La banda sueca de Doom Rock Avatarium lanzará su nuevo álbum titulado 'Death, Where Is Your Sting', el próximo 21 de octubre bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico AFM Records. Made in Metal habla con el guitarrista Marcus Jidell para saber todo sobre este disco.

MiM: Hola. '“Death, Where Is Your Sting' (AFM Records, 2022) presume de un sonido alucinante y una producción impecable. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

R: ¡Hola Raúl y gracias por tu interés en Avatarium! El álbum fue grabado y mezclado en Nox Studio en Estocolmo. No es un estudio muy conocido, pero tiene muchas salas de sonido increíbles, además de la antigua consola SSL 9000 de Benny Andersson (ABBA), ¡que es una máquina increíble! Estoy muy interesado en técnicas de grabación antiguas y también me encanta experimentar con mis propias ideas. A menudo hago cosas que son bastante poco convencionales, pero eso es parte de la diversión y muchas veces conduce a sonidos que probablemente nunca encontraría de otra manera. Es bueno saber que a la gente le gusta la producción, ya que he pasado mucho tiempo y algunas noches sin dormir para obtener el sonido que quería.

MiM: Musicalmente, ¿cuáles dirías que son las diferencias y similitudes entre este álbum y los trabajos anteriores de la banda?

R: Varios periodistas con los que he estado hablando me dicen que este es una continuación del álbum anterior y que realmente hemos encontrado nuestro propio sonido ahora. ¡Es un cumplido fantástico para mí! Nunca quedarnos quietos y siempre desafiarnos a nosotros mismos es muy importante, así que espero sonemos diferentes. Leif Edling es una de mis mayores inspiraciones, es como un hermano mayor y un mentor para mí. Una de todas las cosas que aprendí de él es la integridad, hacer lo que dice tu corazón y no seguir las tendencias o las expectativas de otras personas. Hacemos esto por amor a la música. Creo que cada álbum de Avatarium tiene su propia identidad y te sugiero que los escuches todos seguidos si tienes tiempo algún día. Verás el desarrollo de la banda y con suerte entenderás nuestro objetivo de explorar nuevos terrenos.

MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es "Death, Where Is Your Stinge" un álbum conceptual? ¿Cuáles son los temas sobre líricamente hablando?

R: Las letras tratan las clásicas cuestiones sobre la vida, las relaciones y la muerte. Cómo la vida puede estar llena de dolor y luchas, pero al mismo tiempo es hermosa y sagrada. El bien contra el mal es algo en lo que pienso mucho estos días y tanto Jennie-Ann como yo estamos muy interesados ​​en la psicología. Jennie-Ann es en realidad una psicoterapeuta certificada, por lo que tiene un conocimiento bastante bueno en estos asuntos.

MiM: Me encanta la portada del álbum. ¿Con quién estáis trabajando en la imagen de los discos?

R: ¡Erik Rovanpera hizo la portada y también nos encanta!

MiM: Al final de la canción "A Love Like Ours", se escucha un espectacular solo de violín. ¿Algún músico invitado?

A: En realidad, es mi viejo héroe musical Svante Henrysson quien toca el violonchelo en esa canción y, aunque suene como una mezcla de violín y guitarra eléctrica, es él quien hace este increíble solo.

MiM: “Death, Where Is Your Sting” (AFM Records, 2022) tiene un sonido sólido, con varios pasajes acústicos que, junto a la voz de Jennie-Ann Smith, hacen de este disco un trabajo excepcional. Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tuvieron muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

R: Siempre lleva tiempo encontrar la vibra de un álbum, pero si no apuntas, nunca aciertas en nada, así que tuvimos una idea. Teníamos un estudio con una sala grande, así que queríamos experimentar con eso. También quería usar menos Hammond y menos teclados modernos, por lo que la mayoría de los sonidos ambientales son guitarras, pianos acústicos (teníamos tres pianos diferentes en el estudio) y Rhodes. Siempre he sido fanático de los sonidos ambientales y de superponer guitarras. Puedes escuchar eso en todos nuestros álbumes. Creo que esa es la clave del sonido Avatarium. Esta vez lo hicimos incluso más que antes, creo. También me encanta tocar la guitarra acústica, así que probablemente será aún más en el futuro. Ahora mismo estoy practicando unos fraseos de estilo flamenco.

MiM: Tu sonido de guitarra es áspero y pesado. Siento una marcada influencia de guitarristas como Tony Iommi y David Gilmour. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

R: Tanto Iommi como Gilmour son héroes para mí y me encanta su sonido y su forma de tocar. Usamos bastantes amplificadores antiguos Marshall tocando a volúmenes extremadamente altos y supongo que eso fue lo que creó el sonido de guitarra crudo y directo. Como compositor, me inspiro en muchos compositores y músicos diferentes y siempre escuchamos muchos tipos diferentes de música. Puede ser música folclórica sueca, música sacra coral de Rusia, Beethoven, Mercyful Fate, Paco De Lucia o Miles Davis.

MiM: ¿Jennie-Ann Smith es una vocalista con formación académica o es empírica?

R: Jennie-Ann es mayormente un verso libre como cantante. De hecho, no creo que puedas aprender a cantar así en una escuela. Es una fuerza natural con la que solo algunas personas son bendecidas.

MiM: El sonido de la banda navega por el Doom, el Grunge y el Rock Progresivo. ¿Cual es tu opinión acerca de esto?

R: Soy fanático de todos estos géneros, pero lo más importante son nuestras tres palabras clave, "Oscuro, Pesado y Poético". Estos elementos siempre tienen que estar en las canciones. Además de eso, tratamos de esforzarnos y abrir nuevos caminos en cada álbum. Es solo en la noche oscura donde finalmente puedes ver las estrellas.

MiM: ¿Cómo tratas de incluir elementos personales al crear música?

R: Creo que es muy importante encontrar siempre tu propia “voz” cuando haces las cosas. Se aplica a todo, no solo a la música. Si quieres crear una personalidad tienes que formar tus propios pensamientos. Trato de leer mucho y escuchar música todos los días para inspirarme y aprender cosas nuevas. Estas cosas inician un proceso de pensamiento tanto musical como personal para mí. Si tienes gente a tu alrededor que te deja probar tu pensamientos, pero también cuestionarlos, tienes una buena oportunidad de crear algo interesante.

MiM: Una vez que el disco esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes para promocionarlo?

R: Haremos una gira junto con Swallow The Sun el próximo año y, con suerte, algunos shows más, ¡así que mantén los ojos abiertos!

The Swedish Doom Rock band Avatarium will release their new album entitled "Death, Where Is Your Sting", on October 21 under the prestigious record label AFM Records. Made in Metal talks to the guitar player Marcus Jidell to find out everything about this album.

 MiM: Hello. "Death, Where Is Your Sting" (AFM Records, 2022) boasts an amazing sound and impeccable production. How was the recording and production process? 

A: Hi Raul and thank you for your interest in Avatarium! The album was recorded and mixed at Nox Studio in Stockholm. Not a very well-known studio but it has many amazing-sounding rooms plus Benny Anderssons (ABBA) old SSL 9000 console which is an amazing machine! I’m very interested in old recording techniques and I also love to experiment with my own ideas. I often do things that are quite unconventional but that’s part of the fun and many times leads to sounds that I probably never would find otherwise. It’s good to know that people like the production since I’ve been spending a lot of time and some sleepless nights getting the sound I wanted.

MiM: Musically, what would you say are the differences and similarities between this album and the previous works of the band?

A: Several journalists I’ve been talking to tell me that this is a continuation of the previous album and that we really have found our own sound now. That is a fantastic compliment to me! To never stand still and always challenge ourselves is very important so hopefully, we sound different. Leif Edling is one of my biggest inspirations, he is like an older brother and mentor to me. One of the things I learned from him is integrity, to do what your heart says and not follow trends or other people's expectations. We do this because of our love of music. I think that every Avatarium album has its own identity and I suggest you listen to them all in a row if you have the time one day. You will see the development of the band and hopefully understand our aim to explore new grounds.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. is "Death, Where Is Your Stinge" a concept album? What are the themes about lyrically speaking?

A: The lyrics deal with the classic questions about life, relations, and death. How life can be filled with pain and struggles but also at the same time beautiful and sacred. Good versus Evil is something I think a lot about these days and both me and Jennie-Ann are very interested in psychology. Jennie-Ann is actually a certified psychotherapist so she has quite good knowledge of these matters.

MiM: I love the album cover artwork. Who are you working with on the image of the discs?

A: Erik Rovanpera made the cover and we love it as well!

MiM: At the end of the song "A Love Like Ours", a spectacular violin solo is heard. Any guest musician?

A: It is actually my old musical hero Svante Henrysson who plays the cello on that song and even though it might sound like a mix of a violin and electric guitar it’s him doing this incredible solo.

MiM: "Death, Where Is Your Sting" (AFM Records, 2022) has a solid sound, with several acoustic passages that, together with the voice of Jennie-Ann Smith, make this album an exceptional work. I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.

A: It always takes time to find the vibe of an album but if you don’t aim you never hit anything so we had an idea. We had a studio with a big room so we wanted to experiment with that. I also wanted to use fewer Hammond and less modern keyboards so most of the ambient sounds are guitars, acoustic pianos (we had three different pianos in the studio), and Rhodes. I have always been a fan of ambient sounds and layer guitars. You can hear that on all our albums. I think that is a key to the Avatarium sound. This time we did it even more than before I think. I also love to play acoustic guitar so I will probably be even more of that in the future. Right now I’m actually practicing some flamenco-style phrasings.

MiM: Your guitar sound is rough and heavy. I feel a marked influence from guitarists like Tony Iommi and David Gilmour. What can you tell me about it? 

A: Both Iommi and Gilmour are heroes to me and I love their sound and playing. We used quite many vintage Marshall amps playing on extremely loud volumes and I guess that was what created the raw and in-your-face guitar sound. As a songwriter, I’m inspired by so many different composers and musicians and we always listen to many different kinds of music. It can be Swedish folk music, Sacred Choral music from Russia, Beethoven, Mercyful Fate, Paco De Lucia, or Miles Davis.

MiM: Jennie-Ann Smith is a vocalist with an academic background or is she empirical?

A: Jennie-Ann is mostly self-thought as a singer. I actually don’t think you can learn to sing like that in a school. It’s a natural force that just some people are blessed with. 

MiM: The band's sound navigates Doom, Grunge, and Progressive Rock. What is your opinion about it?

A: I’m a fan of all these genres but the most important is our three keywords, “Dark, Heavy and Poetic”. These elements always have to be in the songs. Besides, we try to push ourselves and break new ground on every album. It’s only in the dark night that you finally can see the stars.

MiM: How do you try to include personal elements when creating music?

A: I think it is very important to always find your own “voice” when you do things. It applies to everything, not just music. If you want to create a personality you have to form your own thoughts. I try to read a lot and listen to music every day to get inspiration and learn new things. These things start a thought process both musical and personal for me. If you have people around you that let you try your thoughts but also question them, you have a good chance to create something interesting.

MIM: Once the album is available to all the band fans, what are your plans to promote it?

A: We will do a tour together with Swallow The Sun next year and hopefully some more shows so keep your eyes open!

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
