"Somos energía en tu cara... Sin atuendos extraños, sin glamour"
Urban Primate, es una banda danesa de Metal Alternativo que ha reeditado su álbum 'Desolation' a través de Wormholedeath Records. Made in Metal habla con la banda para saber todo sobre este relanzamiento.
MiM: ¿Cómo fueron los inicios de la banda?
UP: De hecho, comenzamos Urban Primate en 2010. En ese entonces estábamos más orientados al rock duro, pero progresamos más y más hacia un tipo de sonido más metalero. El impulso detrás de la música siempre ha sido pura energía y emoción, música entregada desde el corazón, ya sabes. Necesitas sentir la música, la energía y las emociones que la música quiere que sientas. Este es el impulso que nos alimenta de energía para crear y evolucionar. Esta receta ha sido un punto de enfoque constante y una columna vertebral en su proceso creativo de hacer música.
MiM: “Desolation” (Wormholedeath Records, 2022) es un excelente álbum. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum? ¿De qué se trata?
UP: Básicamente se trata del lado más oscuro de la mente humana. Cómo lidiamos con los problemas y obstáculos cotidianos como la depresión, el desprecio por uno mismo, la soledad, los marginados, el miedo al trato entre las personas… Pero siempre con un mensaje de esperanza y de no rendirse. "Desolation" es un álbum sobre la humanidad en general y la forma en que las personas se sienten e interactúan en el mundo tal como es hoy. De eso se trata realmente Urban Primate. Las personas, los sentimientos y los obstáculos en la vida como estamos ahora, en este mismo momento en el tiempo.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
UP: Es un gran esfuerzo de colaboración en nuestra banda. Todos podemos traer una idea o un riff a la mesa y a partir de ahí lo trabajamos en la sala de ensayo. Tenemos diferentes enfoques y diferentes puntos fuertes, que entran en juego en el proceso creativo. La magia sucede cuando el equipo se une con este sentimiento especial sobre algunas buenas melodías. Cuando todo el mundo tiene este sentimiento de... ya sabes, esto me toca profundamente y siento algo. Es entonces cuando todos sentimos que la canción tiene un alma verdadera y un lugar en nuestro universo musical.
MiM: ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?
UP: Estamos influenciados por tantas bandas geniales. Principalmente de los 90 y principios de los 2000. Bandas como Alice In Chains, Deftones, RATM, Korn, Soulfly, pero sobre todo, además de las influencias obvias de otras bandas, tratamos de centrarnos en nuestro propio sonido y universo. Tenemos esta idea de la dirección en la que nos gustaría que se moviera nuestra música y seguimos haciendo canciones y probando ideas hasta que algo se siente bien. Esto es lo que verdaderamente nos inspira a crear.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. A. ¿En la posición de quién estabas? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
UP: Realmente queríamos tener una buena producción para estas canciones. Preguntamos y revisamos los diferentes estudios de grabación en Dinamarca, que tienen experiencia trabajando con metal, y elegimos trabajar con Nicklas Sonne de Defecto, que tiene un estudio en Dinamarca llamado Sonne studios. Es tanto un músico como un ingeniero excepcional, y fue un gran compañero de entrenamiento en el álbum. Realmente nos sentimos cómodos y en buenas manos durante todo el proceso de grabación, y estamos muy contentos con el resultado.
MiM: ¿Cómo describirías un show en vivo de Urban Primate?
UP: Energía en tu cara... Sin atuendos extraños, sin glamour, sin grandes espectáculos, solo energía musical y pura emoción. Todo desde el corazón. No esperes un teatro en el escenario, estamos ahí para proyectarte nuestro universo musical desde el escenario como las personas que somos. Eso es lo que hacemos, y luego saltamos un poco.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando lanzas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es dar vueltas. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
UP: Bueno, ya hemos trabajado mucho exponiendo el álbum. Todo lo que pudimos como personas normales que también tocan música. Pero la nueva firma con WormHoleDeath es definitivamente el movimiento más importante para sacar "Desolation" al mundo. Confiamos absolutamente en esta asociación y, además, seguimos haciendo lo que podemos desde nuestras propias redes sociales. Y a partir de ahí, solo esperamos tocar en muchos shows y hablar con más personas como tú y, con suerte, correr la voz de que nuestra música existe.
MiM: ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como Wormholedeath Records a una banda como Urban Primate para consolidarse en la escena?
UP: Esperamos y confiamos en que esta asociación hará que la banda avance aún más y haga que la música salga a la luz. Tenemos mucho que contar y esperamos que mucha gente escuche y tenga la sensación de la música que sentimos nosotros mismos. Estamos muy satisfechos con el nivel de compromiso, esfuerzo y comunicación con WHD. Estamos orgullosos de ser parte de la familia WHD y hemos tenido un buen comienzo.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.
UP: Solo esperamos que nuestra música te haga sentir… Algo cualquier cosa. – Eso es lo que debería hacer la música y esa es precisamente la razón por la que tocamos en primer lugar: Hacer sentir a la gente. Esperamos su apoyo y esperamos verlos en un próximo concierto cerca de ustedes.
"We are in-your-face energy. No weird outfits, no glamour"
Urban Primate, is an Danish Alternative Metal band which has re-released their album 'Desolation' via Wormholedeath Records. Made in Metal talks with the band to find out everything about this relaunch.
MiM: What were the beginnings of the band? How did the idea of creating the band come about?
UP: Actually we started Urban Primate back in 2010. Back then we were more Hard rock oriented but progressed more and more towards a more metal type of sound. The drive behind the music has always been pure energy and emotion, music delivered from the heart, you know. You need to feel the music, the energy, and the emotions the music wants you to feel. This is the drive that feeds us energy to create and evolve. This recipe has been a constant focus point and backbone in your creative process of making the music.
MiM: “Desolation” (Wormholedeath Records, 2022) is an excellent album. What can you tell me about this album? What is it about?
UP: Basically it deals with the darker side of the human mind. How we deal with everyday problems and obstacles such as depression, self-loathing, loneliness, outsiders, fear of the way people treat each other… But always with a message of hope and not giving up. Desolation is an album about humanity in general and the way people feel and interact in the world as it is today. It’s really what Urban Primate is all about. People, feelings, and the obstacles in life how we are right now, in this very moment in time.
MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall to one or two people?
UP: It’s such a collaborative effort in our band. We can all bring an idea or a riff to the table and from there we work at it in the rehearsal room. We have different approaches and different strengths, that all come to play in the creative process. The magic happens when the crew comes together with this special feeling about some good tunes. When everybody has this feeling of… you know, this touches me deeply and I feel something. This is when we all feel the song has a true soul and a place in our musical universe.
MiM: What are your main influences when composing new material?
UP: We are influenced by so many cool bands. Mostly from the 90s and early 2000s.. Bands like Alice In Chains, Deftones, RATM, Korn, Soulfly, but mostly besides the obvious influences from other bands, we try to focus on our own sound and universe. We have this idea of the direction in which we would like our music to move and we just keep making songs and trying out ideas until something feels right. This is what truly inspires us to create.
MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. A. Whose position were you in? In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?
UP: We really wanted to have a nice production for these songs. We asked around and checked the different recording studios in Denmark, that have experience in working with Metal music, and we chose to work with Nicklas Sonne of Defecto who has a studio in Denmark called Sonne studios. He is both an exceptional musician and engineer and was a great sparring partner on the album. We really felt comfortable and in capable hands throughout the entire recording process, and we are really happy with the result.
MiM: How would you describe an Urban Primate live show?
UP: In-your-face energy. No weird outfits, no glamour, no big spectacle, just smacking music energy and pure emotion. Everything from the heart. Don’t expect a theater on stage, we are there to Project our musical universe to you from the stage as the persons we are. That’s what we do – and then we jump around a little.
MiM: Normally when you release a new album, the normal thing afterward is to spin. What plans do you have to promote this album?
UP: Well we have done a lot of work exposing the album already. As much as we could as normal people who also play music. But the new signing with WormHoleDeath is definitely the most important move to get Desolation out in the world. We absolutely trust in this partnership and besides, we continue to do what we can from our own social media as well. And from there we just hope to play a lot of shows and talk to more people like you and hopefully spread the word that our music exists.
MiM: What can a record label like Wormholedeath Records offer to a band like Urban Primate to establish it in the scene?
UP: We hope and trust that this partnership will get the band going even more and get the music out there. We have so much to tell and we hope a lot of people will listen and get the feeling from the music that we feel ourselves. We are very pleased with the level of engagement, effort, and communication with WHD. We are proud of being part of the WHD family and we are off to a good start.

UP: We just hope that our music makes you feel… Something, anything. – That’s what music should do and that is the very reason why we play in the first place: To make people feel. We hope for your support and we look forward to seeing you at an upcoming gig close to you.
