"¡Un concierto de Dawnrider es lento, profundo y duro!".
Raúl Cardona estuvo conversando con los músicos de Dawnrider, banda de Doom Metal de Portugal, radicados en Lisboa, quienes este mes de febrero 2022 sacarán su nuevo disco, “The Fourth Dawn”, con Alma Mater Records, sello discográfico fundado por Fernando Ribeiro, más conocido por su papel como vocalista de Moonspell
MiM: ¡¡Hola chicos!! ¿Cómo estás? Gracias por acceder a esta entrevista para los lectores de Made in Metal.
Diogo Simões: ¡Saludos, Raúl! Para empezar, apreciamos y agradecemos esta amable oportunidad.
MiM: Son una banda con varios años en la escena Doom Metal. Entonces, para los que aún no los conocen, me gustaría que me contaran cómo fueron esos inicios.
Hugo Conim: Hola Raul, antes que nada, gracias por el interés en Dawnrider. La banda comenzó en el verano de 2004; éramos solo un grupo de amigos que decidimos tocar juntos música lenta y pesada.
MiM: El álbum debut de la banda titulado “Alpha Chapter” (Raging Planet, 2007), es un álbum que suena muy bien. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Qué canciones de este álbum no pueden dejar de sonar en vivo?
Hugo Conim: Tengo muchos buenos recuerdos de aquellos tiempos. Solíamos hacer muchas giras en ese entonces, muchas historias de carretera y esas amistades forjadas entre los muchachos que tocaban juntos en ese momento permanecerán para siempre.
En nuestros próximos shows, planeamos tocar "Keep on Riding" de ese disco, y tal vez "Altamont Nation". Personalmente, también me gustan mucho “Divinity Revealed” y “Shattered Love”.
MiM: Su último CD, “The Fourth Dawn” (Alma Mater Records, 2022) que saldrá a la venta el 18 de febrero, tiene un sonido sorprendente, fiel al Doom Metal más sublime y auténtico del panorama musical mundial. El álbum ¿de qué trata? ¿Cuál es el concepto musical? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción musical? ¿Cuál es el mensaje que querían transmitir? ¿De qué tratan las letras de los temas?
Filipe Relêgo: Debido a algunos contratiempos en estos últimos tres o cuatro años, podemos decir que a veces fue un poco frustrante. Tuvimos un cambio en nuestra formación y con eso nos devolvió al principio, lo que requirió descartar algo del material hecho y escribir varias canciones nuevas para “The Fourth Dawn”. Sin embargo, desde el primer momento nos hemos propuesto un sonido inspirado en la esencia misma del Doom de la vieja escuela, y creo que lo logramos.
“The Fourth Dawn” es un estreno con esta formación. Trabajamos tranquilos. bien como un todo. Todos colaboramos durante el proceso creativo, así como en todas las etapas de creación de una canción. La mayor parte de nuestro proceso se hace juntos en la sala de ensayo. Nos gritamos unos a otros, murmuramos, bebemos (cerveza, principalmente), pero sobre todo trabajamos y tocamos duro. Todas las ideas son bienvenidas. Trabajamos en torno a ellos juntos para encontrar lo que se siente mejor para todos, "The Fourth Dawn" es el resultado de eso.
Todo el concepto del álbum gira en torno al final inminente que vivimos todos los días, sobre la "puerta trasera" al caos que nosotros, como humanos, tendemos a abrir de par en par y, la mayoría de las veces, conscientemente nos olvidamos de cerrar. Insistimos para favorecer nuestra desaparición. Aun así, siempre hay una opción. Al final todo depende del camino que elijas tomar. La letra de “The Fourth Dawn” es un reflejo de estos temas.
MiM: Excelente trabajo de carátula del disco. ¿Quién estaba a cargo?
Filipe Relêgo: Sí, efectivamente. A cargo de la obra de arte estuvo un extraordinario artista portugués: Victor Costa. Ha trabajado para bandas como Moonspell, Filli Nigrantium Infernalium, Ironsword, Decayed y otras.
MiM: ¿Qué esperas de este nuevo álbum?
João Ventura: Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde el álbum anterior “Third Crusade”, por lo que es una gran e increíble oportunidad para volver a estar en contacto con nuestros fanáticos y todas las personas que nos siguen y están ansiosas por este nuevo álbum de Dawnrider (¡como hacemos nosotros!). Además, después de la partida de Chico, será el primer álbum de estudio con nuestro nuevo vocalista Filipe Relêgo (Viking), quien aportó un enfoque diferente a nuestro sonido, manteniendo siempre vivo el espíritu doom en nuestras canciones.
MiM: Este álbum ha sido creado en medio del encierro de esta pandemia. ¿Cómo han afectado estas condiciones la forma en que trabajas en este álbum?
Filipe Relêgo: Como dije antes, a pesar de algunos contratiempos, hemos trabajado en estas canciones durante los últimos cuatro años. Fuimos al estudio a grabar el material en diciembre de 2019, y la pandemia en Portugal comenzó a aparecer alrededor de marzo de 2020. Entonces, todo el proceso creativo precedió a lo peor de este maldito brote de pandemia. Fue mezclado y masterizado nada menos que por el Sr. Tony Reed (quien trabajó con Saint Vitus y toca en Mos Generator) en agosto de 2020 y, finalmente, el álbum estaba terminado y listo. De todos modos, la situación de la pandemia se agravó y, como se pueden imaginar, definitivamente complicó la vida de músicos, bandas, sellos discográficos y prácticamente todos en el negocio de la música. No fuimos la excepción, ya que tuvimos que esperar un poco más de lo esperado para poder lanzar “The Fourth Dawn”.
João Ventura: Pero había un lado positivo en todo esto, nunca hemos dejado de escribir música y los ensayos continuaron, así que podemos avanzar que tenemos mucho material nuevo esperando ver la luz del día.
MiM: En relación a presentar el álbum “The Fourth Dawn” (Alma Mater, 2022) en vivo. ¿Cómo dirías que es un concierto de Dawnriders?
João Ventura: ¡Lento, profundo y duro!
MiM: Normalmente cuando lanzas un nuevo disco, lo normal después es hacer una gira. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
João Ventura: ¡Definitivamente tocar en tantos conciertos como sea posible! Lo extrañamos un poco, ¿sabes?
MiM: ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como Alma Mater Records a una banda como Dawnrider para establecerse en la escena?
João Ventura: Es una gran oportunidad para llegar a un público más amplio, seguramente conocer nuestro trabajo y con eso, quién sabe, aumentar nuestra base de seguidores, pero siempre manteniéndonos fieles a nuestra esencia y estilo, como lo hacemos desde nuestros inicios.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.
Dawnrider: ¡El Ascenso de la Orden del Amanecer es inminente! ¡Que haya DOOM! ¡2022 es EL año!

Raúl Cardona was talking with the musicians of Dawnrider, a Doom Metal band from Portugal, based in Lisbon, who this February 2022 will release their new album, “The Fourth Dawn”, with Alma Mater Records, a record label founded by Fernando Ribeiro, best known for his role as the lead singer of Moonspell.
MiM: Hi guys!! How are you? Thank you for accessing this interview for Made in Metal readers.
Diogo Simões: Greetings, Raul! To start with, we appreciate and thank you for this kind opportunity.
MiM: They are a band with several years in the Doom Metal scene. So, for those who don't know them yet, I would like you to tell me about how those beginnings were?
Hugo Conim: Hello Raul, first of all, thank you for your interest in Dawnrider. The band started in the summer of 2004; we were just a group of friends who decided to play slow and heavy music together.
MiM: The band's debut album entitled “Alpha Chapter” (Raging Planet, 2007), is a very good sounding album. What memories do you have of those times? What songs from this album can't stop playing live?
Hugo Conim: I do have lots of good memories of those times. We used to tour a lot back then, lots of road stories, and those friendships forged between the guys who played together at the time will remain forever.
On our next shows, we’re planning to play “Keep on Riding” from that record, and maybe “Altamont Nation”. Personally, I also really like “Divinity Revealed” and “Shattered Love”.
MiM: Your latest record CD “The Fourth Dawn” (Alma Mater Records, 2022) will go on sale on February 18, has a surprising sound, faithful to the most sublime and authentic of Doom Metal in the world music scene. The album what is it about? What is the musical concept of the album? How was the process of recording and music production? Who was in charge of the musical production? What is the message they wanted to convey? What are the lyrics of the themes about?
Filipe Relêgo: Due to a few setbacks along this last three to four years, we can say that sometimes it was a bit frustrating. We had a change in our line-up and with that, it kind of threw us back to the start, which required us to discard some material done and write several new songs for “The Fourth Dawn”. Nevertheless, from the very start, we’ve set our minds for a sound inspired by the very essence of old-school Doom. And I think we accomplished that.
“The Fourth Dawn” is a premiere with this line-up. And we work quite well as a whole. We all pitch in during the creative process as well as on all the stages of creating a song. The biggest part of our process is done together, in the rehearsal room. We shout at each other, mumble, drink (beer, mostly) but mainly we work and play hard. All ideas are welcome. We work around them together to find what feels better to all, “The Fourth Dawn” is the result of that.
The whole concept of the album revolves around the impending end we live every day, about the “backdoor” to the chaos that we as humans tend to open wide and, most of the time, consciously forget to close. We insist to favor our demise. Even so, there’s always a choice. In the end, it all depends on which path you choose to take. The lyrics of “The Fourth Dawn” are a reflection of these issues.
MiM: Excellent artwork of the disc. Who was in charge?
Filipe Relêgo: Yes, indeed. In charge of the artwork was an extraordinary Portuguese artist: Victor Costa. He has worked for bands such as Moonspell, Filli Nigrantium Infernalium, Ironsword, Decayed, and others.
MiM: What do you expect from this new album?
João Ventura: It has passed a long time since the previous album “Third Crusade”, so it’s a great and awesome opportunity to get back in touch with our fans and all the people that follow us and are eager for this new album of Dawnrider (as we do!). Also, after the departure of Chico, it will be the first studio album with our new vocalist Filipe Relêgo (Viking), who brought a different approach to our sound, always keeping the doomy spirit alive and well in our songs.
MiM: This album has been created in the midst of the lockdown of this pandemic. How have these conditions affected the way you work on this album?
Filipe Relêgo: As said before, in spite of a few mishaps, we’ve worked on these songs for the last four years. We went to the studio to record the material in December of 2019, and the pandemic in Portugal started to appear about March 2020. So, all the creative processes preceded the worst of this goddam pandemic outbreak. It was mixed and mastered by no other than Mr. Tony Reed (who worked with Saint Vitus and plays in Mos Generator) in August of 2020, and, finally, the album was done and ready. Anyway, the pandemic situation aggravated and, as you can imagine, it definitely complicated lives for musicians, bands, record labels, and practically everyone in the music business. We were no exception since we had to wait a bit longer than expected in order to release “The Fourth Dawn”.
João Ventura: But there was a silver lining in all this, we’ve never stopped writing music and rehearsals kept on, so we can advance that we have lots of new material waiting to see the light of day.
MiM: In relation to introducing the album “The Fourth Dawn” (Alma Mater, 2022) live. How would you say it's a Dawnrider concert?
João Ventura: Slow, deep, and hard!
MiM: Normally when you release a new album, the normal thing afterward is to have a tour. What plans do you have to promote this album?
João Ventura: Definitely to play a lot of gigs as possible! We do kind of miss it, you know?
MiM: What can a record label like Alma Mater Records offer to a band like Dawnrider to establish in the scene?
João Ventura: It’s a great opportunity to reach a wider audience, surely get to know our work and with that, who knows, increase our fans base, but always keeping faithful and true to our essence and style, as we do since our very beginning.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
Dawnrider: The Rise of The Order of Dawn is imminent! Let There Be DOOM! 2022 is THE year!
