"Todas las letras están conectadas a un solo tema, que es "Isolation""
La banda italiana Atmospheric Doom Metal (EchO) lanzará su álbum 'Witnesses' el 25 de noviembre a través de Black Lion Records. Made in Metal habla con la banda para saber todo sobre este disco.
MiM: Hola, mi nombre es Raul Cardona y es un placer hablar con la banda.
EO: ¡Hola Raúl! ¡Nuestro placer! Gracias por el espacio que nos estás dando.
MiM: El nombre de la banda y la forma en que decidieron escribirlo es muy interesante. ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?
EO: El nombre original era Echoes of Perdition, pero pronto fue cambiado a (EchO) refiriéndose a la ninfa en la mitología griega del mismo nombre, algunos miembros anteriores agregaron los paréntesis para hacerlo más reconocible.
MiM: “Witnesses” (Black Lion Records, 2022) es un disco denso, pesado, con excelentes pasajes atmosféricos bien logrados. Nos adentra en una atmósfera que te envuelve y te lleva a través de las canciones del disco a través de una gran historia. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?
EO: Muchas gracias, el disco fue escrito durante el primer confinamiento del 2020 y en los meses siguientes, todas las letras (que son escritas por nuestro cantante Fabio) son sobre la frustración y la impotencia que sentimos durante esos meses, todo el incertidumbre y desesperación que nos trajo la situación, estar separados de nuestros amigos y familiares. La música fue compuesta por separado de la letra, pero creemos que probablemente fue la mejor combinación de música y letra que hemos tenido en cualquiera de nuestros trabajos, ya que por primera vez estábamos, aunque separados, todos en la misma situación y, a pesar de la distancia, que nos obligaba a trabajar de una manera diferente a la habitual, probablemente nos sentimos mucho más conectados entre nosotros.MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
EO: El proceso de grabación, a diferencia del proceso de escritura, fue bastante sencillo, grabamos la batería (tocada por nuestro baterista suplente que lleva con nosotros cuatro años ahora, Francesco Bassi) en un estudio de proyecto en nuestra área que fue desmantelado poco después de nuestra sesión, mientras que las voces El seguimiento de las guitarras y el bajo sucedió en el estudio de la casa de nuestro guitarrista Simone. Francesco Genduso de ONDA Studio se encargó de la grabación de la batería y la mezcla del álbum, Jei Doublerice de Pese Exile y Exiled Media se encargó de la producción y grabación de las voces, mientras que nuestro guitarrista Simone se encargó de todas las guitarras y el seguimiento del bajo y re-amplificación, finalmente Greg Chandler de Esoteric y Priory Recording Studios se encargó de la masterización, como en todos nuestros álbumes anteriores.
MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es “Witnesses” un álbum conceptual?
EO: No es exactamente un álbum conceptual, aunque todas las letras están conectadas a un solo tema, que es "Isolation" y la angustia que surge de él, que todos sentimos en la etapa inicial de la pandemia y el confinamiento que la acompañó. Por supuesto, diferentes canciones hablan sobre diferentes aspectos de ella o sobre cosas marginalmente relacionadas con ella, pero ese es sin duda el conductor principal entre las diversas letras.
MiM: “My Covenant” es una de las pistas del álbum que presenta variaciones vocales y musicales excepcionales. Junto a la excelente voz de Fabio Urietti, se escucha la voz de una mujer. ¿Quién es ella?
EO: Muchas gracias, es una canción muy querida para nosotros. La cantante femenina que podéis escuchar en “My Covenant” (y también en el tema “Chemical” que podréis escuchar una vez editado el disco) es Heike Langhans, ex cantante de Draconian y ahora en Remina (recién estrenaron su álbum debut, ¡échale un vistazo!). Fue realmente genial trabajar con ella en estas dos canciones, incluso si, por supuesto, fueron sesiones remotas. Nunca antes habíamos tenido una cantante, pero tan pronto como escuchamos sus grabaciones supimos que era algo especial, realmente esperamos poder involucrarla en algo más en el futuro, tal vez una sesión en vivo en el estudio o algo así.
MiM: Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de trabajar con los músicos que fueron invitados a formar parte del disco.
EO: Fue súper lindo, nos pusimos en contacto de diferentes maneras con ellos, conocimos a Don cuando tocamos en Bélgica en el festival Darken the Moon con Evoken, casi lo mismo con Alex cuando compartimos escenario con October Tied en Doom Over Kiev, y para Heike nos pusimos en contacto a través de Mike de Sojourner, que también toca en Remina y Light Field Reverie con ella, que ha sido una buena amiga nuestra durante casi 15 años, así que fue muy natural, y podemos No le agradezco lo suficiente el trabajo que ha hecho para las dos canciones en las que cantó, ya que en ese momento todavía estaba atrapada en Sudáfrica, sin poder viajar, pero logró tener en sus manos un equipo de grabación y ofrecer dos actuaciones impresionantes. haciendo que nuestras canciones sean increíblemente especiales para nosotros.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de componer música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen en la banda?
EO: Depende, para este álbum hemos estado bastante solos, lo que significa que algunas canciones fueron escritas de principio a fin por la misma persona, mientras que otros se compusieron en cooperación enviando archivos de un lado a otro entre nosotros, y luego se refinaron una vez que pudimos regresar a nuestra sala de ensayo y tocarlos "en vivo" varias veces. Para este álbum, Simone y Mauro compusieron casi toda la música, mientras que Fabio escribió todas las letras y compuso las líneas vocales en su mayoría solo, pero a veces junto con Simone y Jei, los dos Francescos (Genduso y Bassi) también contribuyeron en el fase de escritura tardía y durante las sesiones de grabación de batería, mientras que los invitados, aparte de algunas letras, tenían total libertad de sus partes. Fue muy diferente a los discos anteriores, solemos trabajar mucho más estando en la misma habitación, pero el confinamiento nos obligó a trabajar de otra manera, que por suerte, aunque un poco raro al principio, funcionó muy bien para a nosotros.
MiM. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
EO: Estamos trabajando en agendar shows en Italia y Europa para el 2023, no va a ser fácil contar que cientos de bandas han salido con discos y ahora están de gira, sin contar todas las giras y festivales que hubo que reprogramar, pero seguro que estaremos allí en algún momento, la mejor manera de mantenerse actualizado es seguirnos en todas las redes sociales, que también es la mejor manera de ponerse en contacto con nosotros en caso de que alguien quiera reservarnos para un espectáculo.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

The Italian Atmospheric Doom Metal band (EchO) will release their album 'Witnesses' on November 25 via Black Lion Records. Made in Metal talks with the band to find out everything about this album.
MiM: Hello, my name is Raul Cardona and it is a pleasure to talk with the band.
EO: Hi Raul! Our pleasure! Thanks for the space you’re giving us.
MiM: The name of the band and the way they decided to write it is very interesting. What is the concept behind the name of the band?
EO: The original name was Echoes of Perdition, but it was soon changed to (EchO) referring to the nymph in the Greek mythology of the same name, the brackets were added by some former members to make it more recognizable.
MiM: “Witnesses” (Black Lion Records, 2022) is a dense, heavy album with excellent well-achieved atmospheric passages. It takes us into an atmosphere that surrounds us and takes us through the songs of the album through a great story. What can you tell me about this album?EO: Thanks a lot, the album was written during the first lockdown of 2020, and in the few following months, all the lyrics (which are all written by our singer Fabio) are about the frustration and helplessness we felt during those months, all the uncertainty and despair the situation brought to us, being separated from our friends and relatives. The music was composed separately of the lyrics, but we think it was probably the best music to lyrics match we ever had on any of our works, since for the first time we were, although separated, all in the same situation, and, despite the distance, which forced us to work in a different way than usual, we probably felt a lot more connected with each other.
MiM: How was the recording and production process?
EO: The recording process, unlike the writing process, was pretty straightforward, we recorded drums (played by our fill-in drummer of 4 years now, Francesco Bassi) in a project studio in our area that was dismantled soon after our session, while vocals, guitars and bass tracks happened in our guitar player Simone’s home studio. Francesco Genduso from ONDA Studio took care of recording of the drums and mixing the album, Jei Doublerice of Despite Exile and Exiled Media took care of the production and recording of vocals, while our guitar player Simone took care of all guitars and bass tracking and re-amping, finally Greg Chandler of Esoteric and Priory Recording Studios took care of the mastering, as on all of our previous albums.
MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. Is “Witnesses” a concept album?
EO: It’s not exactly a concept album, although all the lyrics are connected to a single theme, which is Isolation and the distress that comes from it, which we all felt in the early stage of the pandemic and the lockdown that came with it, of course, different songs speak about different aspects of it or about things marginally related to it, that’s for sure the main conductor between the various lyrics.
MiM: “My Covenant” is one of the tracks on the album that features unique vocal and musical variations. Along with the excellent voice of Fabio Urietti, the voice of a woman is heard. Who is she?
EO: Thanks a lot, it’s a very dear song to us. The female singer you can hear on “My Covenant” (and also on the song “Chemical” that you’ll be able to listen to once the album is released) is Heike Langhans, former singer of Draconian and now in Remina (they just released their debut album, go check it out!). It was really cool working with her on these two songs, even if they were of course remote sessions. We never had a female singer before, but as soon as we heard her recordings we knew it was something special, we really hope to be able to involve her in something more in the future, maybe a live in-studio session or something like that.
MiM: Tell me about the experience of working with the musicians who were invited to be part of the album?
EO: It was super nice, we got in touch in different ways with them, we got to know Don when we played in Belgium at Darken the Moon festival with Evoken, almost the same thing with Alex when we shared the stage with October Tied at Doom Over Kiev, and for Heike we got in touch through Mike from Sojourner, that also plays in Remina and Light Field Reverie with her, who has been a good friend of ours for almost 15 years, so it was really natural, and we can’t thank her enough for the works she’s done for the two songs she sang on since at the time she was still stuck in South Africa, unable to travel, but managed to get her hands on some recording equipment and deliver two stunning performances, making our songs incredibly special to us.
MiM: How is the creative process of composing music, is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones who compose in the band?
EO: It depends, for this album we’ve been pretty much on our own, which means that some songs were written from start to finish by the same person, while some others were composed in cooperation sending files back and forward between us, and then refined once we were able to be back in our rehearsal room and play them “live” a few times. For this album, Simone and Mauro composed pretty much all the music, while Fabio wrote all lyrics and composed the vocal lines mostly on his own, but sometimes together with Simone and Jei, the two Francescos (Genduso and Bassi) also gave some input in the late writing phase and during the drums recording sessions, while the guests, other than some lyrics had complete freedom on their parts. It was a lot different than previous albums, we usually work a lot more while being in the same room, but the lockdown forced us to work in an other way, which luckily, although being a little weird at the beginning, worked very well for us.
MiM. What plans do you have to promote this album?
EO: We are working on booking shows in Italy and Europe for 2023, it’s not going to be easy counting that hundreds of bands have come out with albums and are now touring, without counting all the tours and festivals that had to be rescheduled, but we’ll be out there for sure at some point, the best way to stay updated is to follow us on all socials, which is also the best way to get in touch for us in case somebody wants to book us for a show!
