"Tuve que sonreír cuando Ghost ganó el premio al mejor álbum de rock"
La banda canadiense de rock progresivo The Wring lanzará su nuevo álbum "The Wring 3 - Spectra" el 16 de diciembre bajo el sello Wormholedeath Record. Made in Metal habla con su cerebro, el guitarrista y compositor Don Dewulf para saber todo sobre este disco.
MiM: ¿Cuéntanos sobre los inicios de la banda? ¿Dónde y cómo se formó? ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
DD: The Wring comenzó en Ontario, Canadá, como mi proyecto en solitario en 2015. Estaba escribiendo muchas canciones que pensé que eran bastante buenas y quería lanzarlas al público. Encontré algunos músicos aquí en mi ciudad y grabamos el primer disco (lanzado en 2017). Tocamos en algunos shows, pero los músicos locales no estaban interesados en grabar un segundo álbum, así que continué usando músicos de sesión, ¡así que supongo que volví a ser un solista!
MiM: The Wring 3 - Spectra (Wormholedeath, 2022) es un excelente álbum de Rock Progresivo!! ¡¡Sonido espectacular!! ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco?DD: ¡¡Gracias!! Estoy muy contento con este disco. Creo que he evolucionado como compositor y he mejorado en todos los aspectos de la creación de un álbum. Pude reunir a otro grupo de músicos increíbles para tocar las partes y les doy crédito por sus excelentes actuaciones y su muy amable atención a los detalles de mi música. Hay toques de metal, jazz y rock pesado en las canciones que crean algo que espero sea al menos algo único.
MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?
DD: Toda la grabación se realizó de forma remota. Los músicos son de todas partes de América del Norte. Creé versiones de demostración de cada canción y envié stems (compuestos de cada instrumento) a cada músico. Animé a cada uno a tocar lo que sintieran más adecuado para el estado de ánimo de cada canción. Cuando terminaran, enviarían sus interpretaciones. A veces las modificábamos un poco, pero la mayoría fueron excelentes. Mis demostraciones fueron muy detalladas, por lo que todos entendieron fácilmente lo que quería. Una vez que se completó la grabación, le envié todo a Francis Perron a Radicart Studios y él mezcló todas las interpretaciones en las versiones finales. Cada canción tenía más de 40 pistas, por lo que no fue una tarea fácil. Fue fantástico trabajar con Francis y realmente entendió lo que quería.
MiM: Este disco tiene varios invitados de lujo. Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de trabajar con Marco Minnemann. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
DD: Cuando mi banda renunció en 2018 y no pude encontrar ningún músico local para reemplazarlos, comencé a explorar la posibilidad de utilizar músicos de sesión. Hay un guitarrista fantástico aquí en Ontario, Canadá, Jason Sadites, que me inspiró. Ha hecho muchos discos excelentes utilizando solo músicos de sesión y ha atraído a algunos nombres muy importantes. Decidí que podía hacer lo mismo. El bajista original de The Wring, Jason Henrie, fue muy útil para mí en este sentido, conectándome con Thomas Lang, Bryan Beller y, más recientemente, ¡Marco Minnemann! Marco es un talento increíble; tal vez el mejor baterista de rock en la tierra en este momento. También fue muy amable y gentil. Le envié las canciones y al instante entendió lo que necesitaba. Grabó 2 o 3 tomas completas para cada canción y yo elegí cuál usar. Fue tan profesional y bien hecho. Estoy muy agradecido con Marco. MiM: La banda tiene una canción titulada “Cipher”, en la que aparece Thomas Lang, uno de los bateristas más completos de la historia del instrumento. ¿Cuéntame sobre la experiencia?
DD: Al igual que Marco, diría que Thomas es uno de los mejores bateristas de rock del mundo. Mi experiencia con Thomas también fue similar; muy profesional y muy atento a los detalles de la música. Thomas tocó en todas las canciones del segundo álbum de Wring: Project Cipher. Es un baterista muy poderoso y agregó una intensidad muy alta a ese disco. Thomas fue la primera persona 'famosa' con la que interactué y realmente me dio la confianza de que mi música podía ser digna de grandes músicos. Escribo estas canciones en mi sótano en el norte de Ontario, solo. Es muy valioso para un tipo como Thomas dedicar tanto tiempo y atención a mi trabajo cuando está tan ocupado con su escuela de música y otros proyectos; también muy humillante.
MiM: El sonido de la banda navega por el de bandas como Rush y Dream Theater. ¿Es tan? Estas dos bandas antes mencionadas tienen varios álbumes conceptuales en su carrera. ¿Podremos escuchar un álbum conceptual de The Wring en el futuro?
DD: Gracias. Me siento honrado de ser mencionado en la misma oración que cualquiera de esas bandas. Estuve/estoy muy influenciado por Rush de los 70 y principios de los 80 y es una de mis bandas favoritas de todos los tiempos. También soy fan de Dream Theater aunque creo que estoy menos influenciado por ellos que por otros como Opeth o Porcupine Tree. Cuando escribo música, soy muy crítico conmigo mismo. Si creo que un riff o una idea se parece demasiado a algo que ya existe, lo descarto o lo cambio. Por supuesto, ya se ha hecho todo, pero es muy divertido tomar todas estas influencias e intentar hacer algo que (con suerte) ¡no sea una estafa total! En cuanto a un disco conceptual, me acerco a la composición de canciones con una visión más de "Imágenes en movimiento" que de "Hemispheres" o "2112". Disfruto de la flexibilidad de explorar varios temas en un álbum, tanto musical como líricamente. Nunca descartaría un tema conceptual, pero probablemente no haría un álbum conceptual completo.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
DD: Spectra, como Project Cipher, son proyectos de estudio. No tengo una banda, por lo que los espectáculos no son posibles. Espero que algún día pueda volver a tocar canciones de Wring en vivo, pero ahora mismo no puedo. A pesar de esto, tengo un gran apoyo en la promoción de la música. En particular, tengo a Carlo y Naty en Wormholedeath Records respaldando la promoción y distribución y ambos han sido muy amables y entusiastas. (¿Es Coldplay 'rock'? ¡¿Imagine Dragons?!? ¿¡Qué carajos es esto!?). "I had to smile when Ghost won best rock album"
The Canadian Progressive Rock band The Wring will release their new album "The Wring 3 - Spectra" on December 16 under the Wormholedeath Record. Made in Metal talks with his mastermind, the guitar player and songwrite Don Dewulf to find out everything about this album.
MiM: Tell us about the beginnings of the band? Where and how was it formed? How did the idea come about ?
DD: The Wring began in Ontario, Canada as my solo project back in 2015. I was writing a lot of songs that I thought were pretty good and wanted to release them to the public. I found some players here in my town and we recorded the first album (released in 2017). We played some shows but the local players were not interested in recording a second album so I continued using session players, so I guess I’m back to being a solo artist!
MiM: The Wring 3 - Spectra (Wormholedeath, 2022) is an excellent Progressive Rock album!! Spectacular sound!! What can you tell me about this record?DD: Thanks!! I am very happy with this record. I think that I have evolved as a composer and have become better at all aspects of creating an album. I was able to gather another group of excellent musicians to play the parts and I credit them for great performances and very kind attention to the details of my music. There are hints of metal, jazz and heavy rock in the songs which creates something that I hope is at least somewhat unique.
MiM: How was the process of recording and musical production? What recording studio did it take place in?
DD: All of the recording was done remotely. The musicians are from all parts of North America. I created demo versions of each song and sent stems (composites of each instrument) to each player. I encouraged each to play what they felt best suited the mood of each song. When they were done, they would send back their interpretations. Sometimes we would tweak them a little bit but most were excellent. My demos were very detailed, so they all easily understood what I wanted. Once the recording was complete, I sent everything to Francis Perron at Radicart Studios and he mixed all of the performances into the final versions. Each song had over 40 tracks so this was not an easy task. Francis was fantastic to work with and really understood what I wanted.
MiM: This album has several luxury guests. Tell me about the experience of working with Marco Minnemann? How did the idea come about?
DD: When my band quit in 2018 and I couldn’t find any local players to replace them, I started exploring the possibility of using session musicians. There is a fantastic guitar player here in Ontario, Canada – Jason Sadites – that inspired me. He has done many excellent records using only session players and has attracted some very big names. I decided I could do the same. The original bass player for The Wring, Jason Henrie, was very helpful to me in this regard, connecting me with Thomas Lang, Bryan Beller and, most recently, Marco Minnemann! Marco is an incredible talent; maybe the best rock drummer on earth right now. He was also very kind and gracious. I sent him the songs and he instantly understood what was needed. He recorded 2 or 3 full takes for each song and I chose which to use. It was so professional and well done. I am very grateful to Marco. I also have to recognize the other guys – Reggie Hache, Chandler Mogel and Isamu McGregor. They are maybe not as ‘famous’ as Marco but they have top-level skills and really did an unbelievable job on the songs!!
MiM: The band has a song entitled “Cipher”, which features Thomas Lang, one of the most complete drummers in the history of the instrument. Tell me about the experience?
DD: Like Marco, I would say Thomas is one of the top rock drummers in the world. My experience with Thomas was also similar; very professional and very attentive to the details of the music. Thomas played on all of the songs on the second Wring album – Project Cipher. He is a very powerful drummer and added a very high intensity to that record. Thomas was the first ‘famous’ person that I interacted with and he really gave me the confidence that my music could be worthy of great players. I write these songs in my basement in Northern Ontario, alone. It is very validating for a guy like Thomas to give such time and kind attention to my work when he is so busy with his music school and other projects; also very humbling.
MiM: The band's sound navigates that of bands like Rush and Dream Theater. Is it so? These two aforementioned bands have several conceptual albums in their career. Will we be able to hear a concept album from The Wring in the future?
DD: Thank you. I am humbled to even be mentioned in the same sentence as either of those bands. I was/am very heavily influenced by 70’s and early 80’s Rush and they are one of my favorite bands of all time. I am also a Dream Theater fan though I think I am less influenced by them than by others such as Opeth or Porcupine Tree. When I write music, I am very critical of myself. If I think a riff or idea is too close to something that already exists, I scrap it or change it. Of course, everything has already been done but its great fun to take all these influences and try to make something that (hopefully) isn’t a total rip off! As for a concept record, I approach songwriting with more of a “Moving Pictures” view than a “Hemispheres” or “2112” one. I enjoy the flexibility of exploring various themes on an album, both musically and lyrically. I’d never rule out a conceptual theme but probably would not do a full-blown concept album.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?
DD: Spectra, like Project Cipher, are studio projects. I don’t have a band, so shows are not possible. I hope someday I can play Wring songs live again but can’t right now. In spite of this, I have some great support in promoting the music. Most notably I have Carlo and Naty at Wormholedeath records backing the promotion and distribution and they have both been very kind and enthusiastic. I’ve also been lucky enough to employ the skills and networks of Jon Asher at Asher Media and Erin Buell at The Band Strategist to help get the album into hands and ears. Both of them have been invaluable. I should also mention that Reggie Hache, who played bass on this record, also created videos for some of the songs. I love what he did.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
DD: Music is weird now. It’s pretty much free and streamed at poor quality through even poorer quality devices. I hope kids can get back to music in a meaningful way some day. In the meantime, heavy and obscure bands and fans need to be creative to keep the spirit alive. I watched part of The American Music Awards last night. For the most part, it was horrifying but I had to smile when Ghost won best rock album. Tobias is so clever. He writes catchy songs with great riffs and sinister lyrics about Satan, it’s fantastic! I suspect the judges did not take the time to read the lyrics… hah! (Is Coldplay ‘rock’? Imagine Dragons?!? WTF?). For me, I am encouraged by the response to my music from all around the world and am super grateful to everyone that has helped me along the way. I hope everyone will like Spectra!
