"Era un gran fan de Gamma Ray y me sabía todas las canciones"

Para Made in Metal ha sido un placer en tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a Frank Beck, vocalista de las leyendas del Power Metal Gamma Ray desde 2017. Aunque ya había cantado antes con ellos, fue entonces cuando se hizo oficial que estaría junto a Kai Hansen. Raúl Cardona conversa con él para saber cuáles fueron sus pasos hasta Gamma Ray y más allá.
MiM: ¡Hola, Frank! ¿Cómo estás?
GR: Hola Raul, un placer hablar contigo, es un placer y me siento honrado.
MiM: Sé que en tu adolescencia te cautivaron bandas como Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden y Deep Purple. Mencionas que el álbum Made in Japan fue uno de tus favoritos. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos?
GR: Bueno, nací en 1969. En mi infancia había principalmente música Rock'n'Roll, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, CCR, Led Zeppelin y, por supuesto, The Beatles, que escuché por primera vez en 1976. Compré mi primer disco y ese fue Deep Purple - Made in Japan, una verdadera obra maestra, en vivo y en bruto, y todavía significa mucho para mí. Este álbum me llevó a la música más pesada. Empecé escuchando Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Whitesnake, luego Priest, Maiden, Saxon, Dio, Metallica (hasta el Black Album). Mis álbumes favoritos de Maiden son: "Powerslave", "Piece of Mind" y "Somewhere in time", Black Sabbath todo con Ronnie James Dio en la voz, "Headless Cross" y "Tyr" con Tony Martin y "Born again" con Ian Gillan.
MiM: Seguimos en el pasado. ¿Cuáles fueron las lecciones que aprendiste en las giras que hiciste cuando estabas en la banda Blues Brother Tribute?
GR: Bueno, para ser honesto, también me encanta el blues, el funk y la música soul y la película "The Blues Brothers" está llena de gente muy talentosa de ese género, muy divertida y para mí personalmente en mi Top Ten privado de "Mejores películas de todos los tiempos". “Así que fue pura diversión interpretar a Jake Blues, también tenía la figura adecuada para eso en ese momento. Estuve cantando en esta banda durante más de veinte años. Tocamos en muchos espectáculos en toda Europa, también en el "Festival de Jazz de Montreux", que es el festival de blues más famoso de todos los tiempos. He aprendido que es extremadamente importante pensar fuera de la Caja musicalmente, eso te lleva adelante.
MiM: En 2007 fundaste una banda de covers de Metal donde armaste un setlist de canciones clásicas. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?
GR: Sí, la banda se llamaba Srained que significa “Llueve” en nuestro dialecto local regional y se debe a que estaba lloviendo el día que se formó la banda, así de fácil. En ese momento, conocí a algunas personas que me preguntaron si quería cantar algunas de mis viejas canciones clásicas de metal que amo, y me emocioné de inmediato. Y así armamos un setlist con todos los clásicos de los 80's y yo traté de cantarlos, con más o menos éxito, jaja.
MiM: Participaste en los discos “Blood of the Saints” (Metal Blade Records, 2011), “Preacher of theNight” (Napalm Records, 2013) y 'Blessed & Possessed' (Napalm Records, 2015) de Powerwolf. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cómo fue trabajar en el estudio con la banda? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación?
GR: Te digo un secreto, los chicos de Powerwolf no son de Rumania, y no son hombres lobo, (LOL) vienen de la misma región donde vivo y conocí a estos chicos mucho antes de que formaran esta cosa lobuna y extremadamente exitosa. Así que no es sorprendente que me hayan pedido en 2011 que haga coro clásico y también coro de metal en “Blood of the saints”. Creo que lo hice bastante bien, de lo contrario no me habrían pedido para los otros álbumes. Pero trabajar en un coro es totalmente diferente a cantar en primera fila como cantante principal. Tienes que ceñirte a la melodía y la armonía y trabajar como un todo. Eso fue realmente interesante y, por supuesto, me desarrolló un poco más.
MiM: Iron Savior es otra de las bandas con las que has colaborado.
GR: Tuve la suerte de ver la primera gira de Iron Savior. Kai también tocó esa gira con la guitarra para promocionar a Piet y el álbum debut. Kai se hizo cargo de la voz de “Watcher in the sky”. Yo estaba entre los fanáticos del metal, gritando y moviendo la cabeza y estaba enamorado de esa banda. Después de unirme a Gamma Ray en 2014 y muchas visitas a Hamburgo, conocí a Piet y le dije que era fan desde su primer álbum. Así que me invitó a hacer algunas partes principales y de coro en su álbum “Titancraft”.
MiM: Me gustaría que me dijeras ¿cómo llegas a Gamma Ray? ¿Cómo fue tu primer encuentro con Kai Hansen? ¿Cómo ha sido trabajar con la banda en todos estos años?
GR: Eso fue en abril de 2014, que lo conocí por primera vez, el día que mi vida cambió por completo. Ese día, Gamma Ray tocó en su gira "Empire of the Undead" y el lugar fue en Aschaffenburg (Alemania). Conocí a Dirk un par de años antes, donde solíamos hacer un proyecto musical juntos que nunca sucedió, por lo que nos conocíamos. Le dije que era un gran fan de Gamma Ray y que me sabía todas las canciones. Tal vez recordaba estos detalles. Así que me llamó ese día y me preguntó si podía ir al lugar y cantar algunas canciones de Gamma Ray en el escenario, porque Kai estaba enfermo con una fuerte bronquitis. Yo estaba realmente muy nervioso, conocer a tus ídolos puede cambiar de diferentes maneras, pero Kai fue muy amable y cortés conmigo, inmediatamente nos llevamos bien y subí al escenario, hice lo mejor que pude y creo que Kai quedó impresionado, de lo contrario no hubiera cantado el resto de la gira.
MiM: Hace poco volví a ver el concierto “30 Years Live Anniversary” (Ear Music, 2021). Excelente presentación de la banda y espectacular su actuación. Sonabas genial. ¿Tienes algún recuerdo de ese concierto que quieras compartir con los lectores?
GR: Gracias por los elogios. Recuerdo el extraño ambiente. ¡Tocar un espectáculo en un lugar casi vacío es tan irreal! Gracias a Dios, teníamos algunos fanáticos en las salas VIP donde podíamos buscar y recibir alguna respuesta y al menos podíamos mantenerla un poco. Algunas personas en internet dicen que parecemos aburridos... bueno, no es fácil imaginar a miles de personas sin ver sus caras, sus reacciones y emociones. Estábamos muy concentrados en tocar nuestro material y seguro que nos divertíamos en el escenario. Pero faltaba el público. También hay gente hablando de mi posición en la banda, especialmente para el show de aniversario. Tengo que decir aquí que ambos (Kai y yo) compartimos las voces juntos y que realmente estoy cantando más canciones y partes cuando salimos de gira juntos, pero cuando surgió la idea de hacer un show de aniversario de 30 años, le dije a Kai que tenía que cantar más partes de lo habitual porque es SU aniversario, me perdí los últimos 24 años sobre el escenario, aunque he visto todos los Tours que hicieron, estando como público. De hecho, solo quería darles a los fanáticos lo que querían y mantenerme un poco más en segundo plano, mostrando de esa manera mi respeto por esta gran banda donde ahora puedo cantar.
También recuerdo los ensayos en Hamburgo con Ralf y Corvin, todo era tan familiar y relajado. Ralf es realmente uno de los mejores cantantes en el negocio del metal en este planeta y también una de las personas más agradables que he conocido.
MiM: ¿Cómo logras mantener tu voz en perfectas condiciones?
GR: Practica, practica, practica :-)
MiM: Han pasado algunos años desde el último disco de Gamma Ray. ¿Alguna novedad que nos puedas contar? ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?
GR: Actualmente estamos trabajando en algunas ideas para un nuevo álbum de Gamma Ray pero no puedo estimar en este momento cuando estaremos listos. ¡Puedes estar seguro de que lanzaremos un nuevo álbum de Gamma Ray!
MiM: ¿Qué tan difícil ha sido para Gamma Ray estos dos últimos años de pandemia y confinamiento?
GR: Creo que ya puedes adivinar mi respuesta. Tienes que saber que como músico no te pagan mensualmente como un empleado normal sino que te pagan por show. Si no tocas, no ganas dinero. En este caso, los dos últimos años fueron brutalmente duros para mí. Tienes que buscar alternativas, de lo contrario no podrás mantener tu nivel de vida. Estoy realmente feliz de poder entrar de nuevo en los escenarios de este mundo y hacer lo que más me gusta, cantar buena música, disfrutar y hacer sonreír a la gente. "I was a huge fan of Gamma Ray and I know every song"
Made in Metal is pleased to have the opportunity to interview Frank Beck, vocalist of the Power Metal legends Gamma Ray since 2017. Although he had sung with them before, that's when it became official that he would be alongside Kai Hansen. Raúl Cardona talks with him to find out what his steps were up to Gamma Ray and beyond.
MiM: Hi Frank! How are you?
GR: Hi Raul, nice to talk to you, it`s my pleasure and I am feeling honored.
MiM: I know that in your teenage years you were captivated by bands like Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden and Deep Purple. You mention that the album Made in Japan was one of your favorites. What memories do you have of those times?
GR: Well, I was born in 1969. There was mostly Rock`n`Roll music in my childhood, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, CCR, Led Zeppelin and of course The Beatles which I first listened to. 1976 I bought my first record ever and that was Deep Purple - Made in Japan, a truly masterpiece, live and raw, and it still means so much to me. This album brought me into the more heavier music. I started listening to Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Whitesnake, later then Priest, Maiden, Saxon, DIO, Metallica (until the Black Album). My favorite Maiden Albums are: “Powerslave”, “Piece of Min” and “Somewhere in time”, Black Sabbath everything with Ronnie James Dio on vocals, “Headless Cross” and “Tyr” with Tony Martin and “Born again” with Ian Gillan.
MiM: We continue in the past. What were the lessons you learned on the tours you did when you were in the Blues Brother Tribute band?
GR: Well, to be honest, I also love Blues, Funk and Soul Music, and “The Blues Brothers“ movie is full of highly talented people of that genre, bloody funny and for me personally in my private Top Ten of “Best Movies ever” So it was pure fun to play Jake Blues, I also had the right figure for it at the time. I was singing in this band for more than twenty years. We played lots of shows across Europe, also at the “Montreux Jazz Festival” which is the most renowned Blues Festival ever. I have learned that it is extremely important to think outside the box musically, which gets you ahead.
MiM: In 2007 you founded a Metal cover band where you put together a setlist of classic songs. Tell me about it?
GR: Yes, the band was called Srained which means “It rains” in our regional local dialect and is due to the fact that it was raining on the day the band was formed, it`s that easy. At that time I knew a few people who asked me if I want to sing some of the old classic metal songs I love, and I was immediately excited. And so we built a setlist with all the classics from the 80s and I tried to sing them, with more or less success, haha.
MiM: You participated in the albums “Blood of the Saints” (Metal Blade Records, 2011), “Preacher of the Night” (Napalm Records, 2013) and “Blessed & Possessed” (Napalm Records, 2015) by Powerwolf. How did the idea come about? How was working in the studio with the band? How was the recording process?
GR: I tell you a secret, the guys from Powerwolf are not from Romania, and are not werewolves, (LOL) they come from the same region where I live and I knew these guys long before they formed this wolvish and meanwhile extremely successful thing. So it`s not surprising that I`ve been asked in 2011 to do classical choir and also metal choir stuff on “Blood of the saints” I think I did quite well, otherwise they wouldn`t have asked me for the other albums. But working in a choir is totally different than singing in the front row as a lead singer. You have to stick to melody and harmony and work as a whole. That was really interesting and of course, it developed me a bit further.
MiM: Iron Savior is another of the bands you've collaborated with?
GR: I was blessed to see the first Iron Savior Tour live. Kai also played that tour on guitar to promote Piet and the debut album and Kai overtook the vocals for “Watcher in the sky” I was among the metal fans, shouting and headbanging and I was in love with that band. After I joined Gamma Ray in 2014 and had many visits to Hamburg I first met Piet and told him that I was a fan since their first album. So he invited me to do some lead and choir parts on their album "Titancraft".
MiM: I would like you to tell me how you get to Gamma Ray? How was your first meeting with Kai Hansen? How has it been working with the band in all these years?
GR: That was in April 2014 I met him first, the day my life completely changed. On that day Gamma Ray played their “Empire of the Undead”-Tour and the venue was in Aschaffenburg (Germany) I met Dirk a couple of years before when we used to do a musical project together which never happened and so we knew each other. I told him I was a huge fan of Gamma Ray and that I know every song. Maybe he did remember these details. So he called me on that day and asked me if I could come to the venue and sing some Gamma Ray songs on stage because Kai was sick with a heavy Bronchitis. I was really nervous, meeting your idols can turn in different ways, but Kai was really nice and kind to me, we immediately got on well with each other and so I hit the stage, did my best and I think Kai was impressed, otherwise, I wouldn`t have sung the rest of the tour.
MiM: I recently saw the “30 Years Live Anniversary” concert again ( Ear Music, 2021). Excellent presentation of the band and spectacular your performance. You sounded great. Do you have any memories of that concert that you want to share with the readers?
GR: Thanks for the praise. I remember the strange atmosphere. Playing a show in an almost empty venue is so unreal. Thank God we had a few Fans in the VIP lounges where we could look up and receive some response and could at least hold on to it a little bit. Some people on the internet said we look bored...well it isn`t easy to imagine thousand people without seeing their faces, their reactions, and emotions. We were really concentrated on playing our stuff, and we sure had fun on stage. But the audience was missing. There are also people talking about my position in the band, especially for the anniversary show. I have to say here that we both (Kai & me) share the vocals together and that I am really singing more songs and parts when we tour together, but when the idea came up to do a 30 years anniversary show, I told Kai that he has to sing more parts than usual because it`s HIS anniversary, I missed the last 24 years on stage, although I have seen all the Tours they played off stage. I actually just wanted to give the fans what they want and keep me a little more in the background, showing in that way my respect to this great band I am able now to sing.
I also remember the rehearsals in Hamburg with Ralf and Corvin, everything was so familiar and relaxed. Ralf is really one of the greatest singers in the metal business on this planet and also one of the nicest people I ever met.
MiM: How do you manage to keep your voice in perfect condition?
GR: Practice, practice, practice :-)
MiM: It's been a few years since the last Gamma Ray record. Any news you can tell us? When will fans be able to hear new material from the band?
GR: Currently we are working on some ideas for a new Gamma Ray album but when we are ready I can`t estimate at the moment. You can be sure that we will release a new Gamma Ray album together!
MiM: How difficult has it been for Gamma Ray these last two years of pandemic and confinement?
GR: I think you can already guess my answer. You have to know that as a musician you don`t get paid monthly like a normal employee but are paid per show. If you don`t play, you don`t make any money. In this case, the last two years were brutally hard for me. You have to look for alternatives, otherwise, you won`t be able to keep your standard of living. I am really happy when I can enter the stages of this world again and do what I love most, making music, enjoying, and making people smile.
