Exhorder estan considerados pioneros y creadores del sonido Groove que después fue popularizado por bandas como Pantera y Machine Head. Es por eso que Made in Metal conversa Kyle Thomas, líder, fundador y vocalista de la banda para conocer sobre la historia de la banda y sobre sustitución planes más próximos.

MiM: Exhorder es considerado un pionero y creador del sonido Groove que luego fue popularizado por bandas como Pantera y Machine Head. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso? ¿Cómo fueron los inicios de la banda? ¿Cómo era el panorama en esos años?

EX: Bueno, es sumamente halagador ser considerado un pionero y creador del sonido. No sé cuánto "inventamos" o lo que sea, pero sí sé que definitivamente fuimos una de las primeras bandas que realmente lo hizo funcionar. En los primeros días, realmente no pensábamos mucho en giras y acuerdos discográficos. Al menos yo no lo hice. Estábamos mayormente preocupados por tocar shows geniales frente a mis amigos y descubrir la próxima forma en que me iba a drogar o emborrachar, ¡ja, ja! Nueva Orleans fue explosiva en los años 80 y 90, no sé si he visto algo tan especial desde entonces.

MiM: “The Law Album” (Roadrunner Records, 1992) celebra este año su aniversario. Han pasado treinta años desde su lanzamiento. ¿Qué planes tenéis para celebrar el lanzamiento de este gran disco? ¿Qué canciones de este álbum no puedes dejar de tocar en vivo?

EX: Dissonance Records acaba de relanzar nuestros dos primeros álbumes en un CD, con un gran empaque también. De lo contrario, realmente no tengo ningún plan para celebrar el álbum. Estoy más preocupado por lo que estamos haciendo en el futuro. Nunca lo escucho. “(Cadence of) the Dirge” y “Unforgiven” suelen ser canciones que casi siempre están en nuestro set en vivo. A veces sacamos “The Law”.

MiM: El último álbum de la banda titulado “Mourn the Southern Skies” (2019) tiene un sonido sorprendente. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿qué puedes decirme sobre él? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar?

Ex: Siempre es mucho más divertido grabar un álbum cuando realmente sabes lo que estás haciendo, ¡ja, ja! En los primeros días, no sabíamos mucho sobre el proceso. Todo era analógico y no había mucho presupuesto. Hoy tienes que esforzarte mucho para hacer un álbum que suene terrible. Grabamos en los estudios OCD aquí en Metairie Louisiana. Sónicamente, suena como todo lo que siempre esperábamos y soñamos que sonaría un álbum que grabamos.

MiM: A nivel musical, cuando se trata de escribir música. ¿Cuáles son tus mayores influencias?

Ex: Realmente podría irme por muchas tangentes diferentes aquí, porque escucho mucho más que solo heavy metal. Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Queen, todos ellos tuvieron una gran influencia en cómo haría un álbum, eso es seguro. Pero me encanta el viejo funk de los 70 y los 60, los primeros artistas country clásicos, mucho punk rock y hardcore, y también muchas cosas de la nueva ola de los 80. También trato de sacar influencias de mucho de eso. Siento que, si lo hago, puede que no haya muchas otras personas que toquen el estilo de música que yo hago con las mismas influencias. Ayuda a hacer que lo que hago suene diferente a ellos.

MiM: ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?

Ex: ¡Ojalá este año! Estamos trabajando en ello.

MiM: Sé que eres parte de Trouble como vocalista. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre los próximos pasos de la banda?

Ex: Lo mismo, espero que este año. Tenemos un álbum en proceso en este momento, las cosas se mueven muy lentamente en el mundo de Trouble.

MiM: Kyle te he visto muy activo en las redes sociales apoyando y ayudando a muchas víctimas. Una obra que habla de tu grandeza como ser humano. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

Ex: Yo mismo fui un refugiado durante el huracán Katrina. Todo era muy aterrador, y yo estaba solo con dos niños pequeños. Ni siquiera sabía si tenía un hogar al que volver. Mucha gente se acercó para ayudarme, y nunca lo olvidé. Trato de ayudar tanto como puedo cuando puedo, y si no puedo, al menos trato de facilitar que alguien obtenga ayuda de un lugar que pueda usar como recurso.

MiM: Kyle sé que te afectó mucho la noticia de la muerte de Eric Wagner, por quien profesabas un gran respeto. ¿Me podrías comentar?

Ex: Ese fue un día muy triste. Era el cumpleaños de mi esposa y acababa de terminar el festival Psycho Las Vegas en Las Vegas. Estábamos a punto de comenzar a celebrar su cumpleaños cuando recibí la noticia. Me sentí muy mal por mi esposa, porque ella estaba lista para una celebración de cumpleaños y terminó consolándonos a mí ya muchos de nuestros queridos amigos que conocían muy bien a Eric. Pero ese es el tipo de persona que es mi esposa. Aprovechamos al máximo su cumpleaños, pero gran parte fue levantar una copa por Eric, llorar y compartir grandes historias. Siempre será una de mis mayores influencias, y siempre ha sido un honor servir las canciones que ayudó a crear.

MiM: ¿Planes de gira o conciertos en los próximos meses para Exhorder?

Ex: Como actualmente nos estamos enfocando en el nuevo álbum, todo lo que realmente tenemos programado para este año es Maryland Death Fest, Alcatraz Fest en Bélgica, Brutal Assault Fest en República Checa y Party San Fest en Alemania.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestro lectores.

Ex: Realmente estamos verdaderamente agradecidos por todo el apoyo que todos han brindado en el amor que se nos ha mostrado. Haber pasado tantos años lejos y volver con más amor del que nunca hemos tenido es increíble. Exhorder is considered a pioneer and creator of the Groove sound that was later popularized by bands like Pantera and Machine Head. That's why Made in Metal talks to Kyle Thomas, leader, founder, and vocalist of the band to learn about the history of the band and about upcoming replacement plans.

MiM: Exhorder is considered a pioneer and creator of the Groove sound that was later popularized by bands such as Pantera and Machine Head. Tell me about it? How were the beginnings of the band? How was the scene in those years?

EX: Well, it is extremely flattering to be considered a pioneer and creator of the sound. I don’t know how much we “invented” or whatever, but I do know that we were definitely one of the earlier bands really making it work. In the very early days, we really didn’t think much about touring and record deals. At least I didn’t. I was mostly worried about playing cool shows in front of my friends and figuring out the next way I was going to get high or drunk, ha ha! New Orleans was explosive in the 80s and 90s, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything quite that special since.

MiM: “The Law Album” (Roadrunner Records, 1992) is celebrating its anniversary this year. Thirty years have passed since its launch. What plans do you have to celebrate the release of this great album? What songs from this album can’t you stop playing live?

EX: Dissonance Records just re-released both of our first two albums on one CD, with great packaging as well. Otherwise, I really don’t have any plans to celebrate the album. I’m more concerned with what we are doing moving forward. I never listen to it. “(Cadence of) the Dirge” and “Unforgiven” are usually songs that are almost always in our live set. Sometimes we whip out “The Law”. 

MiM: The band’s latest album titled “Mourn the Southern Skies” (2019) has a surprising sound. Looking back, what can you tell me about him? How was the recording and production process? In which recording studio did it take place?

Ex: It is always much more fun to record an album when you actually know what you are doing, haha! In the early days, we didn’t know a lot about the process. Everything was analog, and there wasn’t much budget. Today you have to try really hard to make a terrible-sounding album. We recorded at OCD studios here in Metairie Louisiana. Sonically, it sounds like everything we always hoped and dreamed an album we recorded would sound like.

MiM: On a musical level, when it comes to writing music. What are your biggest influences?

Ex: I could really go off on a lot of different tangents here because I listen to a lot more than just heavy metal. Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Queen, they all had a great influence on how I would do an album, that’s for sure. But I love old 70s and 60s funk, the early classic country artists, a lot of punk rock and hardcore, and a lot of 80s new wave stuff also. I try to pull influence off of a lot of that as well. I feel like if I do, there may not be a lot of other people that play the style of music that I do with the same influences. It helps to make what I do sound different from them.

MiM: When will fans be able to hear new material from the band?

Ex: Hopefully this year! We are working on it.

MiM: I know that you are part of Trouble as a vocalist. What can you tell me about the next steps of the band?

Ex: The same thing, hopefully, this year, haha! We have an album in the works at this time, things just move really slowly in the world of Trouble. 

MiM: Kyle I have seen you very active on social networks supporting and helping many victims. A work that speaks of your greatness as a human being. What can you tell me about it?

Ex: I myself was a refugee during Hurricane Katrina. Everything was very frightening, and I was by myself with two small children. I didn’t even know if I had a home to go back to. A lot of people reached out to help me, and I never forgot it. I try to help as much as I can when I can, and if I can’t, I at least try to facilitate someone getting help from a place that they could use as a resource.

MiM: Kyle I know you were very affected by the news of the death of Eric Wagner, for whom you professed great respect. Could you comment to me?

Ex: That was a very sad day. It was my wife’s birthday, and Psycho Las Vegas fest in Las Vegas had just come to an end. We were about to get started celebrating her birthday when I received the news. I felt so badly for my wife because she was ready for a birthday celebration and ended up consoling me and a lot of our dear friends that knew Eric very well. But that is just the kind of person my wife is. We made the best of her birthday, but a lot of it was raising a glass for Eric, crying, and sharing great stories. He will always be one of my greatest influences, and it has always been my honor to serve the songs that he helped craft.

MiM: Tour plans or concerts in the coming months for Exhorder?

Ex: As we are currently focusing on the new album, all we really have scheduled for this year is Maryland Death Fest, Alcatraz Fest in Belgium, Brutal Assault Fest in the Czech Republic, and Party San Fest in Germany.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

Ex: We really are truly grateful for all of the support that everyone has given in the love we have been shown. To have spent so many years away and come back with more love than we have ever had is amazing. I’ve done a lot of work in a lot of different bands, and the best part about playing around the world is all of the wonderfully different people that we get to meet.
