"Nos hemos mantenido fieles a lo que yo pienso que hace que nuestra música sea popular"
La banda estadounidense Lansdowne, con sede en Boston, lanzó su nuevo álbum ‘Medicine’ el pasado 3 de febrero bajo el prestigioso sello AFM Records. Made in Metal contactó con el cantante Jon Ricci para hablar sobre este álbum y la historia de la banda.
MiM: Son una banda formada en el 2006. ¿Cómo surge la idea? ¿Cómo valoraría el trabajo realizado en todo este tiempo?
JR: Shaun y yo comenzamos la banda cuando él tenía 17 años y yo 23. A los dos nos apasionaba crear música y queríamos una salida para hacer arte que inspirara a la gente y fuera divertido de escuchar en shows en vivo. Los últimos 17 años han sido un viaje increíble con muchos altibajos, pero siempre valió la pena, incluso en los momentos difíciles. Es una lección de humildad e inspiración ver a nuestros fans en conciertos y saber de ellos en las redes sociales. Estamos muy agradecidos por su lealtad y energía.
MiM: “Medicine” (AFM Records, 2023) es un excelente álbum. Sonido claro, riff pegadizo y base sólida. Al escucharlo siento una marcada influencia del llamado post-grunge de mediados de los 90. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?JR: Siempre es interesante aprender sobre lo que los oyentes de nuestra música escuchan en las canciones. Para mí, es difícil decir exactamente de dónde viene la influencia o de qué sonidos sacamos. Escuchamos muchos tipos diferentes de música y estoy seguro de que cada uno de nuestros estilos y gustos individuales contribuye al sonido que se ha formado y sigue evolucionando a lo largo de los años.
Este disco es una colección de canciones nuevas con algunas de las antiguas favoritas. Me encanta que hayamos podido sacar algo que tiene canciones pesadas y ligeras, y que nos hemos mantenido fieles a lo que yo pienso que hace que nuestra música sea popular, que es melódica y construida para espectáculos en vivo.
MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tienen una idea clara de cómo era el sonido de la banda.
JR: El sonido ha evolucionado a lo largo de los años. Al principio estaba mucho más orientado al pop rock, más cerca de Goo Goo Dolls. Luego comenzamos a escribir y tocar canciones más pesadas y de más alto tiempo cuando entramos en la era Warped Tour de nuestra carrera y encontramos mucho éxito localmente en la escena pop punk. A medida que crecimos, maduramos al igual que el sonido, y un sonido de rock duro/rock moderno más directo se convirtió en lo que nos hizo conocidos. Hoy, seguimos jugando igual, pero tal vez con una ventaja más fuerte.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
JR: Hay momentos en los que nos reunimos y escribimos como una banda completa. Por ejemplo, "Medicine" se escribía con todos en la misma habitación. La mayoría de las veces, somos Shaun y yo trabajando juntos en ideas y desarrollando una demostración para mostrársela a los muchachos y recibir comentarios. Ha sido mi compañero de escritura desde el principio y hay una química creativa e intuición que es muy especial y rara.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
JR: Shaun produce y mezcla nuestros discos en su estudio, Red13 en Framingham, Massachusetts, EE. UU. Él es nuestro hombre.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando sacas un nuevo disco, lo normal después es salir de gira. ¿Qué planes tienen para promocionar este club?
JR: Somos afortunados de tener un gran sello discográfico y un equipo de radio en Europa, y ahí es donde estará nuestro enfoque. The American band Lansdowne, based in Boston, released their new album "Medicine" on February 3 under the prestigious AFM Records label. Made in Metal talks with the singer Jon Ricci to find out everything about this album and the band's history.
MiM: They are a band formed in 2006. How did the idea of starting the band come about? How have these 17 years of career been? How would you value the work done in all this time?
JR: Shaun and I started the band when he was 17 and I was 23. We were both passionate about creating music and wanted an outlet for making art that would inspire people and be fun to listen to at live shows. The last 17 years have been an incredible journey with a lot of ups and downs but always been worth it even through difficult times. It is humbling and inspiring to see our fans at concerts and hear from them on social media. We are very much appreciative of their loyalty and energy.
MiM: “Medicine” (AFM Records, 2023) is an excellent album. Clear sound, catchy riffs, and a solid base. Listening to it, I feel a marked influence of the so-called post-grunge of the mid-90s. What can you tell me about this album?JR: It’s always interesting to learn about what listeners of our music heard in the songs. For me, it’s hard to say exactly where the influence has come from or what sounds we pull from. We listen to a lot of different types of music and I’m sure that each of our individual styles and tastes contributes to the sound that has formed and continued to evolve over the years.
This record is a collection of new songs with a few of our favorite older songs sprinkled in. I love that we’ve been able to put something out there that has both heavy and lighter songs and that we’ve stayed true to what I think makes our music popular, which is that it’s melodic and built for live shows.
MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning they already have a clear idea of what the sound of the band was.
JR: The sound has evolved over the years. At first, it was much more pop-rock oriented, closer to a Goo Goo Dolls. Then we began writing and playing heavier, more high-tempo songs as we entered the Warped Tour era of our career and found a lot of success locally in the pop-punk scene. As we grew, we matured as did the sound, and a more straightforward hard rock/modern rock sound became what we were known for. Today, we’re playing that same still but maybe with a heavier edge.
MiM: What is the creative process like when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall on one or two people?
JR: There are times that we’ve gotten together and written as a full band. For example, medicine was written with everyone in the same room. Most of the time, it’s Shaun and me working through ideas together and fleshing out a demo to show the guys and get feedback. He’s been my writing partner since the beginning and there is a creative chemistry and intuition there that is very special and rare.
MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. A. Whose charge was it? In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?
JR: Shaun produces and mixes our records at his studio, Red13 in Framingham, Massachusetts, USA. He’s our guy.
MiM: Normally when you put out a new record, the normal thing to do afterward is touring. What planes do they have to promote this club?
JR: We’re fortunate to have a great label and radio team in Europe, and that’s where our focus will be. We really feel like the European markets get us and we’re seeing some really inspiring growth across the continent. Overall, I’d say look for more singles and some touring later in 2023.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
JR: There’s no way we could’ve made it 17 years without you. You all are the reason we write and play music, and our greatest motivation is seeing you at our shows so that we can share these songs and experiences together. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for everything.
