"El nombre de la banda proviene del libro de Aldous Huxley 'Brave New World'"
La banda griega de heavy rock influenciada por Garage Rock Half Gramme of Soma lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Slip Through The Cracks' el 30 de septiembre vía SOL Records. Oportunidad para Made in Metal de conversar con la banda para y coonocer más del disco y su historia
MiM: ¿Cómo fueron los inicios de la banda? ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda y cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?
HGoS: Nos formamos como banda a principios de 2011 y la idea surgió de nuestra necesidad de sacar lo que teníamos dentro... ya que la música es una forma de comunicación muy hermosa. El nombre de la banda proviene del libro de Aldous Huxley 'Brave New World'. En este libro, la píldora SOMA era una forma de controlar y manipular sentimientos y pensamientos... pero la mitad del gramo es solo para la mitad de las vacaciones... así que funciona perfecto para nosotros.
MiM: 'Slip Through The Cracks' (SOL Records, 2022) presume de un sonido profundo y envolvente. Es una mezcla de lo mejor del Grunge de los 90 y el Brit Pop. ¡Suena increíble! ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco? ¿De qué se trata?
HGoS: ¡Gracias, estamos muy contentos de que te haya gustado! Como dijiste, encontrarás muchas influencias de los 90 en el álbum, ya que esta es la música con la que crecimos pero que aún escuchamos hoy. Este álbum es lo que hemos tenido dentro de nuestras mentes y almas todo el tiempo desde nuestro álbum anterior 'Groove is Black'. Todos pasamos por algunos momentos sin precedentes, maduramos como unidades, pero también como banda y capturamos todo esto en nuestro nuevo álbum. En cuanto a las letras ahora, tratan principalmente temas cotidianos desde un punto de vista surrealista donde cada uno puede interpretar como desee.MiM: "Slip Through The Cracks" es un disco que cuando lo escucho me siento muy cercano a bandas como Red Hot Chilli Pepper. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto? Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tenían muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.
HGoS: Todos somos fans de RHCP y tienes razón, puedes encontrar varios elementos de ellos en nuestra música en temas como “Magnetar” por ejemplo. También somos grandes fans de John Frusciante con Peppers y su trabajo en solitario y no lo ocultamos. Sobre el sonido ahora... sí, teníamos una imagen completa de lo que queríamos lograr... un sonido claro que respira y no te ahogas en el bajo excesivo y el fuzz que encuentras en muchas producciones del género.
MiM: En casi todo el disco escucho claras influencias del Stoner Rock. Es un álbum excelente que podría acercar a la banda a un público más amplio. ¿Cómo lo ves? ¿Cómo os ha sido presentado el disco en directo?
HGoS: Nos gusta y escuchamos mucho stoner rock y bandas como Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Orange Goblin, pero también algunas bandas más psicodélicas, pero nunca hacemos ni creamos nada para atraer a una audiencia más grande. Lo único que nos importa es que primero nos guste y luego, si al mundo exterior también le gusta, definitivamente nos hará felices, especialmente si combina eso con la interacción en vivo.
MiM: Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de jugar con Monster Magnet.
HGoS: Solo tocamos un show en Atenas con Monster Magnet y fue un gran placer y un honor para nosotros compartir el escenario con una de nuestras mayores influencias. Sin embargo, nuestras dos giras europeas fueron con otra gran banda griega, Naxatras, ¡y ya estamos ansiosos por la próxima gira!
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
HGoS: Por lo general, alguien de nosotros trae un riff o más o una idea en general y luego comienza el proceso de colaboración, que consiste en comunicarlo juntos improvisando o incluso hablando de ello verbalmente. El siguiente paso es colocar en el lugar adecuado cada instrumento y sigue el apartado de las melodías vocales y las letras. Cada miembro juega un papel crucial durante este proceso y agrega su “toque” personal en el resultado. En la última etapa del proceso está la grabación y la elección de la proporción de sonidos que transforma cada canción en su forma final.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. A. ¿De quién era el cargo? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
HGoS: Nos alegra mucho que te guste, a nosotros también. Grabamos en dos lugares diferentes. La primera fue en el “roof top studio” de nuestro amigo e ingeniero de sonido Nick Chalkousis en el que se realizó la grabación de la batería. Luego nos mudamos a nuestro estudio personal en Kallithea de Atenas y bajo la guía de nuestro ingeniero de sonido George Leodis grabamos el resto de los instrumentos uno por uno. George también hizo el trabajo de mezcla y luego enviamos el material mezclado a Audiosiege Studios y Brad Boatright para la masterización. Por supuesto que estamos muy contentos con el sonido que logramos y creemos que el resultado final es muy parecido o incluso mejor de lo que habíamos imaginado antes de las grabaciones.
MiM: Son una banda con varios años de formación con discos y conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?
HGoS: Los primeros años de la banda estaban en un constante estado de formación con varios cambios verales de miembros. Así que el álbum debut de demostración de s-t es, de alguna manera, una introducción de la banda, un esfuerzo puro que colocó a la banda en la escena musical. En este álbum también hay algunos ingredientes del futuro sonido de Half Gramme Of Soma en un estilo de rock más firme. Están surgiendo más sonidos groovy-heavy rock-grunge-psicodélico y en 2017 lanzamos el álbum "Groove Is Black". de lo que estamos muy orgullosos y es en cierto modo la señal de lo que estamos haciendo hasta ahora. Con el lanzamiento de este álbum llegó nuestra primera gira europea, algunos grandes conciertos con bandas favoritas y una difusión más amplia de la música de la banda. En cualquier caso considerando la vida de la banda todos estos años podemos decir que todo lo que hemos hecho se basó en el verdadero amor por la música y la creación.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando sacas un disco nuevo, lo normal después es darle vueltas. ¿Qué planes tenéis para promocionar este disco?
HGoS: Ya hemos tenido una gira europea con Naxatras que tuvo un gran éxito. Tocamos en varios clubes increíbles con entradas agotadas en países como Alemania, Suiza, Italia, Austria y Holanda y participamos en la programación de algunos grandes festivales como Desertfest, "Up In Smoke" y "Keep It Low". Este fue como el primer paso de nuestros planes de promoción. Ahora estamos organizando los próximos pasos que concluyen algunos conciertos en Grecia o incluso una gira local y luego esperamos poder realizar otra gira europea con el apoyo de nuestro sello "SOL" y tocar en nuevos lugares y multitudes. .

The Garage Rock-influenced Heavy Rock band Half Gramme of Soma released their new album "Slip Through The Cracks" on September 30 on SOL Records. Opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with the band to learn everything about this album and the history of the band.
MiM: How were the beginnings of the band? How did the idea of creating the band come about and what is the concept behind the name of the band?
HGoS: We formed as a band in early 2011 and the idea came from our need to bring out what we had inside us…as music is a very beautiful way of communication. The name of the band comes from Aldous Huxley book ‘Brave New World’ in this book the pill SOMA was a way to control and manipulate feelings and thoughts…but half gramme it’s only for half holiday…so it works perfectly for us
MiM: "Slip Through The Cracks" (SOL Records, 2022) boasts a deep and enveloping sound. It's a mix of the best of 90's Grunge and Brit Pop. It sounds amazing! What can you tell me about this record? What’s it about?
HGoS: Thank you, we are very glad that you liked it! As you said you will meet a lot of 90s influences in the album since this is the music we grew up with but still listen to today. This album is what we’ve had inside our minds and souls all the time since our previous album ‘Groove is Black’. We all went through some unprecedented moments, we matured as units but also as a band and we capture all this in our new album. About the lyrics now, they mainly deal with everyday issues from a surreal point of view that each of you can interpret as you wish.MiM: "Slip Through The Cracks" is a record that when I listen to it I feel very close to bands like Red Hot Chilli Pepper. What can you tell me about it? I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.
HGoS: We are all fans of RHCP and you are right, you can find several elements of them in our music in tracks like “Magnetar” for example. We are also huge John Frusciante fans with Peppers and his solo work and we don’t hide it. About the sound now…yeah we had a complete image of what we want to achieve…a clear sound that breathes and you don’t drown in the excessive bass and fuzz that you find in many productions of the genre.
MiM: In almost the entire album I hear clear influences from Stoner Rock. It is an excellent album which could bring the band to a larger audience. How do you see him? How has the album been presented to you live?
HGoS: We like it and listen to a lot of stoner rock and bands like Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Orange Goblin but also some more psychedelic bands but we never do or create anything to attract a bigger audience. All we care about is that we like it first and then if the outside world likes it too it definitely makes us happy especially if you combine that with live interaction.
MiM: Tell me about the experience of playing with Monster Magnet?
HGoS: We only played one show in Athens with Monster Magnet and it was a great pleasure and honor for us to share the stage with one of our biggest influences. Our two European tours though was with another great Greek band Naxatras and we already look forward to the next tour!
MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall on one or two people?
HGoS: Usually one of us brings in a riff or more or an idea in general and then begins the collaborative process, which is to communicate it together by jamming it or even talking about it verbally. The next step is to put in the right place each instrument and then follow the section of the vocal melodies and the lyrics. Every member plays a crucial role during this process and adds his personal “touch” to the result. The last stage of the process is the recording and the choice of the ratio of sounds which transforms each song into its final form.
MiM: The production, mixing and mastering work is impeccable. A. Whose position was it? In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?
HGoS: We are very glad that you like it, we do also too. We recorded it in two different places. The first one was at the “rooftop studio” of our friend and sound engineer Nick Chalkousis where took place the recording of the drums was. Then we moved into our personal studio in Kallithea of Athens and by the guidance of our sound engineer George Leodis we recorded the rest of the instruments one by one. George also did the mixing work and then we sent the mixed stuff to Audiosiege Studios and Brad Boatright for mastering. Of course, we are very happy with the sound we succeed and we think the final result is very close or even better than what we had imagined before the recordings.
MiM: They are a band with several years of training with records and concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?
HGoS: The first years of the band were in a constant state of forming with several changes of members. So the demo debut s-t album is in a way an introduction to the band, a pure effort that placed the band in the music scene. In this album, there also are some ingredients of the future sound of Half Gramme Of Soma in a more steady rock style. More groovy-heavy rock-grunge-psychedelic sounds are coming to the surface and in 2017 we released the “Groove Is Black” album of which we are very proud and is in a way the signpost of what we are doing up till now. With the release of this album came to our first European tour, some great lives with favorite bands, and a wider spread of the band’s music. In any case, considering the band’s life all these years, we can say that all that we have done were based on the true love of music and creation.
MiM: Normally when you put out a new record, the normal thing to do afterward is to spin it. What plans do you have to promote this record?
HGoS: We’ve already had a European tour with Naxatras which had great success. We played in several awesome sold-out clubs in Countries like Germany, Swiss, Italy, Austria, and Holland and participated in the lineup of some big festivals like Desertfest, “Up In Smoke” and “Keep It Low”. This was like the first step of our promotion plans. Now we’re organizing the next steps which conclude some lives in Greece or even a local tour and then we are expecting to be able to carry out another European tour with the support of our label “SOL” and play in some new places and crowds.
