PowerPaladin COVER 2025 by Steinar lafsson 1

English Version

PowerPaladin BeyondT2025 by Steinar lafsson 2

From the frozen lands of Iceland, Power Paladin returns with a new musical odyssey: Beyond the Reach of Enchantment, their second studio album, released by ROAR. Eight tracks shape an epic tale where fantasy, power, and melody intertwine with impeccable production by Haukur Hannes, Ingi Þórisson, Bjarni Egill Ögmundsson, Atli Guðlaugsson, and the band themselves.

The result: an album that reaffirms that heroism is not at odds with the present. An excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to the guitar player, Atli Guölaugsson.

PowerPaladin Cover BTROE 1 MiM: “Beyond the Reach of Enchantment” showcases a more refined sound than your debut. What key lessons or changes emerged between the two albums, both musically and conceptually?

PP: Yeah, I think building on our first album has definitely allowed us to create a more mature sound this time. We were doing many things for the first time with “Windfyre Steel.” We had no idea how it would do; success to us would have been managing to print out a few vinyl copies and sell them here in Iceland, hahah. This time we know a bit better what works and what doesn’t and, moreover, in a more structured way.

MiM: The album's structure seems conceived as a saga, with each song functioning as a “chapter.” Did you envision the album as an epic story from the beginning? What thread connects the songs?

PP: Although I wouldn't say it's really a concept album or anything like that, there’s certainly a theme that we want to project throughout the album that unifies the songs together as part of a bigger whole. If Windfyre Steel is a super colorful, happy “summer” debut, then BtRoE has a more mature, harsher, and stoic “autumn” vibe.

MiM: Regarding the production, the album involves several band members along with external producers. What was that collaborative work like, and how did you manage to maintain a coherent vision throughout the entire process?

PP: We’re fortunate enough to have countless talented people around us, so working with them has been no problem at all. Take our music video for “Sword Vigor,” for example. We wanted to do this with Andri because he understands our kind of humor and what we wanted to go for, and I think it worked out pretty well!

MiM: The mixing and mastering achieve a remarkable balance between power and clarity. What were you trying to convey with the album's final sound, and how did Haukur Hannes and Frank de Jong influence that result?

PP: Well, we don’t make it easy for them at least, hahah. We have a lot of fun layering multiple voices and sounds in our songs, and they do an excellent job unifying that all together. Haukur and Frank also did the mixing and mastering on our first album, and they’re both really talented, so it was no question in our minds that we wanted them to do this one too.

MiM: James Child's cover art is once again key to Power Paladin's identity. How did the album's visual concept come about, and what role does art play in your musical approach?

PP: Following up on this idea of themes I mentioned above, that’s what we really wanted to achieve with this second album, moving over from summer to autumn. So I commissioned the album cover before we had really written any songs for the album, I feel it really helps to have that visual guide from the start to help create a consistent album.

Regarding the cover itself, I felt that we  certainly couldn't try to go bigger and more colorful than our first album. So instead we tried to honestly reign it into this cozy campfire atmosphere, but made sure to include some nice visual elements there as well. Plus, a dude sleeping in full plate armor is just too funny not to do.

MiM: Power Paladin has always declared its love for Iron Maiden, Dio, and Helloween. In what moments of the new album do you feel that heritage is most reflected, and in which do you feel you've begun to build your own language?

PP: I think the roots of what we grew up with and what made heavy metal special to all of us is significant to keep in mind when building upon what we’re doing. Especially because we’ve always made it clear to ourselves that we’re heavy metal first, power metal silliness second. And that’s a significant distinction to make; it’s straightforward to get lost in all the DnD silliness, costumes, or being too satirical.

MiM: Being a power metal band in Iceland isn't common. How does your environment, climate, culture, and isolation influence your music and the way you imagine fantastical worlds?

PP: You would think that Icelandic landscapes inspire us to write about fantasy because of their uniqueness, but it’s really the other way around. Glaciers, volcanoes, and Icelandic mountains aren’t fantasy to us; it’s just our home! Fantasy to us is big forests, castles, and maybe good weather once in a while, hahah. But the Icelandic music scene definitely influences us, tendency to go towards a harsher sound once in a while and incorporating some of our friends that play more black metal, like Óskar, who does those harsh vocals on our album.

MiM: What plans do you have to present “Beyond the Reach” of Enchantment live? Is there a tour in the works, festivals confirmed, or any special ideas for bringing this story to the stage?

PP: We have a release concert coming up soon in Iceland, which we’re very excited about—just us playing in an old music hall by the pond in downtown Reykjavik. We’re also playing at the Sátan festival here in Iceland in the summer and the Warriors of Steel festival in Norway. Then we have some exciting opportunities being discussed as well, which we will hopefully be able to announce soon.

MiM: Finally, I'd like to invite you to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

PP: Hope you guys enjoyed my rambling! Thank you all so much for your support, and hopefully we’ll be able to play for you guys in Spain soon! I’ve been to Barcelona Rockfest three times before as a fan and playing there would be so much fun. Until then, with great power comes great metal!
