"No hay productores ni escritores fantasmas detrás del álbum"
La banda de metal alternativo The 40 Thieves, con sede en Saint City, Suiza, lanzó su álbum "The White Album" bajo Wormholedeath Records. Made in Metal habla con la banda para conocer todo sobre este disco y su historia.
MÍM. ¿Cómo surge la idea de la banda?
Dee: En la banda anterior en la que toqué, Stoneman, no participé en la composición. Sin embargo, había música en mi cabeza que quería escribir y producir. Y así fue como comencé la banda. Fue una especie de emancipación para mí. Lejos de ser solo el bajista, para escribir canciones, arreglar y producir. Es algo totalmente diferente tener el control de lo que estás haciendo y luego, por supuesto, poder respaldarlo al 100%.
Davide: Dee y yo comenzamos a generar muchas ideas primero. Al principio, era más como una sesión improvisada, hasta que encontramos el flujo, tomó algunas semanas. Normalmente nos reuníamos en mi sala de música los fines de semana. Todas las ideas surgieron de allí. Es un lugar tranquilo donde puedes beber cerveza y ser creativo. Pronto llegó la pandemia. Tuvimos que enviar bocetos de canciones y partituras en línea a los otros miembros de la banda. Hubo más reuniones en línea y toda la organización no fue más fácil para nosotros. Intercambiamos muchas pistas de instrumentos en vivo con los miembros de la banda. Entonces, la grabación del álbum no se llevó a cabo normalmente en un estudio de grabación donde todos los muchachos tocan los instrumentos en vivo. Pero vivimos en un mundo loco y siempre hay que buscar una forma alternativa. Sin embargo, nos recompusimos y escribimos más y más canciones hasta que decidimos que esta nueva selección encajaría bien para un álbum debut. Tuvimos los bocetos de las canciones muy pronto y todo el proceso tomó más de un año.
Artur: Para mí fue cuando Dee se me acercó con una propuesta para tocar algunas cosas en condiciones de sesión, práctica habitual hoy en día, ya ves. Así que me gustaron las pistas que se les ocurrieron a los muchachos, les gustaron los riffs que escribí para las pistas, ¡así que hizo clic! Lástima que estuviéramos tan lejos el uno del otro, pero las cosas cambiaron y me mudé un poco al oeste.
MiM: The White Album (Wormholedeath Records, 2022) es un álbum con un sonido increíble, excelentes melodías y riffs de guitarra pegadizos y bien trabajados. ¿Qué me podrías decir sobre este álbum?Dee: ¡Lo bueno de un álbum que escribes y produces tú mismo es, por supuesto, que resulta como lo quieres (risas)! No, en serio, creo que los chicos y yo solo hacemos el 100% de lo que escuchamos y nos gusta en privado. Es así de simple. No hay productores ni escritores fantasmas detrás del álbum. La etiqueta también nos da carta blanca. Acabamos de hacer lo que creemos que es buena música sin pensar en casilleros, y de ahí nació un álbum conceptual llamado "The White Album", ¡del cual estamos increíblemente orgullosos!
Davide: Con "The White Album" queríamos mantener un núcleo de rock en las canciones y no volvernos demasiado experimentales. Siempre me ha sorprendido lo bien que podemos trabajar juntos musicalmente. Si la ideología y el estado de ánimo coinciden, creo que puedes hacer muchos compromisos en la música. Poco a poco nos abrimos camino hacia nuestro álbum debut. Qué es posible, en qué dirección vamos en el futuro. Dee y yo siempre estamos abiertos. Quién sabe, tal vez nuestro segundo álbum suene completamente diferente. Eso lo decidimos nosotros, pero también hasta cierto punto nuestros fans.
Arthur: ¡ay, gracias! Fue una gran experiencia en general, y puedo decir desde mi perspectiva que el álbum resultó ser sólido, no en términos de riffs o sonido, aunque también estamos orgullosos de él, pero para mí es la imagen. En general, puedes escucharlo de principio a fin y se sentirá como una aventura, una historia completa con sus clímax y partes relajantes, bien escrita y construida.
MiM: ¡¡"My Lunatic" es una canción espectacular!! Fuerza, melodía y pasión. La voz de "The Highlander" Dillon rasga impresionantemente. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?
Dee: Si Raul, yo lo veo igual. Cuando terminó la canción, pensé que se había vuelto bastante larga. Esta canción lo tiene todo. Una parte extremadamente agresiva al principio con las voces guturales. Luego el verso suavemente cantado. Luego el puente, cantado en un ritmo que recuerda a "Disturbed". Y luego el coro con su melodía pegadiza. La parte intermedia extremadamente agresiva y ni hablemos del final, que nuevamente lleva la canción en una dirección melódica completamente diferente. Solo pensé, maldita sea, ¡esta es nuestra obra magna! Supe desde el principio que esta canción necesitaba un videoclip. Qué es lo que hicimos. Y creo que el clip captura muy bien la historia.
MiM: Hay muchos puntos en común con bandas como Linkin' Park y Five Finger Death Punch entre otras. ¿Es tan? ¿Cómo lo ves?
Artur: Como me di cuenta, lo que compongo no solo tiene la influencia de mi banda favorita, sino que es una mezcla de todo lo que he amado y admirado. A veces, encuentro paralelismos con bandas, que me olvidé por completo y estaba obsesionado en la infancia, solo cuando mi amigo me lo señala, como "oh, eso me recuerda a esa canción, recuerda, la escuchamos en 20 00 algo”, entonces estoy como ¡ohhhh!
Dee: Es muy gracioso que menciones esas dos bandas. Estas son ahora, por ejemplo, dos bandas que yo mismo escucho muy a menudo. Como ya se mencionó, hacemos la música que nos gusta, por lo que tiene mucho sentido que también incorporemos un poco de la influencia de estas bandas en nuestra música.
MiM: “If We Die Tonight” es un hermoso tributo a Chester Bennington. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
Dee: Es bueno escuchar que te gusta. Esta canción fue la primera canción que escribí para la banda antes de que la banda existiera. Estaba tan conmocionado por la muerte de Chester que lo trabajé a través de la música y así es como surgió esta canción. También puedes decir que esta canción fue el comienzo de la banda y todavía significa mucho para mí hasta el día de hoy.
MiM: "The Highlander" Dillon tiene un registro vocal con varios rangos que le permiten hacer que su voz pase de un sonido melódico a una voz quebrada y gutural. ¿Tienes formación académica o eres empírico?
Dee: Hablaré por Steve ya que no está aquí hoy. Es un cantante sumamente intuitivo y emotivo que puedes escuchar al 100% en el álbum. Pasamos tantos días y noches juntos para perfeccionar los arreglos vocales. ¡Hubo momentos en que quiso matarme! ¡Pensó varias veces "qué carajo quiere este tipo de mí"! Pero al menos al principio era tan increíblemente perfeccionista que reescribía las notas más pequeñas. Steve no tiene antecedentes académicos, deja que sus sentimientos fluyan libremente y eso es algo bueno.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
Davide: Te sorprenderá, pero todo el procedimiento se creó en el estudio de música de Dee y mío. Compusimos y arreglamos las canciones. Luego recibimos pistas de guitarra adicionales de Artur. Todo esto se mezcló en Logic Pro X. Solo la mezcla final y la masterización se realizaron de forma externa en un estudio en Hannover, Alemania. Hoy en día puedes crear grabaciones realmente geniales con un poco de conocimiento. Las grabaciones de sonido en estudios profesionales son muy caras y hay que calcularlo todo porque nuestro presupuesto es limitado. Por supuesto, sería muy bueno si algún día pudiéramos trabajar con un ingeniero de sonido.
MiM: ¿Cómo describirías un show en vivo de The 40 Thieves?
Dee: Todos somos artistas incondicionales, por lo que siempre lo damos todo. Personalmente, odio los conciertos de rock en los que se ve que la banda no está dando todo. ¡Quiero que el espectador obtenga algo por su dinero! Que pueda decir cuando se va a casa: Joder "Los 40 Ladrones" lo dieron todo que gran banda!
Davide: Breve y al grano: un espectáculo honesto y muy enérgico con mucho sudor y amor.
Artur: Puedo decir que la energía entre nosotros es excelente, ¡saltaremos el escenario, bebé!
MiM: Normalmente cuando sacas un disco nuevo, lo normal es salir de gira. ¿Qué planes tenéis para promocionar este disco?
Dee: Hacemos muchas cosas, ¿por dónde empiezo? La discográfica se hace cargo de una parte. En especial el equipamiento de las radios y webzine y revistas impresas a nivel mundial. También la distribución física del CD. Por nuestra parte acabamos de publicar el quinto videoclip "Incondicional". También estamos desarrollando un sitio web interactivo donde nuestros fans pueden hacer cosas diferentes. Lo mejor es ir a www.the40th.com ya que siempre estás al día. Además, iremos a Nueva York la semana que viene para una gran historia de la revista Powerplay Rock en inglés y celebraremos nuestro lanzamiento en EE. UU. allí también. Después de eso, comienza la planificación de la gira, que no será hasta 2024.
MiM: ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como Wormholedeath Records a una banda como The 40 Thieves para consolidarse en la escena?

Alternative Metal band The 40 Thieves, based in Saint City, Switzerland released their album "The White Album" under Wormholedeath Records. Made in Metal talks with the band to find out everything about this album and their history.
MIM. How did the idea of the band come about?
Dee: In the previous band I played in, “Stoneman”, I wasn't involved in the songwriting. However, there was music in my head that I wanted to write and produce. And that's how I started the band. It was a kind of emancipation for me. Away from just being the bass player, to songwriting, arranging, and producing. It's something different to be in control of what you're doing and then of course to be able to stand behind it 100%.
Davide: Me and Dee started brainstorming a lot of ideas first. In the beginning, it was more like a jam session, but until we found the flow it took a few weeks. We usually met in my music room on weekends. All ideas came from there. It's a quiet place where you can drink beer and be creative. The pandemic soon came. We had to send song sketches and scores online to the other band members. There were more online meetings and the whole organization didn't get any easier for us. We exchanged many instrument tracks live with the band members. So the recording for the album didn't happen typically in a recording studio where all the guys play the instruments live. But we live in a crazy world and you always have to look for an alternative way. Nevertheless, we pulled ourselves together and wrote more and more songs until we decided that this newly created selection of songs would fit well for a debut album. We had the song sketches pretty soon and the whole process took over a year.
Artur: For me it was when Dee approached me with a proposal to play some stuff on session condition, usual practice nowadays you see. So I liked the tracks that the guys came up with, and they liked the riffs I wrote for the tracks, so it clicked! Shame we were so far away from each other, but things change and I moved west a bit.
MiM: The White Album (Wormholedeath Records, 2022) is an album with an amazing sound, excellent melodies and catchy, well-crafted guitar riffs. What could you tell me about this album?Dee: The nice thing about an album that you write and produce yourself is of course that it just turns out the way you want it (laughs)! No, seriously, I think the guys and I just do 100% what we hear and like privately. It's that simple. There are no producers or ghostwriters behind the album. The label also gives us a free hand. We just made what we think is great music without thinking in pigeonholes, and from that, a concept album called "The White Album" was born, which we are incredibly proud of!
Davide: With "The White Album" we wanted to keep a rock core in the songs and not become too much experimental. It always amazed me, how well we can work together musically. If the ideology and the mood match, I think you can make a lot of compromises in music. We slowly felt our way into our debut album. What is possible, in which direction do we go in the future? I and Dee are always open. Who knows, maybe our second album will sound completely different. We decide that, but also to a certain extent our fans.
Artur: Oh, thank you! It was a great experience overall, and I can say from my perspective that the album turned out to be a solid one, not in terms of riffs, or sound, although we’re proud of it as well, for me its the picture overall, you can listen to it from start to end and it will feel like an adventure, a complete story with its climaxes and chill parts, well written and build.
MiM: "My Lunatic" is a spectacular song!! Strength, melody, and passion. "The Highlander" Dillon's voice rips impressively. What can you tell me about this topic?
Dee: Yes Raul, I see it the same way. When the song was finished, I thought the song had become quite long. This song has it all. The extremely aggressive part at the beginning is with the guttural vocals. Then the softly sung verse. Then the bridge, sung in a rhythm reminiscent of "Disturbed". And then the chorus with its catchy melody. The extremely aggressive intermediate part and let's not even talk about the end, which again leads the song in a completely different melodic direction. I just thought to myself, damn shit, this is our opus magnum! I knew from the start that this song needed a video clip. Which is what we did. And I think the clip captures the story very well.
There are many points in common with bands like Linkin' Park and Five Finger Death Punch among others. Is it so? How do you see it?
Artur: As I realized for myself, what I compose has not just an influence of someone from my favorite band, but it’s a mix of everything I have ever loved and admired. Sometimes, I find parallels with bands, that I completely forgot about and was obsessed with in childhood, only when my friend points it to me, like “oh, that reminds me of that song, remember, we listened to in 2000 something”, then I am like ohhhh!
Dee: That's funny you mention those two bands. These are now, for example, two bands that I listen to very often myself. As already mentioned, we make music that we like, so it makes a lot of sense that we also incorporate a bit of the influence of these bands into our music.
MiM: “If We Die Tonight” is a beautiful tribute to Chester Bennington. How did the idea come about?
Dee: Nice to hear you like it. This song was the first song I wrote for the band before the band even existed. I was so shocked by the death of Chester that I worked it through the music and that's how this song came about. You can also say that this song was the start of the band and it still means a lot to me to this day.
MiM: "The Highlander" Dillon has a vocal register with several ranges that allow him to make his voice from a melodic sound to a cracked and guttural voice. Do you have an academic background or are you empirical?
Dee: I'll speak for Steve since he's not here today. He is an extremely intuitive and emotional singer that you can hear 100% on the album. We spent so many days and nights together to perfect the vocal arrangements. There were times when he wanted to kill me! He thought several times "What the fuck want this guy from me"! But at least in the beginning, I was so a incredible perfectionist that I rewrote the smallest notes. Steve has no academic background, he lets his feelings run free and that's a good thing.
MiM: The production, mixing and mastering work is impeccable. In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?
Davide: You will be surprised, but the whole procedure was created in my and Dee’s music Studio. We composed and arranged the songs. We then received additional guitar tracks from Artur. These were all mixed in Logic Pro X. Only the end mix and mastering were done externally in a Studio in Hannover-Germany. Nowadays you can create really great recordings with a little know-how. Sound recordings in professional studios are very expensive and you have to calculate everything because our budget is limited. Of course, it would be very nice if we could work with a sound engineer one day.
MiM: How would you describe a live show of The 40 Thieves?
Dee: We are all hardcore performers, so we always give it our all. I hate rock concerts where you can see that the band isn't giving their all. I want the viewer to get something for their money! That he can say when he goes home: Fuck "The 40 Thieves" gave everything what a great band!
Davide: Short and to the point: An honest and very energetic show with a lot of sweat and love.
Artur: I can say, that the energy between us is terrific, we will rock the stage, baby!
MiM: Normally when you put out a new record, the normal thing is going on tour. What plans do you have to promote this record?
Dee: We do a lot, where do I start? The record company takes over a part. Especially the equipping of the radios and webzine and print magazines worldwide. Also the physical distribution of the CD. From our side, we have just published the fifth video clip "Unconditional". We are also developing an interactive website where our fans can do different things. It's best to go to th40th.com then since you're always up to date. Furthermore, we are going to NYC next week for a big story of the English Powerplay Rock Magazin and celebrating our US release there as well. After that, planning begins for the tour, which will not be until 2024.
MiM: What can a record label like Wormholedeath Records offer to a band like The 40 Thieves to consolidate itself on the scene?
Davide: You get a jump-start and new contacts. If you have questions, you can always approach them. However, it is the band that is ultimately responsible for how the path should go.
Dee: Yes, as Davide says, it's a kind of win-win relationship. The label does a certain amount of work that I have already mentioned before. But if nothing comes from the band, then even the best label can't do a good job.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
Artur: Guys, we are onto something, we write new stuff, new in every aspect! The first album helped us to get a taste of what we are cable of and what inspires us the most, now we’re making a spicy extract of that, it will blow your mind!

Nowadays it's so difficult to get a foothold there, because the market has become oversaturated and confusing like everywhere else.
