English Version

¿Es 'Rise of the Ruler' un álbum conceptual?

When the Northern German power metallers Mob Rules release their highly anticipated new album, “Rise Of The Ruler,” on August 22nd, melodic metal fans will be in for a treat. This is precisely where “Rise of the Ruler” comes in, and keyboardist Jan Christian Halfbrodt (responsible for all the lyrics) continues the story. It was an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to chat with Sven Lüdge.

MiM: Hello, my name is Raúl Cardona, and it's been a privilege to talk to you.

Mob Rules ROTR album cover web MR: Hi, I am Sven. Lead guitar player for Mob Rules.

MiM: You haven't released a new album in years, and now you've surprised us with this exceptional album. What was it like returning to the recording studio?

MR: After that long period of time, it was spectacular. I always collect musical ideas, but when you finally start writing and recording, there is a goal and some sort of a target line, and that’s great.

MiM: What were those early days like? How difficult has it been for the band to break into the music industry?

MR: I have only been in the band since 2004. But I guess the conditions in the music industry are only worse nowadays than in 1994, when Mob Rules was founded.

MiM: “Rise of the Ruler” (ROAR, 2025) is an album with excellent sound! Impeccable production. All the tracks take you on a journey between melodies, guitars with a bass foundation, and epic drums. What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like?

MR: The songwriting process was quite fun because we were really looking forward to writing new songs and checking out all the musical ideas that had been collected in the time before. When there is a deadline for the release of the album, it is always a very intense and challenging process. But you need this energy of being under pressure and getting things done that is bringing the best performances in both the writing and the recording/production process.

MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between all the tracks. Is “Rise of the Ruler” a concept album?

MR: Yes, it is. Very early on, Klaus had the idea of going back to the concept story of the first two albums. So there is this fictional story that runs through the entire album.

MiM: “Rise Of The Ruler” is a very well-crafted album, and lyrically, it features lyrics that invite us to reflect on the world we live in. Is that right? How do you see it?

MR: Absolutely it’s about abuse of power and the desire to constantly bring things into harmony.

MiM: This album features Ulli Perhonen (Snow-White Blood) as a guest. How did the idea come about?

MR: We had Ulli on the "Beast Reborn" album for a song called "My Sobriety Mind". There is this song “On The Trail” that had the potential of being a duet. She is a great singer with a great voice, so we went with it.

MiM: What are your main influences when writing new material?

MR: I am mostly influenced by traditional heavy metal bands of the 80s and 90s like Iron Maiden, Savatage, Queensrÿche, and so on. But I also am very much into prog rock and bands like Marillion, Genesis, and Pink Floyd.

MiM: What is the creative process like when writing music?

MR: I am the main source of musical ideas in the band, and when it is time to make these ideas become songs, it’s Klaus and I who are arranging/composing these songs.

MiM: What can a record label like ROAR offer a band like Mob Rules to establish themselves in the scene?

MR: Very much. Even today, it is important to have a well-functioning record company at your side. We work with a booking company “Dragon Productions” and this contact also came about through the record company.

MiM: Usually, when you release a new album, touring is the next step. What plans do you have to promote this album?

MR: We have some release shows planned. The collaboration with Dragon Productions is so new that they couldn’t do that much for us this year, but I guess there will be a lot going on in the next year.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?

MR: Thank you for doing this interview with me. Keep on listening to heavy metal and keep the scene alive. Without the fans there, there's nothing.
