revival"
Today, February 17, 2022, the Antwerp-based Belgian Death Metal band Schizophrenia, release a new album, "Recollection of the Insane" and we take the opportunity to publish this interview that our collaborator Raúl Cardona had with guitar player Marty Van Kerckhoven.
MiM: Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with the Death Metal band Schizophrenia. Hi guys!!! How are you? Thank you for agreeing to chat with Made in Metal.
S: We’re good, thank you for having us!
MiM: Tell us about the beginnings of the band? Where and how was it formed?
S: The band formed around 2017. Romeo and Ricky were already playing in a thrash metal band together at that time. When they decided they wanted to shift to a more extreme style of metal they wanted to form a new band under the name Schizophrenia. Romeo and I were already jamming since we were 14 and 17 so we knew each other for quite a while at that time. So, when they decided to start something new, they reached out to me to be the guitarist. At that point, we still needed a drummer. Ricky reached out to one of our good friends Max Mayhem from Evil Invaders and he introduced us to Lorenzo Vissol. Needless to say, he immediately blew us away and he got the gig!
MiM: Death Metal seems to be going through a very good stage in terms of the quality and quantity of bands and releases. What do you think this is due to? What bands are you listening to lately?
S: I think death metal is currently undergoing a revival. The same thing happened with thrash metal a couple of years ago. These things are a bit like trends (which there’s nothing wrong with). If one band is doing something different/ cool and inspires enough people, more will naturally follow. In addition, thrash metal has been moving out of the spotlight in the last couple of years leaving a vacancy for another genre to rise. I think death metal is currently filling the void that thrash metal has left in a way. Personally, I like to stick to the classics (like Death, Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Deicide, etc.), though there are a couple of more recent bands that I really enjoy like Skeletal Remains and Blood Incantation for example.
MiM: As for the album “Recollections Of The Insane” (Self-Release, 2022), it is an excellent album that has received excellent reviews from the specialized press and the general public. What can you tell me about this album? In which recording studio did it take place? How was the process of recording and music production? Any anecdote you remember?
S: We started writing “Recollections Of The Insane” around late 2020. The writing process was, at times, quite complex. When we were writing Voices, we had a clear-cut image of how or what we wanted it to be and we didn’t want to stay away much from that. For “Recollections Of The Insane” we wished to challenge ourselves a bit more musically and take our creativity to the next level. We were way more open to experimentation and general exploration than we ever were.
Some of the songs were written in a couple of days, the majority, however, took weeks or even months to perfect into something we all agreed on. Since we were eager to elevate our music to a higher level we reached out to Francesco Paoli from Fleshgod Apocalypse to be the producer of the album. We started working on the songs with him in 2021. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and he aided us greatly in reaching our goals. We recorded it at Project Zero studio where we had previously recorded “Voices”. The album was mixed, mastered, and recorded by Yarne Heylen. We had worked with him in the past and were very pleased with the results so going back was a no-brainer for us.
MiM: On a musical level, when you write music. What are your references?
S: All of us have very diverse influences ranging from classical music, jazz, fusion to heavy metal, and of course death metal. I think when creating music and attempting to make something unique, listening to diverging styles of music is essential. Quite obviously big influences are the classic old-school death metal bands of the late 80s and early 90s. We take inspiration from these bands but creating our own twist/ sound and style is of fundamental importance to us.
MiM: How have you experienced confinement and the pandemic so far?
S: This pandemic has been relentless to the entire cultural sector. Almost all our shows were canceled including the last three days of our debut tour in March. Not playing shows has been tough but we tried to take it as an opportunity and stay resilient. Being under a lockdown gave us a lot of time to write and perfect the new album which was great.
MiM: What is a Schizophrenia concert like? As a band, when you perform live, what do you offer to the fans and the general public?S: A Schizophrenia concert is absolute energetic madness. We want to convey this outburst of sound and energy to the crowd, get them excited and moving. We want to give them a night to remember.
MiM: Tour project or concerts this year?
S: We had a month-long tour planned from the end of February till the end of March together with Evil Invaders. Unfortunately, it has been canceled due to the ongoing Covid situation. The cancellation, of course, was a huge blow for us but surely there will be many more big tours planned in the future. In April we’ll be doing a mini-tour in the Netherlands once more with Evil Invaders and Cryptosis. Finally, we’ll be playing in April in addition to a couple of single gigs!
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
S: We want to thank all our fans for the great support we’ve received so far. The reception by the public and press of the first three singles ("Cranial Disintegration", "Sea of Sorrow", "Inside The Walls Of Madness") has been great so far. Keep your eyes peeled because we have a lot more exciting stuff coming up! We hope to see all of you soon somewhere on the road!
