"Queremos darle al público una actuación muy enérgica"
La banda sueca de Hard Rock, Degreed lanzó recientemente su álbum 'Are You Ready' (Frontiers Music srl, 2022). Made in Metal conversa con el batería Mats Eriksson para desentrañar todo lo relacionado con este gran álbum.
MIM: ¡Hola chicos! Mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con la banda.
DG: ¡Gracias por tomarse el tiempo para hablar con nosotros! ¡El placer es nuestro!
MIM: Son una banda con diecisiete años en la escena del rock. ¿Cómo fueron esos comienzos? ¿Quién tuvo la idea de crear la banda y cómo se hizo? ¿Cómo pudieron insertarse en el complicado mundo de la industria de la música disco?
DG: Mi hermano Robin y yo comenzamos a tocar música juntos hace casi veinticinco años y desde entonces siempre hemos tenido una banda. Esta banda se formó cuando Robin comenzó la escuela secundaria y se mudó a Estocolmo, donde conoció a Daniel, quien era un guitarrista fenomenal y le pidieron que se uniera al grupo que teníamos entonces. Un poco después, la mía y el primo de Robin, Mikael Blanc, se unieron y Degreed se formó por completo.
El negocio de la música es un negocio difícil, y creo que depende del nivel que desees ponerle. Siempre ha sido divertido tocar, ese siempre ha sido el objetivo número uno y creo que es la razón por la que nos hemos unido y todavía estamos cerca. Normalmente, ese es el espíritu de muchas bandas de rock también y creo que esa podría ser la razón por la que ingresan a la industria y esa mentalidad los hace quedarse.
Mim: Cuéntame sobre el álbum "Life, Love, Loss" (Melodic Rock Records, 2011) que se lanzó hace diez años el año pasado. ¿Qué me puedes decir de él? ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esos tiempos? ¿Qué canciones de este álbum no puedes dejar de tocar en vivo?
DG: Wow, es hace mucho tiempo. Este no fue grabado de una vez. Creo que llevó un año tener todas las canciones escritas, producidas y grabadas, por lo que definitivamente fue un proceso largo. Y cuando grabamos, normalmente grabamos dos canciones aquí y dos canciones allí, por lo que se tardó un tiempo en grabar el álbum. No tengo nada más que buenos recuerdos de la grabación y alrededor de ese tiempo. Ensayamos un montón y nos divertimos mucho juntos, ¡así que esos días fueron geniales!
Creo que realmente nunca hemos dejado de tocar canciones de ese disco. Siempre ha estado en el set y son grandes canciones en vivo, por lo que funciona muy bien.
MIM: Al entrar en el presente, el álbum "Are You Ready" (Frontiers Music, 2022) es un encantador álbum, que tiene excelentes críticas de la prensa especializada y el público en general. ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Cómo fue el proceso creativo y de grabación? ¿Quién estaba a cargo de la producción musical?
DG: ¡Muchas gracias! El álbum tiene algunos temas diferentes a lo largo del disco, pero creo que lo principal de lo que se trata es el amor por la música y el alto valor que nosotros y muchas otras personas le ponen a la música. Tenemos canciones como "Radio" que es un homenaje a los viejos tiempos cuando todos escuchaban la radio para conocer música nueva y "Are You Ready", que se trata de pasar un buen rato, y un buen momento para nosotros siempre involucra música, por lo que se trata de ¡El amor por la música!
"Are You Ready" fue grabado, producido, mezclado y masterizado aquí en mi estudio en Kopparberg Suecia por mí. Fue una de las grabaciones más estructuradas que hemos hecho y también una de los álbumes más trabajados que hemos hecho hasta la fecha.
El proceso creativo al escribirlo fue un poco diferente porque escribimos algunas canciones durante el ensayo y algunas canciones en el estudio cuando estábamos todos juntos, pero luego también usamos la forma tradicional donde Mikael hace una pista y entonces él o Robin hacen letras y melodías para ellas. Incluso cuando tuvimos canciones "hechas", trabajamos con ellas varias veces más y cambiamos bits y piezas para hacerlo bien. ¡Parece que fue un proceso complicado, pero para mí este fue el álbum más suave y satisfactorio para escribir hasta ahora! Sin embargo, esta vez creo que, de una forma u otra, todos teníamos algo sobre las cosas en cada canción. Ya sea que se tratara de una frase de la letra o simplemente sacando una parte de batería. Todos estaban muy involucrados y me encantó ese tipo de forma de trabajar.
MIM: ¿Qué sucede en este álbum a nivel lírico? ¿Con qué temas tratan las letras?
DG: ¡Las letras son sobre cosas diferentes, pero principalmente se trata de música, amor y cosas divertidas! Esas tres cosas son normalmente los temas sobre lo que escribimos música y creo que eso también es lo que el 99% de otras bandas y artistas también escriben.
MIM: A nivel musical. ¿Cuáles son sus referencias?
DG: Esa es difícil. Depende del tipo de canción que queramos escribir en ese momento en particular. No puedo hablar completamente por los demás, pero normalmente es diferente de una canción a otra. "Radio", por ejemplo, tuvimos "We Will Rock You" con Queen en mente para el coro, que es tranquilo obvio pero muy efectivo y en "Turn Back" tuve un poco de enfoque de TOTO en la producción, por lo que difiere de canción a canción y también sobre quién es la fuerza impulsora al escribir y producir.
MIM: Este álbum se ha grabado durante la pandemia y el confinamiento, ¿qué tan diferente se ha comparado la composición y el proceso de grabación con trabajos anteriores?
DG: ¡Esto realmente funcionó mejor que antes! Jeje. Claro que teníamos algunos problemas, por ejemplo, cuando se suponía que debíamos grabar guitarra en Estocolmo, el propietario del estudio se contagió de Covid (afortunadamente no era tan malo), pero eso hizo imposible grabar en su lugar. Afortunadamente, lo resolvimos con Daniel viniendo a mi estudio para grabar las guitarras para que funcionara para mejor. De lo contrario, todo funcionó sin problemas. Debido a la pandemia, había menos trabajo para algunos de nosotros, por lo que también afectó la grabación en un buen sentido, y funcionó mucho mejor de lo esperado.
MIM: ¿Cómo has experimentado el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?
DG: No lo he hecho personalmente. He tenido la suerte de no tener Covid y vivo en un pueblo pequeño, por lo que siempre tengo la posibilidad de salir a donde no hay personas presentes. Sin embargo, Daniel y Mikael viven en Estocolmo, y han estado trabajando en casa porque las oficinas han estado cerradas debido a la pandemia.
MIM: ¿Cómo es un concierto de Degreed?, ¿qué ofreces a los fans y al público en general?
DG: ¡Lleno de energía! ¡Queremos darle a la audiencia una actuación muy enérgica donde damos todo en el escenario y normalmente eso es contagioso por que la audiencia también se vuelve un poco salvaje! También somos una banda muy precisa y hemos trabajado la parte de tocar en vivo, por lo que sonamos geniales, lo que para mí es de gran importancia cuando vamos a ver una banda en vivo. ¡Así que mucha energía y musicalidad es lo que ofrecemos!
MIM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas en este año?
DG: Tenemos algunos conciertos al final del verano y luego esperamos poder tocar algunos más durante el otoño, así como la primavera de 2023 y luego hacer un seguimiento con otro álbum y volver a la carretera ¡una vez más!

The Hard Rock band Degreed recently released their album “Are You Ready” (Frontiers Music, 2022). Made in Metal talks with Mats to unravel everything related to this great album.
MiM: Hello guys! My name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with the band.
Dg: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us! The pleasure is ours!
MiM: They are a band with seventeen years in the rock scene. How were those beginnings? Who had the idea to create the band and how was it done? How were they able to insert themselves into the complicated world of the disco music industry?
Dg: I and my brother Robin started playing music together almost twenty-five years ago and since then we’ve always had a band. This band was formed when Robin started high school and moved to Stockholm where he met Daniel who was a phenomenal guitarist and he got asked to join the band we had then. A little while later me and Robins's cousin Mikael Blanc joined and Degreed was fully formed.
The music business is a hard business for sure and I think it depends on what level you want to put it. We are always been about having fun playing music and that has always been the number one goal and I think is the reason we’ve stuck together and are still around. Normally that’s the spirit of a lot of rock bands as well and I think that might be the reason they get into the industry and that mentality makes them stick around.
MiM: Tell me about the album “Life, Love, Loss” (Melodic Rock Records, 2011) which was released ten years ago last year. What can you tell me about him? What memories do you have of those times? What songs from this album can't you stop playing live?
Dg: Wow, it’s such a long time ago. This one wasn’t recorded in one go. I think it took a year to have all the songs written, produced, and recorded so it definitely was a process too. And when we recorded we normally recorded two songs here and two songs there so it took a while to record the album. I have nothing but fond memories from the time of the recording and around that time. We rehearsed a ton and had a lot of fun together so those days were great!
I think we haven’t really ever stopped playing A Little Bit from that one. It has always been in the set and is just a great live song so it works great.
MiM: Entering the present, the album “Are You Ready” (Frontiers Music, 2022) is an excellent album, which has excellent reviews by the specialized press and the general public. In which recording studio did it take place? How was the creative and recording process? Who was in charge of the musical production?
Dg: Thank you very much! The album has a few different topics throughout the record but I think the main thing it is about is the love of music and the high value we and a lot of other people put on music. We have songs like “Radio” which is an homage to the old days when everyone listened to the radio to hear new music and “Are You Ready” which is about having a good time and a good time to us always involves music so it’s about the love for music really!
“Are You Ready” was recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered here in my studio in Kopparberg Sweden by me. It was one of the more structured recordings that we have done and also one of the most worked-through albums we have done to date.
The creative process when writing the album was a bit different on this album than previous albums causes we wrote a few songs during rehearsal and a few songs in the studio when we were all together but then also the traditional degreed way where Mikael makes a track and then either he or Robin makes lyrics and melodies for it.
And even when we had songs “done” we worked through them a few more times and changed bits and pieces to get them just right. It sounds like it was a complicated process but to me, this was the smoothest and most satisfying album to write so far! This time around though I think in one way or another all of us had a say about things on every song. Whether it came down to one phrase of the lyrics or just taking a kick drum out of a drumbeat. Everyone was very involved and I loved that type of way to work.
MiM: What happens on this album on a lyrical level? What topics do the lyrics deal with?
Dg: The lyrics are about a few different things but mainly it’s about music, love, and having fun! Those three things are normally what we write music about and I think that’s also what 99% of other bands and artists write about as well.
MiM: On a musical level, when writing music. What are your references?
Dg: That’s a hard one. It depends on what kind of song we want to write at that particular moment. I can’t speak fully for the others but normally it’s different from song to song.
“Radio” for example we had “We Will Rock You” with Queen in mind for the chorus which is quite obvious yet very effective and on “Turn Back” I had a bit of a Toto approach to it in the production so it differs from song to song and also on who is the driving force when writing and producing the song.
MiM: This album has been recorded during the pandemic and lockdowns, how different has the composition and recording process been compared to previous works?
Dg: This actually worked better than before! Hehe. Sure we had a few hiccups for example when we were supposed to record guitar in Stockholm the studio owner got Covid (fortunately it wasn’t that bad) but that made it impossible to record at his place. Fortunately, we solved it with Daniel coming to my studio to record the guitars so it worked out for the better really. Otherwise, everything ran smoothly. Because of the pandemic, there was less normal work for some of us so that affected the recording in a good way as well so it worked out a lot better than expected.
MiM: How have you experienced confinement and the pandemic so far?
Dg: I have not, personally. I’ve been fortunate enough to not get Covid and I live in a small town so I always have the possibility to go out to where there aren’t any people present. Daniel and Mikael however live in Stockholm so during periods they’ve been at home working because the offices have been closed due to the pandemic.
MiM: What is a Degreed concert like? As a band when you are alive, what do you offer to the fans and the general public?
Dg: Full of energy! We want to give the audience a very energetic performance so all of us give everything on stage and normally that is contagious so that the audience gets a bit wild as well! We’re also a very tight band and we’ve done our fair share of playing live so we sound great which to me is of huge importance when going to see a band live. So a lot of energy and musicianship is what we offer!
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled for this year?
Dg: We have a few gigs coming up at the end of the summer and then we hope to be able to play a few more during the fall as well as the spring of 2023 and then follow up with another album and get back on the road once again!
